Praying For Understanding: Reading Anselm Through Wittgenstein, Brad Kallenberg Jan 2004

Praying For Understanding: Reading Anselm Through Wittgenstein, Brad Kallenberg

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

If Wittgenstein is correct to assert that practice gives words their sense, then it is logically possible that an understanding of the ontological "argument" Anselm presents in Proslogion requires some level of practical participation in prayer. A close inspection of Anselm's historical context shows that the conceptual distance we stand from him may be too great to be overcome by mere spectatorship. Rather, participation in this case likely requires of the modern reader a reproduction of Anselm's conduct in prayer. If so, Anselm's case falsifies, and thus warrants our resistance of, the commonly presumed disconnect between knowledge and practice.

Reenchanting The Law: The Religious Dimension Of Judicial Decision Making, Mark C. Modak-Truran Jan 2004

Reenchanting The Law: The Religious Dimension Of Judicial Decision Making, Mark C. Modak-Truran

Journal Articles

Without a religious justification in the law, judges cannot fully justify their decisions in hard cases from within the law. The law must be indeterminate because the Establishment Clause proscribes this full justification. This does not mean that the Establishment Clause prohibits judges from fully justifying their decisions during their deliberations about hard cases. It only prohibits judges from including that full justification in their written opinions. Deliberation and explanation are separate stages of judicial decision making that should be kept distinct. Given this distinction, my thesis is that judges should fully justify their decisions in hard cases by relying …

Catholic Clergy Sexual Abuse Meets The Civil Law, Thomas P. Doyle, Stephen C. Rubino Jan 2004

Catholic Clergy Sexual Abuse Meets The Civil Law, Thomas P. Doyle, Stephen C. Rubino

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This article examines the sexual abuse scandal that has racked the Roman Catholic Church since 1984, focusing in particular on how the Church's authority structure has responded and how the American civil court system has been used by victims to seek redress. It gives an overview of the Church's legal system, Canon Law, and the way that system and the Church leadership have dealt (or failed to deal) with the problem of sexual abuse. Part II takes a "long look back" to the history of sexual abuse and Canon Law before 1984. Part III details how the Church has dealt …

Uses And Cautions Of Marketing As A Church Growth Tool, Darren Cronshaw

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Advocates of church marketing assert that every church markets. Sunday newsletters, church signs, church letterheads and visitation of newcomers are all marketing tools. The question is whether such marketing is intentional and likely to be productive, or haphazard and unfocused

Department Of Anthropology And Geography Self-Study Report To The Academic Planning Committee, Department Of Anthropology And Geography Jan 2004

Department Of Anthropology And Geography Self-Study Report To The Academic Planning Committee, Department Of Anthropology And Geography

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

In January of 2001 the Department of Anthropology and the Department of Geography became the Department of Anthropology and Geography. This merger was not requested by members of either unit: it was imposed administratively. Under ideal circumstance, such mergers evolve organically through a history of collaborations from the bottom up. Nevertheless, faculty of each unit had collaborated in a variety of contexts so there was some basis for integration. As one may imagine, one of the first things we set out to accomplish as a newly formed unit was the establishment of a common set of by-laws. After about six …

Reconstruction And Constitution Building In Iraq, A. Kevin Reinhart, Gilbert S. Merritt Jan 2004

Reconstruction And Constitution Building In Iraq, A. Kevin Reinhart, Gilbert S. Merritt

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

I would like to thank Vanderbilt Law School and all of the many sponsors for the invitation, and especially the Foreign Service Legal Society whose officers worked so hard to put this together. I appreciate very much the opportunity to talk to you all about Iraq. I need to begin with sort of a prelude: the things that were part of my training are in a way irrelevant to what I was doing this summer. I was not there in a professional capacity, as an Islamicist; I was there instead as a volunteer for the International Rescue Committee (IRC). I …
