Near-Death Experiences, Religion, And Life After Death, Holly Wallace Apr 2004

Near-Death Experiences, Religion, And Life After Death, Holly Wallace

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates current scientific literature on near-death experiences (NDE), focusing on two common types of models used to explain the NDE: biological models and spiritual models. Four biological models and two spiritual models are presented and evaluated. During the evaluation, particular emphasis is placed on how these models accommodate veridical evidence. I found that, of the biological models, only one could account for veridical evidence, whereas both of the spiritual models provided explanations of these strange occurrences. From this conclusion, the implications of NDE research on human survival are explored.

Reverend David Yonggi Cho’S Leadership As Manifested In The Spirituality Of The Saints Of A Full Gospel Church, Myung-Soo Park Apr 2004

Reverend David Yonggi Cho’S Leadership As Manifested In The Spirituality Of The Saints Of A Full Gospel Church, Myung-Soo Park

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

This research has the purpose of organizing and analyzing the spirituality of Korean Pentecostal movement. Up to now, many research on Korean Pentecostal movement have been published. However, many such researches have limited themselves on the analysis of Reverend David Yonggi Cho’s life and sermons. Of course, no one can deny its importance. Aside from Reverend Cho, it is difficult, if not possible, to explain Korean Pentecostal movement. Nevertheless, there is something that we should treat it lightly in understanding Korean Pentecostal movement. That is the spiritual experience of ordinary Pentecostal believers.

Review Of Archbishop A.-A. Tache Of St. Boniface: The "Good Fight" And The Illusive Vision By Raymond J. A. Hue!, Robert Choquette

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Alexandre Tache, one of the very first Canadians to join the French Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate who arrived in Canada in 1841, was sent to work in Canada's Northwest in 1845 where he became second bishop of St. Boniface in 1853, and later archbishop. He remained there until his death in 1894, a half-century during which the region was transformed from a vast hunting emporium for furs to a refuge for tens of thousands of Canadian, American, and European settlers brought into the area after 1860 on the rapidly expanding tracks of American and then Canadian railways. Tache built …

Religiosity And Life Satisfaction Among Lds Women, Sherrie Mills Johnson Apr 2004

Religiosity And Life Satisfaction Among Lds Women, Sherrie Mills Johnson

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Because of their high religiosity, LDS women are an excellent population group to study the effects of religiosity. Very little published research regarding this segment of the general population exists. This study examines the religiosity of LDS women by comparing two national samples of LDS women to a sample of non-LDS women taken from the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH), in order to determine differences in their life satisfaction and mental well-being. This study also compares two subgroups of LDS women, measuring if increased levels of adherence to the same religious beliefs has an effect on satisfaction and …

On Writing A History Of The College Theology Society: Reviewing Fifty Years Of Theological Conversations, Sandra Yocum Mize

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

The historian remains in many an imagination nothing more and nothing less than the purveyor of facts about the past. The historian's task appears simple, straightforward—to report the facts accurately. According to the logic of this image, once one has “the facts” about a selected topic, then the history nearly writes itself. Fortunately for the historian, even the most focused historical study demands more than setting the events in their proper order. I write “fortunately” because if the historical task were as straightforward as just described then a single history written by no particular historian would suffice on any given …

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Professor Oh briefly describes Locke v. Davey in which the U.S. Supreme Court, in its 2003-04 term, attempted to clarify its First Amendment jurisprudence on the religion clauses. In a 7-2 decision, the Court held that the State of Washington did not violate the First Amendment Free Exercise Clause by denying government financial aid to college students seeking to pursue a course of study in religious devotional studies.

Gathering The Flock And Marginalizing The Sheep: The Origins Of A Christian Deaf Liberation Theology, Sophara Sok Apr 2004

Gathering The Flock And Marginalizing The Sheep: The Origins Of A Christian Deaf Liberation Theology, Sophara Sok

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

The Christian religion plays an important role in the lives of many deaf and hearing Americans as a source of security and spirituality; however Deaf people have values, a worldview, and sensory preferences that differ in a significant ways from hearing people. This paper argues that those differences lead to an underlying predicament brimming with ideological conflicts between being a culturally Deaf person and a Christian. A new religious movement derived from Liberation Theology promises a resolution to the identity/ideological struggle for Deaf Christians but will succeed only if educational and religious institutions make a concerted effort to teach Deaf …

Error As Means To Discovery, Kevin C. Elliott Apr 2004

Error As Means To Discovery, Kevin C. Elliott

Faculty Publications

This paper argues, first, that recent studies of experimentation, most notably by Deborah Mayo, provide the conceptual resources to describe scientific discovery’s early stages as error-probing processes. Second, it shows that this description yields greater understanding of those early stages, including the challenges that they pose, the research strategies associated with them, and their influence on the rest of the discovery process. Throughout, the paper examines the phenomenon of ‘‘chemical hormesis’’ (i.e., anomalous low-dose effects from toxic chemicals) as a case study that is important not only for the biological sciences but also for contemporary public policy. The resulting analysis …
