Academic Dishonesty: A Study In The Magnitude Of And Justifications For Academic Dishonesty Among College Undergraduate And Graduate Students, Bryan Hendricks
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this investigation was to examine the degree to which college undergraduate and graduate students cheat as well as to examine if the justifications for cheating differed amongst these groups. Cheating behavior scores and justifications for engaging in academically dishonest behavior scores were obtained from 138 college undergraduate and graduate students through the use of a survey. One-way analysis of variance revealed a significant difference between the underclassmen, upperclassmen, and graduate students group reporting cheating behaviors. Post hoc tests revealed that underclassmen reported significantly higher levels of cheating than upperclassmen and graduate students. Graduate students were found to …

Recognition Of Self Among Persons With Dementia: Pictures Versus Names As Environmental Supports, Jennifer Gross, Mary E. Harmon, Rebecca A. Myers, Rachel L. Evans, Natalie R. Kay, Senez Rodriguez-Charbonier, Thomas R. Herzog
Peer Reviewed Articles
The physical environment can promote the functional ability of persons with dementia. Many care facilities use environmental signage (e.g., names on doors) to facilitate adaptive behavior (e.g., room finding). However, the effects of such signage on residents’functioning are not well understood. In three experiments, we investigated if persons with moderate to severe dementia had the required skills necessary to benefit from signage. Compared to a control condition (recognition of fellow residents’ photographs), a high percentage of participants could identify written names and photographs of themselves (Experiment 1). Moreover, name and photographic labels helped participants identify belongings (Experiment 2). Training improved …

Multicultural Competence And Levels Of Effectiveness In Adventure -Based Counseling, David M. Cummins
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The current study explored the relationship between adventure based counselor multicultural competency and their levels of effectiveness as perceived by youth at risk. The sample consisted of 22 counselors (19 White and 3 ethnic minority) who competed the Multicultural Knowledge and Awareness Scale and 86 youth at risk participants (52 White and 34 ethnic minority) who completed the Counselor Effectiveness Rating Scale. Analysis of the data suggests a very small negative relationship between multicultural competence of adventure based counselors and their levels of effectiveness as rated by the ethnic minority and White youth at risk participants. Limitations of the study …

School Counselors' Referral Practices Of Children With Internalizing Symptoms, Kelly Hughes
School Counselors' Referral Practices Of Children With Internalizing Symptoms, Kelly Hughes
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This project proposed to examine school counselors' knowledge of and experiences with internalizing issues in children. The sample included all elementary and middle/secondary school counselors employed in Utah. The measure used in the present study was a questionnaire adapted from a study by Green, Clopton, and Pope. Analyses revealed that few elementary school counselors would meet with a student struggling with internalizing symptoms, but many would meet with the students' teacher(s) and parents. Overall, fewer secondary school counselors endorsed the presented responses as compared to elementary school counselors. More than half of both elementary and secondary school counselors indicated they …

Psychological Effects Of Martial Arts Training: Fear Of Physical Assault And Self -Esteem, Robert C. Clanton
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine gender differences in the effects of martial arts training on self-esteem and fear of physical assault. Two studies were performed. The Fear of Physical Assault Scale was developed in the first study in order to measure individuals' perceived vulnerability to attack. Results indicated that the instrument was a reliable measure. Males scored significantly higher on the scale, indicating that they tend to perceive themselves as less vulnerable and more competent at defending themselves against physical assault. The second study examined the effects of martial arts training on the self-esteem and fear of …
Untangling Eligibility Requirements Under The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, Robert A. Garda Jr.
Untangling Eligibility Requirements Under The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, Robert A. Garda Jr.
Missouri Law Review
This Article attempts to untangle the web of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act eligibility standards in order to determine who is entitled to its extensive benefits. The overriding question addressed is whether children passing from grade to grade may still be IDEA eligible. When the Supreme Court stated famously in Board of Education of the Hendrick Hudson Central School District v. Rowley that not every child passing from grade to grade is receiving a free appropriate public education under IDEA, it necessarily recognized a class of children who were IDEA eligible despite passing marks. Identifying the characteristics of these children …

Enhancing The Rehabilitation Counseling Process: Understanding The Obstacles To Asian Americans' Utilization Of Services, Roy K. Chen, Song-Jae Jo, Chandra M. Donnell
School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications
Improving rehabilitation services for Asian Americans with disabilities through the rehabilitation counseling process remains as an ongoing challenge. Despite being the fastest growing ethnic group in the United States, past studies have reported low utilization rates of vocational rehabilitation and mental health services among this population. This article (a) describes Asian American views on disabilities from religious, philosophical, and spiritual perspectives; (b) reviews factors that may contribute to their being underserved in the rehabilitation; (c) discusses the influence of family dynamics on the rehabilitation process; (d) underscores unique employment challenges facing the Asian Immigrant community; and (e) draws out the …

Two Perspectives On The Effectiveness Of An Entry-Level Community Rehabilitation Training Program: A Comparison Of Student And Supervisorial Perceptions, Howard D. Twomey Edd
Dissertations
Although a significant amount of attention has focused on the effectiveness of graduate level training programs for rehabilitation counselors, little, if any, research has been devoted to entry-level training programs for Community Rehabilitation Program (CRP) personnel. To remedy this deficiency, this study first developed a survey instrument for both students and their supervisors to measure the change in skills, aptitudes, and attitudes that resulted from participation in a university sponsored training program. After administering the survey to 188 students and 20 supervisors, the perceptions of these two groups were compared and then select demographic measures were used to explain the …

Musculoskeletal Disorders: Primary And Secondary Interventions, Robert J. Gatchel
Musculoskeletal Disorders: Primary And Secondary Interventions, Robert J. Gatchel
Psychology Faculty Publications - Archive
In the United States alone, the annual cost associated with the diagnosis and care of musculoskeletal trauma amounts to tens of billions of dollars [Occupational Musculoskeletal Disorders: Function, Outcomes and Evidence. Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, Philadelphia]. Moreover, these costs are continuing to increase at an alarming rate. In fact, in the United States today, occupational musculoskeletal disorders are the leading causes of work disability. Changes in health care policy and demand for improved allocation of health care resources by the Federal government have also recently placed greater pressure on health care professionals to provide the most cost-effective treatment for these …
