Annualized And Cumulative Returns On Venture-Backed Public Companies Categorized By Industry, Amir Shachmurove, Yochanan Shachmurove Dec 2004

Annualized And Cumulative Returns On Venture-Backed Public Companies Categorized By Industry, Amir Shachmurove, Yochanan Shachmurove

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This paper investigates the actual performance of 2,895 Initial Public Offerings of companies that were backed by venture capital from 1968 through 1998. It seeks to refute the myth that investors demand very high annualized and cumulative rates of return to compensate for the risks they are taking by financing ventures. In fact, it argues that, based on historical statistics, the total returns of the venture capital market are reasonable given the level of risk. This is done by concentrating on sections of various types of industries that have been supported by venture capital.

Is Empathy Gendered And If So, Why? An Approach From Feminist Psychological Anthropology, Claudia Strauss Dec 2004

Is Empathy Gendered And If So, Why? An Approach From Feminist Psychological Anthropology, Claudia Strauss

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Difference feminists have argued that women have special virtues. One such virtue would seem to be empathy, which has three main components: imaginative projection, awareness of the other's emotions, and concern. Empathy is closely related to identification. Psychological research and the author's own study of women's and men's talk about poverty and welfare use in the United States demonstrate women's greater empathic concern. However, some cross-cultural research shows greater sex differences in empathy in the United States than elsewhere. This combination of findings (women tend to demonstrate greater empathic concern, but this typical difference varies cross-culturally) requires a complex biocultural …

Newton, Maclaurin, And The Authority Of Mathematics, Judith V. Grabiner Dec 2004

Newton, Maclaurin, And The Authority Of Mathematics, Judith V. Grabiner

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Sir Isaac Newton revolutionized physics and astronomy in his Principia. How did he do it? Would his method work on any area of inquiry, not only in science, but also about society and religion? We look at how some Newtonians, most notably Colin Maclaurin, combined sophisticated mathematical modeling and empirical data in what has come to be called the "Newtonian Style." We argue that this style was responsible not only for Maclaurin’s scientific success but for his ability to solve problems ranging from taxation to insurance to theology. We show how Maclaurin’s work strengthened the prestige of Newtonianism and …

Transcrire L'Horreur Sur L'Espace De La Page, Bernadette Ginestet-Levine Dec 2004

Transcrire L'Horreur Sur L'Espace De La Page, Bernadette Ginestet-Levine

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Rachid Boudjedra’s Timimoun uses the theatrical convention of a minibus taking tourists to the desert. In this mini-bus, news from the outside world is brought through the radio, which plays the part of a messenger. The narration moves forward by a progression of press releases that report bombings committed by terrorists. The barbarian nature of the acts is transcribed on the page by means of typography. The spatial/visual convention itself is set in concentric lexical fields – liquid, then desertic – erected as fences in an attempt to confine the unbearable.

Trop De Soleil Tue L'Amour : Une Expression De L'Écriture Du Mal-Être De Mongo Beti, Rodolphine Sylvie Wamba Dec 2004

Trop De Soleil Tue L'Amour : Une Expression De L'Écriture Du Mal-Être De Mongo Beti, Rodolphine Sylvie Wamba

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The classical and dissident African writer Mongo Beti perpetually uses the theme of man’s quest for freedom in everything he does. In fact, the philosophy of “Rubénism” is found in each of his works. Given that man must survive in the “ocean of shit” he lives in, the writer, using a popular language, freely chooses to add some humour to everyday life. Thus, the text we studied appeared as a genuine thriller, complete with comedy and tragedy, which presents a deviation from more formal writing. This is the main idea of this analysis, which consists of showing Trop de soleil …

Vulnerable Trade: The Dark Side Of An Edgeworth Box, Charles Anderton, John Carter Dec 2004

Vulnerable Trade: The Dark Side Of An Edgeworth Box, Charles Anderton, John Carter

Economics Department Working Papers

We examine incentives to seize and defend goods offered for trade in an Edgeworth box economy. Appropriation possibilities generate an equilibrium of coerced redistribution and voluntary trade in a reduced box. Potential mutual gains remain untaken because the prospect of piracy creates a price wedge, wherein the effective relative price is lowered for the exporter and raised for the importer. As the vulnerability of one or both goods increases, the price wedge widens, causing trade to diminish. If vulnerability becomes sufficiently high, then trade and appropriation are driven to zero, or one or both players are rendered indifferent to trade.

Currencies, Identities, Free Banking, And Growth In Early Twentieth Century Manchuria, Thomas Gottschang Dec 2004

Currencies, Identities, Free Banking, And Growth In Early Twentieth Century Manchuria, Thomas Gottschang

Economics Department Working Papers

From 1906 until 1931, Manchuria – Northeast China - was a complex patchwork of Chinese, Japanese, and Russian spheres of control. Since political authority was fragmented, none of the governments was capable of establishing a central bank with a monopoly over the money supply. Multiple currencies were in use, ranging from strings – tiao- of traditional Chinese copper cash, to silver dollars (yuan) from Mexico, China, and Japan, to Russian rubles (which crashed in value after the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution), and miscellaneous paper currencies of varying stability. The modern banks established under national and private auspices to serve the commercial …

Face À La Meute – Narration Et Folie Dans Les Romans De Boubacar Boris Diop, Susanne Gehrmann Dec 2004

Face À La Meute – Narration Et Folie Dans Les Romans De Boubacar Boris Diop, Susanne Gehrmann

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The article analyses the narrative techniques and the theme of madness in three novels by the Senegalese writer Boubacar Boris Diop, caracterised by narrative polyphony and metatextual reflexion on the production of a story. The speech of protagonists affected by “intellectual madness” plays a strategic role in the structure of the novel which, as a hybrid genre, draws on oral and literary traditions in a still splintered aesthetic. The image of the pack represents an unreasonnable society condemning a so-called mad individual whose madness consists in bringing a counter-memory of the foundation myths.

Folie Et Écriture Dans Calomnies De Linda Lê, Ching Selao Dec 2004

Folie Et Écriture Dans Calomnies De Linda Lê, Ching Selao

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article proposes to explore the many faces of madness through a reading of Linda Lê’s Calomnies, in which two narrative voices are presented. The following shall demonstrate how this novel reproduces a “romantic” perception of madness as encountered in Michel Foucault’s work. Although this narrative text introduces a mad narrator speaking in the “I” persona, it nonetheless points out the difficulties of letting madness speak for itself. These difficulties are also examined in this study.

La Mondialisation Avant L’Heure : Le Devenir Du Français Au Canada Et Au Québec Dans L’Oeuvre Polémique De Jacques Ferron, Richard Patry Dec 2004

La Mondialisation Avant L’Heure : Le Devenir Du Français Au Canada Et Au Québec Dans L’Oeuvre Polémique De Jacques Ferron, Richard Patry

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This study is concerned with what Jacques Ferron’s non-fictional works say about the status of the French language in Canada during the 1960s and 1970s, and the future he predicted for this language, particularly in Quebec. A close scrutiny of these writings reveals sharp and definite positions with regard to this question and a very modern point of view, which remains up-to-date even today. The conclusions these writings lead to are very pessimistic for the survival of the French language in Canada, and dubious for the future of this language in Quebec.

Accounting Information In The First Issues Of The Wall Street Journal: An Historical Note, Mary Ellen Oliverio, Bernard H. Newman

Faculty Working Papers and Articles

Contemporary attention to transparency of financial information in the global marketplace motivated the questions that are explored in this note: "What was the nature of financial accounting reporting at the time The Wall Street Journal began publication in July 1889?" "What was the extent and nature of attention to accounting-related information in the initial months of publication?" After a brief overview of the nature of financial reporting at the time, there is a discussion of articles directly related to accounting through March 1890.

Human Rights, Sovereignty, And The Final Status Of Kosovo , Bartram S. Brown Dec 2004

Human Rights, Sovereignty, And The Final Status Of Kosovo , Bartram S. Brown

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The final political status of Kosovo is ultimately a human rights issue, and a just and viable solution must balance the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia with the human rights of Kosovar Albanians. A century ago Woodrow Wilson publicly endorsed self-determination as a fundamental principle linked to the equal rights of all peoples. Today it is broadly accepted as one of the essential principles of contemporary international law. Despite this exalted normative status, the principle of self-determination is limited by its inherent ambiguities.

Self-determination is a group right, to be exercised only by peoples, but there is no clear …

Victor's Not So Little Secret: Trademark Dilution Is Difficult But Not Impossible To Prove Following Moseley V. V. Secret Catalogue, Inc., Jessica C. Kaiser

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The Supreme Court's decision in Moseley v. V. Secret Catalogue, Inc. has been criticized by those who favor strong federal dilution protection and applauded by those who dislike dilution protection. Critics of dilution favor weak antidilution provisions because dilution begins to protect trademarks as pure property rights. In Moseley, the Supreme Court resolved a circuit split over the appropriate interpretation of the Federal Trademark Dilution Act ("FTDA"), and the Court determined that the FTDA requires that famous mark holders show "actual dilution." This Note examines the impacts of this decision and advises ways that famous mark holders can obtain …

Invisible Points Of Departure: Reading Rothko’S Christological Imagery, Andrea Pappas Dec 2004

Invisible Points Of Departure: Reading Rothko’S Christological Imagery, Andrea Pappas

Art and Art History

Jewish identity increasingly figures in new histories of modernism in general, analyses of American art, and, recently, abstract expressionism.1 Although abstract paintings have signified “Jewishness” only since the late sixties, this essay looks at the antecedents of such re-identification in one canonical figure, Mark Rothko, examining three paintings from a narrow range of time in the early days of World War II. His Antigone of 1940 (Figure 1) remains one of his most familiar paintings from the formative period spanning 1940 to mid-1943. It is one of a small handful of works canonized from his early production: paintings that traditionally …

Rayleigh-Lidar Observations Of Mesospheric Mid-Latitude Density Climatology Above Utah State University, Eric M. Lundell, Vincent B. Wickwar

Posters

Data from Rayleigh lidars have been used extensively to derive temperatures in the mesospheric region of the atmosphere. However, these data have not been used extensively in a similar way to derive neutral densities. We report on one such mid-latitude, density climatology between 45 and ~90 km, based on nearly 600 good nights of observations carried out since 1993 at the Atmospheric Lidar Observatory (ALO) at Utah State University (41.7°N 111.8°W). They produce relative density profiles that are then normalized at 45 km to an empirical model, in this case the MSISe00 model. Despite this normalization, significant differences are found …

Engaging Indigenous Students At School: An Evaluation Of The Deadly Vibe Magazine, Nola Purdie, Louise Ellis, Alison Stone

Indigenous Education Research

Closing the divide between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students is one of the most pressing current educational imperatives. A multifaceted approach is needed to achieve this, given the diversity of educational disadvantage experienced by Indigenous students, and the contexts within which they obtain their education. One innovative approach to overcoming the disparity between Indigenous and non- Indigenous educational outcomes is that developed by Vibe Australia through its publication of the magazine Deadly Vibe. Deadly Vibe is a magazine for Indigenous students that aims to enhance their academic and social outcomes of schooling, including literacy and numeracy learning, self-esteem and self-concept, regular …
