Peer Reputations As A Determinant Of Gender Differences In School Outcomes: Evidence For Domain-Specific Effects, Lisa Borga Gelman Jan 2004

Peer Reputations As A Determinant Of Gender Differences In School Outcomes: Evidence For Domain-Specific Effects, Lisa Borga Gelman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study explored the impact of peer reputations for academic ability and school-related affect upon fourth- through eighth-graders' academic outcomes. In light of the prevailing stereotypes regarding the differential academic abilities of girls and boys (favoring girls in English, and boys in math and science), it was hypothesized that peer reputations in English would be more predictive of outcomes for girls than for boys, while math and science reputations would be most predictive of boys' outcomes. Peer reputations were found to be predictive of school grades, but not of standardized test scores. Although ability reputations in most areas were predictive …

Prey Selectivity Of The Fishes Stephanolepis Hispidus And Histrio Histrio On The Sargassum Shrimps Latreutes Fucorum And Leander Tenuicornis, Kimberly A. Hutchinson Jan 2004

Prey Selectivity Of The Fishes Stephanolepis Hispidus And Histrio Histrio On The Sargassum Shrimps Latreutes Fucorum And Leander Tenuicornis, Kimberly A. Hutchinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Predator-prey relationships were studied between the shrimps Latreutes fucorum and Leander tenuicornis and the predatory fishes Stephanolepis hispidus and Histrio histrio, all found within pelagic Sargassum communities. Average survival times of shrimps were compared in species, size/density, and habitat selection studies. The results showed that S. hispidus had a preference for prey species while H. histrio did not. 30 mm shrimp survived longer than the 10 mm shrimp for both S. hispidus and H. histrio. Density was a factor in the survival times of the 20 mm shrimps with S. hispidus only. L. tenuicornis survived longer in artificial Sargassum habitats …

Pricing Behavior Of Exchange Traded Funds, Nivine F. Richie Jan 2004

Pricing Behavior Of Exchange Traded Funds, Nivine F. Richie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation examines the pricing behavior of exchange traded funds (ETFs) in three essays. (1) The Overreaction of International ETFs, (2) Fragmentation of Night Markets, and (3) The Impact of the Creation of the QQQ on the Underlying Securities. The overreaction study examines the role of information in global overreaction. Univariate analysis reveals that overreaction associated with informed events is less pronounced than with uninformed events following extreme price decreases. Further, positive firm-specific announcements are met with investor overreaction while negative firm-specific announcements are not. Finally, significant reversals of winners during bull markets relative to bear markets support the hypothesis …

This multi-site case study focused on principals who participated in a unique professional development model: a learning community. The study was twofold. First, research was conducted in order to describe the experiences and perceptions of principals involved in a professional learning community and second, to understand how participation in a professional learning community influences principals' thinking and leadership practice. This inquiry was conducted in two districts located in the northeast and southeast parts of the United States. The sample consisted of twenty-one participants: sixteen principals, four learning community coaches, and one administrative director. Data was collected from 21 interviews, 39 …

Public Intellectuals In Latin America: Writers And Politics [And] Quetzalcoatl's Feathers, Maria Odette Canivell Jan 2004

Public Intellectuals In Latin America: Writers And Politics [And] Quetzalcoatl's Feathers, Maria Odette Canivell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The role of the Intellectual in Latin America has been marked by his/her political activism. Whether engaging in nation-building like Sarmiento or Marti; or fighting against corruption and tyranny, like Vargas Llosa or the group of Chilean intellectuals who helped bring democracy back to Chile, intellectuals in Latin America leave the relative isolation of the academic world to enter the political arena. This doctoral work, divided in two parts (an academic essay and a novel), explores the struggle of intellectuals, in particular writers, who are required to function as high level politicians due to structural weaknesses in the political systems …

Relationship Of Full-Time Laptop Computer Access To Student Achievement And Student Attitudes In Middle School, Sheila K. Lewis Jan 2004

Relationship Of Full-Time Laptop Computer Access To Student Achievement And Student Attitudes In Middle School, Sheila K. Lewis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The purpose of this quasi-experimental longitudinal study was to investigate the relationship of full-time laptop computer access to student achievement and student attitudes in middle school from the academic years of 1998--1999 through 2000--2001. Two sets of variables were identified in the study. The independent variable was the instructional method having full-time access to laptops or not. The dependent variables were student achievement, and student attitudes. ANOVAs were employed to test the difference between the experimental group and the comparison group. Measures of reading comprehension and math application were determined through scores on the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) for sixth-grade …

Recognizing Gender-Based Violence In Armed Conflict: Incorporating The Voices Of Women In International Humanitarian Law, Amber Cheri Paaso Jan 2004

Recognizing Gender-Based Violence In Armed Conflict: Incorporating The Voices Of Women In International Humanitarian Law, Amber Cheri Paaso

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study seeks to examine the influence of patriarchal forces, at both the local and global level, that have historically resulted in the lack of recognition of gender-specific crimes committed during and after armed conflict. By incorporating the testimonies of Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian women, this study attempts to understand sexual violence from the standpoint of women who experienced these crimes during the War in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina (1991--1995). Theories of Third World feminisms, in addition to feminist critiques concerning rape and international law, will inform this analysis of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). I intend to show that despite greater …

Sex Ratio And Crime: A Cross-Cultural Investigation, Amanda R. Hitchell Jan 2004

Sex Ratio And Crime: A Cross-Cultural Investigation, Amanda R. Hitchell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

When one sex outnumbers the other in a society, what are the social consequences? Sex ratio, or the number of men per 100 women in a society, may affect many aspects of society such as crime rates. It was predicted that in countries with higher sex ratios, crime rates would be higher than in countries with lower sex ratios. It was also predicted that in countries with higher sex ratios, homicide and rape rates would be higher than in countries with lower sex ratios. Additionally, it was predicted that in countries with lower sex ratios, the incidence of female offending …

Revisiting Christopher Fry: Sacred Temporality On A Modern Stage, Lucas H. Harriman Jan 2004

Revisiting Christopher Fry: Sacred Temporality On A Modern Stage, Lucas H. Harriman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Christopher Fry was instrumental in the early twentieth-century resurgence of plays dealing with religious themes. This movement can at first be seen as anomalous within the era of modernism, when many writers and theorists considered religious sentiment to be a barrier to the more crucial aspects of living authentically within a modern society haunted by history. Nevertheless, Fry's particular appropriation of a sacred conceptualization of time on the modern stage reveals a degree of congruity between him and his contemporaries in their varied attempts to represent transcendent value on the stage without simultaneously removing the audience from their own historical …

Relationships Between Pre-Service Teachers' Characteristics, High-Stakes Testing, And Math Efficacy Beliefs In A Former Community College Teacher Preparation Program In Florida, Amy A. Bingham Jan 2004

Relationships Between Pre-Service Teachers' Characteristics, High-Stakes Testing, And Math Efficacy Beliefs In A Former Community College Teacher Preparation Program In Florida, Amy A. Bingham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In Florida, recent changes in legislation have granted community colleges the ability to now offer Baccalaureate degrees in education, frequently to non-traditional students. Additionally, teachers face more high-stakes tests than ever before, and often times struggle with the mathematics sections of such tests. A comprehensive literature review in the areas of pre-service teachers' math knowledge, teachers' efficacy beliefs about teaching math, and the high-stakes mathematics testing of teachers was conducted. Based on the information obtained from the literature review, the study examined a population of pre-service teachers in a new teacher preparation program in Florida. The research investigated relationships surrounding …

Pursuit Of Agency Profits: An Evaluation Of Community Redevelopment Agencies In Florida, Kimberly D. Delaney Jan 2004

Pursuit Of Agency Profits: An Evaluation Of Community Redevelopment Agencies In Florida, Kimberly D. Delaney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The influence of public choice and economic theory in public administration has increased the pressure upon government to "act like a business." Accordingly, cities have become increasingly entrepreneurial, creating redevelopment agencies and venturing into public/private partnerships with mixed results. A key financial tool for redevelopment agencies is tax increment financing (TIF), which yields increased agency revenues from increased property values. As agency activities increase property values, agencies are rewarded with increased revenues, much like profits for a business. The cyclical nature of TIF encourages a self-perpetuating tendency towards economic activities among self-interested, opportunistic agency actors, namely agency staff, elected officials, …

Rhythm And Order, Size And Proportion In The Development Of A Text Typeface, Graham. Young Jan 2004

Rhythm And Order, Size And Proportion In The Development Of A Text Typeface, Graham. Young

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Based on extensive research into the development of Roman text typefaces from the middle of the incunabula (circa 1475) to the end of the 17th Century when the second major wave of Roman text types began, this thesis will document the design and production of a text typeface using many of the developments of the period. Because the incunabula saw the bringing together of the miniscules and majuscules (upper- and lowercases) for use on a single page and because for the first time in Western history the exact same letter form could be used in many printed works at once, …

School-Business Partnerships: Awareness, Attitudes, And Actions Of Secondary School Principals And Their Business Counterparts In Selected Florida School Districts, Dennis. Wechter Jan 2004

School-Business Partnerships: Awareness, Attitudes, And Actions Of Secondary School Principals And Their Business Counterparts In Selected Florida School Districts, Dennis. Wechter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The role of the business partner in education has come into more prominence in the public school system, especially at the high school level. Shrinking budgets have prompted high school principals to explore the idea of business partnerships as a way to close the gap in academic achievement and provide direction for high schools struggling to meet the workforce development demands in today's society. In addition, financial support has provided opportunities for curriculum enhancement, staff development, and student support. However, as more emphasis is placed on the development of school business partnerships, the need to determine how these partnerships function …

Security In Voice Over Ip Networks, Juan C. Pelaez Jan 2004

Security In Voice Over Ip Networks, Juan C. Pelaez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Voice over IP (VoIP) is revolutionizing the global communications system by allowing human voice and fax information to travel over existing packet data networks along with traditional data packets. The convergence of voice and data in one simplified network brings both benefits and constraints to users. Among the several issues that need to be addressed when deploying this technology, security is one of the most critical. This thesis will present a combination of security patterns based on the systematic analysis of attacks against a VoIP network and the existing techniques to mitigate these attacks, providing good practices for all IP …

Re-Visiting Briarwoods: Determining Reliability Of Assessing Population Health From Fragmentary Remains, Deborrah C. Pinto Jan 2004

Re-Visiting Briarwoods: Determining Reliability Of Assessing Population Health From Fragmentary Remains, Deborrah C. Pinto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The Briarwoods Site (8PA66) was first excavated by Jeffrey M. Mitchem and Dr. Stephen J. Gluckman, from the University of South Florida, in 1980. It was a burial mound with scattered human skeletal fragments on the surface. The salvage excavation had to be expedited due to the fact that a building development on the site was in progress. Iscan and Gomez (1982) suggested that there were skeletal elements recovered that provided evidence for the existence of Paget's disease (Osteitis deformans ) in the population. However, this study reanalyzes the elements and using new technology such as Computed Tomography scans shows …

Spider Woman Rules No More? The Transformation And Resilience Of Aztec Female Roles, Rhianna C. Rogers Jan 2004

Spider Woman Rules No More? The Transformation And Resilience Of Aztec Female Roles, Rhianna C. Rogers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Archival documents have shown Spain's attempts at Christianizing the Aztecs and illustrated Spanish justifications for the destruction of traditional Aztec beliefs and gender roles. Analyzing these documents, it becomes apparent that female roles were transformed along the lines of Spanish and Christian ideologies of a proper woman. An examination of the initial nature of Aztec-Spanish relations, with a specific emphasis on the religiosity and mentalities of both the conquered and the conquerors, provides a direct correlation between transformation of native women's social status and initial contacts with European patriarchal customs. Focusing on the reciprocating system of duality existing between men …

Time, Place, And Agency In "Richard Ii", Jennifer Sunshine Goddard Jan 2004

Time, Place, And Agency In "Richard Ii", Jennifer Sunshine Goddard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In Richard II, Shakespeare left lessons for us on the effects of speech acts by leaders on the public stage. The "I" in Richard's speeches is always new: "Thus play I in one person many people" (5.5.31). Recent theories of pardons and promises made in the public sphere call attention to the layers of voices, heretofore hidden, in the first-person utterances of Richard as he attempts to interrupt the rush of history toward vengeance. Employing speech-act theory, we discover today that Shakespeare lets each utterance create a new voice and history for England. Shakespeare gives Richard time to begin to …

Time, Space, And Shakespeare: Temporal And Spatial Disturbances At The Point Of Cultural Contact, Jessica L. Murray Jan 2004

Time, Space, And Shakespeare: Temporal And Spatial Disturbances At The Point Of Cultural Contact, Jessica L. Murray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Cultural geographic theory uses dramatic language (place ballets , time-space routines, temporal rhythms , etc.) to describe how humans sense and dwell in places. Because the theory contemplates human behavior enacted upon a stage, it is applicable to theater studies. This thesis asserts that Hamlet's, Othello's, and Antony's treacherous lifeworlds undermine their spatiotemporal senses and initiate quests similar to those described by Anne Buttimer as searches "for order, predictability, and routine, as well as [...] for adventure and change" ("Grasping" 285). Hamlet's revenge plot is a pursuit of order and reclamation of his identity at Elsinore. Desdemona's murder is Othello's …

Threat Of School Choice And Changes In Public School Organizations, Jeanethe D. Thompson Jan 2004

Threat Of School Choice And Changes In Public School Organizations, Jeanethe D. Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study tested the assumption that faced with the threat of losing students via vouchers public school principals would make changes in their organizational practices to improve their schools and avoid this occurrence. Two variables were investigated: (a) the level of threat and (b) school organizational practices. Data were collected using a 55-item mail survey-questionnaire, structured to assess changes in school organizational practices perceived by teachers at the randomly selected schools. The School Organization Teacher Survey was field-tested twice to check reliability and validity. Cronbach alpha values were 0.88 and 0.93 for the pilots. The unit of analysis for this …

Value Of Worthless Lives: Italian Immigrant Autobiographies By "Ordinary People", Ilaria. Serra Jan 2004

Value Of Worthless Lives: Italian Immigrant Autobiographies By "Ordinary People", Ilaria. Serra

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

"Immigrants left tears and sweat, but no memories." This dissertation tries to prove this assertion by the Italian critic Giuseppe Prezzolini wrong. Italian immigrants have sweated and cried, but many of them also left a trace of their "heroic" voyage between two continents, and two worlds, that took place in waves during the entire XX Century. With an oxymoron, I will speak about the value of worthless lives. These authors are no conquerors, saints or celebrities, but they believe that their life stories are worth being written and remembered. There are many direct ties between the experience of migration and …

Veil And The State: Debating The Unveiling And Re-Veiling Of Women In Twentieth-Century Iran, Masoud. Talachian Jan 2004

Veil And The State: Debating The Unveiling And Re-Veiling Of Women In Twentieth-Century Iran, Masoud. Talachian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Hijab, the Islamic dress code, in Muslim communities is a sensitive and controversial issue. It embodies religious doctrine and patriarchal policies. However, in Iran this concept entails a more exclusive significance due to the strict nature of the Shiite faith, which is prevalent in Iran, along with a volatile political system and harsh practices of patriarchy and male domination that are legitimized by Iranian culture and traditions. The legacy of veiling in Iran is not a product of Islam and Islamic laws. Such a practice had existed in Iran centuries before the appearance of Islam in Mecca. The veil predates …

Values Underlying The Parental Selection Of Charter Schools: A Multi-Site Case Analysis, Patricia Ann Grimsley Jan 2004

Values Underlying The Parental Selection Of Charter Schools: A Multi-Site Case Analysis, Patricia Ann Grimsley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This multi-site case analysis investigated the values underlying the parental selection of charter schools. The conceptual framework of this study was school choice within the public sector and more specifically charter schools. The research design employed in-depth interviews and data analysis. A purposeful sample with random selection was used to select the eighteen parent participants. The principals were serving as principals of the schools at the time of the study. All research questions were answered by the data analysis: How do the values of parents influence their selection of charter schools for their children? Parents were looking for alternatives to …

A Boundary Element Method For Thermo-Poroelasticity With Applications In Rock Mechanics, Qiang Zhang Jan 2004

A Boundary Element Method For Thermo-Poroelasticity With Applications In Rock Mechanics, Qiang Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Coupled thermal and poromechanical processes play an important role in many geomechanics problems, such as borehole stability analysis and studies of initiation and propagation of hydraulic fractures. Thermal effects, as well as hydraulic effects, can greatly change the stresses and pore pressure fields around an underground opening. This is due to the fact that thermal loading induces a volumetric deformation because of thermal expansion/contraction of both the pore fluid and the rock solid. Volumetric expansion can result in significant pressurization of the pore fluid. In order to take into account the influence of temperature gradients on pore pressure and stresses, …

Predicting Dynamics Of Aggregate Loafing Behavior In Glaucous-Winged Gulls (Larus Glaucescens) At A Washington Colony, Shandelle M. Henson, James L. Hayward, Christina M. Burden, Clara J. Logan, Joseph G. Galusha Jan 2004

Predicting Dynamics Of Aggregate Loafing Behavior In Glaucous-Winged Gulls (Larus Glaucescens) At A Washington Colony, Shandelle M. Henson, James L. Hayward, Christina M. Burden, Clara J. Logan, Joseph G. Galusha

Faculty Publications

Seabirds move throughout the day in changing, patchy environments as they engage in various behaviors. We studied the diurnal abundance dynamics of Glaucous-winged Gulls (Larus glaucescens) in a habitat patch dedicated to loafing in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Washington. We constructed three differential equation models as alternative hypotheses and then used model selection techniques to choose the one that most accurately described the system. We validated the model on an independent data set, made a priori model predictions, and conducted a field test of the predictions. Clear dynamic patterns emerged in the abundance of loafing gulls, even though …

Inclusive Ks0Ks0 production in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA has been studied with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 120 pb-1. Two states are observed at masses of 1537-8-9 MeV and 1726 ± 7 MeV, as well as an enhancement around 1300 MeV. The state at 1537 MeV is consistent with the well established f′2(1525). The state at 1726 MeV may be the glueball candidate f0(1710). However, it's width of 38 -14-20 MeV is narrower than 125 ± 10 MeV observed by previous experiments for the f0(1710). © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Leaky Boundaries And The Decline Of The Autonomous Law School Library, James G. Milles Jan 2004

Leaky Boundaries And The Decline Of The Autonomous Law School Library, James G. Milles

Journal Articles

Academic law librarians have long insisted on the value of autonomy from the university library system, usually basing their arguments on strict adherence to ABA standards. However, law librarians have failed to construct an explicit and consistent definition of autonomy. Lacking such a definition, they have tended to rely on an outmoded Langdellian view of the law as a closed system. This view has long been discredited, as approaches such as law and economics and sociolegal research have become mainstream, and courts increasingly resort to nonlegal sources of information. Blind attachment to autonomy as a goal rather than a means …

Report To Law Revision Commission Regarding Recommendations For Changes To California Arbitration Law, Roger P. Alford Jan 2004

Report To Law Revision Commission Regarding Recommendations For Changes To California Arbitration Law, Roger P. Alford

Journal Articles

In this Article, Professor Alford discusses a report by the Law Revision Commission recommending that certain changes be made to arbitration law in California. It begins by outlining the history of arbitration in California, from its 1961 adoption of the Uniform Arbitration Act, to the 1988 enactment of an international arbitration statute modeled on the UNCITRAL Model Law, to the 1989 enactment of Section 1281.8, which allowed courts to grants provisions remedies to parties involved in arbitration proceedings. It also provides a general overview of the purpose and practice of arbitration law. Then, it provides a chapter-by-chapter analysis the Law …
