Lost In "Conceptual Space" : Metaphors Of Conceptual Integration, L. David Ritchie Jan 2004

Lost In "Conceptual Space" : Metaphors Of Conceptual Integration, L. David Ritchie

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Conceptual integration theory (Fauconnier & Turner, 1998, 2002) is re-examined in the light of recent criticisms (e.g., Gibbs, 2000, 2001). It is argued that the assumption of four independent "cognitive spaces" enters the model primarily as an entailment of the "space," "blending," and "construction" metaphors, leads to unnecessary ambiguity, and works against statement of the theory in a form that supports derivation of testable hypotheses. Several examples from Fauconnier and Turner (2002) are analyzed to show that they can be interpreted more simply, without need of four separate "spaces." Suggestions are made for reformulating conceptual integration theory without the problematic …

The Invention Of The Classics: Nationalism, Philology And Cultural Politics In Argentina, Fernando Degiovanni Jan 2004

The Invention Of The Classics: Nationalism, Philology And Cultural Politics In Argentina, Fernando Degiovanni

Publications and Research

By the end of 1915, two inexpensive book series devoted to the diffusion of colonial and nineteenth-century texts flooded the shelves of Argentine bookstores. Their deliberately resonant and all-encompassing names - La Biblioteca Argentina (The Argentine Library) and La Cultura Argentina (Argentine Culture) - were unmistakable signs of their nationalist character and aims. Developed respectively by Ricardo Rojas and José lngenieros, two of the most important intellectuals of Centennial Argentina, the nearly simultaneous launch of both series also underscored the editors' enduring competition to promote their contrasting versions of the nation's political and cultural past. The timing of the series' …

Reconfiguring Childhood Boys And Girls Growing Up Global, Cindi Katz Jan 2004

Reconfiguring Childhood Boys And Girls Growing Up Global, Cindi Katz

Publications and Research

Children are a spur, a commitment, a way of imaging the future—but all too often these sorts of phrases just rattle around a vacuum, their utterance the beginning and end of the commitment. We emphasize “the best interests of the child,”but this gloss provides a moral imperative to all manner of uncompleted projects and unfulfilled policies. Likewise, the use of children’s images or presence in public forums of all types gives a patina of honorableness to practices and plans that never actually make good on the promissory note of childhood. The 1992 Rio Earth Summit is a notable example. Such …

Creative Uses Of Cultural Genres, Colette Daiute Jan 2004

Creative Uses Of Cultural Genres, Colette Daiute

Publications and Research

Telling - or writing - a story about an event in your life is telling a social story. Autobiographical narrations are also, to be sure, personal and unique, but the social nature of narrating is often overlooked in research and education. In particular, to appreciate what young people are doing when we ask them to share their personal experiences in public institutions like school, we need a theory to guide our reading of narratives as conversations.

This chapter focuses on how young narrators juggle the demanding yet potentially rewarding activity of narrating in public settings, and it offers insights for …

Berlín Era Una Festa: Capllonch Vist Pels Seus Contemporanis A Alemanya, Antoni Pizà

Publications and Research

Prostitution, Hustling, And Sex Work Law And Policy, Polly Thistlethwaite Jan 2004

Prostitution, Hustling, And Sex Work Law And Policy, Polly Thistlethwaite

Publications and Research

Prostitution, hustling, and sex work are forms of labor, not erotic preferences or identities as are gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender, but sex workers and queers alike are stigmatized and criminalized for consensual sexual activity. The state – federal, state, and local law enforcement – routinely interferes with certain types of sexual activity. Enforcement of laws regulating sex behavior often varies given the discretion of local police. In her 1989 essay “Thinking Sex,” Gayle Rubin positions sex-for-money, prostitution, with pornography, promiscuous sex, pornography, and homosexual sex in the low status “outer limits” of the contemporary American sex hierarchy; while heterosexual, …

Antagonism And Relational Aesthetics, Claire Bishop Jan 2004

Antagonism And Relational Aesthetics, Claire Bishop

Publications and Research

A critique of relational aesthetics, as theorized by Nicolas Bourriaud, and exemplified in the work of Rirkrit Tiravanija and Liam Gillick. Using Laclau and Mouffe's theory of democracy as antagonism, the paper proposes instead a 'relational antagonism' found in certain projects by Santiago Sierra and Thomas Hirschhorn.

North Dakota College Students' Perceptions Of Gm And Organic, Jon Charles Anderson

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

This research evaluates perceptions of genetically modified (GM) and organic food among North Dakota college students. Students responded to one of two survey instruments containing identical wording except for reference to genetic modification or organic. Students were first asked to read a primer defining genetic modification or organic production. Participants indicated level of agreement on a Likert scale. Responses to statements in the construct areas of health, environment, ethics, regulation, and risk were considered. Mean responses were compared among surveys and to responses to previous surveys of Americans and of shoppers in North Dakota. Organic food was perceived as a …

The Nuclear Pore Complex And The Dead Box Protein Rat8p/Dbp5p Have Nonessential Features Which Appear To Facilitate Mrna Export Following Heat Shock, Christiane Rollenhagen, Christine A. Hodge, Charles N. Cole Jan 2004

The Nuclear Pore Complex And The Dead Box Protein Rat8p/Dbp5p Have Nonessential Features Which Appear To Facilitate Mrna Export Following Heat Shock, Christiane Rollenhagen, Christine A. Hodge, Charles N. Cole

Dartmouth Scholarship

Nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) play an essential role in RNA export. Nucleoporins required for mRNA export in Saccharomyces cerevisiae are found in the Nup84p and Nup82p subcomplexes of the NPC. The Nup82p subcomplex contains Nup82p, Rat7p/Nup159p, Nsp1p, Gle1p/Rss1p, and Rip1p/Nup42p and is found only on the cytoplasmic face of NPCs. Both Rat7p and Gle1p contain binding sites for Rat8p/Dbp5p, an essential DEAD box protein and putative RNA helicase. Rip1p interacts directly with Gle1p and is the only protein known to be essential for mRNA export after heat shock but not under normal growth conditions. We report that in cells lacking …

Prospect Theory And The Cyprus Conflict: Analyzing Decisionmaking In The Turkish Cypriot President, Tarah Marie Wheeler Jan 2004

Prospect Theory And The Cyprus Conflict: Analyzing Decisionmaking In The Turkish Cypriot President, Tarah Marie Wheeler

Political Science Masters Theses

Rauf R. Denktash, the Turkish Cypriot president and leader of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, has made many decisions not to negotiate with his Greek Cypriot counterpart for peace and reunification on the island of Cyprus. Traditional rational choice theories do not explain his willingness to sacrifice political power for his policy goals in risky choices. Prospect theory, a cognitive behavioral theory of decisionmaking, may help to explain why Denktash makes those risky choices by showing that decisionmakers who feel themselves to be in the domain of losses will make risky choices to gain their reference point, the location …

The Capital Asset Pricing Model: Theory And Evidence, Eugene F. Fama, Kenneth R. French Jan 2004

The Capital Asset Pricing Model: Theory And Evidence, Eugene F. Fama, Kenneth R. French

Dartmouth Scholarship

The capital asset pricing model (CAPM) of William Sharpe (1964) and John Lintner (1965) marks the birth of asset pricing theory (resulting in a Nobel Prize for Sharpe in 1990). Before their breakthrough, there were no asset pricing models built from first principles about the nature of tastes and investment opportunities and with clear testable predictions about risk and return. Four decades later, the CAPM is still widely used in applications, such as estimating the cost of equity capital for firms and evaluating the performance of managed portfolios. And it is the centerpiece, indeed often the only asset pricing model …

Satisfaction With Provider Communication Among Spanish-Speaking Medicaid Enrollees, David M. Mosen, Matthew J. Carlson, Leo S. Morales, Pamela P. Hanes

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

OBJECTIVE: To determine if differences between English- and Spanish-speaking parents in ratings of their children's health care can be explained by need for interpretive services.

METHODS: Using the Consumer Assessment of Health Plans Survey-Child-Survey (CAHPS), reports about provider communication were compared among 3 groups of parents enrolled in a Medicaid managed care health plan: 1) English speakers, 2) Spanish speakers with no self-reported need for interpretive services, and 3) Spanish speakers with self-reported need for interpretive services. Parents were asked to report how well their providers 1) listened carefully to what was being said, 2) explained things in a way …

Promoting Inclusion In Child Care Centers: Learning From Success, Jennifer R. Bradley, Shane Ama, Maria Gettman, Eileen M. Brennan, Peris W. Kibera

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this article is to share findings from research on nine child care centers that successfully provided child care for children with emotional and behavioral challenges alongside their peers without specific challenges (Brennan, Bradley, Ama, & Cawood, 2003). Following a brief overview of the research study, we focus a lens on the classroom, where staff selected and developed practices that included all children. The lens is then widened to view a broader picture of inclusion, such as the ways that the centers work with families, and the structure and culture of the organizations.

Building Active Communities: Linking Lents, Carolyn Bonner, Dan Bower, Heather Marren, Michael Rose, Beth Shuck, Rania Wasfy Jan 2004

Building Active Communities: Linking Lents, Carolyn Bonner, Dan Bower, Heather Marren, Michael Rose, Beth Shuck, Rania Wasfy

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

The purpose of the Linking Lents Project is to increase opportunities for physical activity in the Lents neighborhood. Both programming changes and physical changes to the built environment are needed to accomplish this goal. While a trailhead in the Lents neighborhood will attract some new users to the trail, a trailhead alone may not greatly increase trail use. A Lents trailhead constructed in conjunction with improved overall access to the trail, connections to neighborhood amenities and public education of the benefits of increased physical activity will increase Lents residents’ use of the trail. This project was conducted under the supervision …

The Power Of Place: Building Community Character On Se Division Street, Quinn Fahey, Josh Birks, Jeff Caudill, John Mermin, Kenneth Radin Jan 2004

The Power Of Place: Building Community Character On Se Division Street, Quinn Fahey, Josh Birks, Jeff Caudill, John Mermin, Kenneth Radin

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

The Power of Place study assists DVC in fulfilling that mission by pursuing an understanding of the street’s character and identifying opportunities for future development or continued investment. Both aspects of this study establish the foundation necessary for the Coalition to become proactive in development processes and maintain the attributes that most significantly contribute to the character of the street. To that end, the study looked to achieve three primary objectives:

  1. Develop a body of knowledge that can steer DVC toward community desires and objectives regarding Division St. development.
  2. Based on that knowledge, identify sites along Division that hold potential …

Sustainable Options For Division Street, Matt Burlin, William Hawley, Alisa Kane, David Moser, Dana Visse

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

To reflect the Division Vision Coalition's (DVC) desire to promote neighborhood livability through sustainable development, Team Urbanics offered a series of community workshops in May 2004 that explored the concepts of sustainable development. The goals of the "Sustainable Options for Division Street" workshops were to:

  • Provide DVC with an educational tool that enhances the public’s awareness of sustainable development options
  • Encourage public participation in upcoming redevelopment planning efforts
  • Promote sustainable practices, including environmental protection, economic development, and social equity, and
  • Create a forum for civil discourse, for neighbors to meet neighbors, and for people to learn new things about their …
