Revealing At The Unraveling, Marie Florence Griffin
Theses
This thesis paper exhibits the progression of my photographic studies over the last two years at The Rochester Institute of Technology. This thesis paper explains the thought process behind the art work and defines the influences and interpretation within each body of work. Through digital processes the work portrays issues of identity that revolve around the body politic through the dictates of Western culture, particularly advertising, on the body's surface. The images also emphasize the emotional responses resulting from the violence, seduction and manipulation that culture presumes on an individual's identity.

Migration From Windows To Linux For A Small Engineering Firm "A&G Associates", Trimbak Vohra
Theses
The primary objectives of this paper are to complete a Masters Degree in Information Technology as required by Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York, and to assist a small engineering firm in evaluating the possibilities of migrating from Microsoft Windows to a Linux Operating System. A recent announcement that Microsoft will limit support on some of their existing commonly used operating systems, along with their monopoly in the marketplace, will continue to allow them to sell licenses at high prices. These factors could force many companies to consider transiting to other operating systems which offer more support services and …

A Study Into The Utilization Of Value-Added Services In Commercial Printing Companies, Kalpana Chhita
A Study Into The Utilization Of Value-Added Services In Commercial Printing Companies, Kalpana Chhita
Theses
Today's printing industry is in a state of transition. It has become an industry that no longer solely relies on print for sustainability. Thus, printers as well as print service providers are incorporating different strategies into their business models to provide the types of services that customers now require in order to achieve their own business goals (Cummings and Chhita, 2004). This research was conducted in an effort to better understand the impact of these emerging trends. The primary objectives were: 1) to clearly understand the changing business dynamics in the printing industry, 2) to determine whether there is a …

The Application Of Proteomics To Pseudomonas Putida F1, Han Hoang
Theses
Through years of technology development, the drug industry has been able to synthesize many valuable medicines to provide better health care. However, any time a new medication (or industrial chemical for that matter) is made; it must be tested to ensure that it is not carcinogenic. For years, scientists have worked to design a screening method that is fast, efficient, and reliable. Currently, the most widely-used method used is the Ames test [1]. This test has both strengths and weaknesses which will be discussed. In this project, Two Dimensional Electrophoresis (2DE) is used to monitor protein expression in Pseudomonas putida …
Accessible Solutions: The Value Of Accessible Web Design, Edwin L N Thoms
Accessible Solutions: The Value Of Accessible Web Design, Edwin L N Thoms
Theses
An exploration of techniques and theories that will help Web and Multimedia designers understand and implement design solutions for accessible web content is the basis of this thesis report. A rich online environment for all people (disabled and non-disabled) will emerge once strategies are in place for designers to research, test, and implement standards of accessible design. The concept of accessibility is explored, and misconceptions regarding accessible standards and practices are dispelled. The research report covers the laws and standards set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). …
The Semantic Web … Sounds Logical!, Anthony J. Radogna Jr
The Semantic Web … Sounds Logical!, Anthony J. Radogna Jr
Theses
The Semantic Web will be an enabling technology for the future because as all of life's components continue to progress and evolve, the demand on us as humans will continue to increase. Work will expect more productivity; family will demand more quality time, and even leisure activities will be technologically advanced. With these variables in mind, I believe humans will demand technologies that help to simplify this treacherous lifestyle. As patterns already indicate, one of the driving forces of technological development is efficiency. Developers are consistently looking for ways to make life's demands less strenuous and more streamlined. The benefits …

The modern law of federal habeas corpus is a labyrinth of counterfactuals and arcane procedural hurdles that few state petitioners manage to navigate-as Justice Blackmun once wrote less charitably in dissent, "a Byzantine morass of arbitrary, unnecessary, and unjustifiable impediments to the vindication of federal rights." The convoluted inquiries required arise from the need to reconcile three developments of the past four decades that remain in tension with one another: first, the Warren Court's expansion of federal habeas relief, identified with Fay v. Noia and its progeny; second, the Burger and Rehnquist Courts' curtailment of that expansion, identified with Wainwright …
Is Equity Compensation Tax Advantaged?, David I. Walker
Is Equity Compensation Tax Advantaged?, David I. Walker
Faculty Scholarship
Employees who receive stock options and other forms of equity compensation generally are able to defer paying tax on this compensation for years, sometimes decades. In a rising market this deferral results in a tax benefit at the employee level. This article asks whether the employee-level tax benefit in a rising market results in a global tax advantage for companies that rely heavily on equity compensation and their employees. There are two primary issues. First, on initial inspection one might conclude that the employee-level benefit in a rising market is offset by a disadvantage in a stagnant or declining market. …

Legal And Ethical Duties Of Lawyers After Sarbanes-Oxley, Roger C. Cramton, George M. Cohen, Susan P. Koniak
Faculty Scholarship
This Article examines the legal and ethical duties of lawyers after Sarbanes-Oxley, focusing on the application, interpretation and ambiguities of the SEC rule implementing Section 307. Although our primary frame of reference will be on the SEC's new rules as an aspect of lawyer regulation, those rules are part of federal securities laws and should be considered in that aspect, i.e., whether they advance the purposes of the federal securities laws. The rules affecting lawyers should not be assessed in a vacuum as a mere turf war between federal regulators on the one hand and the organized bar and its …
Bidder Collusion And Antitrust Law: Refining The Analysis Of Price Fixing To Account For The Special Features Of Auction Markets, Robert C. Marshall, Michael J. Meurer
Bidder Collusion And Antitrust Law: Refining The Analysis Of Price Fixing To Account For The Special Features Of Auction Markets, Robert C. Marshall, Michael J. Meurer
Faculty Scholarship
Courts and commentators have painstakingly analyzed antitrust policy toward horizontal price fixing, but surprisingly, one of the most common forms of price fixing--bidder collusion-has escaped the sustained attention of antitrust lawyers. We attribute this inattention to the mistaken belief that the economics of bidder collusion is essentially equivalent to the economics of price fixing in posted-price markets. However, there are significant differences regarding the economics of collusion in auction and procurement markets as compared to posted-price markets, and we derive antitrust policy recommendations that apply specifically to bidder collusion in this article.

Journal of Dispute Resolution
One of the primary goals of the Center for the Study of Dispute Resolution (CSDR) at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law has been to develop innovative and alternative teaching models that prepare law students to be better, more responsive lawyers and to broaden the philosophical maps (or mental models or mind sets) with which they approach their work
Damages As Narrative, Melody Richardson Daily
Damages As Narrative, Melody Richardson Daily
Journal of Dispute Resolution
Let's begin with a thought experiment. Imagine that the year is 2030 and you are a successful attorney. One day you receive a call from a legal scholar who tells you that she is writing a book about legal education at the beginning of the twenty-first century, and she invites you to contribute a chapter. She explains that your chapter should be twenty to thirty pages long, but that the content is entirely up to you. Because you enjoy writing, you agree to write the chapter.
Teaching And Learning From The Mediations In Barry Werth's Damages, Leonard L. Riskin
Teaching And Learning From The Mediations In Barry Werth's Damages, Leonard L. Riskin
Journal of Dispute Resolution
The two mediations in the book Damages, illuminate much about mediation in today's litigation environment - even though they took place in 1993 and each was, in its own way, quite unusual. for that reason - and because we have few good detailed descriptions of real mediations - I have used these two mediations to teach in a variety of settings. First, they served as one of several focuses in the course based on this book, called Damages: A Case Study, that we taught at the University of Missouri-Columbia, School of Law in the winter 2002 and 2003 semesters. In …

"[I]t is difficult ... to imagine an event or transaction that does not involve insurance in some way."' So it is with the most salient event in the lives of Tony and Donna Sabia, whose son Tony John Sabia, or "Little Tony," was born with profound disabilities. In the final analysis, the ability of Tony and Donna to pay for the future medical care and living expenses needed by their son depends on whether they can reach the liability insurance coverage possessed by the health care providers who attended Donna and Little Tony at the time of his birth. It …
