New Strategies To Determine The Distribution Of Trace Elements In Soils And Sediments, Rebeca Santamaria-Fernandez
New Strategies To Determine The Distribution Of Trace Elements In Soils And Sediments, Rebeca Santamaria-Fernandez
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Sequential chemical extraction to fractionate metals in soils and sediments into different groups reflecting their "leachability" has been widely employed to determine distribution of metals in different physico-chemical phases. A large number of sequential extraction schemes have been reported, most of them modifications of Tessier's extraction protocol. Although this method has been widely accepted, it is important to highlight that sequential extraction procedures are often tedious and time consuming and that they also suffer from a number of limitations, such as the problem of achieving selective dissolution and the re-adsorption of trace metals during extraction. The objective of this study …
Development Of Water Resources In Bahrain: A Combined Approach Of Supply-Demand Analysis, Mubarak Aman Al-Noaimi
Development Of Water Resources In Bahrain: A Combined Approach Of Supply-Demand Analysis, Mubarak Aman Al-Noaimi
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Bahrain is an arid country with acute water shortage problems. The demand for water has increased substantially over the last four decades, leading to over-exploitation from the already scarce renewable groundwater resources. This has caused a significant decline in groundwater levels, a drastic storage depletion, and serious deterioration in groundwater quality. The imbalance between the available water supply and the projected water demand has been growing rapidly, imposing a major constraint on the country's socio-economic development. Resolving these problems or at least mitigating their adverse impacts primarily requires a major shift from the supply-oriented approach to water planning, which is …

Foundations In Wisconsin: A Directory [23rd Ed. 2004], Mary C. Frenn, Rebecca Cesarz, Katie Schrader, Vance Thomas, Lisa Zongolowicz
Foundations in Wisconsin: A Directory
This 2004 edition of Foundations in Wisconsin marks the 23rd release of the print directory and the 4th year of the online version. The directory is designed as a research tool for grantseekers interested in locating information on private, corporate, and community foundations registered in Wisconsin. Each entry in this new edition has been updated or reviewed to provide the most current information available. Most of the data was extracted from IRS 990-PF tax returns filed by the foundations. However, additional information was obtained from surveys, annual reports, and foundation Web sites.
Wisconsin foundations have shown small increases …
Biodegradation, Water Solubility And Characterisation Studies Of Unresolved Complex Mixtures (Ucms) Of Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Andrew Michael Booth
Biodegradation, Water Solubility And Characterisation Studies Of Unresolved Complex Mixtures (Ucms) Of Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Andrew Michael Booth
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Following release to the environment, crude oil becomes subject to weathering processes which remove the simple, volatile hydrocarbons leaving an unresolved complex mixture (UCM) comprising the more environmentally persistent components. Aromatic UCMs have been reported in a wide variety of environmental matrices. Recent studies indicate such material, particularly monoaromatic hydrocarbons, is sufficiently bioavailable to marine organisms (e. g. mussels) to elicit toxicological responses. However, little else is known about the environmental fate and composition of petroleum-derived aromatic UCMs. The overall aim of this work was to investigate aromatic UCMs with particular emphasis on their biodegradability, water solubility and composition. To …

Design: A single blind randomised controlled trial comparing two models of care for patients with simple acute low back pain (ALBP).
Objectives: To compare two research-based models of care for ALBP, and investigate the effect of the timing of physical intervention. Summary of Background Data National guidelines offer conflicting information on the delivery of physical treatment in the management of ALBP. Review of guidelines suggests two different models of care. Direct comparisons between these models are lacking in the literature. The present study aims to compare these two approaches to the management of ALBP.
Method: Among 804 referred patients, 102 …
The Antebellum Political Background Of The Fourteenth Amendment, Garrett Epps
The Antebellum Political Background Of The Fourteenth Amendment, Garrett Epps
All Faculty Scholarship
Understanding the Fourteenth Amendment is the key question of Constitutional law, both as it pertains to individual rights and, in many areas, as it relates to questions of Congressional power as opposed to the reserved powers of the states. The Amendment is often disaggregated and read clause by clause - but the intellectual and political background of its framers suggests that the Amendment in fact forms a coherent whole and that reading it as a whole might be a fertile source of new meanings. The Amendment was written by politicians who had spent their careers deeply involved in anti-slavery politics. …
Expansion And Restriction: Competing Pressures On United Kingdom Asylum Policy, Elizabeth Keyes
Expansion And Restriction: Competing Pressures On United Kingdom Asylum Policy, Elizabeth Keyes
All Faculty Scholarship
Analysis of asylum policy in the United Kingdom thus requires examination of the complex interaction between domestic and international pressures, between legislative and judicial action, and between expansionism and restrictionism. In Part I, this paper considers the history of asylum in the UK through the 1990s, looking at the changes that occurred over the 20th century, and the international legal obligations at the core of the UK's asylum policy. The paper specifically addresses Britain's new commitments to European Union asylum policies, and the ways in which Britain's overall relationship with the EU affects Britain's domestic asylum policy. In Part II, …

Longitudinal Patterns Of Intimate Partner Violence, Risk, Well-Being, And Employment: Preliminary Findings, Jane C. Murphy, Mary Ann Dutton, Lisa A. Goodman, Dorothy J. Lennig
All Faculty Scholarship
Over 7 months (June 1999 to January 2000), researchers recruited 406 women from 1 of 3 sites in a northeastern city at the point they were seeking help for violence against them by a current or former male partner. Intimate partner violence was measured with a modified version of the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale. Some form of serious violence during the previous year was reported by 88 percent of the participants. By the first 3-month follow-up period, nearly one-third of the participants reported the recurrence of some form of physical violence; 20.4 percent reported an injury; and 18.1 percent reported …
Why Antitrust Damage Levels Should Be Raised, Robert H. Lande
Why Antitrust Damage Levels Should Be Raised, Robert H. Lande
All Faculty Scholarship
The conventional wisdom is that current antitrust damage levels are too high, lead to overdeterrence, and should be cut back. Although most agree that threefold damages are fine, at least for cartels, the combination of treble damages to direct purchasers and another treble damages to indirect purchasers typically is denounced as duplicative, a "mess," or the equivalent of the use of "cluster bombs" on defendants. This article, however, will assert the opposite. This article will argue that, if the current antitrust damage levels are examined carefully, they do not even total treble damages, and overall are not high enough to …
Matching Provision To Needs : The Example Of Victim Support, Lesley Simmonds
Matching Provision To Needs : The Example Of Victim Support, Lesley Simmonds
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The current study is an evaluation of a voluntary sector service, Victim Support. The focal points of this work are the impact of crime upon victims and the extent to which they feel that Victim Support, as a service provider, has helped to restore their sense of equilibrium. In this way the success of a community response to crime is considered. The research was undertaken between 1998 and 2002 and was largely based upon the work of one local scheme; Victim Support, Plymouth. The study included the views of service users (victims of crime) and those of service providers (paid …
Film And The Dartington Experience, David Edward Hilton
Film And The Dartington Experience, David Edward Hilton
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This project is a study of Dartington under the leading question "What is Dartington?' and comprises a number of interlinked methodological phases of enquiry. The first explores Dartington's use of film as a process of documenting its experimental activities, and as a commercial product in the form of the films made and distributed by the Dartington Hall Film Unit. The second strategy engages with archive film materials in the production of compilation videos, which were then developed into a series of Photoworks designed to facilitate a personal interpretation of its particular history. The third approach resulted in the production of …

The Illustration Of Experience, Richard Jones
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis documents and describes a research project driven by the creative practice of an illustrator. It examines the proposition that the visual mark can act as a register of experience. The research comprises three bodies of work each of which address a specific issue within the broader context of the research proposition. Knowledge gained through practical exploration is discussed in the context of illustration as well as contemporary systems and models of aesthetic representation. Overview Chapter one discusses the origins of this research project and charts the establishment of a methodology. Working under the preliminary title The Illustration of …
Moving Image - Still Life, Kiki Petratou
Moving Image - Still Life, Kiki Petratou
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
MOVEMENT AND TIME "Stasis was defined according to Schrader as the form that links the everyday in something unified and permanent".' Central to my research is the aim to create a still-life image from filmed scenes documenting the everyday actions in my living environment. In some cases however the scenes being staged function as allegories of the states and situations of daily life. I decided to mix staged and 'real' scenes because I did not want to create a documentary about the activities in my environment but to transform everydayness, as I perceive it, into the permanent and unified quality …

Points On My Curve To Find: A Journey Around The Self To Find The World, Morgaine Gaye
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
My creative practice has undergone a chronological series of transformations that has entailed experiments in several modes of self-expression. This has included the writing of prose-text, lyrics, song-writing, musical performance as a vocalist, work in film-making and visual documentation and work as a visual artist. In a life that has so far spanned living for substantial periods in different countries and cultures, my creative practice has been strongly influenced by that international and inter-cultural existence. Whilst on the one hand, different cultures nevertheless manifest 'languages' of communality with each other (especially in non-verbal communication, global 'signs, signals' and 'symbols'), on …
Self(Ish)-Fusion Thinking And Practice- A (Mainly) Visual Investigation Of Poly-Modal Art-Making, Pauline Amos
Self(Ish)-Fusion Thinking And Practice- A (Mainly) Visual Investigation Of Poly-Modal Art-Making, Pauline Amos
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
If it could be seen that a 'body of training' has a crucial impact on a creative practice, my own history of 'training' would be difficult to trace within any specific discipline or mode of self-expression. I have been 'trained' as a visual artist, actor, performance-artist, and to some extent, musician/sonic performer. This coexistence of modalities with associated meta-praxis, has in fact created a set of parallel dimensions embodied within a collective of theories as well as practices. On the one hand, this collective of practices has involved a view of myself (and what I make) as a form of …
Melting Into The Margins: The Dis-Appearance Of Normality, Ruth Marie Heholt
Melting Into The Margins: The Dis-Appearance Of Normality, Ruth Marie Heholt
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Melting into the Margins intervenes in the academic and media debate about normality: the white nuclear family and white middle class men. This thesis traces the emergence of the contemporary discourse which suggests that the normal is being displaced into the margins, away from the centre, 'disproved' as a lived condition and shown to be ‘untrue’ as an ideological concept and examines the implications and effects of this discourse. A new discourse of the normal is deemed necessary by the academic disciplines of masculinity and family studies because they argue that we live in a new age of tolerance, equality, …
Experiments With The Activated Presence, Joanna Louise Mayes
Experiments With The Activated Presence, Joanna Louise Mayes
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis considers how the making of artwork can enhance or develop an experience of being present. This is done through researching what it means to be present within the moment and how this can be shared with audience. An exploration and analysis of this way of working is provided, both in terms of the research process and artwork outcomes made as a consequence of it. The entanglement of process with outcome is central, as is the interrelatedness between personal research and artworks presented to audience. Activated presence refers to a way of researching, making and presenting performative artwork; artwork …
German-Polish Cross-Border Co-Operation And The Politics Of Transgression, Ulrich Best
German-Polish Cross-Border Co-Operation And The Politics Of Transgression, Ulrich Best
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The thesis looks at German-Polish relations and the changing practices of cross-border cooperation in the 1990s. It reviews theories of border studies and argues that, in spite of all change, border studies is part of a structure of power. The author analyses the concepts of transgression and regression in order to describe the current constitution of states, borders and practice. The example of German-Polish relations shows how this constitution has changed throughout history, from a clear delineation of the Other to increasingly European discourse, especially after 1989. Cross-border co-operation, the author argues, has become integrated into the structures of power, …
The Distribution Of Attitudinal Attachment To The Male Breadwinner Role: A Quantitative Study Of The Plymouth Travel-To-Work Area, Suzanne E. Chamberlain
The Distribution Of Attitudinal Attachment To The Male Breadwinner Role: A Quantitative Study Of The Plymouth Travel-To-Work Area, Suzanne E. Chamberlain
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis is concerned with men's attitudes towards the breadwinner role. A representative sample of 330 men, aged between 17 and 84, and drawn from the Plymouth Travel-To-Work Area, participated in the study by completing a postal questionnaire. The aim of the study was to explore attachment to the breadwinner role, and to discover if greater or lesser attachment exists among particular socio-demographic or socio-economic clusters. The quantitative approach and the application of a random sample distinguish this study from those in the literature concerned with 'men and masculinities'. The study applies an empirical perspective to overview the trajectory of …
Designing The Performative Object: A Study In Designing Mindful Interaction Through Artefacts, Kristina Niedderer
Designing The Performative Object: A Study In Designing Mindful Interaction Through Artefacts, Kristina Niedderer
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis investigates the potential of design to intentionally mediate social interaction in ethical (mindful) ways. The subject of the study has evolved from observations and reflections on my own practice. In using the drinking vessel to explore the mediation of human face-to-face interaction through the artefact, the question arose whether some objects can influence interaction more actively than others. In particular, the question was whether and how an artefact can stimulate the user's behaviour by means of its function, and whether this stimulation can cause mindful reflection and interaction. The aim was to understand better the characteristics of this …
Bird Song As A Basis For New Techniques And Improvisational Practice With The Baroque Flute, Stephen Preston
Bird Song As A Basis For New Techniques And Improvisational Practice With The Baroque Flute, Stephen Preston
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Subsequent to a period of training as a flautist, I ultimately specialised professionally on the baroque flute. Consequently, a significant part of my research for a PhD was practice-led. My later career; concerned with dance and choreography, represented a widening and diversification of my interest in music in particular, and the allied arts in general. This was (and continues to be) paralleled, however, with a substantial research-interest in aspects of the performance of music and its potential interconnection(s) with modalities of speech. However, my own research commenced with a strong desire to discover new performance techniques on the baroque flute. …
'Missing Youth' : A Discourse Analysis Of Policy Formulation On 'Child Prostitution', Lyvinia Elleschild
'Missing Youth' : A Discourse Analysis Of Policy Formulation On 'Child Prostitution', Lyvinia Elleschild
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Contemporary policy critics note that the concept of `youth' is of limited use and is `disappearing as a meaningful social category' (Jeffs and Smith 1999: 46). This thesis argues that although the concept of `youth' is flawed, without `youth' young people may be infantilised in policy formulation through being represented and managed as children. In order to argue that the concept of `youth' is both meaningful and useful recent policy formulation on `child prostitution' will be analysed. Throughout the 1990s Barnardo's, the Children's Society and radical feminists campaigned to redefine acts of prostitution by under-eighteens as `child sexual abuse', and …

Pathology, East Africa
In eastern and southern Africa, there has been a rapid increase in the prevalence of alleles with mutations in the Plasmodium falciparum dihydrofolate reductase gene (dhfr) associated with increased risk of clinical failure of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (S/P). Molecular methods for surveillance of these mutations are now widespread, but the usual analysis detects only the most prevalent allele in a polyclonal sample. We used a yeast-expression system to identify rare, highly pyrimethamine-resistant alleles of dhfr in isolates from 5 African countries-Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Gabon, and Nigeria. Only the isolates from Nigeria yielded significant numbers of novel resistant alleles, and only 1 of …

Pathology, East Africa
The serious threat posed by the spread of drug-resistant malaria in Africa has been widely acknowledged. Chloroquine resistance is now almost universal, and resistance to the successor drug, sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP), is growing rapidly. Combination therapy has been suggested as being an available and potentially lasting solution to this impending crisis. However, the current cost of combination therapy, and especially that of artemisinin combination therapy (ACT), is potentially a serious drawback, even if a significant part of its cost is passed on to the end-user. If the question of cost is not successfully addressed this could lead to adverse results from …

Higher Il-10 Levels Are Associated With Less Effective Clearance Of Plasmodium Falciparum Parasites, E. Hugosson, S.M. Montgomery, Zul Premji, M. Troye-Blomberg, A. Bjorkman
Pathology, East Africa
The implications of high levels of the immune regulatory cytokine IL-10 in Plasmodium falciparum malaria are unclear. IL-10 may down-regulate pro-inflammatory responses and also exacerbate disease by inhibiting anti-parasitic immune functions. To study possible inhibiting effects on parasite clearance, IL-10 plasma levels were determined in 104 Tanzanian children, 1 to 4 years old, with acute uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria, and analysed for association with parasite densities during 3 days of anti-malarial treatment. Higher baseline IL-10 plasma levels were associated with statistically significantly higher parasite densities after 24, 48 and 72 h of treatment. These associations could not be explained by …

Licensing Health Care Professionals: Has The United States Outlived The Need For Medical Licensure?, Gregory Dolin
All Faculty Scholarship
With an expanding market for what is now known as "complimentary and alternative" medicine (CAM), states are increasingly facing the issue of who can and who should be allowed to practice medicine. Of necessity, this question also concerns whom patients may see to treat their ailments.
This paper will argue that the struggle to define who is and who is not licensed to practice medicine is rather fruitless and will always leave patients with less choice than they desire. Part II will review the history of licensure in the United States. Parts III and IV will focus on benefits and …
