Multiple Experts: Scientific, Medical, Media And Lay Discourses On 'New Genetics', Clare Elizabeth Wilkinson Jan 2004

Multiple Experts: Scientific, Medical, Media And Lay Discourses On 'New Genetics', Clare Elizabeth Wilkinson

Other Faculty of Health Theses

The significance of public relationships with scientific and medical expertise has increasingly been highlighted as an area of importance in governmental policy formulation and scientific activities. Central to this relationship has been the role of the media, frequently depicted as increasing the strained communications between science, medicine and the public in the present UK 'crisis' of expertise. Sociological research has contributed to our understandings of science, medicine, the media and lay knowledge. The research presented in this thesis correlates these contributions. It focuses on 'new genetics' to elicit the views towards communication and understanding expressed by three groups; media professionals, …

Cell Cycle Of Emiliania Huxleyi And Its Effects On Host: Virus Interactions, Rebecca Louise Jefferson Jan 2004

Cell Cycle Of Emiliania Huxleyi And Its Effects On Host: Virus Interactions, Rebecca Louise Jefferson

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Emiliania huxleyi is an ecologically important marine phytoplankton and it is regularly forms large blooms. Viruses are an important agent of mortality in blooms, however, little is known about the host:virus interactions in this system. This project investigated how infection at different stages of the host cell cycle influenced: virus adsorption, infection and production and host lysis and cell cycle. Cultures were infected during the G1 , S or G2 + M phase and monitored for 2 hours for adsorption and infection or monitored for 48 hours for virus production, host lysis and host cell cycle. A three fold increase …

Organochlorine Pesticides In Chlorioallantoic Membranes Of Morelet's Crocodile Eggs From Belize, Christopher B. Pepper, Thomas R. Rainwater, Steven G. Platt, Jennifer A. Dever, Todd A. Anderson, Scott T. Mcmurry

Biology Faculty Publications

Recent studies examined the utility of the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) as a nonlethal, noninvasive indicator of environmental contaminant exposure in oviparous wildlife. The CAM is a highly vascularized extraembryonic membrane that functions as a site for respiration, nutrient transport, and waste storage during embryonic development. After hatching, the CAM is usually discarded with the eggshell and can be used for chemical residue analysis. Chorioallantoic membranes have been used successfully to examine contaminant exposure and predict chemical concentrations in multiple species of birds and reptiles. In this study, we examined organochlorine (OC) pesticide concentrations in CAMs from eggs of Morelet's crocodiles …

Development Without Refugee Rights? A Civil Society Response, Merrill Smith Jan 2004

Development Without Refugee Rights? A Civil Society Response, Merrill Smith

Fordham International Law Journal

More than 300 non-governmental organizations (“NGOs”) and notable individuals from around the world have endorsed the Statement Calling for Solutions to End the Warehousing of Refugees, half representing refugees in or from the southern hemisphere. These NGOs are not just signing statements but taking concrete actions in donor and host nations to reshape the refugee protection agenda. Such international breadth of support is the beginning of a coordinated campaign to bring pressure to bear on the relevant parties.

The "Friendly But Cautious" Reception Of International Law In The Jurisprudence Of The South African Constitutional Court: Some Critical Remarks, Erika De Wet Jan 2004

The "Friendly But Cautious" Reception Of International Law In The Jurisprudence Of The South African Constitutional Court: Some Critical Remarks, Erika De Wet

Fordham International Law Journal

As the title indicates, the purpose of this Article is to reflect on the manner in which the South African Constitutional Court has dealt with the application of international law during its first decade. It attempts to add a critical note to the overwhelmingly positive attention the Court has thus far received internationally. There is no doubt that the inspiration that the Court has thus far drawn from international (human rights) law is impressive, and in many ways exemplary. Nonetheless, there is still room for improvement, as the subsequent analysis reveals. In analyzing the Court's methodology, this article does not …

Curriculum As Medium For Sense Making: Giving Expression To Teaching/Learning Aesthetically, Margaret A. Macintyre Latta Jan 2004

Curriculum As Medium For Sense Making: Giving Expression To Teaching/Learning Aesthetically, Margaret A. Macintyre Latta

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

I think my painting experience holds tremendous possibilities for teaching/learning of all kinds. In reflecting on the significance of the art-making experience to me, I find that what I value is not so much art but the experience of making art: an experience that values my knowings, interpretations, and expressions; an experience that involves me in constructing meaning for myself; an experience that relies on dialogue and participation as a means to this sense making; an experience that has to be felt and lived through as a whole. In so doing, I find myself absorbed in relations that could never …

Meeting The Literacy Development Needs Of Adolescent English Language Learners Through Content Area Learning - Part One: Focus On Motivation And Engagement, Julie Meltzer, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This paper highlights the substantial overlap in recommended practices from two emerging areas of educational research: research on the academic literacy development of adolescents and research on English language learners (ELLs) in secondary schools. Specifically, this paper examines instructional principles related to the connection between students’ motivation and engagement and their literacy development as supported by both bodies of literature. These principles include making connections to students’ lives, creating responsive classrooms, and having students interact with each other and with text. This paper is the first of two papers based on the same reviews of the adolescent literacy and adolescent …

The Local Framing Of Latino Educational Policy, Edmund T. Hamann Jan 2004

The Local Framing Of Latino Educational Policy, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

In many parts of the country, Latino newcomers are encountering educational policies that were framed by non-Latino local leaders. This study, an ethnography of educational policy, depicts an unorthodox assemblage of policy framers from both the United States and Mexico who shaped the local education policies aimed at Latino newcomers in Dalton, GA, in the 1990s. The study considers the evolving underlying understandings of these framers and the strategies that resulted, considering also why a temporary consensus that launched an impressive initiative—the Georgia Project—ultimately

Nursing Students' Experiences In Personal Spiritual Formation And In Provision Of Spiritual Care To Patients, Beverly Jane Cobb Jan 2004

Nursing Students' Experiences In Personal Spiritual Formation And In Provision Of Spiritual Care To Patients, Beverly Jane Cobb

Dissertations

Problem. Nursing professionals acknowledge that (a) spiritual care is part of holistic care, and (b) nursing education about spiritual care of patients is inadequate. Evidence points to the importance of personal faith and spirituality in order for the nurse to more effectively render spiritual care to patients. Enhancing knowledge about how nursing students learn spiritual care can benefit nursing education and, ultimately, patient care. This study explored how students with high faith maturity provided spiritual nursing care to patients.

Method. This study engaged phenomenological methods with a study population selected from two faith-based educational institutions. A total of 187 nursing …

Administrator Perceptions Of Internet-Based Distance Education In Adventist Colleges And Universities : A Mixed-Method Study, Pamela K. Cress Jan 2004

Administrator Perceptions Of Internet-Based Distance Education In Adventist Colleges And Universities : A Mixed-Method Study, Pamela K. Cress

Dissertations

Problem . The quality of Internet-based distance education (IBDE) will increasingly become the standard by which students choose a program as higher educational options multiply due to the dramatic growth in distance education. A system-wide examination of perceptions of IBDE in Adventist highereducation is important to administrators for future institutional strategic planning purposes, systemic adoption of policies and practices that promote excellence, and identifying collaborative efforts.

Method . This was a sequential exploratory mixed-method study of the perceptions of administrators on IBDE. It was conducted collaboratively with Susan Smith who examined teacher perceptions. Data were collected for both studies from …

Job Satisfaction And Organizational Commitment Among Teachers In Norway : A Comparative Study Of Selected Schools From Public And Private Educational Systems, Styrkår A. Dramstad Jan 2004

Job Satisfaction And Organizational Commitment Among Teachers In Norway : A Comparative Study Of Selected Schools From Public And Private Educational Systems, Styrkår A. Dramstad

Dissertations

Problem. Recruiting teachers and motivating them to stay in their jobs represents a major educational challenge in Norway. Growing demands and greater expectations on teachers are factors that have resulted in higher turnover and problems of filling vacancies.

Based on this background, the primary purpose of this study was to determine if job satisfaction is associated with organizational commitment among public and Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) teachers in Norway. The secondary purpose was to compare job satisfaction and organizational commitment between public and SDA teachers in Norway, and to establish linear combination based on the factors of job satisfaction that …

The Improv Church : A Qualitative, Theoretical, And Interdisciplinary Explanation Of Its Appeal To Collegians, Karl Haffner Jan 2004

The Improv Church : A Qualitative, Theoretical, And Interdisciplinary Explanation Of Its Appeal To Collegians, Karl Haffner

Dissertations

The college years often represent the time when young people drop out of church. The reasons vary. One of the factors in a decision to abandon church is that college students feel many traditional churches are irrelevant. Conventional methods of pedagogy and communication are typically used. The result is a learning environment that feels stale to many young people.

Some educators are experimenting with new methods of instruction based on advances in learning theories, instructional strategies, and in whole-person learning. The purpose of this study was to consider the Improv Church as a learning environment where these advances in education …

Faculty Perceptions Of Institutional Commitment To The Scholarship Of Engagement, Mackenzi Anne Huyser Jan 2004

Faculty Perceptions Of Institutional Commitment To The Scholarship Of Engagement, Mackenzi Anne Huyser

Dissertations

Problem. Institutions of higher education are in an important position in relation to fulfillment of their institutional mission. Boyer (1996) introduced to the higher education community an alternative approach to scholarship to address this shift from original mission. While Boyer (1990) examined institutions of higher education as a whole, the distinctive worldview, mission, and philosophy of reformed Christian institutions have not been examined to determine to what extent they are fulfilling their calling to transform creation and redeem culture. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine social perceptions that full-time faculty, serving in reformed institutions, hold about their …

How Instructional Leadership Is Addressed In Educational Administration/Leadership Programs, Lolethia Jones Kibble Jan 2004

How Instructional Leadership Is Addressed In Educational Administration/Leadership Programs, Lolethia Jones Kibble

Dissertations

Problem

Instructional leadership is a major factor in school effectiveness and student achievement, yet it is not widely practiced by school principals. One of the contributing factors, identified in the literature, is a lack of skills and knowledge. Although there is a great deal of information about principal preparation programs, there is very little information on the preparation of school leaders in the practice of instructional leadership behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine how instructional leadership is addressed in both traditional and restructured educational administration/leadership programs and to what extent this is related to institutional and demographic …

Transformistic Theory, Gill Robinson Hickman Jan 2004

Transformistic Theory, Gill Robinson Hickman

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Transformistic theory emerged in the 1970s in an effort to predict the kinds of organizations that would be most successful in uncertain or highly turbulent environments. This theory posits that in uncertain environments, organizations must generate transformation on multiple levels -- individual, organizational, and societal -- if they are to change in ways that will ensure both their own viability and the overall well-being of society.

Organizations Of Hope: Leading The Way To Transformation, Social Action, And Profitability, Gill Robinson Hickman Jan 2004

Organizations Of Hope: Leading The Way To Transformation, Social Action, And Profitability, Gill Robinson Hickman

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

In today's environment, organizations are expected to demonstrate responsibility and contribute to the collective good of society beyond their traditional role of job creation. I submit that an important social imperative for organizations in this era is to understand the interdependent nature of the environment in which they operate and purposely link their survival efforts to the survival and well-being of society.

Justice Thomas And Federal Indian Law: Hitting His Stride?, David E. Wilkins Jan 2004

Justice Thomas And Federal Indian Law: Hitting His Stride?, David E. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

It was Justice [Clarence Thomas], the lone African American, whose voting record on Indian cases is more anti-Indian than even Rehnquist or Scalia, who in his concurring opinion, made several critical points that were most telling. Thomas will never be mistaken for Thurgood Marshall, who wrote several affirmative Indian law rulings, and his intention in crafting his opinion in this case was almost certainly not meant to be transparently supportive of tribal sovereignty. Yet he identified several enigmas in law and policy that, if acted upon by tribal, state and federal policymakers, might lead to a clearer status for indigenous …

Young Cpas Remain Undaunted By Scandals, Heather M. Hermanson, Mary C. Hill, Susan H. Ivancevich

Faculty Articles

Did the demise of Arthur Andersen and the related fallout affect the satisfaction of entry-level accountants at Big Four firms? The answer appears to be "no." Despite the considerable negative press focused on the profession, entry-level accountants still assess positively the profession and their careers. The authors followed the careers of 32 new hires from the summer of 2000, assessing their job satisfaction every 6 months. Job satisfaction remained stable over the period just before and after the Andersen collapse. Despite the negative press, respondents indicated that their firm is operating much as it had in the past. The relatively …

Instructional Implications Of The Michigan Educational Assessment Program As An Accountability Instrument, Daniel J. Applegate Jan 2004

Instructional Implications Of The Michigan Educational Assessment Program As An Accountability Instrument, Daniel J. Applegate

Dissertations

Problem. In Michigan, early elementary school teachers are held accountable for instructional decisions they made based on the number of children who pass the state standardized reading test, the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP). Although state officials claim the MEAP can inform instruction, no data are regularly collected to describe reading instructional practices or the relationship between current practices and the percentage of students who pass the MEAP.

Method. Using a survey instrument, this study measured the amount of instructional time Kindergarten through Grade 4 teachers reported that they devoted to the development of 19 different components or activities within …

The Stairway To Heaven: A Critique Of The Evangelical Gospel Presentation In North America, Paul Brent Dybdahl Jan 2004

The Stairway To Heaven: A Critique Of The Evangelical Gospel Presentation In North America, Paul Brent Dybdahl

Dissertations

The topic . This study focuses on the so-called "plan of salvation" or "gospel presentation" that evangelical Christians in the United States present to seekers who want to know how to be saved. There are currently three dominant presentations that are widely employed and emulated. The authors of each are well-known: D. James Kennedy, Bill Bright, and Billy Graham.

The major portion of my study involves a two-stage critique of these dominant evangelical gospel presentations: first, from the perspective provided by communication theory, and second, by comparing the presentations of Kennedy, Bright, and Graham with conversion accounts from Luke-Acts. Essentially, …

Popular Culture As A Lens On Legal Professionalism, Alex Scherr, Hillary Farber Jan 2004

Popular Culture As A Lens On Legal Professionalism, Alex Scherr, Hillary Farber

Scholarly Works

Why use art to teach lawyering?' Despite divergences in method and intention, the two disciplines overlap. If the prevalence of lawyers in movies, television, literature, and even humor means anything, popular culture remains fascinated with lawyers. Our practices, our ethics, and our professional personae serve as a mine for image and narrative, a target for cultural critique, and a catalyst for expression. Not surprisingly, images of lawyers in cartoons, film, television, and literature offer unique opportunities to teach and explore professionalism. The proliferation of lawyer images in popular culture provides an array of material ranging from career choice to particular …

An End Of Term Exam: Ot 2003 At The United States Supreme Court, Peter B. Rutledge, Nicole L. Angarella

Scholarly Works

This Essay proceeds in two parts. The first part provides the broad overview of October Term 2003. It analyzes current statistics in the size and composition of the Court's caseload and compares those figures to past terms. It also considers the justices' voting patterns and which justices proved to be the "swing" votes, both generally and in particular fields. The second part focuses on the key cases of the Term. It addresses both what the Court decided and what it failed to decide. It critiques those decisions and considers their implications for future doctrinal developments. The Court Consensus offers some …

Litigation Expenses And The Alternative Minimum Tax, Gregg D. Polsky, Brant J. Hellwig Jan 2004

Litigation Expenses And The Alternative Minimum Tax, Gregg D. Polsky, Brant J. Hellwig

Scholarly Works

One of the chief features of the alternative minimum tax (the "AMT") is a broadened tax base, accomplished in part through the disallowance of deductions that are not central to measuring an individual's net income. Yet in achieving its objective of limiting deductions, the AMT casts a wide net. Thus, in certain instances, an individual can be robbed of the tax benefit of expenses that were critical to the production of the income being taxed. An extreme example of this problem is the treatment of certain litigation expenses under the AMT. If an individual incurs attorney fees and other associated …

If The Shoe Fits: Kasky V. Nike And Whether Corporate Statements About Business Operations Should Be Deemed Commercial Speech, Jason A. Cade Jan 2004

If The Shoe Fits: Kasky V. Nike And Whether Corporate Statements About Business Operations Should Be Deemed Commercial Speech, Jason A. Cade

Scholarly Works

This Note argues that the Kasky court was correct to recognize that today's commercial speech encompasses communications beyond traditional advertisements about products or services. Corporations are aware that a sizeable number of consumers rely on their statements about their business operations when making investment and purchasing decisions. In order to ensure the accuracy of these statements, and thereby protect the integrity of the market, this speech is properly considered commercial speech.
