Networking Is Not Everything: The Factors That Led To The Eventual Decline Of The Brigate Rosse, Courtney Janos Geraci

Honors Theses

This thesis concerns the Brigate Rosse, an Italian terrorist organization that was active from the late-1960s to the mid-1980s, the networks through which the Brigate Rosse chose to work, how these networks helped/hindered the success of the Brigate Rosse, and how the murder of Aldo Moro marked the turning point in the BR s success. To gather data, T looked at primary sources, such as communications that were sent by the BR and government documents, as well as secondary sources which examined the actions of the Brigate Rosse, the networks they maintained, and the social and political circumstances of Italy …

Battling From The Bottom Up: The Alleviation Of Violence Against Women By The Non-Governmental Sector In South Africa, Shane Julia Richardson

Honors Theses

This thesis seeks to examine the work of the Non-Governmental sector in alleviating violence against women in South Africa. The first chapter analyzes VAW in two time periods—1948-1994 and the post-Apartheid era, 1994-2002. The second chapter provides an overview of the roles and methodology of NGOs in post-Apartheid South Africa and presents a list of strategies that an effective NGO must employ. Finally, Chapter 3 is a case study of POWA (People Opposing Women Abuse), a Johannesburg-based VAW NGO. The case study uses the strategies and typology laid out in Chapter 2 to evaluate the work of POWA. The researcher …

The Daughter’S Struggle For Definition Both With And Against The Mother In Achieving Selfhood In Five Contemporary American Novels, Camille Leigh Comer Jan 2004

The Daughter’S Struggle For Definition Both With And Against The Mother In Achieving Selfhood In Five Contemporary American Novels, Camille Leigh Comer

Honors Theses

The following thesis analyzes the mother-daughter relationships in Rebecca Wells’ Little Altars Everywhere and Divine Secrets of the Ya~Ya Sisterhood, Janet Fitch’s White Oleander and Sue Monk Kidd’s The Secret Life of Bees. Attempting to illustrate the central significance of relations between mothers and daughters in everyday life, I chose the four novels based on their recent popularity in mainstream society. For instance, both Divine Secrets and White Oleander have been made into films within the past few years. In gathering data for my thesis, I focused on information explaining why the relationships between mothers and daughters are especially potent …

The Use Of Dna Microarrays To Compare The Gene Expression Profiles Of Paclitaxel And Acetic Acid 2,2'-Thiobis, Bis [[(2-Hydroxyphynyl) Methylene]Hydrazid] In A549 Cells: Part 1, Jennifer Diane Ellzey Jan 2004

The Use Of Dna Microarrays To Compare The Gene Expression Profiles Of Paclitaxel And Acetic Acid 2,2'-Thiobis, Bis [[(2-Hydroxyphynyl) Methylene]Hydrazid] In A549 Cells: Part 1, Jennifer Diane Ellzey

Honors Theses

There are several classes of anticancer drugs, including the antimicrotubule drugs, which halt mitosis by interfering with the activity of microtubules, the cylindrical protein polymers that play a role in segregating chromosomes during mitosis. While most antimicrotubule drugs act by destabilizing the microtubule polymer and reducing microtubule assembly, paclitaxel, a drug first isolated from the bark of Taxus brevefolia, halts mitosis by stabilizing microtubules, thus interfering with the dynamics of polymerization and depolymerization that are crucial to their function. In light of the mounting resistance to paclitaxel, it is more important than ever to discover new drugs with a similar …

European Lingua Franca? Germany's Relationship With English In The Late Twentieth Century, Anna Elise Fleming Jan 2004

European Lingua Franca? Germany's Relationship With English In The Late Twentieth Century, Anna Elise Fleming

Honors Theses

The following thesis analyses the maintenance of national education, business, and social infrastructures (such as popular media and advertisement) for the English language within German borders. This linguistic situation in Germany, combined with the pressure of English as a global language, signifies the possibility of English becoming the lingua franca (common language) for Europe (both European Union and non-European Union countries), especially in the areas of higher education, business, and media.

A Number Theoretical Approach To Public Key Cryptography, Nathan Morley Holt Jan 2004

A Number Theoretical Approach To Public Key Cryptography, Nathan Morley Holt

Honors Theses

My journey with design cannot be adequately studied without a deeper understanding of my passion for freedom. Through this paper, my use of the word “freedom ’ represents breaking free from bondage. Poverty is bondage. Homelessness is bondage. Slavery is bondage. Radically, I also choose to consider apathy a bondage. During my time at The University of Mississippi, one of the ways I have grown as a graphic artist is through my pursuit to make a difference. Pairing artistic techniques with help others, I have discovered design’s unique ability to initiate action. Speaking louder than words, design can convey messages …

The Role Of Initial Teacher Education In The Development Of Interculturalism In Irish Primary Education, O'Riordan Joe

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper examines how the views of teacher education students in a College of Education in South Weste01 Ireland have developed during their three-year programme. The survey took place in May 2003 and examined first year and third (final) year students in the Bachelor of Education programme. The survey examines the personal and professional beliefs of the students and analyses the difference in scores. The paper then moves on to look at various aspects of how teacher education can affect the appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes of intercultural issues as they relate to the education of all students

Fabrication Or Induction Of Illness In A Child: A Critical Review Of Labels And Literature Using Electronic Libraries, Kenneth Burns Jan 2004

Fabrication Or Induction Of Illness In A Child: A Critical Review Of Labels And Literature Using Electronic Libraries, Kenneth Burns

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper argues that the variance between professionals on the use of terminology to describe and define this form of child maltreatment may lead to a loss of focus on children's welfare. The author argues that the label Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy has outlived its use and recommends the adoption of a new label 'Fabrication or Induction of Illness in a Child'. The article presents a critical analysis of the titles of 41 0 unique library entries collated from electronic libraries to discern the prevalence of labels to denote the fabrication or induction of illness in children. The article also …

Assessment Of Obesity And Fear Of Fatness Among Inner-City Dublin Schoolchildren In A One-Year-Follow-Up Study, Anne Griffin, Katherine Younger, Mary Flynn Jan 2004

Assessment Of Obesity And Fear Of Fatness Among Inner-City Dublin Schoolchildren In A One-Year-Follow-Up Study, Anne Griffin, Katherine Younger, Mary Flynn

Articles

Background: Positive secular trends in adolescent obesity and an increased prevalence of fear of fatness, particularly among girls, have been documented world-wide. There is a lack of consensus about assessment criteria for childhood obesity and no standard exists for assessing Irish children. In 1990, the Irish National Nutrition Survey used body mass index (BMI) $26 kgm22 to describe the prevalence of overweight among Irish adolescents.

Objectives: (1) To examine the range in classification of Dublin schoolchildren as overweight according to four standard assessment methods; (2) to assess changes in weight status, prevalence of fear of fatness and accompanying slimming practices …

Misrepresentation By Lawyers About Credentials Or Experience, Vincent R. Johnson, Shawn M. Lovorn Jan 2004

Misrepresentation By Lawyers About Credentials Or Experience, Vincent R. Johnson, Shawn M. Lovorn

Faculty Articles

Authorities appropriately condemn dishonesty by attorneys in the broadest terms. In moving from moral principles to legal liability, however, it is important to think carefully about when a lawyer’s conduct misleads a client in a way that is actionable. Whether liability will be imposed depends upon the nature of the misrepresentation, the status of the plaintiff, the theory of liability, and the presence of competing interests or special considerations.

Basic principles of American tort law provide useful guidance in defining the disclosure obligations of attorneys. But like tort law itself, the answers are not simple. What an attorney may, must, …

Status And Tenure For Academic Law Librarians: A Survey, Robert H. Hu, Sharon Blackburn, Masako Patrum, Sharon K. Scott Jan 2004

Status And Tenure For Academic Law Librarians: A Survey, Robert H. Hu, Sharon Blackburn, Masako Patrum, Sharon K. Scott

Faculty Articles

The debate surrounding the issue of faculty and academic status for librarians has captured the attention of contributors to library literature for many years. This ongoing concern eventually led to collective action: in 1959, a report of the University Libraries Section of the Academic Status Committee of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) “strongly recommended” professional librarians be granted academic status and privileges. Opinion pieces have since abounded, with some convinced that the perceived benefits attached to “faculty status” are the due of the librarian, while others are just as strongly convinced that “status” too often comes with …

Maternity Rights In Mexico: With References To The Spanish And American Codes, Roberto Rosas Jan 2004

Maternity Rights In Mexico: With References To The Spanish And American Codes, Roberto Rosas

Faculty Articles

Mexico, the United States, and Spain approach maternity rights and benefits from differing perspectives within diverse legal frameworks. Maternity and pregnancy deserve legal protection in the workplace by virtue of their vital role to society. Women worldwide share a concern for maternity rights and benefits, but countries approach legal rights related to motherhood and pregnancy from differing perspectives.

The laws in Mexico and Spain regarding maternity share many similarities, including protecting not only the mother and fetus, but also the infant and father. In contrast, the laws in the United States solely protect the mother and unborn fetus. The laws …

Thermodynamic Consequences Of Dna Base Modifications And Ligand-Dna Interactions., Rachel Hutchins Graves Jan 2004

Thermodynamic Consequences Of Dna Base Modifications And Ligand-Dna Interactions., Rachel Hutchins Graves

All ETDs from UAB

The thermodynamic effects of alterations of the DNA duplex by DNA base modifications or ligand binding are investigated by a combination of spectrophotometric and calorimetric methods. Examination of the effects of substituent modification on the DNA binding energetics of the anticancer agent AAC (Y-[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]-9-aminoacridine-4-carboxamide) indicated that DNA binding affinities and energetics were enhanced upon substitution at the C5 position on the chromophore of the drug with a variety of chemical groups. A correlation between enthalpies of DNA binding and anticancer activity was evident. The impacts of DNA base modifications, including cytosine arabinoside, deaminated cytosine, and abasic sites, on the thermodynamics of …

The Association Of Maternal Mobility History And Birth Outcomes Among Singleton Infants Born To United States Resident Mothers Of Mexican Origin, 1995-1999, Martha Slay Wingate Jan 2004

The Association Of Maternal Mobility History And Birth Outcomes Among Singleton Infants Born To United States Resident Mothers Of Mexican Origin, 1995-1999, Martha Slay Wingate

All ETDs from UAB

Various studies have observed that infants born to foreign-born women have better birth outcomes (lower rates of preterm, low birth weight, and infant mortality) than those delivered to U.S.-born women. Much attention has been given to the “healthy migrant effect” but no studies have examined this theory in an internally migrant population. The study purpose is to examine the association of maternal mobility history and birth outcomes among infants delivered in the U.S. while considering the influences of geographic location and socio-cultural composition, barriers that might make less healthy individuals less likely to migrate. Maternal mobility history (MMH), which refers …
