Confidence Intervals On Subsets May Be Misleading, Juliet Popper Shaffer Nov 2004

Confidence Intervals On Subsets May Be Misleading, Juliet Popper Shaffer

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A combination of hypothesis testing and confidence interval construction is often used in social and behavioral science studies. Sometimes confidence intervals are computed or reported only if a null hypothesis is rejected, perhaps to see whether the range of values is of practical importance. Sometimes they are constructed or reported only if a null hypothesis is accepted, in order to assess the range of plausible nonnull values due to inadequate power to detect them. Even if always computed, they are interpreted differently, depending on whether the null value is or is not included. Furthermore, many studies in which the null …

A Modification Of The Em Algorithm To Estimate An Andersen-Gill Gamma Frailty Model For Multivariate Failure Time Data, Maria Antònia Barceló, Marc Saez Nov 2004

A Modification Of The Em Algorithm To Estimate An Andersen-Gill Gamma Frailty Model For Multivariate Failure Time Data, Maria Antònia Barceló, Marc Saez

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A modification of the Andersen-Gill gamma shared frailty model is presented. The variance of the frailty is directly modeled by means of a generalized linear model, the EM algorithm is modified in order to simultaneously estimate a semiparametric model for the failure times and a model for the variance of the frailty. A simulation study is conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm (EMB algorithm) and compared with other methods, a marginal model, and a conditional model. Multivariate data from a nosocomial infection study is used to illustrate the methods. The EMB fit turned out to be better …

Theoretical Study Of The Magnetic Ordering In Rare-Earth Compounds With Face-Centered-Cubic Structure, Chun-Gang Duan, Renat F. Sabirianov, Jianjun Liu, Wai-Ning Mei, Peter A. Dowben, John R. Hardy Nov 2004

Theoretical Study Of The Magnetic Ordering In Rare-Earth Compounds With Face-Centered-Cubic Structure, Chun-Gang Duan, Renat F. Sabirianov, Jianjun Liu, Wai-Ning Mei, Peter A. Dowben, John R. Hardy

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a detailed theoretical study of the magnetic ordering in heavy rare-earth compounds with a face-centered-cubic structure. In addition to the exchange interactions which are counted up to the third nearest neighbors, the effect of the dipolar interactions and magnetic anisotropic effect are also included in our model Hamiltonian. The interactions parameters are obtained from first-principles band-structure calculations by fitting the total energies of different magnetic configurations to the Heisenberg Model. Thus from utilizing the Monte Carlo simulations, we explained the formation of different magnetic structures in the rare-earth compounds.

Costs And Benefits Of Strategic Acquisition Of Limited Access Right-Of-Way At Freeway Interchange Areas, Kristine M. Williams, Huaguo Zhou, Larry Hagen Nov 2004

Costs And Benefits Of Strategic Acquisition Of Limited Access Right-Of-Way At Freeway Interchange Areas, Kristine M. Williams, Huaguo Zhou, Larry Hagen

Transportation Planning, Policy, and Processes (TP3) Final Reports

The purpose of this research is to assess the cost effectiveness of purchasing additional limited access rightof- way at the time of construction in lieu of retrofitting interchange areas after functional failure. The findings indicate that the long term safety, operational, and fiscal benefits of purchasing additional limited access ROW at interchange areas, significantly exceed the initial up-front right-of-way costs. This is particularly true for new interchanges in areas where land has not yet been extensively subdivided and developed. Additional research is suggested to further refine and expand upon the results. Nonetheless, the magnitude of these results suggests that state …

A Tail-Recursive Machine With Stack Inspection, John Clements, Mathias Felleisen Nov 2004

A Tail-Recursive Machine With Stack Inspection, John Clements, Mathias Felleisen

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Security folklore holds that a security mechanism based on stack inspection is incompatible with a global tail call optimization policy; that an implementation of such a language must allocate memory for a source-code tail call, and a program that uses only tail calls (and no other memory allocating construct) may nevertheless exhaust the available memory. In this article, we prove this widely held belief wrong. We exhibit an abstract machine for a language with security stack inspection whose space consumption function is equivalent to that of the canonical tail call optimizing abstract machine. Our machine is surprisingly simple and suggests that …

Human Fetal, Cord Blood, And Adult Lymphocyte Progenitors Have Similar Potential For Generating B Cells With A Diverse Immunoglobulin Repertoire, Grant R. Kolar, Takafumi Yokota, Maria Isabel D. Rossi, Swapan K. Nath, J. Donald Capra Nov 2004

Human Fetal, Cord Blood, And Adult Lymphocyte Progenitors Have Similar Potential For Generating B Cells With A Diverse Immunoglobulin Repertoire, Grant R. Kolar, Takafumi Yokota, Maria Isabel D. Rossi, Swapan K. Nath, J. Donald Capra

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Several characteristics of the immunoglobulin (Ig) repertoire in fetuses and adults set them apart from each other. Functionally, this translates into differences in the affinity and effectiveness of the humoral immune response between adults and the very young. At least 2 possibilities could explain these differences: (1) fetal and adult lymphocyte progenitors differ significantly in their potential to form a diverse repertoire, and (2) factors extrinsic to the immunoglobulin locus are more influential to the character of the repertoire. To address this, we used nonobese diabetic-severe combined immunodeficient- β2 microglobulin knockout (NOD/SCID/β2m -/-) mice reconstituted with human B-cell progenitors …

Sex Differences In Metabolic Rates In Field Crickets And Their Dipteran Parasitoids, Gita R. Kolluru, Mark A. Chappell, Marlene Zuk Nov 2004

Sex Differences In Metabolic Rates In Field Crickets And Their Dipteran Parasitoids, Gita R. Kolluru, Mark A. Chappell, Marlene Zuk

Biological Sciences

Sex differences in metabolic rate (MR) can result from dimorphism in the performance of energetically demanding activities. Male crickets (Teleogryllus oceanicus) engage in costly calling and aggressive activity not performed by females. Consistent with this difference, we found higher maximal MR, factorial scope, and fat content in males than females. T. oceanicus song is also costly because it attracts the parasitoid fly Ormia ochracea. Parasitized crickets had reduced maximal MR consistent with a metabolic cost to harboring larvae. This cost was greater for females, either because females invest more heavily into reproduction at the expense of metabolic …

Application Of Genotypic And Phenotypic Analyses To Commerical Probiotic Strain Identity And Relatedness, P.S.M. Yeung, C. L. Kitts, R. Cano, P. Tong

Biological Sciences

Aims: The objective of this study was to generate strain-specific genomic patterns of a bank of 67 commercial and reference probiotic strains, with a focus on probiotic lactobacilli.

Methods and Results: Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used as the primary method for strain differentiation. This method was compared with carbohydrate fermentation analysis. To supplement visual comparison, PFGE patterns were analysed quantitatively by cluster analysis using unweighted pair group method with arithmetic averages. SmaI, NotI and XbaI were found to effectively generate clear and easy-to-interpret PFGE patterns of a range of probiotic strains. Some probiotic strains from different sources …

Improvement Of Parameter Estimation For Non-Linear Hysteretic Systems With Slip By A Fast Bayesian Bootstrap Filter, S. J. Li, Yoshiyuki Suzuki, Mohammad N. Noori Nov 2004

Improvement Of Parameter Estimation For Non-Linear Hysteretic Systems With Slip By A Fast Bayesian Bootstrap Filter, S. J. Li, Yoshiyuki Suzuki, Mohammad N. Noori

Office of the Dean (CENG) Scholarship

Modeling and identification of non-linear hysteretic systems are widely encountered in the structural dynamics field, especially for the hysteresis with slip. A model, called SL model, which can describe the pinching of most practical hysteresis loops perfectly was proposed by Baber and Noori (J. Eng. Mech. 111 (1985) 1010). A method of estimating the parameters of SL model on the basis of input–output data based on bootstrap filter was proposed by the writers. Bootstrap filter is a filtering method based on Bayesian state estimation and Monte Carlo method, which has the great advantage of being able to handle any functional …

Balanced Word Pairs, Darryl Francis Nov 2004

Balanced Word Pairs, Darryl Francis

Word Ways

Given the 26 letters in the alphabet, the midpoint lies between the 13th and 14th letters, M and N, Imagine a process which can take a word and each of its letters and transform the words into a different string of letters, such that the letter A is changed to a Z, the letter B is changed to a Y, a C to an X, and so on, with M being changed to an N. Here, the midpoint of the alphabet acts like the fulcrum of balance, with the original word and the transformed string of letters pivoted equally. As …
