Occupational Risk: The Outrageous Reaction To Hiv Positive Public Safety And Health Care Employees In The Workplace, Manju Gupta Jan 2004

Occupational Risk: The Outrageous Reaction To Hiv Positive Public Safety And Health Care Employees In The Workplace, Manju Gupta

Journal of Law and Health

Society, including the legal profession, fears the risk of transmission of HIV in an occupational setting. This is particularly true for those in the health care and public safety settings (fire fighters, police, and healthcare practitioners). This note will assert that the law should afford HIV infected public safety and healthcare employees the right to continue in their occupations. According to current medical evidence, when public safety and healthcare employees use universal precautions the risk of transmission to a person(s) assisted is insignificant. At the beginning of the epidemic, the medical profession had yet to conduct research, and the risks …

Cross Burning Revisited: What The Supreme Court Should Have Done In Virginia V. Black And Why It Didn’T, W. Wat Hopkins Jan 2004

Cross Burning Revisited: What The Supreme Court Should Have Done In Virginia V. Black And Why It Didn’T, W. Wat Hopkins

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The Supreme Court of the United States, in R.A. V. v. St. Paul, created a complicated framework of law that, despite years of case law to the contrary, would allow a court to hold a law banning cross burning to be constitutional, even if the law was not content-neutral. The ruling caused considerable problems in cases involving cross burning that reached lower appellate courts. In Virginia v. Black, the Court had the opportunity to resolve the problem, but refused to do so. Instead, the Court restructured the law related to intimidating and threatening speech, creating even more ambiguity. Under the …

Stress Corrosion Cracking And Hydrogen Embrittlement Of Martensitic Alloy Ep -823, Mohammad Kamal Hossain Jan 2004

Stress Corrosion Cracking And Hydrogen Embrittlement Of Martensitic Alloy Ep -823, Mohammad Kamal Hossain

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This investigation is focused on the evaluation of stress corrosion cracking (SCC), localized corrosion, and hydrogen embrittlement (HE) susceptibility of martensitic Alloy EP-823 in neutral and acidic solutions at ambient and elevated temperatures. While no failures were observed in smooth specimens in the neutral solution, failures were noticed in the 90°C acidic solution at constant-load (CL) leading to a threshold stress (sigmath) of 102 ksi. The presence of a notch reduced the sigmath value to 91 ksi in a similar environment. The ductility (%El and %RA), time-to-failure (TTF), and true failure stress (sigmaf) were gradually reduced in both environments with …
