The Cognitive And Affective Antecedents Of General Trust Within Cooperative Organizations, J.L. Morrow Jr., Mark H. Hansen, Allison W. Pearson

Faculty Publications

Recently, much attention has been devoted to the important role that trust may play in the management of organizations. From a theoretical perspective, scholars have considered a wide range of topics such as the distinction between trust and distrust (Lewicki et al, 1998), the initial development and evolution of trust within organizations (Jones and George, 1998; Mayer et aL, 1995) and the betrayal of trust (Elangovan and Shapiro, 1998). EmpiricaJJy, researchers have examined how trust impacts organizations at the individual (McAllister, 1995), group (Korsgaard et al, 1995) and organizational levels (Davis fl al., 2000). Visual Expectations: Using Machine Learning To Identify Patterns In Psychological Data, Skyler Place Jan 2004

Visual Expectations: Using Machine Learning To Identify Patterns In Psychological Data, Skyler Place

Honors Theses

The goal of this project was to utilize the tools of machine learning to evaluate the data obtained through experiments in psychology. Advanced pattern finding algorithms are an effective approach to analyzing large sets of data, from any domain of science. Consequently, we have a psychological question and hypothesis, and a separate machine learning technique to assess these claims. The realm of psychology that I focused on is visual cognition, and how an individual's knowledge affects how they see the world. This alteration of visual data is a part of perception -when the brain enhances the data coming in from …

Memory For Emotional And Nonemotional Events In Depression: A Question Of Habit?, Paula T. Hertel

Psychology Faculty Research

The truest claim that cognitive science can make might also be the least sophisticated: the mind tends to do what it has done before. In previous centuries philosophers and psychologists invented constructs such as associations, habit strength, and connectivity to formalize the truism, but others have known about it, too. In small towns in the Ozarks, for example, grandmothers have been overheard doling out warnings such as, "Don't think those ugly thoughts; your mind will freeze that way." Depressed persons, like most of us, usually don't heed this advice. The thoughts frozen in their minds might not be "ugly," but …

Contracting With Tortfeasors: Mandatory Arbitration Clauses And Personal Injury Claims, Elizabeth G. Thornburg Jan 2004

Contracting With Tortfeasors: Mandatory Arbitration Clauses And Personal Injury Claims, Elizabeth G. Thornburg

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

People thinking about contractual arbitration clauses usually envision the resulting disputes as contractual in nature. However, there is also a group of cases in which the clauses are used to compel arbitration of personal injury claims. This article examines those cases, including the impact of the Federal Arbitration Act on their enforcement. Next, the article considers the ways in which these pre-dispute, mandatory arbitration clauses can disturb the traditional values of procedural justice, contractual fairness, and the enforcement of tort-based duties. Finally, the article proposes changes in the law of arbitration and evaluates whether such changes are politically feasible.

From Cannibalism To Empowerment: An Analects-Inspired Attempt To Balance Community And Liberty, Sor-Hoon Tan Jan 2004

From Cannibalism To Empowerment: An Analects-Inspired Attempt To Balance Community And Liberty, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The Confucian tradition has often been credited with a strong allegiance to the value of community. It recognizes that certain goods might be attained through special forms of human association, but not by any solitary individual. Are such community goods attained at the expense of the liberty of individual members? Philosophers have struggled with the tension between liberty and community since the dawn of Western philosophy. Aristotle complained about the false idea of liberty as "doing what one likes," which is contradictory to the true interests of the polis.2 Such lib- erty, or rather license, is undoubtedly detrimental to any …
