Thinking Beyond Health To Motivate Dietary Change: Piloting A Vegan Healthy Eating Program For Obesity Management, Mark Alan Berman Jan 2004

Thinking Beyond Health To Motivate Dietary Change: Piloting A Vegan Healthy Eating Program For Obesity Management, Mark Alan Berman

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This pilot study assessed the feasibility, acceptability and efficacy of a novel approach to facilitating dietary change and weight loss in obese adults by presenting vegan environmental, health and farm animal treatment information in a 6 week, group-based, educational nutrition program (called a vegan healthy eating program). Twenty-nine (29) medically stable, obese adults were recruited from 3 ambulatory care clinics at UCSF and enrolled using partial randomization into one of two serially occurring intervention groups (Group 1 n=14, followed by Group 2 n=15). A delayed intervention control group (n=9) was used, consisting of participants enrolled in Group 2 who were …

Alcohol And Injury: An Analysis Of At Risk Drinkers Presenting To The Yale-New Haven Hospital Emergency Room, Hilary Furste Ryder

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Compared with the population at-large, the Emergency Department (ED) population sees a high percentage of people with alcohol use and abuse problems. Therefore, the ED is well suited for the implementation of alcohol screening and interventions. It is important to be able to identify at risk drinkers who come to the ED for treatment for injury or other medical problems so that interventions may occur. Project ED Health conducted intensive interviews with harmful and hazardous drinkers presenting to the ED for treatment of injury or medical problem. The data was entered into a database and analyzed to find differences between …

Not All Stereotypic Biases Are Created Equal: Evidence For A Stereotype-Disconfirming Bias, Na Wyer Jan 2004

Not All Stereotypic Biases Are Created Equal: Evidence For A Stereotype-Disconfirming Bias, Na Wyer

School of Psychology

Stereotype-confirming biases are well documented in the social psychological literature. However, motivations to disconfirm social stereotypes may be more influential for unprejudiced individuals. Three experiments are presented that test the hypothesis that extremely unprejudiced people exhibit a bias toward stereotype disconfirmation. Experiment 1 investigates stereotype disconfirmation in information-seeking preferences. Experiments 2 and 3 explore attributional strategies for stereotype disconfirmation. In all experiments, unprejudiced participants respond in ways reflecting a motivation to disconfirm social stereotypes. Implications for stereotype change and stereotypic influences on judgment and behavior are discussed.

Racial Differences In The Mental Health Needs And Service Utilization Of Youth In The Juvenile Justice System, Mike Jenuwine Jan 2004

Racial Differences In The Mental Health Needs And Service Utilization Of Youth In The Juvenile Justice System, Mike Jenuwine

Journal Articles

Mental health placement rates by the juvenile justice system differ by race. However, it is unknown whether mental health needs differ by race. This study attempted to investigate potential differences in mental health needs and service utilization among Caucasian, African American, and Hispanic juvenile justice involved youth. A stratified random sample of 473 youth petitioned, adjudicated, and incarcerated from 1995-1996 was examined using a standard chart review protocol and the Childhood Severity of Psychiatric Illness measure for mental health needs. Significant and unique mental health needs were demonstrated for all racial groups. African American youth demonstrated the greatest level of …

The Legal Case Against The Global War On Terror, Mary Ellen O'Connell Jan 2004

The Legal Case Against The Global War On Terror, Mary Ellen O'Connell

Journal Articles

In the first confusing days after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, President George W. Bush declared a war on terror. Many of us heard this declaration as stirring rhetoric to rally the nation. We understood it as a declaration that the President would direct a strong response against those responsible. We had heard this sort of rhetoric before when the nation faced powerful challenges-from illegal drugs and chronic poverty. Many of us understood President Bush's declaration of war to refer once again to the determined, persistent struggle to overcome a social blight-this time terrorism. We did …

Solving The Nuisance-Value Settlement Problem: Manadatory Summary Judgment, David Rosenberg, Randy J. Kozel Jan 2004

Solving The Nuisance-Value Settlement Problem: Manadatory Summary Judgment, David Rosenberg, Randy J. Kozel

Journal Articles

The nuisance-value settlement problem arises whenever a litigant can profitably initiate a meritless claim or defense and offer to settle it for less than it would cost the opposing litigant to have a court dismiss the claim or defense on a standard motion for merits review like summary judgment. The opposing litigant confronted with such a nuisance-value claim or defense rationally would agree to settle for any amount up to the cost of litigating to have it dismissed. These settlement payoffs skew litigation outcomes away from socially appropriate levels, undermining the deterrence and compensation objectives of civil liability. Yet current …

Structural Bias And The Need For Substantive Review, Julian Velasco Jan 2004

Structural Bias And The Need For Substantive Review, Julian Velasco

Journal Articles

One of the fundamental debates in corporate law pits the authority of the board of directors to make business decisions without judicial interference against the accountability of directors to shareholders for their decisions. The business judgment rule attests to the value ascribed to authority by providing only limited judicial review for claims of breach of the duty of care, while the entire fairness test demonstrates the value ascribed to accountability by providing far more exacting scrutiny for claims of breach of the duty of loyalty. In cases involving structural bias, however, neither doctrine is appropriate. Whenever the interests of directors …

Misusing International Sources To Interpret The Constituion, Roger P. Alford Jan 2004

Misusing International Sources To Interpret The Constituion, Roger P. Alford

Journal Articles

This article addresses the trend toward using international sources to interpret the Constitution. While recognizing that international sources may be appropriately used as persuasive authority in certain types of constitutional analysis, this article argues that such reliance is inappropriate if done improperly. There are four misuses of international sources that serve as the focus of the article.

The first misuse of international sources - particularly evident in death penalty litigation - occurs when the global opinions of humankind are ascribed constitutional value to thwart the domestic opinions of Americans. The article suggests that international norms cannot be internalized within our …

The Role Of Socioeconomics In Teaching Family Law, Margaret F. Brinig Jan 2004

The Role Of Socioeconomics In Teaching Family Law, Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

Applying knowledge from other social sciences makes particular sense with the law and economics of the family. Much of the behavior we see and experience within families is difficult to see or understand as economically rational, that is, narrowly self-interested. Many of the legal changes we make that appear to be rational, at least from a cost-benefit perspective, turn out to be unsatisfying or even counterproductive. Though economists tend to view motivations or "utility functions" based upon "revealed preference," extended models like that of socioeconomics go below what is revealed to measure, as best we can, people's attitudes and feelings …

Probation Restrictions Impacting The Right To Procreate: The Oakley Error, Jennifer L. Levi Jan 2004

Probation Restrictions Impacting The Right To Procreate: The Oakley Error, Jennifer L. Levi

Faculty Scholarship

In State v. Oakley, the all-male four-justice majority held that a probation condition restricting David Oakley's right to have children passed constitutional muster. This Article discusses this question of the appropriate approach to evaluating the constitutionality of probation conditions. The Wisconsin Supreme Court's approach is compared to that of other courts in cases involving, in some way, decisions limiting a probationer's right to have children. The Author concludes that regardless of what constitutional standard or degree of scrutiny courts apply, cases can (and do) go both ways with respect to upholding or striking down probation restrictions on fundamental rights. However, …

The Family And Medical Leave Act Of 1993: Ten Years Of Experience: Introduction, Pauline Kim Jan 2004

The Family And Medical Leave Act Of 1993: Ten Years Of Experience: Introduction, Pauline Kim

Scholarship@WashULaw

On February 5, 1993, in a Rose Garden ceremony, President Bill Clinton signed the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) into law, declaring that workers “will no longer need to choose between the job they need and the family they love.”1 The signing ceremony was significant for a number of reasons. It marked an early legislative victory for a new administration, signaling its commitment to ending gridlock in Washington. It also symbolized changing priorities: earlier versions of the legislation had twice been enacted by Congress and then vetoed by President George H.W. Bush. With its focus on the needs of …

The Appropriation Of The Prospect Of Taking Medication For Psychological Complaints: An Empirical-Phenomenological Investigation, Daniel R. Mangine Jan 2004

The Appropriation Of The Prospect Of Taking Medication For Psychological Complaints: An Empirical-Phenomenological Investigation, Daniel R. Mangine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to describe the lived experience of being confronted with the prospect of taking medications for a psychological complaint, namely a depressive disorder. Descriptions of such experiences were obtained from adult participants and were analyzed qualitatively in order to explicate the themes and meanings that were most significant to forming the experience as such.

The findings of this study were dialogued with literature on medication taking, the doctor-patient relationship, dialogic psychology and the construction of the self, and theories of willing, motivation and identity. This analysis contributes to the current literature by illuminating the lived …
