The Needs Of The Adult Learner : Typical Characteristics And How It Impacts The Training Process, Joleen W. Siebert
The Needs Of The Adult Learner : Typical Characteristics And How It Impacts The Training Process, Joleen W. Siebert
Graduate Research Papers
This literature review was conducted to gain a better understanding of the relationship between the characteristics of the adult learner, and the impact of those characteristics in implementation and training situations in a business environment. The review introduced this researcher to numerous theories, resources, and strategies proven to improve business training activities or programs.
The amount of available research provides evidence that business recognizes quality training must be provided to derive optimum results from training programs for their employees. It also confirms that understanding typical adult learner characteristics will enhance the learning situation when both the course designers and the …
Retrospective Miscue Analysis : A Positive Approach, Lisa Marlene Wright
Retrospective Miscue Analysis : A Positive Approach, Lisa Marlene Wright
Graduate Research Papers
Retrospective Miscue Analysis (RMA) is an assessment and instructional tool that can be used in strengthening reading strategies, comprehension development, and positive reader self-concept. This paper discusses RMA's theoretical background and ways it empowers teachers and students, raises reader self-esteem, and teaches reading strategies such as self-correcting, re-reading and listening for syntactical and semantic cues. Next, I discuss the RMA process, which includes recording the reading session, producing a type script with all of the participants' miscues, as well as a separate script that has only the miscues to be discussed with the reader, marking the miscue analysis sheet, recording …
Content Analysis Of The Changing Roles Of Female Protagonists In Girls Series Novels Written After The Women's Movement, Tina Kathryn Ristau
Content Analysis Of The Changing Roles Of Female Protagonists In Girls Series Novels Written After The Women's Movement, Tina Kathryn Ristau
Graduate Research Papers
While series novels have been popular for many years, the actual roles of females have changed through time. Series novels written in recent years may not reflect the changes women's roles have undergone. Nancy Drew acted as one of the first female protagonists in girls' series novels and provided an intelligent, independent role model for young girls. Series novels written after the Women's Movement in the 1980s and 1990s may not reflect the changing role of women in society.
While researching this problem a content analysis form was used to evaluate five series novels each, from five different girls series. …
The African System On Human And Peoples' Rights, Quasi-Constructivism, And The Possibility Of Peacebuilding Within African States, Obiora Chinedu Okafor
The African System On Human And Peoples' Rights, Quasi-Constructivism, And The Possibility Of Peacebuilding Within African States, Obiora Chinedu Okafor
Articles & Book Chapters
This article examines the influence that IHIs (such as the African System on Human and Peoples' Rights) can exert within states, with the facilitative work of local popular forces, and relates that to the possibility of valuable IHI contributions to peacebuilding within deeply fragmented African states. Of all the existing approaches to the study of IHIs, constructivism comes the closest to accounting for the highly significant incidences of IHIjostered (and popular forces-facilitated) 'correspondence' that occurs outside the 'compliance radar'. In this sense the article is a contribution to the growing constructivist human rights and institutional literature sets. In particular the …
Effects Of Familiar Background Music On Working Memory And Motor Tracking, Donald J. Polzella, Scott Schoeling
Effects Of Familiar Background Music On Working Memory And Motor Tracking, Donald J. Polzella, Scott Schoeling
Psychology Faculty Publications
Poster session presented at the meeting of the Psychonomic Society. Two groups of college students participated as listeners or non-listeners, based on whether or not they preferred background music while working or studying. Both groups were trained according to standardized memory search and unstable motor tracking task protocols. Testing consisted of multiple trials at varying levels of difficulty with and without familiar background music. Background music enhanced motor tracking, particularly when the task was challenging. In contrast, background music disrupted aspects of working memory. There were no differences between listeners and non-listeners. The results suggest that, regardless of an individual’s …

Reading The Sign Of The Times: The Humanities, The Catholic Intellectual Tradition, And The Catholic Church, Michelle Loris Ph.D.
English Faculty Publications
This essay proposes that the humanities (and new directions in the humanities) as the centrepiece of the Catholic intellectual tradition can help the Catholic Church “read the signs of the times” in the contemporary world and in that way the Church can better serve the human family of God.

Building Successful On-Line Learning Communities Across International Boundaries: A Case Study, Pat Jefferies, Frances Grodzinsky, Joe Griffin
Building Successful On-Line Learning Communities Across International Boundaries: A Case Study, Pat Jefferies, Frances Grodzinsky, Joe Griffin
School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications
The development of on-line learning communities across international boundaries is now a viable proposition using available asynchronous technologies. As has been reported in previous papers (Grodzinsky, Griffin & Jefferies, 2002; Griffin, Grodzinsky & Jefferies, 2002) such use has proved to be extremely valuable for supporting the teaching of computing and ethics. For example, not only does asynchronous computer conferencing offer new opportunities for students to gain valuable first-hand experience in using such technology to communicate with peers in other countries but it also facilitates them gaining a more direct appreciation of the cultural, legal and ethical differences that abound. However, …
Taking Stock Of Collections - A Strategy For Teaching The Analysis Of Post-Tonal Music, Brian Alegant, Gordon Sly
Taking Stock Of Collections - A Strategy For Teaching The Analysis Of Post-Tonal Music, Brian Alegant, Gordon Sly
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
Analysis is difficult. Teaching analysis is even more difficult. It is especially challenging to coax students to venture beyond the identification of things - formal sections, thematic ideas - toward consideration of the distinguishing qualities of individual works. In the area of post-tonal or extended-tonal music, several writings address the enterprise of analysis, including textbooks by Joel Lester, Joseph Straus, and J. Kent Williams. While each book takes a different approach, their philosophical orientations and strategies are similar. Each provides a solid theoretical backdrop, which includes various tools for describing and manipulating pitch-class collections, then uses analytical examples to illustrate …
Thinking In Sound - A Qualitative Study Of Metaphors For Pitch Perception, Kathy A. Thompson
Thinking In Sound - A Qualitative Study Of Metaphors For Pitch Perception, Kathy A. Thompson
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
The mission for aural skills instruction is to enable students to think in sound. Each fall college teachers meet freshmen with varying levels of experience and ability in music reading and listening. Selecting appropriate strategies for teaching students to auralize, to "hear" how notated music sounds in the absence of physical sound, is difficult not only because of students' different skill levels but also because research in aural skills pedagogy has not indicated an ideal sequence of instruction. Most textbooks present a good variety of exercises but little conceptual framework, leaving that to the teacher's discretion. This qualitative study was …

Race, Rankings, And The Part-Time Free Pass, Paul F. Kirgis
Race, Rankings, And The Part-Time Free Pass, Paul F. Kirgis
Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings
My primary objective in this article is to determine, at least tentatively, the extent to which law schools use the U.S. News free pass to promote diversity by way of their part-time programs. Secondarily, I hope to begin a dialog about whether this use of the free pass is a good thing, from the perspective of a proponent of greater minority representation in law schools. One view perhaps the one held by most people committed to greater law school access for minorities-is that virtually any strategy to increase minority enrollment would have merit. But use of the free pass to …
Fifth Of July : A Character Perspective, Christopher G. Taylor
Fifth Of July : A Character Perspective, Christopher G. Taylor
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
I would like to examine the character of John Landis from Lanford Wilson's Fifth of July for my thesis. As an acting role project, I will explore my process in building a role, from journals documenting the experience, to analyses of the character, the script, and the playwright. My goal is to have a thoroughly documented experience for the purposes of increased specificity in my present work and reflection for the future. In any given theatrical production, an actor will look at several aspects of the script in an attempt to prepare for his or her role. Among these are …
The Effect Of Stuttered Speech On Perceptions Of Job Performance, Donna Lakier
The Effect Of Stuttered Speech On Perceptions Of Job Performance, Donna Lakier
Honors Capstones
The purpose of this study was to determine whether identifying a speaker as a person who stutters influences a listener's perception about an individual's ability to perform a job. Forty- four male and female subjects examined two videotaped interview samples, where one of the interviews included an individual who stuttered. Subjects were instructed to rate the individuals on various traits, including speech characteristics, personality traits and competency related characteristics. Findings indicated that there was no difference in the perceptions of listeners between individuals who stutter and normally fluent individuals, except when it comes to speech related characteristics.
Schizophrenia And Lsd Experiences : More Similar Than Once Thought, Melissa Hoey
Schizophrenia And Lsd Experiences : More Similar Than Once Thought, Melissa Hoey
Honors Capstones
Schizophrenia and LSD have similarities not only in the neurotransmitters they activate specifically dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate; but, also, in hallucinations and psychosis. Because LSD use was criminalized in the 1960s, today limited research is being conducted on humans using LSD. If, in fact, LSD does "model psychosis", it should provide an understanding for the disorder schizophrenia; therefore, a research of existing literature was read and analyzed to see if this claim is true. Evidence found similarities in dopamine (D2) receptors, serotonin (5-HT 2A)receptors, and glutamate, but found differences in the types of hallucinations and psychosis LSD users and people …

Forced Sexual Relations Among Married Young Women In Developing Countries, Deepika Ganju, William Finger, Shireen J. Jejeebhoy, Vijaya Nidadavolu, K.G. Santhya, Iqbal Shah, Shyam Thapa, Ina Warriner
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Recent research in developing countries suggests that a considerable number of young women may experience forced sex within marriage, but most women may be inhibited from reporting these experiences due to shame, fear of reprisal, or deep-rooted unequal gender norms. In September 2003, a global consultative meeting on nonconsensual sex among young people in developing countries was held in New Delhi, India. The meeting was organized by the Population Council in collaboration with World Health Organization/Department of Reproductive Health and Research, and Family Health International/YouthNet. Participants included researchers, legal analysts, representatives from community-based NGOs, policy-makers, and young people themselves. Papers …

Trends And Transitions In Children's Coresidence With Older Adults In Beijing Municipality, Zachary Zimmer, Xianghua Fang, Toshiko Kaneda, Zhe Tang, Julia Kwong
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The reduction in family size in China and concurrent social and economic change are raising concerns that traditional sources of support may be eroding. This Population Council working paper paper examines a) whether rates of coresidence between older adults and their adult children in the Beijing municipality of China have been declining, and b) the determinants of coresidence and coresidence transitions. Results suggest that family support structures for the elderly, when they are facilitated through coresidence, remain basically intact, particularly for those who require the greatest amount of support. Further assessment is required to elucidate the effects of availability, need, …

On The Conceptual And Linguistic Activity Of Psychologists: The Study Of Behavior From The 1890s To The 1990s And Beyond, David E. Leary
Psychology Faculty Publications
In the early twentieth century psychology became the study of "behavior." This article reviews developments within animal psychology, functional psychology, and American society and culture that help explain how a term rarely used in the first years of the century became not only an accepted scientific concept but even, for many, an allencompassing label for the entire subject matter of the discipline. The subsequent conceptual and linguistic activity of John B. Watson, Edward C. Tolman, Clark L. Hull, and B.F. Skinner, as they attempted to explain "behavior" throughout the course of the twentieth century, is then discussed. Finally, the article …

Travels In Louisiana: Journeys Into Ethnicity And Heritage By Two Hispanic Groups, Dominica Dominguez Ramirez
Travels In Louisiana: Journeys Into Ethnicity And Heritage By Two Hispanic Groups, Dominica Dominguez Ramirez
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis addresses how the notions of ethnicity and heritage are experienced, negotiated, and displayed by two Hispanic groups in Louisiana. Hispanic identity is a nebulous term anywhere and Louisiana is no exception. In this investigation the two groups- a heritage foundation of descendants of Canary Islanders and descendants of the of the Los Adaes communities- both profess Hispanic heritage, display it, and promote this heritage in divergent ways, with significant differences in the meaning of their heritages. Differences between groups are also reflected in the historical spatial representations of the two groups, with Isleños connecting with a far-away but …
Are We Honestly Studying Malingering?: A Profile And Comparison Of Simulated Suspected Malingerers, Adrianne M. Brennan
Are We Honestly Studying Malingering?: A Profile And Comparison Of Simulated Suspected Malingerers, Adrianne M. Brennan
LSU Master's Theses
Malingering research typically uses analog simulation designs or the differential prevalence design among "real" patients. Both have been criticized for methodological limitations in external and internal validity, respectively. Samples of simulated malingerers were compared to suspected malingerers to examine generalizability of analog findings. Overall results support the use of simulation designs. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that stringent selection of suspected malingerers maintains internal validity of the differential prevalence design. A second focus, to determine if demographic matching of simulated malingerers is necessary, showed that matching on age and race is not necessary.
