Satisfaction With Research Training In Christian Psychology Doctoral Programs: Survey Findings And Implications, Mark R. Mcminn, Peter C. Hill, Justin W. Griffin Jan 2004

Satisfaction With Research Training In Christian Psychology Doctoral Programs: Survey Findings And Implications, Mark R. Mcminn, Peter C. Hill, Justin W. Griffin

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Perceptions of research training at seven explicitly Christian doctoral programs in clinical psychology were assessed with a satisfaction survey. A total of 283 students, 98 alumni, and 51 faculty completed the online questionnaire. Perceived strengths include faculty-student collaboration, encouraging students to present at national meetings, respect for faculty, and effective curricula. Areas for future growth include enhanced research funding, making research mentoring available to all students, and decreasing the perceived dichotomy between clinical and research competence. Self-reported faculty and student publication and presentation rates are also presented and discussed.

Olanzapine Attenuates Cue-Elicited Craving For Tobacco, Kent E. Hutchinson, Marie-Christine Rutter Goodworth, Raymond Niaura, Robert Swift, Wallace B. Pickworth, Laura Sobik Jan 2004

Olanzapine Attenuates Cue-Elicited Craving For Tobacco, Kent E. Hutchinson, Marie-Christine Rutter Goodworth, Raymond Niaura, Robert Swift, Wallace B. Pickworth, Laura Sobik

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Rationale: Recent biological conceptualizations of craving and addiction have implicated mesolimbic dopamine activity as a central feature of the process of addiction. Imaging, and pharmacological studies have supported a role for dopaminergic structures in cue-elicited craving for tobacco.

Objective: If mesolimbic dopamine activity is associated with cue-elicited craving for tobacco, a dopamine antagonist should attenuate cueelicited craving for tobacco. Thus, the aim of the present study was to determine whether an atypical antipsychotic (olanzapine, 5 mg) decreased cue-elicited craving for tobacco.

Method: Participants were randomly assigned to 5 days of pretreatment with olanzapine (5 mg; n=31) or were randomly assigned …

Flawed Justice: Limitation Of Parental Remedies For The Loss Of Consortium Of Adult Children, William S. Bailey Jan 2004

Flawed Justice: Limitation Of Parental Remedies For The Loss Of Consortium Of Adult Children, William S. Bailey

Seattle University Law Review

This article presents the inherent contradiction between a parent- child relationship that has steadily evolved from the early 20th Century to the present and the multitude of court decisions on damages that remain studiously ignorant of this shift. Part I of the article will set forth the common law origins of restrictions on recovery for wrongful death within the context of a shifting view of children from economic units to objects of adoration. Part II will examine the devastating impact that the loss of an adult child has on parents both from their perspectives and from now existing research. In …

Bono, The Culture Wars, And A Profane Decision: The Fcc's Reversal Of Course On Indecency Determinations And Its New Path On Profanity, Clay Calvert

Seattle University Law Review

This article examines the FCC's vigorous new approach to indecency and profanity determinations, including both the legal issues and the greater cultural, political, economic, and social contexts in which that approach is developing. Part I describes the FCC's initial decision regarding the Golden Globes' 2003 broadcast and then compares it with the March 2004 reversal. In the process, Part I lays the historical framework for the FCC's power over indecent expression on the public airwaves. Part II then contextualizes the FCC's new course of action within the framework of the ongoing cultural wars and political battles in the United States …

Technology And Classroom Communication: The Influence Of Class Type, Class Size, And Instructional Technology Use On Teacher Verbal And Nonverbal Immediacy, Paula D. Turman, Melissa Davis, Joe Gamble

Iowa Journal of Communication

As the use of instructional technology in the college classroom has increased over the past decade, instructors have had to adapt their teaching and communication behaviors in order to successfully integrate teaching styles into this new instructional environment. However, limited empirical testing has attempted to determine the impact increased technology use has had on instructor communication behaviors. Thus, this study examined 136 undergraduate students to determine how an instructor's technology use, delivery method and course size influences student reports of teacher verbal and nonverbal immediacy behaviors. Results indicated significant differences based on the type of technology (PowerPoint and video) for …

Teaching Speaking And Listening In The K-12 Classroom: Current Status, Rationale, And Resources, Pamela Cooper, Mary Bozik, Sherwyn P. Morreale

Iowa Journal of Communication

This article reviews the growing awareness of the need for communication competence for high school students, both those entering the workplace and those enrolling in college. The National Communication Association (NCA) and its members have worked diligently to help students achieve these communication competencies by providing National Standards and resource material for K-12 language arts teachers and administrators. Evidence is offered to support the claim of growing recognition and the process of developing these materials is described, implications for the development and use of these materials to the communication discipline are explored and four challenges are outlined. The Standards and …

The Process For Becoming A Law School Professor In The United States, Daniel H. Foote Jan 2004

The Process For Becoming A Law School Professor In The United States, Daniel H. Foote

Articles

As the process of legal education reform in Japan, centered on the establishment of a new tier of professional graduate schools in law, moves forward, one issue that has arisen is how law professors will be trained in coming years. In that connection, I am frequently asked what the typical route is for training law school professors in the US. Based in part on an examination of the backgrounds prior to entering law teaching for over 500 law professors at eight US law schools and on personal experiences (including serving for three years on the appointments committee at the University …

Capitalism And Freedom -- For Whom? Feminist Legal Theory And Progressive Corporate Law,, Kellye Y. Testy Jan 2004

Capitalism And Freedom -- For Whom? Feminist Legal Theory And Progressive Corporate Law,, Kellye Y. Testy

Articles

Beginning at least in the 1980s, the version of corporate law and governance prevailing in the U.S. (as well as widely exported to other nations) was a radically privatized one, treating the corporation as a contractual arrangement for maximizing shortterm share price in a laissez faire global marketplace. Though many robust and varied social movements, many of which were bolstered by the 1999 WTO protests in Seattle, have been and are engaged in challenging this hegemony from many angles, few have found their way into corporate law reform. That is not to say, however, that there are no progressive legal …

Consent Engendered: A Feminist Critique Of Consensual Fourth Amendment Searches, Dana Raigrodski Jan 2004

Consent Engendered: A Feminist Critique Of Consensual Fourth Amendment Searches, Dana Raigrodski

Articles

As I will argue, the Court's consent-to-search cases are driven by this patriarchal ideology to maintain social structures of power disparities and to perpetuate the subordination of women, minorities, and other disempowered members of society.

We need to acknowledge the power and submission paradigm that underlies police-citizen encounters and to scrutinize the entire notion of consent. In order to confront both power and consent, I will turn to feminist critique of consent, particularly in the area of rape, and to feminist writings about choice and agency. Based on these writings I will argue that by distinguishing coerced consent to a …
