But What Is There To See?: An Exploration Of A Great Plains Aesthetic, Shaunanne Tangney Jan 2004

But What Is There To See?: An Exploration Of A Great Plains Aesthetic, Shaunanne Tangney

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In the fall of 2001 I taught a beginning college composition course at Minot State University, a small state university located in the northwestern quadrant of North Dakota. It is typical of such courses to include a fair amount of reading, and one of the texts I assigned was Ian Frazier's Great Plains. The book is a travelogue that Frazier wrote while living in and traveling throughout the Great Plains. It is written in a direct and inviting style and provides insight about the very place in which the students and I were living. I thought students would take …

Telling Stories About Lewis And Clark: Does History Still Matter?, Andrew R. L. Cayton Jan 2004

Telling Stories About Lewis And Clark: Does History Still Matter?, Andrew R. L. Cayton

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

It is obvious that Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are famous men. The story of their expedition and the people who traveled with them, including Clark's enslaved African-American York and the Indian woman called Sacajawea, is an iconic narrative of Americana. The fifty-four page annotated list of books, pamphlets, and articles published between 1906 and 2001 in The Literature of the Lewis and Clark Expedition attests to a fascination that took hold during the centennial of their great trek and threatens to swamp us all during its bicentennial.

From Sgid And Gift To Bbq: Streamlining Midterm Student Evaluations To Improve Teaching And Learning, Margaret K. Snooks, Sue E. Neeley, Kathleen M. Williamson

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Faculty members want feedback about ways to improve learning. Midterm assessments are more useful than end-of-term student evaluations. Not all institutions provide faculty development consultants. This chapter presents an innovative process appropriate for institutions currently without teaching enhancement centers. The Bare Bones Questions (BBQ) process consists of empathic trained colleagues facilitating students’ evaluative discussions. Students and faculty members are overwhelmingly positive about the process piloted for the past three years. Students’ suggestions can include simple changes in classroom environment or enhanced sensitivity to cultural diversity. BBQ may build intra-institutional collegiality by reducing the isolation of teaching.

Problem–Based Service–Learning: Rewards And Challenges With Undergraduates, Kenneth France

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Students in three Abnormal Psychology sections participated in problem-based service learning (PBSL). Desired learning outcomes included humanizing persons diagnosed with mental health disorders and more fully appreciating challenges experienced by such individuals. Students completing the PBSL projects evidenced decreased negative feelings and increased positive feelings toward consumers of mental health services. According to the community partners, students made valuable contributions to both the organizations and the mental health consumers served by those organizations. Students saw the activity as being challenging and rewarding.

Making Adjunct Faculty Part Of The Academic Community, Karen R. Krupar Jan 2004

Making Adjunct Faculty Part Of The Academic Community, Karen R. Krupar

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Hundreds of adjunct faculty in four-year colleges and universities teach over 45% of the courses, especially in the general education programs, but few institutions have chosen to construct adjunct faculty development programs that integrate these faculty into the instructional community. Metropolitan State College of Denver, recipient ofa Title III grant to build an adjunct development program received a TIA-CREF Hesburgh Award of Excellence in 2001 for its innovative adjunct support activities. This chapter articulates the features of this successful program and its effect on the adjunct faculty cohort at the college.

Using Data To Enhance College Teaching: Course And Departmental Assessment Results As A Faculty Development Tool, Catherine M. Wehlburg

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

This article highlights the need for using assessment of student learning outcomes data to guide reaching-related farolty development decision-making. Literature on the topic suggests that using assessment results to inform faculty development discussions makes better use of both the assessment data and the time spent in faculty development. Feedback and consultations regarding feedback seem to be important variables in determining if changes in teaching will occur. Types of assessment data that may especially inform reaching-related conversations are discussed.

Assessing The Academic And Professional Development Needs Of Graduate Students, Laurie Bellows, Ellen Weissinger Jan 2004

Assessing The Academic And Professional Development Needs Of Graduate Students, Laurie Bellows, Ellen Weissinger

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

This article describes the results of a survey that assessed the self-perceived career goals and academic and professional development needs of master’s and doctoral-level graduate students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Both graduate students (n = 440) and graduate program coordinators (n = 23) were surveyed to provide an empirical basis for developing a strategic plan for graduate student academic and professional development activities. Results suggested that doctoral and master’s students express different developmental needs, and that doctoral students’ needs differed at different stages of their academic career. Implications for practice inherent in the survey findings are discussed, and the …

Integrating Multicultural Literature And The Arts Across The Curriculum, Phyllis Mae Davis Dragun Jan 2004

Integrating Multicultural Literature And The Arts Across The Curriculum, Phyllis Mae Davis Dragun

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

With the current emphasis on improving reading and comprehension in the school system, many teachers find it difficult to meet this challenge to providing increased reading time for students and still maintain the required classroom instruction in other areas of curriculum. Additionally, present teacher education classes stress the importance of recognizing the diversity in our classroom, school, community, and the world. The use of multicultural literature to create lessons across the curriculum is a good way to address literacy and diversity concerns. While we do live in a diverse world, I feel that one group of cultures that has been …

Congressional Representation Of Black Interests: Recognizing The Importance Of Stability, Guy-Uriel Charles, Vincent L. Hutchins, Harwood K. Mcclerking

Faculty Scholarship

The relationship between black constituency size and congressional support for black interests has two important attributes: magnitude and stability. Although previous research has examined the first characteristic, scant attention has been directed at the second. This article examines the relationship between district racial composition and congressional voting patterns with a particular emphasis on the stability of support across different types of votes and different types of districts. We hypothesize that, among white Democrats, the influence of black constituency size will be less stable in the South, owing in part to this region’s more racially divided constituencies. Examining LCCR scores from …

Utah's Plight: A Passage Through The Great Depression, Joseph F. Darowski Jan 2004

Utah's Plight: A Passage Through The Great Depression, Joseph F. Darowski

Theses and Dissertations

The Great Depression marked a fateful passage in the annals of the American people. President Roosevelt's New Deal, the nation's signature response, proved to be a determined but erratic reaction. Against the backdrop of a nation deeply mired in an unrelenting international depression, dramatic events played themselves out in the lives of the men and women of Utah. Throughout, fidelity to principles of independence, self-reliance, and self-sufficiency were sorely challenged.

The people of Utah found succor in two almost diametrically opposed responses. The New Deal offered an amalgam of programs and panaceas through which the federal government attempted to deliver …

An Analysis Of The Effects That Several Design Variables Have On The Accuracy And Precision Of Glass’ Delta And Hedges’ G, Joshua N. Dryer Jan 2004

An Analysis Of The Effects That Several Design Variables Have On The Accuracy And Precision Of Glass’ Delta And Hedges’ G, Joshua N. Dryer

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Effect size is the standardized effect that some treatment has on a sample of a population. In particular, Hedges' g and Glass delta are mean difference effect size estimators that are used to compute the effect sizes found in an experimental situation. A confidence interval is an interval placed around a point estimate that indicates the precision with which the point estimate can be made. This paper provides an explanation of the concept of effect size estimation and confidence interval calculation, the different methods that can be used to calculate effect sizes and confidence intervals, and applies these methods in …

Lives, Life-Years, And Willingness To Pay, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2004

Lives, Life-Years, And Willingness To Pay, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

In protecting safety, health, and the environment, government has increasingly relied on cost-benefit analysis. In undertaking cost-benefit analysis, the government has monetized risks of death through the idea of the value of a statistical life (VSL), currently assessed at about $6.1 million. But the government should rely instead on the value of a statistical life-year (VSLY), in a way that would likely result in lower benefits calculations for elderly people, and higher benefits calculations for children. The hard question involves not whether to undertake this shift, but how to monetize life-years, and here willingness to pay (WTP) is generally the …

Properties Of Marriage, Carolyn J. Frantz, Hanoch Dagan Jan 2004

Properties Of Marriage, Carolyn J. Frantz, Hanoch Dagan

Articles

In this Article, Professors Frantz and Dagan articulate and examine one ideal for the institution of marriage-marriage as an egalitarian liberal community. Under this vision, a commitment to marital community, where spouses share with each other without reference to individual desert, is combined with a concern for non-subordination and the protection of individual autonomy through, primarily, free exit. Professors Frantz and Dagan argue that, contrary to the common assumption that these goals are incompatible, they can be accommodated to a remarkable degree. They then trace the implications of this vision of marriage for marital property law, and use it to …
