An Ongoing Relationship With Theory Inside The Structures Of Tenure Track, Kwakiutl Dreher, Harriet Mcleod, Gary K. Perry Nov 2004

An Ongoing Relationship With Theory Inside The Structures Of Tenure Track, Kwakiutl Dreher, Harriet Mcleod, Gary K. Perry

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 9th Annual Conference (2004)

This panel asks how can junior faculty of color at a predominantly white research I institution stay versed and acquire new insights about theoretical principles? Tenure-track faculty are aware of expectations to produce scholarship, teach, and provide service worthy of tenure. But when, where, and more significant, with whom can the ongoing relationship with theory occur? What are the benefits of a community that has been developed to facilitate the dialogue on theory? Of paramount concern, how can the dialogues count towards tenure?

The Landmine Victim Assistance Component Implemented By The Oas In Nicaragua, Carlos Orozco Nov 2004

The Landmine Victim Assistance Component Implemented By The Oas In Nicaragua, Carlos Orozco

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

In 1990, Nicaragua registered approximately 135,000 mines buried within its national territory and another 133,435 mines in military stockpiles as a result of the internal conflict witnessed in Nicaragua during the 1980s. Although I will not touch on the details related to the operations, it is important to note that Nicaragua is the most heavily mined country in Central America and on the whole continent. As of June 2004, approximately 27,400 anti-personnel mines remain buried within Nicaraguan territory.

The Northwest’S Phantom Pool: Superintendent Certificate Holders Who Do Not Plan To Apply And Why, Mimi Wolverton Nov 2004

The Northwest’S Phantom Pool: Superintendent Certificate Holders Who Do Not Plan To Apply And Why, Mimi Wolverton

The Rural Educator

Responses gathered in a recent study of the superintendency in the Pacific Northwest suggest that less than 25% of sitting superintendents in the year 2000 were under the age of 50; and 40% of those who were 50 years or older planned to retire within the next four years. While the pool of potential applicants includes over 1,000 superintendent certificate holders, fewer than 150 of respondents in the same study planned to apply for upcoming vacancies. This article examines aspects of the position that serve as disincentives to seemingly qualified candidates and the policy ramifications of possible pool inadequacy within …

Recruiting And Interviewing Teachers In Rural School Districts: Protocol Or Potluck, Joe Nichols Nov 2004

Recruiting And Interviewing Teachers In Rural School Districts: Protocol Or Potluck, Joe Nichols

The Rural Educator

Through administrator and teacher surveys and interviews, this study examined recruiting and interviewing practices of eighty-three rural school districts located in, and between, the rural Ozark Plateau and Mississippi River Delta. Survey results indicated that districts with smaller student populations were far less likely to have an identified protocol in place to recruit and interview teachers. In addition, the study found that critical issues such as student achievement and qualifications of teachers were not addressed during the recruiting or interviewing phases of the employment process. Finally, this research brought to light questionable interviewing practices leading the author to make recommendations …

The Appalachian Model Teaching Consortium: Preparing Teachers For Rural Appalachia, Alvin C. Proffit, R. Paul Sale, Ann E. Alexander, Ruth S. Andrews Nov 2004

The Appalachian Model Teaching Consortium: Preparing Teachers For Rural Appalachia, Alvin C. Proffit, R. Paul Sale, Ann E. Alexander, Ruth S. Andrews

The Rural Educator

The Appalachian Model Teacher Consortium is a partnership involving Radford University, Wytheville Community College, and the Grayson County (Virginia) School System. Its purpose is to prepare highly qualified teachers for rural southwest Virginia. The model was developed in response to the growing teacher shortage facing school districts in rural southwest Virginia. Poorer, more rural districts often have weaker tax bases that provide limited, and at times inadequate, financial support for their school districts. This lack of local resources often results in lower salaries and benefits when compared to many districts that compete for the shrinking pool of potential teachers. Additionally, …

Approaches And Methods In Language Teaching: An Investigative Look At A Total Physical Response In Chattanooga Area Classrooms, Alicia R. Hannah Nov 2004

Approaches And Methods In Language Teaching: An Investigative Look At A Total Physical Response In Chattanooga Area Classrooms, Alicia R. Hannah

Honors Theses

I was sitting on a leather couch at a local hangout trying to cram for a test in my Advanced Spanish Grammar class. In front of me, I had my textbook open to a picture of a crowded South American intersection and I was frantically trying to memorize a list of more than 100 Spanish vocabulary words related to automobiles. I had been studying Spanish since the eighth grade and was just amazed that 10 years later I was still having trouble internalizing certain words. I was talking aloud to myself, trying to remember the verb "to start the car." …

Rural Elementary Administrators’ Views Of High-Stakes Testing, Robert J. Egley, Brett D. Jones Nov 2004

Rural Elementary Administrators’ Views Of High-Stakes Testing, Robert J. Egley, Brett D. Jones

The Rural Educator

This study examines how rural elementary school administrators perceive the effects of high-stakes testing in comparison to suburban and urban elementary administrators. High-stakes testing had a greater impact, both positively and negatively, on rural administrators than on their counterparts in suburban and urban schools. Specifically, the positive effects were that rural administrators were more motivated by the testing program to do a better job, found the test results more useful in assessing teachers, and found the test results more useful in meeting the academic needs of students. The negative effects were that rural administrators felt more pressure than urban administrators …

The Effects Of Militant Press On Nigeria's Democratic Evolution, Oluwaniran Malaolu Nov 2004

The Effects Of Militant Press On Nigeria's Democratic Evolution, Oluwaniran Malaolu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This is an in-depth study of the Nigerian press, the ubiquitous behemoth which called itself the "defender" of Nigeria's national independence and the last "hope" of the common man. It's a bold attempt to critically examine its antecedents, its evolution or development especially the historical, political, technological and socio-economic events that had impacted its growth, its world views and ideologies. It's a thorough assessment of the press' influence on Nigeria's socio-economic and political development, as well as the suitability of its tactics and posturing toward attaining its set goals of economic and political emancipation of Nigerians. Most importantly, this study …

Copd Dyspnea Management By Family Caregivers, Loris A. Thomas Nov 2004

Copd Dyspnea Management By Family Caregivers, Loris A. Thomas

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

An estimated 14 million people in the United States currently have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This nonreversible illness causes progressively decreasing airflow and is manifested by frequent episodes of acute and chronic dyspnea. The purposes of this study were: 1) to examine the relationships between mastery (MS), negative affectivity trait (NA), perceptions of patient dyspnea severity (DSI), and perceptions of which dyspnea interventions are effective (DE) among family caregiver-COPD patient dyads and 2) to examine the degree of agreement between the dyad members regarding dyspnea assessment and management. The study subjects were elderly (patients = 71.6 years, caregivers = …
