The blatant barriers are down. Women are now routinely chief scientists on major cruises, lead field parties to all continents, and have risen to leadership positions in professional organizations, academic departments, and funding agencies. Nonetheless, barriers remain. Women continue to be under-represented in the Earth, ocean, and atmospheric sciences.

The work should show problem-solving skills and demonstrate new conceptual outcomes.

Toward An Understanding Of Norwegian Dwelling, Amber R. Murray Jan 2004

Toward An Understanding Of Norwegian Dwelling, Amber R. Murray

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Neither traditional nor modern Norwegian artifacts have received significant critical attention or appreciation in mainstream histories of we stem art or architecture. This lack of cultural exportation has to do with the fact that surveys of art and architecture history, as well as close studies of the modern period, have tended to focus on canonical works, and, often as a result, the artifacts of Norway have been excluded from this mainstream history. In response to this paucity of scholarship, this study investigates the intersections between Norway's art and culture through a synthesis of phenomenal readings of the country's built landscape …

Signs And Symptoms Of A Stressed System: How To Recognize And Address Child Maltreatment In The Home, Andrea L. Rotzien Ph.D. Jan 2004

Signs And Symptoms Of A Stressed System: How To Recognize And Address Child Maltreatment In The Home, Andrea L. Rotzien Ph.D.

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

The fact that the disabled are at high risk for maltreatment is well documented (Goldson, 1998; Sullivan & Knutson, 2000; Zeanah & Hamilton, 1998). Reynolds (2001) reported that 39-68% of girls and 16-30% of boys with developmental disabilities would be abused by the age of 18. Westcott and Jones (1999) note that identification, assessment, and prevention is complicated by the communication deficits of this population, their dependency on others, and a tendency for professionals to not report abuse. Thus, it is imperative that professionals understand the risks for abuse and maltreatment in this population. The risks factors and signs of …

Exploration Of Vr Acceptance And Ethnicity: A National Investigation, Keith B. Wilson Ph.D.

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

The reported study examined whether African Americans, European Americans, Native Americans/Alaskan Natives, and Asians/Pacific Islanders with disabilities would differ in their rates of vocational rehabilitation (VR) acceptance in the United States. The test statistic revealed that a significant difference existed regarding ethnicity and VR acceptance. Moreover, a small but significant association emerged between ethnicity and VR acceptance (Cramer’s V = .023). The results revealed that in the United States, European Americans are more likely to be accepted for VR services than are African Americans. The author discusses possible barriers to VR acceptance for underserved and underrepresented groups in the United …

Blue-Collar Work, Career, And Success: Occupational Narratives Of Sisu, Kristen Lucas, Patrice M. Buzzanel Jan 2004

Blue-Collar Work, Career, And Success: Occupational Narratives Of Sisu, Kristen Lucas, Patrice M. Buzzanel

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This study examined underground iron ore miners’ occupational narratives to uncover how their stories socialize miners into blue-collar careers and reinforce their work identities. Through the root theme of sisu (Finnish for inner determination), underground miners create a status hierarchy that is used to construct a sense of pride around their work and to establish milestones of success for themselves and others in their workgroup. Furthermore, they communicatively construct exemplars that guide their performance and decisions during the unfolding of their work experiences. Their discourses provide alternatives to white-collar conceptualizations and practices of careers and success.

Age Differences In Central (Semantic) And Peripheral Processing: The Importance Of Considering Both Response Times And Errors, Philip A. Allen, Martin D. Murphy, Miron Kaufman, Karen E. Groth, Ana Begovic Jan 2004

Age Differences In Central (Semantic) And Peripheral Processing: The Importance Of Considering Both Response Times And Errors, Philip A. Allen, Martin D. Murphy, Miron Kaufman, Karen E. Groth, Ana Begovic

Physics Faculty Publications

In this project we examined the effect of adult age on visual word recognition by using combined reaction time (RT) and accuracy methods based on the Hick–Hyman law. This was necessary because separate Brinley analyses of RT and errors resulted in contradicting results. We report the results of a lexical decision task experiment (with 96 younger adults and 97 older adults). We transformed the error data into entropy and then predicted RT by using entropy values separately for exposure duration (thought to influence peripheral processes) and word frequency (thought to influence central processes). For exposure duration, the entropy–RT functions indicate …

The Concept Of "Harm" In Computer-Generated Images Of Child Pornography, 22 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 717 (2004), Jisuk Woo

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

There has been a lot of controversy about the harm caused by computer-generated child pornography. This article examines the new ways in which technological development has created new concerns about child pornography especially in the context of challenging the concept of “harm” in the existing child pornography law. The author presents and discusses the existing child pornography laws and jurisprudence as well as the relevant arguments raised against it most of which are based on the “harm” caused by child pornography. This concept of “harm” and the different ways it is conceived and understood is analyzed and empirical evidence supporting …

Concurrent Validity Study Of The Clinical Assessment Of Depression With The Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale, Brooke Wootton Tinsley Jan 2004

Concurrent Validity Study Of The Clinical Assessment Of Depression With The Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale, Brooke Wootton Tinsley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

It is critical for the depressive symptoms of adolescents to be recognized, evaluated, and treated. Depression can increase the risk for illness and interpersonal difficulties in the future and affect almost every aspect of an individual’s life. Self-report measures are often utilized to assess depression, and when these measures are able to effectively detect depression, diagnosis and treatment are expedited. In order to validate the usefulness and psychometric properties of a new self-report measure, existing measures are often used as one criterion by which to judge them. The present study explored concurrent and discriminant validity of a new self-report depression …

Dark Days In The Ohio Valley: Three Western Kentucky Lynchings, 1884-1911, Woodrow Wilson Maglinger, Iii Jan 2004

Dark Days In The Ohio Valley: Three Western Kentucky Lynchings, 1884-1911, Woodrow Wilson Maglinger, Iii

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis investigates three lynchings of African Americans in Progressive-Era western Kentucky. The first occurred in Owensboro. In July 1884, a masked mob at-tacked the Daviess County jail. Richard May, an African-American field hand, had been incarcerated for the alleged sexual assault of a local farmer’s daughter. During the lynch mob’s actions that claimed May’s life, the white county jailer was killed protecting his prisoner. Ironically, just two decades earlier Jailer William Lucas had fought for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War.

In nearby Hawesville in September 1897, Raymond Bushrod was also arrested on suspicion of raping …

A STUDY OF VERBAL IMMEDIACY IN ARMY SIMULATOR MAINTENANCE TRAINING Robin Leigh Fulkerson August 2004 48 pages Directed by: Sally Hastings, Judith Hoover, and George Musambira Department of Communication Western Kentucky University Rapid development of computer technology has encouraged the use of computers in education; however, understanding the impact this technology has on classroom communication is just beginning. At present, no studies explore the impact computer systems (e.g., virtual reality simulation) have on verbal immediacy. This study examines the influence simulator training has on verbal immediacy and quality of instruction between students and instructors in Army maintenance training. Thirty-nine Army …
