Early Head Start: Identifying And Serving Children With Disabilities, Carla Peterson, Shavaun Wall, Helen Raikes, Ellen E. Kisker, Mark E. Swanson, Judith Jerald, Jane B. Atwater, Wei Qiao
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Early Head Start (EHS) is a comprehensive, two-generation program that provides services to low-income families with children under the age of 3 years. As part of their mandate, staff members of EHS programs collaborate with other service providers in their local communities, including Part C and childcare providers. The incidence of disabilities among low-income children was tracked as part of the EHS Research and Evaluation Project. The incidence of indicators of disabilities (or potential disabilities) was extremely high (87%) among these very young children living in poverty; however, only 99 participating families (4.7% of the sample) received Part C services. …

Algorithmic Fusion Of Gene Expression Profiling For Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Outcome Prediction, Qiuming Zhu, Hongmei Cui, Kahai Cao, Wing C. Chan
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Many different methods and techniques have been investigated for the processing and analysis of microarray gene expression profiling datasets. It is noted that the accuracy and reliability of the results are often dependent on the measurement approaches applied, and no single measurement so far is guaranteed to generate a satisfactory result. In this paper, an algorithmic fusion approach is presented for extracting genes that are predictive to clinical outcomes (survival-fatal) of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma on a set of microarray data for gene expression profiling. The approach integrates a set of measurements from different aspects in terms of the discrepancy …

What Kinds Of Adolescent Leaders Are Hiding In Newbery Books?, Carol Jasperse Lautenbach
What Kinds Of Adolescent Leaders Are Hiding In Newbery Books?, Carol Jasperse Lautenbach
Dissertations
Though adolescent leadership is worth developing, often it is not addressed effectively in the general middle school curriculum. This study addresses adolescent leadership by describing and discussing eight major leadership categories and 38 subcategories found in seventeen representative Newbery Award-winning books. The sample was chosen using a multiple-step process and contained fictional stories with adolescent protagonists in realistic situations. Content analysis was used to quantify and analyze the leadership themes; a code book was used to organize data. Occurrence of each sub-category was ranked for prevalence within each book. These rankings form the basis for the analysis of findings which …

Governance Structures, Legal Systems, And The Concept Of Law, Lewis A. Kornhauser
Governance Structures, Legal Systems, And The Concept Of Law, Lewis A. Kornhauser
Chicago-Kent Law Review
Debate over the concept of law currently contrasts conceptual and interpretive accounts. This Article begins to elaborate a social-scientific conception of law as a subset of a concept of a governance structure. To begin, it distinguishes institutional structures, realized institutions, and functioning institutions. Governance structures consist of institutional structures that perform central tasks of governance. Dworkin's interpretive conception of law extends over the domain of functioning institutions; positivist, conceptual accounts of law extend over the domain of institutional structures. From this perspective legal systems may be best understood as governance structures that satisfy the political value legality; different concepts of …
Reasonable Accommodation Under The Ada: Are Employers Required To Participate In The Interactive Process? The Courts Say "Yes" But The Law Says "No", John R. Autry
Chicago-Kent Law Review
The Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA") generally requires employers to "reasonably accommodate" a "qualified" employee's disability. Unfortunately, the ADA is silent as to the appropriate method for fashioning reasonable accommodations. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ("EEOC") issued regulations endorsing an "interactive process" by which an employer and its "qualified" disabled employee work together to devise the proper accommodation. However, the Supreme Court has yet to determine whether courts must defer to these regulations, leaving the circuit courts of appeals to issue differing opinions on whether the EEOC's interactive process is best characterized as a requirement or merely a suggestion.
Thus, …

How Did Belle La Follette Resist Racial Segregation In Washington D.C., 1913-1914?, Nancy Unger
How Did Belle La Follette Resist Racial Segregation In Washington D.C., 1913-1914?, Nancy Unger
History
Beginning in 1913, progressive reformer Belle Case La Follette wrote a series of articles for the "women's page" of her family's magazine, denouncing the sudden racial segregation in several departments of the federal government. Those articles reveal progressive efforts to appeal specifically to women to combat injustice, and also demonstrate the ability of women to voice important political opinions prior to suffrage.
The Unexpected Guest: Law And Economics, Law And Other Cognate Disciplines, And The Future Of Legal Scholarship, Thomas S. Ulen
The Unexpected Guest: Law And Economics, Law And Other Cognate Disciplines, And The Future Of Legal Scholarship, Thomas S. Ulen
Chicago-Kent Law Review
This Article argues that law and economics has worked a remarkable but unexpected change on legal scholarship. Many critics mistakenly claim that the most notable effect of law and economics lies in its conclusions about substantive legal rules. This Article argues that this criticism misses the far more radical effect of law and economics on the study of law—namely, its commitment to the scientific method of inquiry, a method that relies upon theorizing, then performing empirical work to verify or refute the theory, and then refining the theory in light of the results. The Article explains why this change has …
Should Law Professors Teach Public Choice Theory?, Guido Pincione
Should Law Professors Teach Public Choice Theory?, Guido Pincione
Chicago-Kent Law Review
This Article argues that various philosophically interesting objections to the use of public choice theory in legal education are misguided. Some writers hold that public choice theory, being descriptive, cannot help law students develop the interpretive skills needed by judges and lawyers. I reply that this objection rests on the false assumption that public choice theory lacks resources to accommodate rule following. Others object that public choice theory fosters cynicism and uncooperative attitudes. This rests on an unduly restrictive conception of the theory of rationality presupposed by public choice analysis. The public-choice focus on efficiency has also been disputed. In …
The Law And Economics Of Securities Fraud: Section 29(A) And The Non-Reliance Clause, David K. Lutz
The Law And Economics Of Securities Fraud: Section 29(A) And The Non-Reliance Clause, David K. Lutz
Chicago-Kent Law Review
This Note examines whether precluding a plaintiff from claiming reasonable reliance on representations made outside of a final written agreement containing a non- reliance clause violates Section 29(a) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. The Note uses the Third Circuit's recent decision in AES v. Dow Chemical Co. to put the issue in context, and concludes that the court reached the wrong conclusion. By accepting the assumptions of law and economics, and addressing the arguments against such an approach from behavioralists and other critics, the Note argues that adopting a clear rule enforcing non-reliance clauses produces certainty in contractual …
The Understanding And Utilization Of Occupational Therapy Services By Medical Doctors In Acute Hospital Settings, Naina Jamani
The Understanding And Utilization Of Occupational Therapy Services By Medical Doctors In Acute Hospital Settings, Naina Jamani
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine what medical doctors working in the Canadian healthcare system know about occupational therapy, and if this understanding of occupational therapy is deemed valuable by the rate of referrals generated by these practitioners. This study will examine the relationship between physician's knowledge level and referrals to occupational therapy. The study instrument was a survey that consisted of eight questions, seven multiple choice and one open-ended response. The study took approximately five minutes to complete. A total of forty surveys were distributed at three different acute hospital settings. A total of fourteen or thirty-five …

Environmental Education And Metaethics, Owen Goldin
Environmental Education And Metaethics, Owen Goldin
Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications
Contrā Dale Jamieson, the study of the metaethical foundations of environmental ethics may well lead students to a more environmentally responsible way of life. For although metaethics is rarely decisive in decision making and action, there are two kinds of circumstances in which it can play a crucial role in our practical decisions. First, decisions that have unusual features do not summon habitual ethical reactions, and hence invite the application of ethical precepts that the study of metaethics and ethical theory isolate and clarify. Second, there are times in which the good of others (including organisms and systems in the …

Modeling Generalized Cost Of Travel For Rural Bus Users: A Case Study, C.V. Phani Kumar, Debasis Basu, Bhargab Maitra
Journal of Public Transportation
In order to formulate rational improvement proposal for rural bus services, it is necessary to understand how people value different attributes of travel. In this article, the disutilities of travel have been modeled based on stated choice data collected from trip-makers traveling along a rural bus route in Midnapur district, West Bengal, India. Multinomial Logit Model (MNL) is used to develop utility equations and the total disutility of travel is estimated in the form of generalized cost. The perceived values associated with in-vehicle travel time, service headway, and comfort level for the study route are estimated and found to be …
Designing A Work-Friendly Tax System, Jonathan Barry Forman
Designing A Work-Friendly Tax System, Jonathan Barry Forman
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] "Taxes tend to influence individual choices between labor and leisure, and high effective marginal tax rates on earned income tend to discourage work. In particular, the empirical evidence shows that high effective marginal tax rates tend to discourage work by low- and moderate-income individuals, especially those that are trying to work their way out of the welfare system. Unfortunately, the current federal tax system often imposes its highest effective marginal tax rates on just those individuals. The purpose of this paper is to suggest some simple ways to reduce those high effective marginal tax rates. One approach would be …

Monénembo's L'Aîné Des Orphelins And The Rwandan Genocide, Lisa Mcnee
Monénembo's L'Aîné Des Orphelins And The Rwandan Genocide, Lisa Mcnee
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her paper, "Monénembo's L'Aîné des orphelins and the Rwandan Genocide," Lisa McNee discusses Tierno Monénembo's L'Aîné des orphelins, a novel that offers a double discourse and a dual memory of the genocide that took place in Rwanda in 1994. McNee argues that L'Aîné des orphelins presents us with an extraordinary kind of fictional testimonial to genocide. Although Monénembo is not from Rwanda and did not participate in the tragedy, only someone who has paid the price of the clarity needed to distinguish between good and bad faith could have written a novel like L'Aîné des orphelins. Monénembo's characterization of …
What Legal Scholars Can Learn From Law And Economics, Anthony Ogus
What Legal Scholars Can Learn From Law And Economics, Anthony Ogus
Chicago-Kent Law Review
The starting point of this Article is Richard Posner's statement of regret (in 1975) that, in terms of legal scholarship, "normative analysis vastly preponderates over positive," and that this can be corrected by the economic analysis of law. I consider that the positive, predictive contribution of law and economics is still undervalued. Lawyers, practitioners and academics, have much to learn from economic analysis because so often they fail to understand the nature of the interaction between law and market phenomena. This Article explores three areas of analysis to justify this contention: the interplay between public and private incentive systems to …
Catholic High School Students’ Attitudes Toward Homosexuality: A Snapshot Of Incoming College Freshmen, Michael J. Maher
Catholic High School Students’ Attitudes Toward Homosexuality: A Snapshot Of Incoming College Freshmen, Michael J. Maher
Journal of Catholic Education
This study is a survey of incoming freshmen at a Midwestern Catholic university on their agreement with Church teachings on homosexuality. In general, females had more homo-positive attitudes than males, graduates of Catholic high schools had more homo-positive attitudes than graduates from non-Catholic high schools, and graduates from coeducational Catholic high schools had more homo-positive attitudes than graduates from unisex Catholic high schools. Also, if respondents agreed with the Church’s teaching against homosexual activity and that homosexuality is a disorder, they were less likely to agree with the Church’s teachings that gay and lesbian people have rights that the Church …

Predictors Of Participation In Premarital Prevention Programs: The Health Belief Model And Social Norms, Kieran T. Sullivan, Lauri A. Pasch, Tara Cornelius, Ellen Cirigliano
Psychology
The development of effective programs to prevent marital dysfunction has been a recent focus for marital researchers, but the effective dissemination of these programs to engaged couples has received relatively little attention. The purpose of this study is to determine which factors predict couples' participation in premarital counseling. Predictive factors were derived from the health prevention literature, with a particular focus on the health belief model (HBM). Couples' beliefs and attitudes about premarital counseling were assessed at least six months before their wedding, and participation was assessed after their wedding. Results indicate that the strongest predictors of couples' participation were …
Nutrition Education For Persons With Disabilities, Jada A. Miller
Nutrition Education For Persons With Disabilities, Jada A. Miller
Masters Theses
This study provides descriptive information about the dietary knowledge and intake of community-based young adults who have been diagnosed with a number of disabilities. A nutrition education curriculum was implemented for the Experimental group (N=9) and at a later date for the Delayed Intervention group (N=9). Results indicated that the three-week nutrition education curriculum produced moderate improvement in participants' nutritional knowledge and moderate improvement in nutritional value of foods chosen from a menu. However, the intervention proved to have a negligible effect on the nutritional value of foods consumed within this population of individuals.
Based on the results of this …
Pediatric Amputations: Ptsd, Behavioral Tendencies And Quality Of Life, Adriana Macias Chamorro
Pediatric Amputations: Ptsd, Behavioral Tendencies And Quality Of Life, Adriana Macias Chamorro
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The present study examined children and adolescents between 11-18 years of age who had experienced traumatic amputations due to an acute physical injury (burns, severing, and crushing accidents). In order to account for variance which may have impacted the results of the study, evaluations were conducted between a group of children/adolescents with amputations and a comparison group of children/adolescents who had been hospitalized due to a non-head injury, non-death motor vehicle accident. The goal of this study was to assess symptoms of PTSD, provide a description of the internalized and externalized behaviors, and examine the quality of life (QOL)(health habits, …
