Middle School Student Responses To Family Health Questions: The Effects Of Family Caregiving On The Education Of Middle School Students With Family Health Issues, Constance T. Siskowski Jul 2004

Middle School Student Responses To Family Health Questions: The Effects Of Family Caregiving On The Education Of Middle School Students With Family Health Issues, Constance T. Siskowski

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

More than currently recognized, family health situations, often compounded with family caregiving responsibilities, affect students' learning and academic performance. Three out of five middle school children (n=3,848) from a large, socio-economically and culturally diverse population sample, responded to the 88-question What Works Survey conducted in 2002, and indicated that someone needing special medical care lived either with them or close by them. Nearly two of five of these students (38.6%) documented that their learning is hindered as a result of their family health/caregiving situation. Among students with family health situations who reported hindered learning, only students who are Asian-Pacific Islanders …

'Who Are You?': Alien/Woman As Posthuman Subject In Alien Resurrection, Ximena Gallardo C. Jul 2004

'Who Are You?': Alien/Woman As Posthuman Subject In Alien Resurrection, Ximena Gallardo C.

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editors' Introduction]

Traditionally considered a monster in outer space series, the four films comprising the Alien saga: Alien, Aliens, Alien3, and Alien Resurrection, contain a vision of the Alien creature as an agent of human evolution that, taken to its logical extreme in Alien Resurrection, produce an uncommon posthuman subject: the Alien/Woman protagonist named Ripley. In the following article, Ximena Gallardo C. explores the introduction of the series' conception of human evolution through fusion with the Alien as a driving theme in Alien. It then briefly follows through Aliens and Alien3, …

Schizophrenics, Cyborgs And The Pitfalls Of Posthumanism, Angela Woods Jul 2004

Schizophrenics, Cyborgs And The Pitfalls Of Posthumanism, Angela Woods

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editors' Introduction]

In Schizophrenics, Cyborgs and the Pitfalls of Posthumanism, Angela Woods invites us to revisit two canonical analyses of the postmodern: Fredric Jameson's Postmodernism, or The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism and Donna Haraway's A Manifesto for Cyborgs: Science, Technology and Socialist Feminism in the 1980s. Jameson and Haraway introduced to contemporary cultural criticism two posthumanist icons: the schizophrenic, a pathologized victim of postmodernity, and the cyborg, a vision of strategic posthuman subjectivity. In her timely and critical analysis of these articles, Woods challenges the established notion of an oppositional relationship between the schizophrenic and the cyborg. She turns …

X-Men, Emerson, Gnosticism, Geoff Klock Jul 2004

X-Men, Emerson, Gnosticism, Geoff Klock

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editors' Introduction]

Continuing his work in How to Read Superhero Comics and Why Geoff Klock, in “X-Men, Emerson, Gnosticism,” argues that two writers of the superhero comic book the X-Men suggest a whole new definition of the Post-Human, an alternative to what Hayles, Haraway, and Moravec have to offer. He begins by connecting a moment in Mark Millar’s Ultimate X-Men with a passage in Ralph Waldo Emerson: an ancient heretical second-century sect of Christianity called Gnosticism is the common factor. Klock argues that Millar’s X-Men incorporates Gnosticism’s radical notion of subjectivity into its Post-Human narrative, but not without cost: Millar’s …

Nato Technology: From Gap To Divergence?, Donald C. Daniel Jul 2004

Nato Technology: From Gap To Divergence?, Donald C. Daniel

Defense Horizons

A widening technology gap between the United States and other NATO members will challenge the ability of NATO to function as a cohesive, multinational force. Over several decades, great disparities in the funding of defense research and technology by NATO members has produced a widening technological gap that threatens to become a divergence—a condition from which the Alliance may not be able to recover. The technology gap, in turn, is creating a capabilities gap that undercuts the operational effectiveness of NATO forces, including the new NATO Response Force.

With only slight modifications (not additions) to current total defense expenditures, and …

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Self-Management As A Form Of Behavior Modification, Erica M. Predmore Jul 2004

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Self-Management As A Form Of Behavior Modification, Erica M. Predmore

Theses and Dissertations

Behavior management is a major concern among educators. Effective practices for managing behavior are constantly being studied and tested. This research study focuses on self-management as an effective form of behavior modification in an inclusive classroom. This study is to determine if a self-management form of behavior modification will increase self-awareness which will in turn decrease disruptive behavior in the classroom. An intervention is implemented to determine its effect on the behaviors being studied. A goal of this study is also to contribute more findings on the effectiveness of self-management to the current research.

Parent-Teacher Communication Methods: Which Ones Do Teachers Utilize, And Why?, Jennifer Ann Clipper Jul 2004

Parent-Teacher Communication Methods: Which Ones Do Teachers Utilize, And Why?, Jennifer Ann Clipper

Theses and Dissertations

Studies have shown that parental involvement has positive effects on education. Further, parents are more likely to become involved if they are kept up-to-date with student progress; however, in order for parents to know this information, effective communication needs to be maintained. This study used a survey instrument with open-ended and closed-ended responses (Likert scale) as well as teacher interviews. The sample included fifty teachers in an upper elementary school in southern New Jersey. These respondents' answers helped to determine which methods of home-school communication are currently in use, which are perceived as most effective, and how much time is …

Why School Culture Both Attracts And Resists Whole School Reform Models, Bobbie J. Greenlee, Darlene Y. Bruner Jul 2004

Why School Culture Both Attracts And Resists Whole School Reform Models, Bobbie J. Greenlee, Darlene Y. Bruner

Essays in Education

This paper uses the metaphor of "grafting" to describe the relationship of comprehensive school reform designs to the work culture of schools. One school reform model that has widespread implementation is the Success for All (SFA) reading program. The new practice provided in the SFA reading program offered a compatible "graft" onto the existing culture found in low achieving schools. The grafting on of a new program can only occur as long as its requirements do not stray from the existing traditions of the system. Schools adopt reform programs that offer procedural or curricular changes that fit within their existing …

The Influence Of Positive Performance Appraisal Ratings And Regulatory Focus On Motivation To Improve Or Maintain Performance, C. Allen Gorman Jul 2004

The Influence Of Positive Performance Appraisal Ratings And Regulatory Focus On Motivation To Improve Or Maintain Performance, C. Allen Gorman

Student Work

The present study was designed to test the anecdotal supposition that excellent performance appraisal ratings do not motivate employees to improve or maintain performance as much as good performance appraisal ratings. Self-regulatory focus theory (Higgins, 1997, 1998) predicts that high levels of motivation are induced either by failure under prevention focus or by success under promotion focus. Using a 2 x 2 completely randomized design, this study examined the effects of regulatory focus and performance appraisal ratings on motivation to improve or maintain performance. Research participation credit was used to manipulate regulatory focus, and bogus performance feedback was used to …

Assuring Excellence, Or Merely Reassuring - Policy And Practice In Promoting Mediator Quality, Charles Pou Jr. Jul 2004

Assuring Excellence, Or Merely Reassuring - Policy And Practice In Promoting Mediator Quality, Charles Pou Jr.

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Mediation practice in the United States has grown substantially over the last two decades, as has the number of people offering to serve as mediators. This growth has led some to argue that competency standards are needed to protect consumers and promote the integrity of mediation processes. While professionals and researchers have tried over the past fifteen years or so to define "what mediators do" and better understand "how to do it well," alternative dispute resolution (ADR) programs, roster administrators, and parties seeking neutrals have had to make day-to-day choices.

Re-Constructing The Image Of The Voluntarily Childfree: An Ethnographic Exploration Of Media Representation And The Childless By Choice, Eddy Sass

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, like most other parts of the world, there is a commonly held belief that all capable couples should have children. This belief has contributed to the development of a pro-natalist ideology or concept that having children is good. This pronatalist belief tends to spill over into the media, as well. Yet, there are those individuals who do not subscribe to the parenthood belief structure and to the manner in which the media frame the parenthood debate. These people are known as the voluntarily childfree or the childless by choice. This thesis is an exploratory ethnographic examination …

Rui Barbosa And The Argument For Teaching The Natural Sciences In The Brazilian Primary School Of The Xix Century, Karl M. Lorenz Jul 2004

Rui Barbosa And The Argument For Teaching The Natural Sciences In The Brazilian Primary School Of The Xix Century, Karl M. Lorenz

Education Faculty Publications

The paper discusses the ideas of Rui Barbosa on the importance of teaching science in the primary schools of nineteenth-century Brazil. Barbosa was one of the great parliamentarians of his time and one of Brazil’s most vocal advocates of educational reform in the nineteenth century. In 1882, Barbosa was directed to provide a written assessment of the1878 educational reform of Minister Leonçio de Carvalho. In the document that resulted, Barbosa states his rationale for why and how the natural sciences should be taught in the primary school. This paper relates Barbosa’s ideas on science teaching and argues that he was …

Idiomatic Expressions And Marital Relationships Over Three Stages Of The Family Lifespan, Meredith T. Raynor Jul 2004

Idiomatic Expressions And Marital Relationships Over Three Stages Of The Family Lifespan, Meredith T. Raynor

Institute for the Humanities Theses

In interpersonal communication language shared between two people becomes important in the everyday life of relational participants. Even more so, the language shared between married couples is vital because of their "unique relationship". Part of that language involves the symbols, gestures and words called idioms that have specialized meaning for the marital dyad.

This thesis sought to discover what idioms are identified among married couples at three stages of the family lifespan, newlyweds, couples with children and empty nest couples as they seek to maintain a system of "personalized communication" as it relates to their marital satisfaction (Breuss & Pearson, …

The Effect Of Humor On Elderly Well-Being, Mary M. Boone Jul 2004

The Effect Of Humor On Elderly Well-Being, Mary M. Boone

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The main objectives of this study were to identify the connections between the sense of humor and well-being in the elderly population, examine the benefits of humor as a coping mechanism, explore the role of humor as a preventative and therapeutic measure, and to attempt to gain a greater understanding of these connections. Humor has been the focus of study within many different domains, including psychology and medical research (immunology, pain management, cardiology, and psychoneuroimmunology), but there is a distinct lack of theory and research within the sociological realm on this topic (except in social psychology), especially involving the aging …

Childcare Arrangements As Related To Perceptions Of Job Stress Work-Family Conflict And Parenting Stress, Joy B. Wright Jul 2004

Childcare Arrangements As Related To Perceptions Of Job Stress Work-Family Conflict And Parenting Stress, Joy B. Wright

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Sixty-nine male and 40 female full-time employees of the Ford Motor company completed a survey assessing the relationships between satisfaction with childcare (i.e., overall satisfaction with childcare, satisfaction with cost, satisfaction with provider, satisfaction with hours of operation, and satisfaction with location) and overall stress, job stress, work-family conflict, and parenting stress. Although most respondents were satisfied with the child's provider, and moderately satisfied with their childcare arrangements overall and with the location of their childcare, the typical respondent was dissatisfied with the cost of childcare and neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with the hours of operation. Job stress was correlated …

An Empirical Study Of Highly Personal Topics Involved In Self-Disclosure, Alicia Monique Mathews Jul 2004

An Empirical Study Of Highly Personal Topics Involved In Self-Disclosure, Alicia Monique Mathews

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Self-disclosure refers to what individuals reveal about themselves to others. This topic has been a focus of research by social psychologists, communication scientists and others for several decades. The current study aims to contribute to research in this area by examining the topics of self-disclosure of college students. Archival data previously collected from college students were used. Research participants were asked to recall a highly personal experience when answering questions about their self-disclosure behaviors dealing with the targets of mother, father, same-sex friend and dating partner. The study developed a taxonomy of topics that were identified by college students as …

Euthanasia: An Exploration Of Public Opinion, Debra M. Babylon Jul 2004

Euthanasia: An Exploration Of Public Opinion, Debra M. Babylon

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The acceptance of euthanasia is examined using the 1972-2002 GSS cumulative dataset. The dataset contains a total of 43,698 respondents. The euthanasia question, "Should a terminally ill patient be allowed the right to die?" was asked beginning in 1977. The number of respondents answering the euthanasia question totals 22,039. The independent variables age, race, gender, political view, religious affiliation, and education were reviewed to assess their impact on support of euthanasia. Additionally, in order to test the "slippery slope" hypothesis, the abortion question, "Should abortion be allowed under any circumstance?" was added to the independent variable list. Cross tabulation was …
