The Impact Of A Goal Setting Procedure On The Work Performance Of Young Adults With Behavioral/Emotional/Learning Challenges, Robin Wagner Hogsholm Jul 2004

The Impact Of A Goal Setting Procedure On The Work Performance Of Young Adults With Behavioral/Emotional/Learning Challenges, Robin Wagner Hogsholm

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The population consisting of young people with Behavioral/Emotional/Learning challenges typically experiences poorer outcomes related to employment, in part due to lower performance levels. Effective strategies, which have a positive impact on work performance for this population, are needed. Goal setting has been used to bring about behavior change, or increase 'motivation', in many fields of study. Goal setting can be conceptualized as an establishing operation (EO), which increases the reinforcing value of goal achievement, and thereby increases the probability of the occurrence of behaviors related to reaching the goal, i.e., task completion. This study empirically examined the impact of a …

An Analysis Of Travel Trends Of The Elderly And Zero-Vehicle Households In The United States, Ravi Kiran Gorti Jul 2004

An Analysis Of Travel Trends Of The Elderly And Zero-Vehicle Households In The United States, Ravi Kiran Gorti

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The elderly and persons residing in zero vehicle households require better transportation services by virtue of their need for special care and lack of mobility, respectively. An analysis of the travel trends of these population cohorts is essential to determine the best ways to improve transportation facilities to better serve them. Information about location of residence, life-cycle, differences by gender, employment status, driver status, highest level of education coupled with trip information like trip rate, travel times and distances trip purpose, modal split and percent of people immobile will facilitate understanding the factors that influence trip making among these people …

Anatomy And Function Of The Nucleus Accumbens In The Pigeon (Columba Livia), Scott Alan Husband Jul 2004

Anatomy And Function Of The Nucleus Accumbens In The Pigeon (Columba Livia), Scott Alan Husband

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Relatively little is known about the existence and traits of a possible nucleus accumbens (Acc) region in non-mammals. The current project investigated a likely candidate for such a structure in pigeons, the medioventral (mvMSt) and mediodorsal (mdMSt) parts of avian medial striatum (MSt). The methods employed were threefold: 1) tract-tracing to determine anatomical connections of the MSt; 2) lesion studies to assess MSt's role in a cognitive task (reversal learning); and 3) measuring an immediate-early gene induced protein, ZENK, in striatal regions during courtship behavior in male pigeons.

The MSt was found to have many forebrain (amygdala, hippocampus, dorsal thalamus) …

On Effective And Efficient Experimental Designs For Neurobehavioral Screening Tests: The Choice Of A Testing Time For Estimating The Time Of Peak Effects, Peter A. Toyinbo Jul 2004

On Effective And Efficient Experimental Designs For Neurobehavioral Screening Tests: The Choice Of A Testing Time For Estimating The Time Of Peak Effects, Peter A. Toyinbo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In its latest neurotoxicity guidelines released by the US EPA Office of Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances (OPPTS) in 1998, it is recommended that in a neurobehavioral testing, at a minimum, for acute studies, observations and activity testing should be made before the initiation of exposure, at the estimated TOPE (time of peak effects) within 8 hrs of dosing, and at 7 and 14 days after dosing. It is recommended that estimation of TOPE be made by dosing pairs of rats across a range of doses and making regular observations of gait and arousal. However it is well known that …

In The Minds Of Men: A Theory Of Compliance With The Laws Of War, William C. Bradford Jul 2004

In The Minds Of Men: A Theory Of Compliance With The Laws Of War, William C. Bradford

ExpressO

Whether, and, if so, why states elect to comply with international law are now the most central questions within the international legal academy. A skein of theories has been woven over the last decade to explain and predict state compliance, and a number of factors, including, inter alia, a desire to generate reciprocity, an interest in reducing transaction costs, normative commitments, domestic considerations, the degree of domestic incorporation of international legal regimes, reputational concerns, and fear of punishment, are purported to be causally linked.

However, as the study of international legal compliance ["ILC"] has matured, intramural divisions have been compounded …

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

CLAGS joins other LBGT groups in condemning the sexual humiliation and other forms of torture inflicted on Iraqi detainees by US military forces. As the AI-Fatiha Foundation for LGBTIQ Muslims noted in a press release last month, "forcing men to masturbate in front of each other and to mock same-sex acts or homosexual sex is perverse and sadistic, in the eyes of many Muslims."

Consideration Of Protective Legislation On Family And Residential Care For Older Persons In Hong Kong, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, Chao Li Jul 2004

Consideration Of Protective Legislation On Family And Residential Care For Older Persons In Hong Kong, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, Chao Li

APIAS Working Paper 工作論文

Older persons, like all members of any society, have the right to be free from mistreatment at family care and residential care. Furthermore, older persons are the special collectiveness, different from children or other adults, so elder abuse or neglect is a more complicated issue. Protective legislation aiming at protecting older persons from possible mistreatment as one of the various intervention approaches is essential. By analyzing the pros and cons in applying the legislation on institutional care (i.e. family and residential places) in Hong Kong, for three case examples, plus referencing to China’s experience, the goals and contents of the …

Web Logs And Online Discussions As Tools To Promote Reflective Practice, Pedro F. Hernández-Ramos

Teacher Education

This article reports on the use of Web logs (“blogs”) and online discussion forums in an instructional technology course in a teacher preparation program. Key goals behind the use of these tools included exposure for students to computer-supported communication and collaboration, encouragement of reflective practice, and a better understanding of the pedagogical and learning benefits derived from integration of these technologies. Management and assessment challenges for instructors derived from the volume of writing, as well as pedagogical considerations, are noted. Some of the issues raised led to a call for improvements in the tools and for additional research in a …

Developers, Users And Consumers Beware: Warnings About The Design And Use Of Psycho-Behavioural Rating Inventories And Analyses Of Data Derived From Them, Ken Rowe, Kathy Rowe Jul 2004

Developers, Users And Consumers Beware: Warnings About The Design And Use Of Psycho-Behavioural Rating Inventories And Analyses Of Data Derived From Them, Ken Rowe, Kathy Rowe

2004 - The International Test Users' Conference

Psycho-behavioural rating inventories are used routinely by psychologists and psychiatrists as assessment instruments to assist with the evaluation and ‘diagnosis’ of children and adolescents. They are also used in epidemiological studies to obtain normative/prevalence estimates of children/adolescents with psycho-behavioural ‘problems’. Advantages entailed in their use include ease of administration and the convenience of obtaining estimates of normative behaviours from large numbers of informants. However, serious decisions are frequently made on the basis of ‘measures’ obtained from such instruments, including the labelling of a child as ‘pathologic’, subsequent referral to intervention therapy services, and prescription of medication by a physician. This workshop …

Quality Of Performance And Change-Sensitive Assessment Of Cognitive Ability, Gale H. Roid Jul 2004

Quality Of Performance And Change-Sensitive Assessment Of Cognitive Ability, Gale H. Roid

2004 - The International Test Users' Conference

Growth and change are fundamental processes in human development. Recent trends in education, psychology, medicine, and other fields have stimulated renewed interest in methods of measuring developmental growth and change (Collins & Sayer 2001). Educators and governmental agencies have recently placed greater emphasis on the importance of growth in reading as foundational to student learning (Torgesen 2002).A major review of the regulations is underway in the United States, concerning funding of special education in public schools (e.g., President’s Commission on Excellence in Special Education 2002) and the emphasis has been on ‘continuous progress’ assessment and accountability for student learning (e.g., …

Multivariate Volatility And Spillover Effects In Financial Markets, Bernardo Veiga, Michael Mcaleer Jul 2004

Multivariate Volatility And Spillover Effects In Financial Markets, Bernardo Veiga, Michael Mcaleer

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The relationship between volatility and risk has been one of the main factors underlying the interest in volatility modelling. An important question for international diversification is whether shocks in one market influence, or have spillovers into, returns and volatility in other markets. This paper tests for the existence of volatility spillovers among the SandP 500, FTSE 100 and Nikkei 225 stock indexes using intra-daily data from 12/10/1992 to 7/7/2003. Existing work is extended through the application of the vector autoregressive moving average asymmetric generalised autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (VARMA-AGARCH) model of Chan, Hoti and McAleer (2002). The results suggest the presence …

A Model Of The Biocomplexity Of Deforestation In Tropical Forest: Caparo Case Study, Raquel Quintero, Rodrigo Barros, Jacinto Dávila, Niandry Moreno, Giorgio Tonella, Magdiel Ablan

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper presents some preliminary results with a multi-agents modeling approach to understand the complexity of deforestation in tropical forests. The approach was applied to the study of the deforestation of the Caparo Forest Reserve, in the western part of Venezuela. The model includes, among others, the following types of agents: several instances of settlers, government and lumber concessionaries. Settler agents represent people of limited economical resources that occupied land of the reserve with the aims of improving their socio-economical status and obtaining in the future the property of the occupied land. They use subsistence agriculture and they try to …

Linking Health, Secondary Conditions And Employment Outcomes, Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute Jul 2004

Linking Health, Secondary Conditions And Employment Outcomes, Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Employment

Health is important to securing and maintaining employment, but for many low-income or unemployed people access to health promotion programs is limited. This is a problem for many people with disabilities who do not work and who rely on Medicare or Medicaid to cover their healthcare costs. Without access to programs that promote health and reduce secondary conditions, people with disabilities may find it difficult to get a job or stay employed. This may be a factor in this group’s persistently high unemployment rates. Participation in worksite health promotion programs has been shown to (1) increase employee productivity through reduced …
