Irbism: Prejudice Against Institutional Review Boards, Donelson R. Forsyth Oct 2004

Irbism: Prejudice Against Institutional Review Boards, Donelson R. Forsyth

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Alexander Pope, who opined that "the proper study of man is man," did not have to convince an Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the wisdom of his words. Just this week I was told that I could not use the question "What city does your romantic partner live in?" to check if the subject was in a long-distant relationship (made the partner too identifiable). Earlier in the year a reviewer objected to asking students about their mother and father's parenting style (reports on the behavior of unconsented third parties). When I said I would recruit participants from classes, the reviewer …

Future Perspectives On Employee Selection: Key Directions For Future Research And Practice, Neil Anderson, Filip Lievens, Karen Van Dam, Ann Marie Ryan Oct 2004

Future Perspectives On Employee Selection: Key Directions For Future Research And Practice, Neil Anderson, Filip Lievens, Karen Van Dam, Ann Marie Ryan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A future-oriented perspective for selection and assessment research is presented. Four superordinate themes of critical import to the development of future research are identified: (i) bimodal prediction, (ii) multilevel fit, (iii) applicant reactions and decision making, and (iv) tensions between research and practice in employee selection. Under each theme we pose a number of outstanding questions for research. Implications for practice and the ongoing advancement of the sub-field of selection, traditionally one of the most robust core disciplines in international IWO psychology, are discussed.

There are a number of issues facing those who wish to employ learning objects to facilitate learning. These issues are not, however, inherent in the component-based paradigm. The first section of this paper describes some of the most difficult issues to be resolved. In the second section, we present a model of the use of learning objects that is grounded in a object-based paradigm. In the third section, we describe the …

The Paradox Of Promoting Creativity In The Asian Classroom: An Empirical Investigation, Aik Kwang Ng, Ian Smith Oct 2004

The Paradox Of Promoting Creativity In The Asian Classroom: An Empirical Investigation, Aik Kwang Ng, Ian Smith

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

To shed light on the paradox of promoting creativity in the Asian classroom, the authors conducted 3 studies. The 1st study found that novice teachers classified student behaviors as desirable but uncreative (DBU) versus creative but undesirable (CBU). The 2nd study found that conservative-autocratic teachers were more likely to encourage DBU behaviors in class, whereas liberal-democratic teachers were more likely to encourage CBU behaviors in class. The 3rd study found that cultural individualism—collectivism had a positive impact on liberal—democratic teaching attitude but a negative impact on conservative—autocratic teaching attitude. In turn, liberal—democratic teaching attitude had a positive impact on the …

Feminism, Law, And Public Policy: Family Feuds And Taxing Times, Susan B. Boyd, Claire F. L. Young Oct 2004

Feminism, Law, And Public Policy: Family Feuds And Taxing Times, Susan B. Boyd, Claire F. L. Young

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article offers a retrospective analysis of feminist research on tax and family law and developments in these fields since the early 1980s. We identify the sometimes contradictory trends-both in legislation and in case law-that raise questions about the influence that feminist research has had on these areas of law. We then flag some ongoing challenges confronting feminists engaged in law reform efforts. Some common themes will emerge, but notable differences are also evident in the ways that feminist thought has played out in tax and family law.

Combating Cry Wolf: The Effects Of Urgency And Reliability On Reactions To Verbal Alarms, Corey K. Fallon Oct 2004

Combating Cry Wolf: The Effects Of Urgency And Reliability On Reactions To Verbal Alarms, Corey K. Fallon

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Previous research has shown that manipulating the acoustic features of auditory alarms can alter their perceived urgency. Research has shown that increasing the perceived urgency of nonverbal auditory alarms can significantly improve response degradation due to alarm mistrust. This study determined if the effect of perceived urgency on response performance also applies to verbal alarm systems. Forty graduate and undergraduate psychology students from Old Dominion University were sampled for this study. The experimenter examined participant performance during four experimental sessions. After each session a twelve-item questionnaire designed to measure participants'rust in the alarm system was administered. Two conditions of urgency …

Problem-Focused Coping: Mediating The Link Between Personality And Work-Family Conflict, Lisa M. Germano Oct 2004

Problem-Focused Coping: Mediating The Link Between Personality And Work-Family Conflict, Lisa M. Germano

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Past work-family research has focused on the general antecedents and outcomes associated with work-family conflict. Recent research has demonstrated that certain individual differences predispose some to experience more work-family conflict. In addition, there is a growing recognition that research needs to move beyond explaining only the causes and effects of work-family conflict and should consider strategies for coping with conflict. The proposed research addressed these gaps in the work-family literature by examining the relationships between the Big Five factors of personality, proactive personality, problem-focused coping, and work-family conflict. This study analyzed a sample of 178 employees from a mid-sized financial …

Application Of Queuing Theory And Procedure Time Estimation In A Local Healthcare System, Galina Tsoy Oct 2004

Application Of Queuing Theory And Procedure Time Estimation In A Local Healthcare System, Galina Tsoy

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

People in the United States pay more for their basic healthcare needs than do people in any other nation in the world. When we consider that the United States is the wealthiest nation in the world, controlling the majority of the world's resources, it seems only reasonable to ask: Why should it be this way?

In an effort to address this problem, this thesis examines two possible methods of improving health care efficiency in hospitals. The thesis is thus in two parts: the first part examines resource allocation in medical units using Queuing Theory, and the second part examines a …

Job Satisfaction In Nonprofit Organizations: The Factors That Influence Employee Job Satisfaction At Goodwill Industries Of Greater Grand Rapids, Inc., Andrea L. Speers

Masters Theses

Research shows there are several variables that influence employee job satisfaction, including salary, benefits, job tasks, autonomy and independence, relationships with supervisors and coworkers, communication from management, vacation time, and professional development opportunities. Nonprofit organizations face increased challenges with employee job satisfaction issues because they lack the budget to be competitive with for-profit organizations in terms of salary and benefits.

For the purpose of this study, the researcher defines "hard" variables as those that are concrete and can be measured, including salary and benefits, and “soft” variables as those that are less measurable and more relational in nature, including relationships …
