A Survey Of Pattern Classifier Research, Donald Comer, Lisha Li Jan 2004

A Survey Of Pattern Classifier Research, Donald Comer, Lisha Li

Faculty Publications

This paper is a survey of research on pattern classifier. In particular, it emphasizes on the different types of pattern classifiers and their performance factors. Pattern classifiers use the algorithms of pattern recognition to classify various input classes into their respective categories. Recently many algorithms for pattern classifiers have been proposed. However no study of the normalized performance of pattern classifier has been done. Based on the implementation methods, in general there are three types of pattern classifiers: I.C. based, optical based, and software based using general-purpose computers. Advantages, disadvantages, and performance factors of each classifiers is discussed in this …

Dynamic Spill Monitoring: A Coordinated Approach, Peter Jones, James K. Archibald, Randal Beard, Matthew Blake Jan 2004

Dynamic Spill Monitoring: A Coordinated Approach, Peter Jones, James K. Archibald, Randal Beard, Matthew Blake

Faculty Publications

Sponsorship: INEEL. This paper presents a coordinated control strategy for autonomous monitoring of a dynamically changing hazardous spill. The control strategy is a two level hierarchy that uses use coordination variables to communicate between the levels. The upper level is a resource allocator. The lower level consists of several "commanders" each with a possibly different objective. A physical description of the problem is given, as well as the methods of spill modeling and simulation. Tactics for locating, gravitating to and circling the spill are presented. Finally, both simulation and hardware results are given.

Integrating Perception, Language And Problem Solving In A Cognitive Agent For A Mobile Robot., Deryle W. Lonsdale, D. Paul Benjamin, Damian M. Lyons Jan 2004

Integrating Perception, Language And Problem Solving In A Cognitive Agent For A Mobile Robot., Deryle W. Lonsdale, D. Paul Benjamin, Damian M. Lyons

Faculty Publications

We are implementing a unified cognitive architecture for a mobile robot. Our goal is to endow a robot agent with the full range of cognitive abilities, including perception, use of natural language, learning and the ability to solve complex problems. The perspective of this work is that an architecture based on a unified theory of robot cognition has the best chance of attaining human-level performance.

This agent architecture is an integration of three theories: a theory of cognition embodied in the Soar system, the RS formal model of sensorimotor activity and an algebraic theory of decomposition and reformulation.

These three …

American Fatherhood Types: The Good, The Bad, And The Uninterested, Loren Marks, Rob Palkovitz Jan 2004

American Fatherhood Types: The Good, The Bad, And The Uninterested, Loren Marks, Rob Palkovitz

Faculty Publications

This paper presents four contemporary types of American manhood: (a) the new, involved father, (b) the good provider, (c) the deadbeat dad, and (d) the paternity-free man. These four types are compared, contrasted, and contextualized with related data from the classic Middletown studies of the 1920s and 1930s. The significance and implications of the trend toward paternity-free manhood are discussed, and directions for future research are suggested.
