Comparisons Of Mortality And Pre-Discharge Respiratory Outcomes In Small-For-Gestational-Age And Appropriate-For-Gestational-Age Premature Infants., Puneet Sharma, Kathleen Mckay, Ted S Rosenkrantz, Naveed Hussain Jun 2004

Comparisons Of Mortality And Pre-Discharge Respiratory Outcomes In Small-For-Gestational-Age And Appropriate-For-Gestational-Age Premature Infants., Puneet Sharma, Kathleen Mckay, Ted S Rosenkrantz, Naveed Hussain

SoM Articles

BACKGROUND: There are differences in the literature regarding outcomes of premature small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and appropriate-for gestational-age (AGA) infants, possibly due to failure to take into account gestational age at birth.

OBJECTIVE: To compare mortality and respiratory morbidity of SGA and AGA premature newborn infants.

DESIGN/METHODS: A retrospective study was done of the 2,487 infants born without congenital anomalies at

RESULTS: Controlling for GA, premature SGA infants were at a higher risk for mortality (Odds ratio 3.1, P = 0.001) and at lower risk of respiratory distress syndrome (OR = 0.71, p = 0.02) than AGA infants. However multivariate logistic regression …

Health Management & Policy

Background: The high rates of relapse that tend to occur after short-term behavioral interventions indicate the need for maintenance programs that promote long-term adherence to new behavior patterns. Computer-tailored health messages that are mailed to participants or given in brief telephone calls offer an innovative and time-efficient alternative to ongoing face-to-face contact with healthcare providers.

Methods: Following a 1-year behavior change program, 22 North Carolina health departments were randomly assigned to a follow-up intervention or control condition. Data were collected from 1999 to 2001 by telephone-administered surveys at preintervention and postintervention for 511 low-income, midlife adult women enrolled …

Environmental Protection And Microenterprise Development In The Developing World: A Model Based On The Latin American Experience, Mark D. Wenner, Norman Wright, Abhishek Lal Jun 2004

Environmental Protection And Microenterprise Development In The Developing World: A Model Based On The Latin American Experience, Mark D. Wenner, Norman Wright, Abhishek Lal

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Microenterprises constitute the vast majority of business firms in low- and middle-income developing countries. In Latin America, the sector contributes significantly to employment and gross domestic product. Recently, the expansion of microlending programs has been viewed as an effective means of developing the microenterprise sector and alleviating poverty. However, the nexus between microenterprise development and environmental degradation has remained largely unexplored. It is suspected that the pervasive informality of the microenterprise sector, its sheer size, and the high incidence of poverty in the sector contribute to cumulative environmental degradation and low standards of occupational safety. This paper highlights commonly observed …

Use Of By-Products In Growing Dairy Heifer Diets, K. F. Kalscheur, A. D. Garcia Jun 2004

Use Of By-Products In Growing Dairy Heifer Diets, K. F. Kalscheur, A. D. Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The goals of a heifer-feeding program are to reach a target freshening weight by 24 months of age or less, to improve feed efficiency and reduce costs, and to do this while allowing the animals to express their full genetic potential for milk production. Feed costs remain the single largest expense in raising dairy heifers; therefore, a feed cost reduction that does not sacrifice production improves net income. Feed costs may be reduced by the use of locally available by-product feeds. Nutritional composition of by-product feeds, however, may vary from the animal’s nutritional requirements, making the incorporation of such feeds …

Anabolic Agents: Adjuncts To Nutrition Support, Jane M. Gervasio

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

Anabolic agents as adjuncts to nutrition support therapy have been used to improve malnutrition and establish anabolism. Growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor, and anabolic steroids have been studied for their potential to reverse the catabolic process and promote anabolism. This paper reviews several anabolic agents and their possible role in nutrition support therapy.

Deconstructing Development, Ruth E. Gordon, Jon H. Sylvester Jun 2004

Deconstructing Development, Ruth E. Gordon, Jon H. Sylvester

Working Paper Series

Whether it is being praised or excoriated, defended or condemned, the concept of development shapes and dominates our thinking about the Third World. Indeed development has evolved into an essentially incontestable paradigm with such a hold on our collective imaginations, that it is almost impossible to think around or beyond it. This article, however, interrogates development to its very core, demonstrating that although it is presented as something that is universal, natural and inevitable, in truth it is part of the Western political and cultural imagination. Moreover, the interlocking ideological assumptions that support this paradigm are inherently hierarchical and by …

Early Head Start: Identifying And Serving Children With Disabilities, Carla Peterson, Shavaun Wall, Helen Raikes, Ellen E. Kisker, Mark E. Swanson, Judith Jerald, Jane B. Atwater, Wei Qiao

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Early Head Start (EHS) is a comprehensive, two-generation program that provides services to low-income families with children under the age of 3 years. As part of their mandate, staff members of EHS programs collaborate with other service providers in their local communities, including Part C and childcare providers. The incidence of disabilities among low-income children was tracked as part of the EHS Research and Evaluation Project. The incidence of indicators of disabilities (or potential disabilities) was extremely high (87%) among these very young children living in poverty; however, only 99 participating families (4.7% of the sample) received Part C services. …

Missouri's Interfacing Of The First Amendment And Right Of Publicity: Is The Predominant Purpose Test Really That Desirable, Michael S. Kruse

Missouri Law Review

Many jurisdictions have struggled with the difficult question of how they should interface the interest of a celebrity in his or her right of publicity and the interest society holds in the freedom of artistic expression. The United States Supreme Court has not definitively addressed this issue, and, as a result, the approach to dealing with these types of First Amendment claims varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. This Note examines how the Missouri Supreme Court recently confronted this issue. To appreciate the court's analysis, it is important to understand the interests that the right of publicity seeks to protect and …

No Harm, No Rule: The Muddy Waters Of Agency Policy Statements And Judicial Review Under The Missouri Administrative Procedure Act, Christopher Pieper

Missouri Law Review

The volume and variety of actions state and federal agencies take to implement a given regulatory scheme sometimes makes it difficult for courts to determine the difference between informal agency policy statements and formal agency rules. The Missouri Supreme Court dealt with this issue in the context of a challenge to a state agency’s implementation of the federal Clean Water Act. The court held that Missouri’s impaired waters list was an agency policy statement, rather than a rule, and that the challenge to the list was not ripe. This Note will examine the potential impact of the court’s decision on …

The Sound Of Silence: Social Work, The Academy, And Iraq, Scott Harding Jun 2004

The Sound Of Silence: Social Work, The Academy, And Iraq, Scott Harding

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Despite the imposition of economic sanctions against Iraq in 1990, the social work academy has ignored the impact of this global social policy promoted by the international community. Though evidence existed for more than 10 years that sanctions contributed to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of children and other vulnerable groups in Iraq, while also crippling the nation's health care and social infrastructure, the profession has remained silent. The implications of this case study suggest a need for greater engagement by social work researchers and the profession on global issues.
