Epa Project-Level Research Strategies For Chemical Mixtures: Targeted Research For Meaningful Results, Linda K. Teuschler, Richard C. Hertzberg, Glenn E. Rice, Jane Ellen Simmons Jan 2004

Epa Project-Level Research Strategies For Chemical Mixtures: Targeted Research For Meaningful Results, Linda K. Teuschler, Richard C. Hertzberg, Glenn E. Rice, Jane Ellen Simmons

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Project-level research strategies at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regarding chemical mixtures are impacted by administrative priorities, public interests, expert opinions, scientific advances, regulatory needs, and legislative actions, influencing the setting of priorities and goals. Perhaps, the most significant influence on conducting chemical mixtures research is the passage of laws requiring the EPA to investigate the potential toxicity of various mixtures, specifically the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980, the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996, and the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1996. Scarce resources are allocated to broadly defined issues for consideration by teams …

Nutritional Condition Of Northern Yellowstone Elk, Rachel Cook, John G. Cook, L. David Mech Jan 2004

Nutritional Condition Of Northern Yellowstone Elk, Rachel Cook, John G. Cook, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We estimated nutritional condition for 96 female northern Yellowstone elk (Cervus elaphus nelson) during mid-to late winter 2000, 2001, and 2002. Neither year nor capture location significantly influenced any measure of condition (body fat, body mass, and longissimus dorsi thickness; P ≥ 0.14). Overall, age = 8.9 years ± 0.4 SE, body fat = 9.5% ± 0.4, body mass = 235.1 kg ± 2.2, and longissimus dorsi muscle thickness = 5.6 cm ± 0.1. Despite an age segregation pattern across the winter range (P = 0.016), we found no evidence of bias in our estimates of nutritional condition …

Role Of The Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (Gnrh) Receptor In Determination Of Ovulation Rate Between Lines Of Swine, Benjamin E. Bass, Ginger A. Mills, Brett R. White Jan 2004

Role Of The Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (Gnrh) Receptor In Determination Of Ovulation Rate Between Lines Of Swine, Benjamin E. Bass, Ginger A. Mills, Brett R. White

Nebraska Swine Reports

Litter size plays a major role in the economics of swine production. Even modest increases in average litter size can have considerable effects on overall profitability. Two major components of litter size, 1) ovulation rate, and 2) embryonic survival, have been used in a selection index project ongoing for several generations at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). To better understand the mechanisms of one component, ovulation rate, we are investigating the role of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor in determination of this important trait. Although other factors may influence determination of ovulation rate, this receptor has an established physiological importance …

Back To The Future: The Future Of Long-Term Care In Massachusetts, Deborah H. Thomson, John J. Ford Jan 2004

Back To The Future: The Future Of Long-Term Care In Massachusetts, Deborah H. Thomson, John J. Ford

Gerontology Institute Publications

The state of Massachusetts, like the rest of the United States, is facing an approaching crisis in long-term care. Over the next few decades the number of Massachusetts residents age 65 and older will soar. As these numbers increase, so will the need for long-term care.

Massachusetts is ill prepared to provide the services that will be needed. Our current system of health care benefits leaves many elders with gaps in coverage. Those individuals who need long-term services often impoverish themselves and their spouses before the state pays for their care. Others languish on waiting lists to receive services. Our …

Ecomorphology Of The Temperate Scleractinian Astrangia Poculata: Coral-Macroalgal Interactions In Narragansett Bay, Sean Patrick Grace Jan 2004

Ecomorphology Of The Temperate Scleractinian Astrangia Poculata: Coral-Macroalgal Interactions In Narragansett Bay, Sean Patrick Grace

Open Access Dissertations

Corals and macroalgae often co-occur on temperate reefs, where macroalgae provide a majority of the bio-complexity and small scleractinian corals occur in low abundance. Macroalgae typically outcompete adjacent organisms for resources such as space, light, and nutrients, and one mechanism for this competitive success is abrasion. This study explores factors that may influence the interactions between corals and macroalgae, in particular macroalgal abrasion, on a temperate reef in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. Chapter One examines how exposure, depth and orientation influence the abundance and morphology of the coral Astrangia poculata, as well as the percent cover of macroalgae and other …

Culture Of Summer Flounder Paralichthys Dentatus: Environmental And Endocrine Synchronization Of Growth And Settlement In Larvae And Identification Of Stressors In Juveniles, Steven Gavlik

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the variability in settlement behavior, growth and development during metamorphosis of summer flounder. There were three objectives: (1) Expand basic knowledge of hormonal and environmental factors that regulate timing of metamorphosis, (2) develop hormonal and environmental techniques that promote synchronization of metamorphic growth and settling behavior in order to eventually reduce cannibalism in juveniles, and (3) identify stressful culture practices and evaluate their long-term effects on growth in juvenile flounder. The first and second objectives were accomplished through manipulations of cortisol and thyroxine and of rearing salinity. Endogenous whole-body cortisol concentrations increased through the late larval stages, …

Dollars And Death, Cass R. Sunstein, Eric A. Posner Jan 2004

Dollars And Death, Cass R. Sunstein, Eric A. Posner

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Administrative regulations and tort law both impose controls on activities that cause mortality risks, but they do so in puzzlingly different ways. Under a relatively new and still-controversial procedure, administrative regulations rely on a fixed value of a statistical life representing the hedonic loss from death. Under much older law, tort law in most states excludes hedonic loss from the calculation of damages, and instead focuses on loss of income, which regulatory policy ignores. Regulatory policy also disregards losses to dependents; tort law usually allows dependents to recover for loss of support. Regulatory policy generally treats the loss of the …

The Regulation Of Git1 Transcription In Response To Nutritional Factors, Wei Cheng Jan 2004

The Regulation Of Git1 Transcription In Response To Nutritional Factors, Wei Cheng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Glycerophosphoinositol is produced through deacylation of the essential phospholipid phosphatidylinositol. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, when inositol is limiting in the extracellular environment, the glycerophosphoinositol can be transported into the cell through the permease encoded by GIT1 . In this study, Northern blotting and GIT1 promoter activity were analyzed to assess the nutritional factors responsible for the regulation of GIT1 transcription. Here, I report that GIT1 transcript levels are greater in cells starved for phosphate, with or without inositol limitation, than in cells only limited for inositol. Ino2p and Ino4p are required for full GIT1 expression when the medium lacks both inositol …

Development Of A Biochemical Probe For Arsenate Respiring Bacteria Using Bacillus Selenitireducens Strain Mls10, Mirunalni Thangavelu Jan 2004

Development Of A Biochemical Probe For Arsenate Respiring Bacteria Using Bacillus Selenitireducens Strain Mls10, Mirunalni Thangavelu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To date, eighteen phylogenetically diverse prokaryotes have been found to utilize arsenic as the terminal electron acceptor in anaerobic respiration, converting arsenate into the more toxic and mobile arsenite. This process can lead to ground water contamination, making it imperative to detect in situ, active arsenate-respiring prokaryotes.

A biochemical probe that targets the catalytic subunit (ArrA) of the respiratory arsenate reductase (Arr) from Bacillus selenitireducens strain MLS10 was developed. Polyclonal antibodies were raised against a fifteen amino acids long highly conserved sequence at the C-terminus of ArrA. Highly specific antibodies obtained by affinity purification using the synthesized ArrA polypeptide, reacted …

Development, Research And Validation Of Environmental Speciation Methods; And Evaluation By Speciated Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry In Mercury And Chromium Speciation Analysis, G. M. Mizanur Rahman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The toxicity of an element depends upon its chemical forms, which also gives vital information for samples and their relevance. A sequential extraction method for mercury speciation in soil and sediments was established based on the mobility and toxicity of different mercury species and was proposed as a draft US EPA Method 3200. In order to finalize the method, an interlaboratory validation study was performed, and the final results verified the applicability of the method. Some of the widely used mercury speciation methods were evaluated during this study and the results were compared with those obtained from EPA draft Method …

Aging, Health, And Public Policy: Demographic And Economic Perspectives, Linda J. Waite Jan 2004

Aging, Health, And Public Policy: Demographic And Economic Perspectives, Linda J. Waite

Population Policy and Demographic Analysis

In this supplement to Population and Development Review, distinguished social scientists bring a variety of disciplinary perspectives—economic, demographic, epidemiological—to bear on the subject of population aging, looking particularly to likely future trends and their economic consequences. Among the questions investigated: What can be said about the future course of longevity, given that research on both historical and contemporary populations belies the existence of a biologically fixed maximum for the human life span? To what extent do genetic factors contribute to the development of major chronic diseases of later life, such as Alzheimer’s? How can we unravel the strong positive …

Close to three billion people-half of the world's population-live on less than two dollars a day.' Within these poor communities, one child in five will not live to see his or her fifth birthday. To boost international development, the United Nations (UN) announced the Millennium Development Goals, aimed at eradicating poverty by 2015.? A number of countries responded at the International Conference for Financing International Development in Monterrey, Mexico, by creating action plans to begin to implement the Millennium Development Goals.4 Yet the Millennium Development Goals will prove difficult to achieve.1
