Children And Television : A Literature Review Of The Influence Of Television On Children From 1970-2000, Lisa Suwalski
Children And Television : A Literature Review Of The Influence Of Television On Children From 1970-2000, Lisa Suwalski
Honors Capstones
This review focused on television's influences on children in the period from 1970 to 2000. This review is important because of the explanations it presents for the arguments made by numerous researchers about the effects of television on society, and how the influence changed society from 1970 to 2000. A valuable aspect of this review was that if television was considered a medium that changes, and was continually refined, why did only certain issues catch the attention of researchers? Often, in each separate decade, similar types of influences of television on children arose and were repeatedly studied by the researchers. …

Section III will look at the newly enacted Medicare Prescription Drug and Modernization Act, and state and local government plans to import cheaper brand-name prescription drugs from Canada. Section IV will look at the United States' international support for compulsory …
Community Impacts Of Coastal Tourism In The Dominican Republic, Yolanda M. Leon
Community Impacts Of Coastal Tourism In The Dominican Republic, Yolanda M. Leon
Open Access Dissertations
The present work presents the results of survey research conducted in 23 coastal communities of the Dominican Republic to evaluate the impacts of tourism and also the evaluation of a particular co-management system of a tourism-related activity (whale watching in Samaná Bay). Major findings include that tourism is having a positive impact on rural livelihoods as measured by increased household income, and higher levels of job satisfaction (and in the case of female-headed households, also improved material well-being). We also evidenced strong local support for the tourism industry caused by wide agreement on perceived tourism benefits; however, residents are also …

On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Brief, I will reflect on what I perceive to be the changes necessary for legal education and discuss the role of human rights in that process.
Analysis Of Demographic Variables And Levels Of Stress In Law Enforcement Officers, Kathleen M. Jansen
Analysis Of Demographic Variables And Levels Of Stress In Law Enforcement Officers, Kathleen M. Jansen
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Employment in a law enforcement profession exposes an individual to potential stressors not experienced in most other professions. Sporadic efforts have been made to design stress management programs to assist officers in coping with the demands of their jobs. Much of the previous research on law enforcement stress has focused on examining the effectiveness of various coping skills; however, the training has focused on teaching a healthy lifestyle. This study seeks to add to the existing research by examining what elements of the job are perceived as the most stressful and what demographic variables, if any, may influence an individual's …

Expert Systems are computer programs that use artificial intelligence to solve problems within a specialized domain that ordinarily requires human expertise. A very important aspect of helping mycologist with diagnosis of the mushroom health effects is the identification itself by using only the visible feature of the mushroom. Their identification, although very important, is often difficult. This thesis addresses this problem by providing an expert system that takes into consideration various factors about the mushroom, and presents identification as a possible solution. In order to achieve the purpose, the system uses Prolog, a logic programming. In this paper, chapter one …

Diel Activity Patterns, Space Utilization, Seasonal Distribution And Population Structure Of The Yellow Stingray, Urobatis Jamaicensis (Cuvier, 1817) In South Florida With Comments On Reproduction., Daniel P. Fahy
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
The yellow stingray, Urobatis jamaicensis is the most common elasmobranch in the coastal waters of Southeast Florida. Despite their common occurrence the ecology of yellow stingrays remains poorly understood. In particular, yellow stingray daily movements, space utilization, seasonal distribution and population structure have not been described. This study was conducted to address the lack of knowledge of these fundamental life history parameters and to provide further information on the ecology of U. jamaicensis in coastal waters of Broward County, Florida.
The activity patterns and space utilization of U. jamaicensis were assessed by manual tracking with ultrasonic telemetry. Telemetry tracking of …
A Comparative Evaluation Of The Cost Effectiveness Of Treating The Metabolic Syndrome In African Americans And The General Population, Joseph T. Tasosa
A Comparative Evaluation Of The Cost Effectiveness Of Treating The Metabolic Syndrome In African Americans And The General Population, Joseph T. Tasosa
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
The Metabolic Syndrome poses an important public health threat to the U.S. health care delivery system. Disparate access to quality health care makes African Americans (blacks) especially susceptible to the adverse effects of MS. Although direct evidence suggests that early treatment of MS risk factors saves lives, no study to date has compared the cost effectiveness of such measures in blacks and the general population. Interventions that promote early treatment of MS risk factors may improve public health but could also lead to excess costs that are ultimately borne by society. The objective of this study was to assess the …
Part I: Evaluation Of Russian Synthetic Compounds As A Potential Source Of New Drug Leads Agains Breast And Colon Cancer Part Ii: Isolation Of Beta-Amyrin Formate From Eucalyptus Viminalis Labill And Investigation Of Its Colon Cancer Activity, Mihaela Cohanoschi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although modern medicine made great steps toward curing most diseases considered deadliest, yet cancer remains one of the major public health problems. The first part of this thesis investigates a new source of selective compounds that are potential candidates against cancer. Fifteen Russian compounds were tested in order to establish their efficiency against two types of cancer: human breast SK-Br-3 and colorectal carcinoma HT-29. The bioassay results show that seven of the new synthetic Russian compounds can be considered new drug leads, based upon their low toxicity and efficacy in slowing the growth of human breast cancer and colon cancer …

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A clinical trial was conducted to evaluate effects of two intervention strategies on the prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 shedding by feedlot steers using 384 steers and 48 pens. Intervention strategies were a direct fed microbial or vaccination against E. coli O157:H7. No differences in performance or carcass yield were observed for direct fed microbial or vaccination treatments, compared to the control. Vaccination significantly reduced the prevalence of E. coli O157:H7. In addition, we also observed a non-significant decrease in the prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 with inclusion of the direct fed microbial.

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Eighteen spring-calving heifers were paired by expected calving date and assigned to treatment. Treatments were a high undegradable intake protein supplement (CON) or one based on dry corn gluten feed (TRT). Heifers were fed to consume low-quality hay ad libitum. Supplement type did not affect body condition, milk production, or calf ADG. TRT heifers lost less weight than CON heifers. There was no effect of supplement on forage intake. Intake changed cubically with respect to calving; decreasing 17% during the three weeks prior to calving, and increasing 18% the week after calving.

Consumer Preference And Value Of Beef With Country-Of-Origin Labeling, Bethany M. Sitz, Chris R. Calkins, Wendy J. Umberger, Dillon M. Feuz
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
The 2002 Farm Bill mandates country- of-origin labeling for beef and other items by 2004. A majority (69.2%) of consumers in Denver and Chicago preferred a fresh beef strip steak with a label guaranteeing the meat came from a U.S. animal over an unlabeled steak. On average, consumers were willing to pay 18.7% more ($0.81/lb) for labeled product. When 17 attributes were rated for their desirability when purchasing beef, country-of- origin labeling ranked ninth; “freshness” and “inspected for food safety” were the most popular selection criteria. Food safety concerns were the primary reason consumers preferred beef labeled with country of …

The high school where I teach houses many vending machines. A vending machine resides in every comer of the school known to me, and I think there are some machines in areas that I don't frequent. It's a big school, after all. Kids can buy candy, hot and spicy chips that tum their tongues red, Pop-Tarts, Pepsi (not Coke, though) and a variety of other so-called foods, none of which have nutritional value. Kids without much money have discovered a machine with a large pastry called a "Big Texas" (as in "I got me my Big Texas") for 65 cents. …
