The Representation Of African American Students In Programs For The Mild Mentally Retarded, Peter Laurance Gennaro

Theses Digitization Project

For more than thirty years, it has been acknowledged that African American students have been over-represented in programs designed for individuals with mild mental retardation (MMR). This project was designed to explore the history and literature of the research that has been conducted on this subject over the past three decades. Additionally, this project was undertaken to determine if over-representation of African American students in programs for the mild mentally retarded is a condition that exists in Riverside County, California.

The Relation Between Autonomy-Based Rights And Profoundly Mentally Disabled Persons, Norman L. Cantor Jan 2004

The Relation Between Autonomy-Based Rights And Profoundly Mentally Disabled Persons, Norman L. Cantor

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

A chapter from his forthcoming book "Deciding for the Profoundly Mentally Disabled," Professor Norman Cantor argues persuasively for the right of incompetent persons to have a surrogate make critical medical decisions on their behalf, particularly in the context of refusing life-sustaining treatment. While abusive surrogate decisionmaking is always a concern, Professor Cantor recommends both substantive and procedural protections in order to preserve intrinsic human dignity for the profoundly disabled.

The Impact Of Traditional Shona Beliefs On Hiv/Aids Intervention Work In Zimbabwe, Brian Goercke Jan 2004

The Impact Of Traditional Shona Beliefs On Hiv/Aids Intervention Work In Zimbabwe, Brian Goercke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between secondary students in the rural and peri-urban areas of Mashonaland in Zimbabwe and their tendencies to agree or disagree with traditional Shona attitudes, beliefs and practices as they related to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. A convenience, cluster sample was used to identify the 482 students who participated in this study. A questionnaire composed of demographics, hypothetical and open-ended questions was administered to these students within the regular classrooms of their respective schools.

A notable finding in this study was that traditional Shona beliefs appear to be stronger in the rural areas. However, the students surveyed …

Nf04-609 Proper Light Management For Your Home Laying Flock, Chad Zadina, Sheila Scheideler Jan 2004

Nf04-609 Proper Light Management For Your Home Laying Flock, Chad Zadina, Sheila Scheideler

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Raising a home flock for the primary purpose of producing fresh eggs can be a rewarding and challenging venture. The main goal for egg producers is to ensure that their hens continue to produce eggs year-round. To accomplish this goal, one of the most important factors to consider, next to the overall health and nutrition of the flock, is lighting. This NebGuide discusses what a producer must do to manage proper lighting for the home laying flock.

Pressure Ulcer Development And Prevention In Long-Term Care Facilities In Virginia: A Descriptive Survey, Audrey D. Arthur Jan 2004

Pressure Ulcer Development And Prevention In Long-Term Care Facilities In Virginia: A Descriptive Survey, Audrey D. Arthur

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

The development of pressure ulcers is a common occurrence among older persons who may be temporarily immobilized or confined to a bed. An estimated 60,000 deaths annually can be attributed to complications from pressure ulcers. Guidelines recommended by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research have been disseminated nationally and continue to be recommended as the standard of care for pressure ulcer prevention. In spite of the use of the recommended guidelines, pressure ulcer rates persist, suggesting there are other factors contributing to pressure ulcer development in long-term care facilities.

A survey was conducted to investigate which provider related …

High Levels Of Fluctuating Asymmetry In Populations Of Apodemus Flavicollis From The Most Contaminated Areas In Chornobyl, Taras K. Oleksyk, James M. Novak, James R. Purdue, Sergiy P. Gashchak, Michael H. Smith Jan 2004

High Levels Of Fluctuating Asymmetry In Populations Of Apodemus Flavicollis From The Most Contaminated Areas In Chornobyl, Taras K. Oleksyk, James M. Novak, James R. Purdue, Sergiy P. Gashchak, Michael H. Smith

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Random deviations from the perfect symmetry of normally bilaterally symmetrical characters for an individual with a given genotype occur during individual development due to the influence of multiple environmental factors. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is often used as a measure of developmental instability, and can be estimated as the variance of the distribution of differences between the left and right sides. We addressed the question of whether levels of FA were elevated in radioactively contaminated populations living around Chornobyl compared to those in reference populations of the yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis). In addition, we studied amounts of directional asymmetry (DA) when …

The Impact Of Placement In Special Care Unit Settings On The Wellbeing Of Young People And Their Families, Niall Hanlon, Centre For Social And Educational Research, Louise Riley Jan 2004

The Impact Of Placement In Special Care Unit Settings On The Wellbeing Of Young People And Their Families, Niall Hanlon, Centre For Social And Educational Research, Louise Riley

Reports

The Special Residential Services Board, established under Part 11 of the Children Act 2001, commissioned the Centre for Social and Educational Research to carry out this study into the Impact of Placement in Special Care Unit Settings on the Wellbeing of Young People and Their Families. Special Care Units are a relatively new part of the child care system in Ireland. They are facilities that provide a secure environment for young people who require protection because of a real and substantial risk to their health, safety, development or welfare. At the time the work for this report was carried out, …

Dairies And Local Economic Development, Alvaro Garcia, Kenneth Kalscheur Jan 2004

Dairies And Local Economic Development, Alvaro Garcia, Kenneth Kalscheur

SDSU Extension Fact Sheets

This fact sheet is one in a series intended to answer — with science-based land-grant university research — questions frequently asked by the public about issues and needs affecting agricultural growth, urban expansion, and rural community development in South Dakota. During 2002, the year with latest available USDA figures, livestock production in South Dakota represented 50.7% of total agricultural cash receipts, followed by 42.4% for crops and 6.9% for government payments. Dairy products, at $178,176,000, were fifth of all agricultural cash receipts and were a highly significant portion of the state’s economy. In light of possible dairy expansion in the …

Animals And Alternatives: Societal Expectations And Scientific Need, Alan M. Goldberg Jan 2004

Animals And Alternatives: Societal Expectations And Scientific Need, Alan M. Goldberg

Experimentation Collection

As Russell and Burch suggested more than 40 years ago, the most humane science is the best science. The path ahead is clear: pain and distress must be eliminated in animal experiments or reduced to an absolute minimum, and, as scientists, we must use the most humane approaches in our research. To accomplish the best science, we must train those who come after us in the principles and practice of humane science.
