The Health Belief Model And Factors Relating To Potential Use Of A Vaccine For Shigellosis In Kaeng Koi District, Saraburi Province, Thailand, Piyarat Butraporn, Alfred Pach, Robert P. Pack, Rungwit Masngarmmeung

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Shigellosis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Approximately, 1.1 million deaths occur a year due to this disease, making it the fourth leading cause of mortality worldwide. This paper explores local interest in and potential use of a vaccine for shigellosis in Thailand where Shigella poses an important public-health concern. Data for this study were collected during June- November 2002 from 522 subjects surveyed using a sociobehavioural questionnaire in Kaeng Koi district in central Thailand. The community demand and likely use of a vaccine were examined in relation to the Health Belief Model, which provides …

Forest Fragmentation And The Distribution, Abundance And Conservation Of The Tana River Red Colobus ( Procolobus Rufomitratus), David N.M. Mbora, Douglas B. Meikle Jan 2004

Forest Fragmentation And The Distribution, Abundance And Conservation Of The Tana River Red Colobus ( Procolobus Rufomitratus), David N.M. Mbora, Douglas B. Meikle

Biology

Evidence suggests that habitat heterogeneity, disturbance, disease, predation and food resources influence primate population abundance. However, few studies have focused on what habitat factors determine the probability that a primate species will occur in a habitat fragment. We analysed forest habitat and colobus population attributes to determine factors that influenced occurrence and abundance of the critically endangered Tana River red colobus. The probability of colobus inhabiting forests was positively related to the relative amount of habitat edge and canopy tree species composition. Most of the variance in the density of colobus monkeys was explained by basal area of food trees …

Physiological And Growth Responses Of Midrotation Loblolly Pine To Treatments Of Fire, Herbicide, And Fertilizer, Emily J. Goodwin, Lisa M. Marino, Hans H. Williams, Brian P. Oswald, Kenneth W. Farrish Jan 2004

Physiological And Growth Responses Of Midrotation Loblolly Pine To Treatments Of Fire, Herbicide, And Fertilizer, Emily J. Goodwin, Lisa M. Marino, Hans H. Williams, Brian P. Oswald, Kenneth W. Farrish

Faculty Publications

The objectives of this study were to examine the effects of fertilizer and understory vegetation control (herbicide and prescribed fire) on mature tree physiology and to link observed physiological responses with tree growth. Photosynthetic rate (photosynthesis), transpiration, stomatal conductance, stem diameter, and crown area were measured in two midrotation loblolly pine plantations in East Texas. Rates of photosynthesis, E and gs for the midsummer measurements were significantly reduced by fertilizer treatments on both sites. Drought in east Texas during the last 3 years may have influenced this result. Trees receiving fire at the site with a comparatively more dense live …

Identification Of Trace Element-Containing Proteins In Genomic Databases, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Gregory V. Kryukov, Dmitri E. Fomenko, Dolph L. Hatfield Jan 2004

Identification Of Trace Element-Containing Proteins In Genomic Databases, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Gregory V. Kryukov, Dmitri E. Fomenko, Dolph L. Hatfield

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Development of bioinformatics tools provided researchers with the ability to identify full sets of trace element–containing proteins in organisms for which complete genomic sequences are available. Recently, independent bioinformatics methods were used to identify all, or almost all, genes encoding selenocysteine-containing proteins in human, mouse, and Drosophila genomes, characterizing entire selenoproteomes in these organisms. It also should be possible to search for entire sets of other trace element–associated proteins, such as metal-containing proteins, although methods for their identification are still in development.

Contagious Vs. Environmental Mastitis, Alvaro Garcia Jan 2004

Contagious Vs. Environmental Mastitis, Alvaro Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Mastitis is an inflammation of the udder caused by microorganisms that enter the gland through the teat canal. Once inside the gland, these organisms find ideal conditions in which to multiply and, in turn, to damage the lining of the milk ducts, cistern, and alveoli. As a result, the cow’s immune response is triggered, and white blood cells travel to the udder to fight the infection. This results in increased somatic cell counts. The organisms responsible for this infection can be broadly classified into two groups: contagious and environmental.

The Political Economy Of Entitlement, David A. Super Jan 2004

The Political Economy Of Entitlement, David A. Super

Faculty Scholarship

Debates over “entitlements” have lacked conceptual clarity because the term has at least six analytically distinct meanings. The psychological “entitlements” that many attack are distinct from the legalistic “entitlements” that others champion. Most importantly, however, entitlements are economic concepts. A benefit provided to all claimants meeting state eligibility requirements can be termed a “responsive entitlement”; its antithesis is a program that arbitrarily caps participation. Similarly, a program whose benefits are defined by the amount required to accomplish some specific purpose is a “functional entitlement; it may be juxtaposed with one providing only an arbitrary sum. The market through which public …

The Quiet "Welfare" Revolution: Resurrecting The Food Stamp Program In The Wake Of The 1996 Welfare Law, David A. Super Jan 2004

The Quiet "Welfare" Revolution: Resurrecting The Food Stamp Program In The Wake Of The 1996 Welfare Law, David A. Super

Faculty Scholarship

Cash-assistance programs have long been a focus of both liberal and conservative efforts to make symbolic statements. In this regard, the 1966 dismantlement of federal entitlement to cash assistance was nothing new. Although the 1996 welfare law also made deep cuts to in-kind programs, such as food stamps, these programs had less symbolic significance and hence were less often the target of public attacks. This lower political profile gave the Food Stamp Program room to find positive ways to adapt to the key themes that drove the enactment of the 1996 welfare law. In the 1996 welfare law’s wake, the …

A Perfect Storm: Mercury And The Bush Administration, Rena I. Steinzor, Lisa Heinzerling

Faculty Scholarship

In December 2003, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed a rule for mercury emissions from power plants and issued a final rule for mercury emissions from chlor-alkali facilities. Regarding power plants, EPA had previously found that mercury posed the most serious threat among the hazardous air pollutants emitted by power plants, and also that regulation of mercury from power plants was appropriate and necessary under section 112 of the Clean Air Act, which requires stringent technology-based regulation for hazardous air pollutants. Despite section 112's clear rejection of emissions trading as a compliance option, EPA has proposed to allow commercial trading …

The Surgical Infection Society Guidelines On Antimicrobial Therapy For Intra-Abdominal Infections: An Executive Summary, John E. Mazuski, Robert G. Sawyer, Avery B. Nathens, Joseph T. Dipiro, Moshe Schein, Kenneth A. Kudsk, Charles Yowler

Publications from the Office of the Dean

The Surgical Infection Society last published guidelines on antimicrobial therapy for intra-abdominal infections in 1992 (Bohnen JMA, et al., Arch Surg 1992;127:83-89). Since then, an appreciable body of literature has been published on this subject. Therefore, the Therapeutics Agents Committee of the Society undertook an effort to update the previous guidelines, primarily using data published over the past decade. An additional goal of the Committee was to characterize its recommendations according to contemporary principles of evidence-based medicine. To develop these guidelines, the Committee carried out a systematic search for all English language articles published between 1990 and 2000 related to …

The Surgical Infection Society Guidelines On Antimicrobial Therapy For Intra-Abdominal Infections: Evidence For The Recommendations, John E. Mazuski, Robert G. Sawyer, Avery B. Nathens, Joseph T. Dipiro, Moshe Schein, Kenneth A. Kudsk, Charles Yowler

Publications from the Office of the Dean

Revised guidelines for the use of antimicrobial therapy in patients with intra-abdominal infections were recently developed by the Therapeutic Agents Committee of the Surgical Infection Society (Mazuski et al., Surg Infect2002;3:161-173). These were based, insofar as possible, on evidence published over the past decade. The objective of this document is to describe the process by which the Committee identified and reviewed the published literature utilized to develop the recommendations and to summarize the results of those reviews. English-language articles published between 1990 and 2000 related to antimicrobial therapy for intra-abdominal infections were identified by a systematic MEDLINE search and …

The Use Of Ergogenic Aids Among High School Athletes In Eastern Kentucky, John Robert Brandenburg Jan 2004

The Use Of Ergogenic Aids Among High School Athletes In Eastern Kentucky, John Robert Brandenburg

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A fifteen-question survey was developed to study the use of over-the counter nutrition supplements by high school athletes in eastern Kentucky. Athletic trainers from four local high schools were given one hundred permission forms and surveys. After two weeks only a small number (n=25) completed the requirements to participate in the study. The twenty-five participants consisted of male (n=15) and female (n=10). The athletes with the highest frequency of supplement use were football players (67.7%). The supplements with the highest use were protein powders (n=13) and creatine monohydrate (n=9).

Roles Of Pkc Isozymes In Retinoic Acid-Induced B16 Mouse Melanoma Cell Growth Inhibition And Differentiation, Jianming Han Jan 2004

Roles Of Pkc Isozymes In Retinoic Acid-Induced B16 Mouse Melanoma Cell Growth Inhibition And Differentiation, Jianming Han

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Protein Kinase C (PKC) has been implicated in many cellular responses. Of the 11 isotypes in this family, seven are expressed in B16 mouse melanoma cells − PKCα, PKCδ, PKCε, PKCθ, PKCλ, PKCζ, and PKCµ.

Treatment of B16 cells with retinoic acid (RA) results in growth inhibition and differentiation. Simultaneously, RA induces a 6-8 fold increase of PKC α protein level, but only about 2-fold increase of PKC enzyme activity. The over- expression of wild type PKCα in B16 cells mimicked the action of RA. The over- expression of enzymatically inactive PKCα, either open or closed conformation, also inhibited B16 …
