The Health Care Safety Net In South Carolina: A Test Of Tenacity, Jennifer Ryan, Randy Desonia
The Health Care Safety Net In South Carolina: A Test Of Tenacity, Jennifer Ryan, Randy Desonia
National Health Policy Forum
This site visit to the state of South Carolina provided an opportunity to experience and understand the unique makeup of the health care safety net in a southern state. Site visitors had the opportunity to interact with health care providers, state officials, faith-based organizations and leaders of provider-driven volunteer initiatives. They also learned about the challenges of access to care in rural areas and among diverse population groups. The group visited the Sea Island Medical Center and Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach and Wellness House; a migrant farm worker camp on Johns Island; and a “medical home” site, Medical …

Effects Of Forage Nutritional Quality (Energy And Protein) On Deer Acceptance Of Foods Containing Secondary Metabolites, Dale L. Nolte, Bruce A. Kimball, Kelly R. Perry, Juan J. Villalba, Frederick D. Provenza
Effects Of Forage Nutritional Quality (Energy And Protein) On Deer Acceptance Of Foods Containing Secondary Metabolites, Dale L. Nolte, Bruce A. Kimball, Kelly R. Perry, Juan J. Villalba, Frederick D. Provenza
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Deer foraging on tree seedlings is recognized as the most widespread detriment to reforestation efforts. Non-lethal approaches to reduce deer damage to seedlings are highly desirable. Avoidance of natural secondary metabolites contained in conifers may provide feasible means to develop non-lethal measures. Other studies have demonstrated that sheep and goats fed diets with high protein-to-energy ratios, or allowed to select between concentrates high in either energy or protein, ate much more of a high-terpene diet and of a high-tannin diet than when they were fed diets high in energy-to-protein ratios. Thus, manipulating foraging options for deer may impact their ability …
Characterization Of Legume Starches And Their Noodle Quality, Wen-Chieh Sung, Martha Stone
Characterization Of Legume Starches And Their Noodle Quality, Wen-Chieh Sung, Martha Stone
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Physicochemical properties of starches isolated from Colorado grown legumes (chick peas, peanut beans, and pinto beans) were studied to find a feasible, less expensive source for making starch noodles. Surfactants, monoglycerides of fatty acids and sodium stearoyl lactylate at 0.5% of starch weight, were also combined with raw starch to prepare starch noodles. Cooking qualities of pinto bean and peanut bean starches were inferior to those of mung bean and/or chick pea starch noodles. Although mung bean starch is used commercially for making starch noodles, functional characteristics and sensory results on chick pea starch noodles show that chick peas are …

Assessor Effects On The Evaluation Of The Wisc-Iii, Sherecce A. Fields
Assessor Effects On The Evaluation Of The Wisc-Iii, Sherecce A. Fields
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There have been many theories about cultural differences found between groups on intelligence test scores. The main debate has been between those in favor of a genetic explanation versus those in favor of a more environmental one. When considering environmental influences, one explanation has been that there could be differential effects due to the assessor. Although there have been several studies that have considered this possibility, the results are inconclusive. The current study attempted to tease apart the assessor effects by focusing on biases in the assessor alone and by eliminating effects from the test taker. The study is an …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Data from the first four cycles of the Germplasm Evaluation Program at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) were used to investigate genetic relationships between mature weight (MW, n = 37,710), mature weight adjusted for body condition score (AMW, n = 37,676), mature height (HT, n = 37,123), and BCS (n = 37,676) from 4- to 8-yr old cows (n = 1,800) and carcass traits (n = 4,027) measured on their crossbred paternal half-sib steers. Covariance components among traits were estimated using REML. Carcass traits were adjusted for age at slaughter. Estimates of heritability for hot carcass weight (HCWT); …
