A Study Of Overrepresentation Of Minorities In Special Education In Southern New Jersey Public Schools, Carol Phister May 2004

A Study Of Overrepresentation Of Minorities In Special Education In Southern New Jersey Public Schools, Carol Phister

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if there is an overrepresentation of minority students in special education in southern New Jersey Public Schools. Data was disaggregated to the district level for 25 randomly chosen public school districts in southern New Jersey. Data were reported on the total school population and the total number of students classified as eligible for special education. These data were further broken down in both categories (i.e. total school population and special education) by race/ethnicity and by gender. In addition, special education data were also reported by specific disability category. These data were presented …

Eating Disorder Symptomatology Among Alaska Native/American Indian And Caucasian Female University Students In The Extreme North, Miranda R. Saunders May 2004

Eating Disorder Symptomatology Among Alaska Native/American Indian And Caucasian Female University Students In The Extreme North, Miranda R. Saunders

Psychology

The purpose of this study was to explore differences in eating disorder symptomatology among a matched sample of 100 Alaska Native/American Indian and Caucasian female university students, using a demographic instrument and the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26). Four (8.0%) Native participants and ten (20.0%) Caucasian participants met or exceeded the EAT-26 cutoff score indicative of clinically significant eating disorder symptomatology. There were no significant differences found among the Native and Caucasian participants with regard to eating disorder symptomatology. Rather, eating disorder symptomatology was present in both Native and Caucasian female college students at rates similar to that of previous studies.

An Investigation Of Soil-Plant And Plant-Animal Mineral Nutrition Landscapes Of Agricultural Areas In The Fairbanks And Delta Junction Regions Of Interior Alaska, Robin N. Andrews May 2004

An Investigation Of Soil-Plant And Plant-Animal Mineral Nutrition Landscapes Of Agricultural Areas In The Fairbanks And Delta Junction Regions Of Interior Alaska, Robin N. Andrews

Plant, Animal and Soil Sciences

I attempted to identify biologically limiting minerals and assess mineral variability by collecting soil and plant samples in June, July, and August from 14 bromegrass fields and adjacent woodlands, in the Fairbanks and Delta Junction regions. Soil extractable P, K, Ca, Mg, Al, B, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn, NO⁻³ and NH⁴ as well as pH and organic matter content were measured at three depths. Bromus inermis, Calamagrostis canadensis, Epilobium angustifolium and Salix alaxensis were analyzed for N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Al, B, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn. Plant sample variability was assessed by …

K8 And K12 Are Biotinylated In Human Histone H4, Gabriela Camporeale, Elizabeth E. Shubert, Gautam Sarath, Ronald Cerny, Janos Zempleni

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Folding of DNA into chromatin is mediated by binding to histones such as H4; association of DNA with histones is regulated by covalent histone modifications, e.g. acetylation, methylation, and biotinylation. We sought to identify aminoacid residues that are biotinylated in histone H4,and to determine whether acetylation and methylation of histones affect biotinylation. Synthetic peptides spanning fragments of human histone H4 were biotinylated enzymatically using biotinidase. Peptide-bound biotin was probed with streptavidin– peroxidase. Peptides based on the N-terminal sequence of histone H4 were effectively recognized by biotinidase as substrates for biotinylation; in contrast, peptides based on the C-terminal sequences were not biotinylated. …

Assessing Juvenile Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka) Energy Densities And Their Habitat Quality In The Chignik Watershed, Alaska, Heather Finkle May 2004

Assessing Juvenile Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka) Energy Densities And Their Habitat Quality In The Chignik Watershed, Alaska, Heather Finkle

Fisheries

The Chignik watershed, on the southern side of the Alaska Peninsula, supports a large salmon fishery vital to the local economy. Recent morphological changes to the watershed generated concern regarding the sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) stock that rears in Black Lake, at the head of the system. Studies of the Chignik watershed to date have not incorporated energy density data to explain the life history strategies of Chignik sockeye salmon. Re-estimated condition factor parameters improved our understanding of the length-weight relationships to fish health that isometric models described in Chignik sockeye salmon. Subsequent comparisons of age, length, weight, location, and …

Factors Affecting Marine Growth And Survival Of Auke Creek, Alaska Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch), Ryan Jordan Briscoe May 2004

Factors Affecting Marine Growth And Survival Of Auke Creek, Alaska Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch), Ryan Jordan Briscoe

Fisheries

Correlation analyses and stepwise regression models were run to examine relationships between Auke Creek coho salmon marine survival, scale growth, and a number of physical and biological covariates: local sea surface and air temperatures, local precipitation, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, local hatchery release numbers, size at return, and regional and state salmon catch numbers. Jack survival and adult survival covaried strongly, suggesting the primary cause of mortality is encountered in the first four or five months of marine life. The number of hatchery fish had the strongest correlation with marine survival (r = 0.71), which could indicate that hatchery releases …

Investigations Of The Role Of Lipids In Marine Mammal Diets, Health And Ecology, Tamara Lynn Mau May 2004

Investigations Of The Role Of Lipids In Marine Mammal Diets, Health And Ecology, Tamara Lynn Mau

Marine Biology

Lipids are essential to many aspects of marine mammal biology. I investigated the amount, type and flux of lipids under a variety of natural and controlled nutritional and dietary conditions, in order to increase our knowledge of marine mammal diets, health and ecology. First, I examined the influence of biological and environmental variables on the quantity and quality of blubber, and their importance in establishing condition indices in the bowhead whale. Blubber was heterogeneous in composition, varying by both site and depth. Sex, age-class, season and body length were all significant factors in determining lipid content (quality) of blubber. Blubber …

An Investigation Of The Effect Of An Educational Program On Students' Decision To Use Birth Control, Christine King

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the "Making Proud Choices Curriculum" on students' knowledge and attitudes on the use of birth control. The students were assigned to an experimental or control group. Students took a pre and post test to measure their knowledge and attitudes on human sexuality issues. The experimental group received eight 1-hour training sessions on the Making Proud Choices Curriculum. Results indicated that after training the experimental group had increases in knowledge and more positive attitudes than the control group.

Isolation And Characterization Of Photobacterium Phosphoreum From Migrating Alaskan Salmon, Kevin Jon Budsberg May 2004

Isolation And Characterization Of Photobacterium Phosphoreum From Migrating Alaskan Salmon, Kevin Jon Budsberg

Biological Sciences

We isolated luminous bacteria from drying chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta, reported by Alaska native fishermen to be 'glowing in the dark.' The salmon were harvested for subsistence use from the Yukon River, Alaska. We identified our luminous bacterial isolates as Photobacterium phosphoreum based on nutritional versatility, and 16S rDNA and luxA gene sequences. P. phosphoreum has previously only been isolated from the marine environment. We tested whether our strains, isolated from fish harvested in freshwater, represent cold-adapted, freshwater-tolerant strains of P. phosphoreum. We also analyzed lux operon composition and organization, and examined the 5' promoter region of the lux operon …

The Depositional History Of Three Freshwater Lakes In North Central Florida: Brooklyn Lake, Levys Prairie, And Cowpen Lake, Nancy T. Dewitt May 2004

The Depositional History Of Three Freshwater Lakes In North Central Florida: Brooklyn Lake, Levys Prairie, And Cowpen Lake, Nancy T. Dewitt

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Florida has approximately 7800 lakes that are heavily concentrated in the north-central part of the state—a mantled karst terrain. Although much research has been conducted in Florida’s lakes, there is not much information on the sedimentary infill. The focus of this research is to define the sedimentary infill of three closely spaced lakes (Brooklyn Lake, Levys Prairie, and Cowpen Lake) in north-central Florida and determine the relative importance of the various
sedimentary inputs and their associated processes. Interlake lithostratigraphy comparison helped determine if they experienced a similar depositional infilling history or a unique one.

Twenty-three vibracores were taken (12 in …
