The "Liability Of Newness" And Small Firm Access To Debt Capital: Is There A Link?, Susan Coleman
The "Liability Of Newness" And Small Firm Access To Debt Capital: Is There A Link?, Susan Coleman
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
Literature pertaining to the “liability of newness†contends that newer firms face particular difficulties and a greater risk of failure. This article seeks to determine if “newness†is also a disadvantage in the acquisition of debt capital. Results indicate that newer firms were significantly less likely to have lines of credit and were also significantly more likely to have been turned down for their most recent loan. Even when we control for length of relationship with the primary financial services provider, personal guarantees, and collateral, younger firms were still more likely to be turned down for loans. Small firms are …
Annualized Returns Of Ventured-Backed Public Companies Stratified By Decades And By Stages Of Financing, Emanuel Shachmurove, Yochanan Shachmurove
Annualized Returns Of Ventured-Backed Public Companies Stratified By Decades And By Stages Of Financing, Emanuel Shachmurove, Yochanan Shachmurove
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
This paper investigates the actual performance of 2,678 Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) of companies that were backed by venture capital from 1969 to 2002. The main purpose is to compare the annual returns of the venture capital industry during the 1980s and 1990s. Comparisons between the decades provide some reasoning for the increased media coverage of the industry. There is no doubt that the media is fascinated by the release of any good news concerned with venture capital. For example, many people are familiar with the recent venture-backed Initial Public Offering (IPO) of Google, which brought in $1.7 billion on …

Predictors Of Kindergarten Teachers' Practice Of Developmentally Appropriate Mathematics: Attitudes Toward Mathematics, Attitudes Toward Teaching Mathematics, And Pedagogical Content Knowledge Of Mathematics, Joohi Lee
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was intended to identify possible predictors for the practice of developmentally appropriate mathematics. This study tested three possible predictors: 1) kindergarten teachers' attitudes toward mathematics; 2) kindergarten teachers' attitudes toward teaching mathematics; and 3) kindergarten teachers' pedagogical content knowledge of mathematics, and its relationship to predict the practice of developmentally appropriate mathematics. Four research questions were addressed: 1. Do combined factors (kindergarten teachers' attitudes toward mathematics, their attitudes toward teaching mathematics, and their pedagogical content knowledge of mathematics) predict the practice of developmentally appropriate mathematics? 2. Do kindergarten teachers' attitudes toward mathematics predict their use of developmentally appropriate …

Why Augsburg College? A Look At Major Influences In The College Decision-Making Process For Trio Eligible Students, Jennifer Feine Hellie
Theses and Graduate Projects
At Augsburg College, diversity plays an important role in delivering transforming education for its students and is instrumental in defining the college community. This research identifies major influencers in the college decision-making process for TRIO participants. Federally funded TRIO programs like SSS provide access to higher education for students with academic need, financial need, who are first generation college students, or students who have disabilities. In order to assess the major influencers in the college decision-making process, current TRIO students at Augsburg College were asked to complete a survey. Students were asked to rate their feelings towards predetermined influencers when …
Leading Progressive Women To Victory In Minnesota, 2002-2004: A Journey Back From Electoral Losses For Lawmakers, Glenda Crank Holste
Leading Progressive Women To Victory In Minnesota, 2002-2004: A Journey Back From Electoral Losses For Lawmakers, Glenda Crank Holste
Theses and Graduate Projects
Minnesota's 2002 elections were a disaster for progressive women, those who support abortion rights and believe that government has a key role in making social improvements. In 2002 no progressive woman was elected to statewide office, and three key senators and four progressive representatives lost their re-election bids.
This research asks: Where and why has leadership emerged that helps progressive women regain ground in the Minnesota House of Representatives and adds Minnesota women to Congress?
In 2004, the DFL propelled five new women to the House, four over Republican women, and congressional races featured a record number of major party …

Political Dynamics Within The Balkans: The Cases Of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia, And Montenegro, Lisen Bashkurti
Chicago-Kent Law Review
The Essay intends to analyze the regional and local political dynamics within the Balkans and focuses on the most problematic and disputable areas after the Cold War. Through analyses of individual states, bilateral relations, and regional relations, the author gives a broad and complex view of the current and future reconfiguration of the Balkans. Individual cases with contradictory political trends, interstate problems with reciprocal implications, regional "domino effects" of overall solutions, and local and international engagements to support the process in accordance with the modern trend of democratization and integration of the Balkans are included in the Essay's laboratory of …
Final Status Of Kosovo: The Role Of Human Rights And Minority Rights , Wolfgang Benedek
Final Status Of Kosovo: The Role Of Human Rights And Minority Rights , Wolfgang Benedek
Chicago-Kent Law Review
In view of the massive human rights violations experienced in Kosovo, the reconstruction of society and the final status of the territory have to be based on human rights and minority rights. Besides universal human rights instruments, European regional standards are of particular importance as Kosovo wants to be fully integrated into Europe. The Article identifies the relevant European and international standards and procedures and finds shortcomings with regard to guarantees on economic, social, and cultural rights, which are an indispensable element of human security.
It then compares the role given to human and minority rights in the Constitutional Framework …
Self-Determination Under The Terms Of The 2002 Union Agreement Between Serbia And Montenegro: Tracing The Origins Of Kosovo's Self-Determination , Enver Hasani
Chicago-Kent Law Review
State building of the union between Serbia and Montenegro represents the biggest challenge for peace and stability in the Balkans and beyond, with the issue of an unsettled Kosovo as an everlasting indicator of that challenge. The USM Agreement alone is not enough to produce the desired results. Only an overall, nonterritorial restructuring of Kosovar society along the principles and norms of the rule of law, democracy, and the respect for human and minority rights can produce the desired results. An approach based on new internal territorial divisions, such as the ongoing process of decentralization, can only further exacerbate the …

Chicago-Kent Law Review
This Essay is intended as a thought-provoking contribution to an open discussion on Europe's relationship with Kosovo in the future. The main arguments are based on research undertaken by the European Stability Initiative ("ESI") as part of the Lessons Learned and Analysis Unit, a joint project between ESI and the European Union Pillar of UNMIK. More information on ESI and the Lessons Learned and Analysis Unit can be found on www.esiweb.org.
