Copepods From Shore And Offshore Waters Of Pakistan, Quddusi B. Kazmi Aug 2004

Copepods From Shore And Offshore Waters Of Pakistan, Quddusi B. Kazmi

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This report is a history of copepodology based on the review of previously recorded species of copepods from Pakistan (Arabian Sea) by Pakistani workers and other contemporary surveys. The plankton samples studied are the epipelagic copepods collected during the Northern Arabian Sea Ecological and Environmental Research (NASEER) Cruise I (January 7-22, 1992) and Cruise IV (May 10-21, 1994). Some planktonic and phytal species obtained from a U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) project (1993-1995) on living resources in nearshore waters, and interstitial species obtained during a preliminary survey ONR (1998-2000) of the interstitial copepods carried out for the first time …

Cyberspace Cartography: The Case Of On-Line Territorial Privacy, Daniel Benoliel Aug 2004

Cyberspace Cartography: The Case Of On-Line Territorial Privacy, Daniel Benoliel

ExpressO

Territorial privacy, one of the central categories of privacy protection, involves setting limit boundaries on intrusion into an explicit space or locale. Initially, the Restatement (Second) of Torts, which defined the privacy tort of intrusion, as applied by courts, most notably designated two classes of excluded areas: “private” places in which the individual can expect to be free from intrusion, and “non-private” places, in which the individual does not have a recognized expectation of privacy. In the physical world, courts ultimately held almost uniformly that the tort of intrusion could not occur in a public place or in a place …

Owning Music: From Publisher's Privilege To Composer's Copyright, Michael W. Carroll Aug 2004

Owning Music: From Publisher's Privilege To Composer's Copyright, Michael W. Carroll

ExpressO

More than four years after Napster demonstrated the power of the Internet as a means of distributing music, we still are in the midst of a cultural and legal debate about what the respective rights of music copyright owners, follow-on creators, disseminators, and purchasers should be. A common assumption underlying much of the debate is that whatever settlement emerges, it will apply equally to all forms of expression. This Article questions that assumption by investigating the early history of copyright in music.

For the first time in legal scholarship, the Article reveals and examines the distinct early history of copyright …

An Examination Into The Statistics Of The Singular Vectors For The Multi-User Mimo Wireless Channel, Scott Nathan Gunyan Aug 2004

An Examination Into The Statistics Of The Singular Vectors For The Multi-User Mimo Wireless Channel, Scott Nathan Gunyan

Theses and Dissertations

Many capacity and near-capacity achieving methods in multiple-input-multipleoutput (MIMO) wireless channels make use of the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the channel matrix. For the multi-user case, the SVD of the channel matrix for each user may result in right and left singular vectors that are similar between users. This proposes another descriptive characterization of the multi-user MIMO channel. Closely aligned singular vectors between any two users could reduce the achievable signaling rates of signal processing communication methods as one user would be more difficult to resolve in space-time from another. An examination into how this alignment can be described …

Electromagnetic Interference Of System On Package, Toshio Sudo, Hideki Sasaki, Norio Masuda, James L. Drewniak Aug 2004

Electromagnetic Interference Of System On Package, Toshio Sudo, Hideki Sasaki, Norio Masuda, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues are expected to be crucial for next-generation system-on-package (SOP) integrated high-performance digital LSIs and for radio frequency (RF) and analog circuits. Ordinarily in SOPs, high-performance digital LSIs are sources of EMI, while RF and analog circuits are affected by EMI (victims). This paper describes the following aspects of EMI in SOPs: 1) die/package-level EMI; 2) substrate-level EMI; 3) electromagnetic modeling and simulation; and 4) near electromagnetic field measurement. First, LSI designs are discussed with regard to radiated emission. The signal-return path loop and switching current in the power/ground line are inherent sources of EMI. The EMI …

Temporal Variations In The Apparent Emissivity Of Various Materials, Carl Salvaggio, David P. Miller Aug 2004

Temporal Variations In The Apparent Emissivity Of Various Materials, Carl Salvaggio, David P. Miller

Articles

Spectral emissivity measurements gathered in the longwave infrared region of the spectrum during a recent airborne hyperspectral data collection experiment indicated that the spectral emissivity of certain organic polymers changed by as much as 10% throughout the day. Inorganic and many other organic materials that were measured at the same time during this experiment showed no change. As this was an unexpected event, a subsequent experiment was designed to make emissivity measurements of several organic and inorganic materials over a 24-hour period/diurnal cycle. The results from this experiment confirmed that certain materials showed a significant spectral emissivity variation over this …

Comparison Of Basis-Vector Selection Methods For Target And Background Subspaces As Applied To Subpixel Target Detection, Peter Bajorski, Emmett J. Ientilucci, John Schott Aug 2004

Comparison Of Basis-Vector Selection Methods For Target And Background Subspaces As Applied To Subpixel Target Detection, Peter Bajorski, Emmett J. Ientilucci, John Schott

Articles

This paper focuses on comparing three basis-vector selection techniques as applied to target detection in hyperspectral imagery. The basis-vector selection methods tested were the singular value decomposition (SVD), pixel purity index (PPI), and a newly developed approach called the maximum distance (MaxD) method. Target spaces were created using an illumination invariant technique, while the background space was generated from AVIRIS hyperspectral imagery. All three selection techniques were applied (in various combinations) to target as well as background spaces so as to generate dimensionally-reduced subspaces. Both target and background subspaces were described by linear subspace models (i.e., structured models). Generated basis …

Identification And Detection Of Gaseous Effluents From Hyperspectral Imagery Using Invariant Algorithms, Erin M. O'Donnell, David W. Messinger, Carl Salvaggio, John Schott Aug 2004

Identification And Detection Of Gaseous Effluents From Hyperspectral Imagery Using Invariant Algorithms, Erin M. O'Donnell, David W. Messinger, Carl Salvaggio, John Schott

Articles

The ability to detect and identify effluent gases is, and will continue to be, of great importance. This would not only aid in the regulation of pollutants but also in treaty enforcement and monitoring the production of weapons. Considering these applications, finding a way to remotely investigate a gaseous emission is highly desirable. This research utilizes hyperspectral imagery in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum to evaluate an invariant method of detecting and identifying gases within a scene. The image is evaluated on a pixel-by-pixel basis and is studied at the subpixel level. A library of target gas spectra …

Variance In Percent Body Fat Between And Within Families As Measured By Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry, Laurel Anne Kelsey Aug 2004

Variance In Percent Body Fat Between And Within Families As Measured By Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry, Laurel Anne Kelsey

Theses and Dissertations

Objective: To determine the variance in percent body fat between and within families as measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Methods: Percent body fat (%BF) assessed in 95 females, 120 males (included 54 sets of biological siblings) using DXA. Physical activity questionnaire used to assess current physical activity habits in each participant. Results: Variance in %BF between and within families is similar. Amount of television viewing and levels of physical activity can affect %BF. Discussion: A model such as the one derived in this study can be a useful tool in intervention programs implemented to decrease obesity.
