Dose Threshold For Clinical Success In Coronary Brachytherapy: A Nested Case-Control Study, Harsimran Singh Aug 2004

Dose Threshold For Clinical Success In Coronary Brachytherapy: A Nested Case-Control Study, Harsimran Singh

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Intravascular brachytherapy is the primary treatment for coronary in-stent restenosis. We hypothesized that differences in dose delivered to target may contribute to treatment failures. We compared dose distribution between arteries that developed recurrent restenosis (treatment failures) and those that remained patent at nine-months (treatment success). A cohort of 207 patients receiving brachytherapy for coronary in-stent restenosis with four radiation delivery devices was followed to identify treatment failures and successes. This cohort was examined to establish which patient and lesion characteristics had an effect on outcome. A nested case-control construct was then used in which treatment failures (n=14) were compared 1:2 …

Embedded Psychology In Mens Rea Determinations: Systematic Differences Between Legal Standards And Reasoning Processes Across Cultures, Justin D. Levinson Aug 2004

Embedded Psychology In Mens Rea Determinations: Systematic Differences Between Legal Standards And Reasoning Processes Across Cultures, Justin D. Levinson

ExpressO

The mens rea inquiry asks jurors to determine a defendant’s mental state at a particular moment in time. Social and cultural psychological research, however, suggests that jurors (and people generally) may not understand others’ mental states in ways consistent with legal standards. In this article, the author theoretically and empirically examines (across culture) how jurors understand defendants’ mental states, investigating whether they can apply mental state inquiries in a manner consistent with domestic and international policy goals. After testing several mental state variables, the author finds that the law’s hierarchy of mental states frequently does not match jurors’ psychological processes. …

Conjoint Marital Therapy: Proxy Voice Intervention And Softening In The Context Of Couple Enactments, Ryan B. Seedall Aug 2004

Conjoint Marital Therapy: Proxy Voice Intervention And Softening In The Context Of Couple Enactments, Ryan B. Seedall

Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluated the effectiveness of proxy voice intervention, embedded within couple enactments, on client-perceived softening. During enactments, direct couple interaction is the focus while the therapist coaches from the periphery. In the context of an enactment, the therapist may use proxy voice when partners appear to be distressed and expressing themselves in terms of secondary emotions by modeling appropriate attachment and self-concept expression. The primary research question was whether therapist use of proxy voice in an enactment would be more likely to bring about softening effects, or whether use of proxy voice was counter-intuitive to enactment conceptualization and would …

The Effects Of Selenium On Estrogen-Regulated Gene Expression In Lncap Prostate Cancer Cells, Tory L. Parker Aug 2004

The Effects Of Selenium On Estrogen-Regulated Gene Expression In Lncap Prostate Cancer Cells, Tory L. Parker

Theses and Dissertations

Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in American men and the second leading cause of cancer deaths. Supplementation with Se has reduced the incidence of prostate cancer and Se status is inversely correlated with prostate cancer risk. One molecular mechanism by which high Se concentrations may affect cancer risk is by catalyzing disulfide bond formation or otherwise complexing with reactive sulfhydryl groups in cellular proteins. The estrogen receptor (ER) contains cysteines in zinc (Zn) fingers that are susceptible to oxidation and internal disulfide formation, which can prevent DNA binding. We examined ER binding to its DNA response element …

The Jurisprudence Of Enron: Professionalism As Interpretation, W. Bradley Wendel Aug 2004

The Jurisprudence Of Enron: Professionalism As Interpretation, W. Bradley Wendel

Cornell Law Faculty Working Papers

Jurisprudence can seem like a formidably esoteric field, with conceptual arguments carried on at a high level of abstraction, seemingly remote from the concerns of practicing lawyers. In fact, it is impossible to ignore jurisprudence when thinking about the role of lawyers in the wave of financial accounting scandals exemplified by the collapse of Enron. The Enron case is not about ethics so much as it is about the interpretation and application of a complex scheme of legal norms to innovative business transactions. The lawyers believed they were taking a legitimate, albeit aggressive interpretive attitude toward the law, by structuring …

Some Antitrust Foundations Of Payment Card Associations, Koki Arai Aug 2004

Some Antitrust Foundations Of Payment Card Associations, Koki Arai

ExpressO

In this study we analyze platforms and rejections in two-sided markets with network externalities, using the specific context of a payment card association. We look at the cooperative antitrust determination of the interchange fee by member banks, using a framework in which banks and merchants may have market power and consumers and merchants decide rationally on whether to buy or accept a payment card developed by Rochet and Tirole (2002). After showing the welfare implications of a cooperative determination of the interchange fee and antitrust conduct, we describe in detail the factors affecting merchant resistance, compare cooperative and for-profit business …

Differential Adolescent Delinquency Tolerance And The Effect Of Race And Gender, Evaristus Obinyan Aug 2004

Differential Adolescent Delinquency Tolerance And The Effect Of Race And Gender, Evaristus Obinyan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The study was designed to examine the attitudes of adolescents towards the tolerance of delinquent behavior. It was postulated that there would be a differential in the tolerance of delinquent behavior by juveniles from different age, gender, and racial groups. It was hypothesized that different groups would score higher or lower on select measures or dimensions (definition, reporting, controlling, preventing, correcting) of delinquency tolerance, and that their level of tolerance of delinquency might prove useful in explaining participation in delinquency.

The focus of the study was on identification of differential attitudes of various subgroups towards the violations of norms relating …
