Civil-Military Change In China: Elites, Institutes, And Ideas After The 16th Party Congress, Andrew Scobell Dr., Larry M. Wortzel Dr. Sep 2004

Civil-Military Change In China: Elites, Institutes, And Ideas After The 16th Party Congress, Andrew Scobell Dr., Larry M. Wortzel Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

In November 2002, the Chinese Communist Party held its 16th Congress and formally initiated a sweeping turnover of senior leaders in both the Party and the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The meeting heralded not merely a new set of personalities in positions of political and military power, but also the emergence of a new generation of leaders. Who are these individuals, and what does their rise mean for the future of China and its military? China matters to the United States because of its size, its spectacular patterns of growth, its profound problems linked to rapid growth, and its military …

Development Of A Novel Chloramphenicol Resistance Expression Plasmid Used For Genetic Complementation Of A Flig Deletion Mutant In Treponema Denticola, Linda L. Slivienski-Gebhardt, Jacques Izard, William A. Samsonoff, Ronald J. Limberger Sep 2004

Limberger

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

A new expression plasmid containing the fla operon promoter and a staphylococcal chloramphenicol resistance gene, was constructed to help assess the role of fliG in Treponema denticola motility. Deletion of fliG resulted in a nonmotile mutant with a markedly decreased number of flagellar filaments. Wild-type fliG genes from T. denticola and from Treponema pallidum were cloned into this expression plasmid. In both cases, the gene restored the ability of the mutant to gyrate its cell ends and enabled colony spreading in agarose. This shuttle plasmid enables high-level expression of genes in T. denticola and possesses an efficient selectable …

Otitis Externa Infection In Jordan. Clinical And Microbiological Features, Mohammed N. Battikhi, Samih I. Ammar

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Aims of this study were to investigate the clinical findings and to identify causative microorganisms and their susceptibility to antibiotics in otitis externa infection. METHODS: The symptoms and signs, as well as the bacterial and fungal flora from the auditory canal of one hundred and eighty patients (100 males and 80 females), age range from 6 month to 19-years old suffering from acute otitis externa were studied from January 2001 to December 2002. One way ANOVA and Least Significant Difference (LSD) were carried out for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Pain was the most common symptom (97.2%) while, itching and difficulty …

The Role Of Helicobacter Pylori In Esophagitis And Peptic Ulcer Disease In Iraq, Abdul M. Al-Saadi, Janan Q. Al-Khayat, Ihsan M. Muhammad, Sheelan A. Anwar

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study are to determine the prevalences of Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) infection in symptomatic, but endoscopically normal patients as well as in patients with endoscopically and histologically proven esophagitis, gastritis, duodenitis, duodenal ulcer, and gastric ulcer. METHODS: The study extended over the period November 1999 through June 2000. Biopsy specimens were harvested from intact areas of gastric antral mucosa, duodenal bulb, gastric body and lower third of esophagus of each one of 200 patients undergoing eseophago-gastro-duodenoscopy in endoscopy unit of Tikrit General Hospital (TGH), Salahuddin Governorate, Tikrit City, Iraq. The biopsies were submitted for histopathological, cultural …

Single Mothers Working At Night: Standard Work, Child Care Subsidies, And Implications For Welfare Reform, Erdal Tekin Sep 2004

Single Mothers Working At Night: Standard Work, Child Care Subsidies, And Implications For Welfare Reform, Erdal Tekin

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper estimates the effect of child care subsidies on the standard work decision of single mothers and examines whether this effect differs between welfare recipients and nonrecipients. The analysis uses data from the 1999 National Survey of America's Families. Results suggest that child care subsidy receipt is associated with a 6.9 percentage point increase in the probability of single mothers' working at standard jobs. When the effect of subsidy receipt is allowed to differ between welfare recipients and nonrecipients, results indicate that welfare recipients who are offered a child care subsidy are 14 percentage points more likely to work …

Levels Of Intravenous Enterococcus Faecalis That Cause Heart Colonization, Louis Zane Stromberg Sep 2004

Levels Of Intravenous Enterococcus Faecalis That Cause Heart Colonization, Louis Zane Stromberg

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

While previous studies have shown that presence of bacteria in systemic circulation can cause infective endocarditis, there is no information on the specific amount of bacteria necessary to cause this condition. The purpose of this study was to establish the minimum level of circulating bacteria that will cause colonization of damaged heart valves in rats. Fifty-two Sprague-Dawley rats were anesthetized and their heart valves were damaged using an established protocol. A clinical isolate of Enterococcus faecalis was transformed with a plasmid bearing the luxF and Chloramphenicol cassettes to label the bacteria with the light-emitting protein. After four weeks, the rats …

Creating And Detecting Doctored And Virtual Images: Implications To The Child Pornography Prevention Act, Hany Farid Sep 2004

Creating And Detecting Doctored And Virtual Images: Implications To The Child Pornography Prevention Act, Hany Farid

Computer Science Technical Reports

The 1996 Child Pornography Prevention Act (CPPA) extended the existing federal criminal laws against child pornography to include certain types of "virtual porn". In 2002, the United States Supreme Court found that portions of the CPPA, being overly broad and restrictive, violated First Amendment rights. The Court ruled that images containing an actual minor or portions of a minor are not protected, while computer generated images depicting a fictitious "computer generated" minor are constitutionally protected. In this report I outline various forms of digital tampering, placing them in the context of this recent ruling. I also review computational techniques for …

Power-Stepped Protocol: Enhancing Spatial Utilization In A Clustered Mobile Ad Hoc Network, Chansu Yu, Kang G. Shin, Ben Lee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

While most previous studies on mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) rely on the assumption that nodes are randomly distributed in the network coverage area, this assumption is unlikely to hold, as nodes tend to be cluttered around hot spots like the site of an accident or disaster. We refer to this as a clustered layout. Intuitively, a MANET with the clustered layout may suffer from serious performance degradation due to the excessive collisions in congested hot spots and space underutilization of sparse areas. In this paper, we propose a power-controlled network protocol, called the power-stepped protocol (PSP), that maximizes the …
