Virtual Shareholder Meetings, Elizabeth Boros Sep 2004

Virtual Shareholder Meetings, Elizabeth Boros

Duke Law & Technology Review

Electronic communication impacts how widely-held corporations conduct shareholder meetings. For example, technology has facilitated such options as electronic proxy voting, remote electronic voting, and "virtual meetings." This iBrief examines the idea of "virtual meetings" and argues that they should not entirely replace physical meetings unless an electronic solution can be devised which replicates the face-to-face accountability of management to retail shareholders.

Alkaline Anaerobic Respiration: Isolation And Characterization Of A Novel Alkaliphilic And Metal-Reducing Bacterium, Qi Ye, Yul Roh, Susan L. Carroll, Benjamin Blair, Jizhong Zhou, Chuanlun Zhang, Matthew Fields Sep 2004

Alkaline Anaerobic Respiration: Isolation And Characterization Of A Novel Alkaliphilic And Metal-Reducing Bacterium, Qi Ye, Yul Roh, Susan L. Carroll, Benjamin Blair, Jizhong Zhou, Chuanlun Zhang, Matthew Fields

Research, Publications & Creative Work

Iron-reducing enrichments were obtained from leachate ponds at the U.S. Borax Company in Boron, Calif. Based on partial small-subunit (SSU) rRNA gene sequences (approximately 500 nucleotides), six isolates shared 98.9% nucleotide identity. As a representative, the isolate QYMF was selected for further analysis. QYMF could be grown with Fe(III)-citrate, Fe(III)-EDTA, Co(III)-EDTA, or Cr(VI) as electron acceptors, and yeast extract and lactate could serve as electron donors. Growth during iron reduction occurred over the pH range of 7.5 to 11.0 (optimum, pH 9.5), a sodium chloride range of 0 to 80 g/liter (optimum, 20 g/liter), and a temperature range of 4 …

Weaving Words And Pictures: Allen Say And The Art Of Illustration, Christina M. Desai Sep 2004

Weaving Words And Pictures: Allen Say And The Art Of Illustration, Christina M. Desai

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Text and illustration in childrens literature can interact in many ways, sometimes complementing, sometimes contradicting each other. Picture books for children now receive considerable critical attention, yet the illustrations are seldom analyzed as seriously as the text. This article explores the dynamics between words and pictures in three fiction works: The Boy of the Three-Year Nap, by Dianne Synder, El Chino, and Emma's Rug, both by Allen Say. Say brings varied artistic techniques, such as visual metaphor, cartoon elements, and irony, as well as a multicultural perspective, to the development of character and meaning.'

Hopewell Archeology was initiated in 1995 to “promote interest in the study and interpretation of Hopewell archeology” (Vol. 1, No. 1, p. 2). Since its inception, we have managed to produce 11 issues (counting the one you are now reading) featuring a wide range of topics. The first issue of this newsletter was printed on standard white paper, and subsequent issues were printed on green paper. This is the first issue of Hopewell Archeology since Volume 5, Number 2 was printed in December 2002.

A Visual Language For Animating Sketches, Richard C. Davis, James A. Landay Sep 2004

A Visual Language For Animating Sketches, Richard C. Davis, James A. Landay

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present our research into visual languages for animating sketches. Animation is a rich mode of communication that is currently accessible to few. Simple animation systems exist, but severely restrict the types of motion that can be represented. Our field studies are demonstrating that would-be animators need to coordinate many objects moving in a variety of ways. The visual language described here allows a variety of motions to be defined with hand gestures, and gives visual feedback for coordination of events. This may open up computerized communication to users who think in dynamic visual images.

Teaching Statistics With Sports Examples, Paul Kvam, Joel Sokol Sep 2004

Teaching Statistics With Sports Examples, Paul Kvam, Joel Sokol

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Class material for introductory and advanced statistics can be colorfully illustrated by using appropriate data and examples from sports. Specific methods, including statistical graphics (e.g., boxplots), ball-and-urn probabilities, and statistical regression are demonstrated. Examples are drawn from popular American sports such as baseball, basketball, soccer and American football. Classroom feedback indicates that most students enjoy sports examples as a way to learn abstract concepts using familiar, recreational settings.

Legibility, Mystery, And Visual Access As Predictors Of Preference And Perceived Danger In Forest Settings Without Pathways, Thomas R. Herzog, Laura S. Kropscott Sep 2004

Legibility, Mystery, And Visual Access As Predictors Of Preference And Perceived Danger In Forest Settings Without Pathways, Thomas R. Herzog, Laura S. Kropscott

Peer Reviewed Articles

The authors attempt to address some unresolved issues within the Kaplans’ preference-matrix model of environmental preference. These issues involve the relation between legibility and preference and the relations among preference, danger, and mystery. Participants rated 70 within-forest settings containing no visible pathways for preference, danger, or one of seven predictor variables. Legibility and coherence were found to be independent, positive predictors of preference. Likewise, landmarks and visual access were independent positive predictors of legibility. Legibility fully mediated the positive relation between landmarks and preference. Visual access interacted with legibility in predicting preference: The relation between preference and either predictor was …

What Mothers Want: Welfare Reform And Maternal Desire, Patricia K. Jennings Sep 2004

What Mothers Want: Welfare Reform And Maternal Desire, Patricia K. Jennings

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

In this study I use participant observations,face-to-face interviews, and focus group interviews to examine how women on welfare read and negotiate culture-of-poverty discourse and the imagery that this discourse spawns. I spoke with two groups of young single mothers receiving welfare. The first group included young mothers between the ages of 18 and 23 who were attending high school in a community-based program that served women on welfare. The second group included mothers in their early to mid 20's who were attending either a local two-year college or research university. Education was a path of resistance for the women in …

A Journey With The End In Mind: An Examination Of How Advance Planning May Influence End-Of-Life Decisions, Elizabeth Lada Morse Sep 2004

A Journey With The End In Mind: An Examination Of How Advance Planning May Influence End-Of-Life Decisions, Elizabeth Lada Morse

Student Scholarship

There are many sociocultural and economic factors that shape discussions about treatment options for terminally ill patients. These factors include access to lifeprolonging medical options, societal priorities regarding the allocation of limited health care resources, cost constraints of payers, and societal consensus that patient autonomy underpins lifesustaining treatment decisions. The focus of this study is primarily directed to issues of endoflife care decisions as they relate to advance directives (ADs) and palliative care. It is argued that when death is expected or foreseeable, advance care planning has value for the individual, family, organization and community. It is debatable whether ADs …
