On The U.S. Aversion To Ritual Behavior And The Vocation Of The Liturgical Theologian, Martin F. Connell Sep 2004

On The U.S. Aversion To Ritual Behavior And The Vocation Of The Liturgical Theologian, Martin F. Connell

Theology Faculty Publications

This three-part essay reflects on the vocation of liturgical theologians in a culture in which there is a general antipathy toward the influence of religious rituals on personal formation and decision-making.1 Part ι considers a few foundational nineteenth-century authors of the American Renaissance for reflections on the aversion to Christian ritual behavior. Part 2 takes up the sermons of a few nineteenth-century revivalist preachers. Part 3 suggests five challenges to liturgical theologians who teach and think in the complex social and religious environment of the United States.

Immunogold Labeling To Enhance Contrast In Optical Coherence Microscopy Of Tissue Engineered Corneal Constructs, Chris B. Raub, Elizabeth J. Orwin, Richard C. Haskell

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Our lab has used an optical coherence microscope (OCM) to assess both the structure of tissue-engineered corneal constructs and their transparency. Currently, we are not able to resolve cells versus collagen matrix material in the images produced. We would like to distinguish cells in order to determine if they are viable while growing in culture and also if they are significantly contributing to the light scattering in the tissue. In order to do this, we are currently investigating the use of immunogold labeling. Gold nanoparticles are high scatterers and can create contrast in images. We have conjugated gold nanoparticles to …

Tackling Crime And Fear Of Crime While Waiting At Britain’S Railway Stations, Paul Cozens, Richard Neale, David Hillier, Jeremy Whitaker Sep 2004

Tackling Crime And Fear Of Crime While Waiting At Britain’S Railway Stations, Paul Cozens, Richard Neale, David Hillier, Jeremy Whitaker

Journal of Public Transportation

Crime on the railways in Britain is an increasing concern for train operating companies, the British Transport Police (BTP), passengers, and local residents. Significantly, rail users consistently perceive their risks from crime to be considerably higher than official crime statistics indicate, having a negative affect on levels of patronage. This article presents an exploratory study of passengers’ fear of crime while waiting at railway stations using Quick Time Virtual Reality (QTVR) walkthrough scenes. QTVR arguably represents an innovative, dynamic, and interactive environmental stimulus for gaining insights into passengers’ fear of crime. Visibility at stations was identified as a crucial factor …

Does Anyone Need Help Out There? Lessons From Designing Online Help, Judith M. Arnold, Floyd Csir, Jennifer N. Sias, Jingping Zhang

Librarian Research

In order to provide online help for distance students, as well as the increasing number of on-campus students who regularly access library resources, a team of librarians from the Marshall University Libraries created an online library assistance site (HELP). This site brings together traditional print handouts, FAQs, online subject guides, course-specific guides, learning modules, and instructional videos in one central location where users can get assistance with library-related questions at their point of need. This article discusses the rationale for developing the site, the process of creating it and incorporating user input, ongoing content development, the impact upon the Libraries’ …

A Distributed Evolutionary Algorithmic Approach To The Coverage Problem For Submersible Sensors, Jason C. Tillett, Raghuveer Rao, Ferat Sahin Sep 2004

A Distributed Evolutionary Algorithmic Approach To The Coverage Problem For Submersible Sensors, Jason C. Tillett, Raghuveer Rao, Ferat Sahin

Presentations and other scholarship

Untethered, underwater sensors, deployed for event detection and tracking and operating in an autonomous mode will be required to self-assemble into a configuration, which optimizes their coverage, effectively minimizing the probability that an event in the target area goes undetected. This organized, cooperative, and autonomous, spreading-out of the sensors is complicated due to sensors localized communication. A given sensor will not in general have position and velocity information for all sensors, but only for those in its communication area. A possible approach to this problem, motivated by an evolutionary optimization technique, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is proposed and extended in …

Phospholipid scramblase 1 (PLSCR1) is an interferon (IFN)- and growth factor-inducible, calcium-binding protein that either inserts into the plasma membrane or binds DNA in the nucleus depending on its state of palmyitoylation. In certain hematopoietic cells, PLSCR1 is required for normal maturation and terminal differentiation from progenitor cells as regulated by select growth factors, where it promotes recruitment and activation of Src kinases. PLSCR1 is a substrate of Src (and Abl) kinases, and transcription of the PLSCR1 gene is regulated by the same growth factor receptor pathways in which PLSCR1 potentiates afferent signaling. The marked transcriptional upregulation of PLSCR1 by …

Volume Holographic Recording And Readout For 90-Deg Geometry, Partha P. Banerjee, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Nickolai Kukhtarev, Tatiana Kukhtareva

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

When a prerecorded cross-beam hologram is reconstructed (so-called edge-lit readout) with a uniform plane wave and a point source, the resulting exact solutions reveal Bessel-function-type diffracted beam profiles, which are fundamentally modified under weak propagational diffraction. The case of a profiled beam readout with propagational diffraction may be analyzed using a transfer function approach based on 2-D Laplace transforms. In a second series of investigations, dynamic readout from a cross-beam volume hologram recorded with two orthogonal uniform plane waves is considered for various dependences of the refractive index modulation with intensity. Typically, refractive index profiles that are proportional to the …

Time Restrictions In Natural Resource Management: A Dynamic And Stochastic Analysis, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Hamid Beladi Sep 2004

Time Restrictions In Natural Resource Management: A Dynamic And Stochastic Analysis, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Hamid Beladi

Articles

This paper provides a theoretical analysis of time restrictions in the context of natural resource management in North America. The economic inefficiencies arising from the use of time restrictions to protect natural resources have been well documented by researchers. We first show that in the presence of uncertainty about the evolution of the resource stock, time restrictions can lead to the collapse of the resource that is sought to be protected. Given this finding, in the second part of the paper, we discuss an approach to natural resource management under uncertainty in which time restrictions are used to maximize the …

Image Quality Analysis Of A Spectra-Radiometric Sparse-Aperture Model, Noah R. Block, Robert Introne, John R. Schott

Articles

Sparse aperture (SA) telescopes represent a promising technology to increase the effective diameter of an optical system while reducing overall weight and stowable size. Although conceptually explored in the literature for decades, the technology has only recently matured to the point of being reasonably considered for certain applications. In general, a sparse aperture system consists of an array of sub-apertures that are phased to synthesize a larger effective aperture. The models used to date to create predictions of sparse aperture imagery typically make use of a “gray world” assumption, where the input is a resampled black and white panchromatic image. …

Cultural Value Orientations, Attributions, And Breast Cancer Screening Behaviors, Patricia M. Flynn Sep 2004

Cultural Value Orientations, Attributions, And Breast Cancer Screening Behaviors, Patricia M. Flynn

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Discrepancies in breast cancer screening behavior exist among various ethnic groups in the United States (Jacobs & Lauderdale, 2001), with Latino American women reporting particularly low screening rates in comparison to Anglo American women (ACS, 2002). Research indicates that behavior is in part influenced by aspects of culture and relevant psychological processes (Betancourt & Lopez, 1993; Betancourt & Fuentes, 2001). This study was designed to investigate the relations among cultural values, attributional processes, and breast cancer screening behavior among Anglo and Latino women. This study also investigated the influence of acculturation among Latino women in relation to the other study …
