Spectrophotometric System And Method For The Identification And Characterization Of A Particle In A Bodily Fluid, Luis Humberto Garcia-Rubio, Yvette D. Mattley, German Leparc, Manuel Bayona, Andres Cardenas

USF Patents

An infectious disease or disorder in a fluid, such as a mammalian blood sample, is detected by taking a transmission spectrum of a test sample in at least a portion of the ultraviolet visible near-infrared and comparing the spectrum with a standard sample spectrum. From the comparison it is then determined whether the fluid from the test sample contains an infectious disease or disorder, and an identity of the infectious disease or disorder is determined. Spectroscopic and multiwavelength turbidimetry techniques provide a rapid, inexpensive, and convenient means for diagnosis. The comparison and determination steps may be performed visually or by …

Influence Of Lithophysae Geometry And Distribution On Mechanical Properties Of Topopah Spring Tuff, Mohammad Shahidul Islam, Justin Fenton, Moses Karakouzian, Jaime Gonzalez, Amy J. Smiecinski, Raymond E. Keeler

Publications (YM)

The current Site Recommendation study for the proposed high level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain locates the repository emplacement drifts approximately 81% within the lower lithophysal unit of the Topopah Springs Formation (Tptpll), 4% within the upper lithophysal unit of the Topopah Springs Formation (Tptpul), and roughly 15% within the middle, non-lithophysal unit (Tptpmn) of the same formation. A major geomechanical issue facing the Yucca Mountain Project is to understand the thermomechanical behavior of lithophysal tuff, which comprises roughly 85% of the repository host rock.

Apprendi's Limits, Roger Craig Green Sep 2004

Apprendi's Limits, Roger Craig Green

ExpressO

This article argues that Blakely v. Washington did not decide (explicitly or implicitly) whether the Federal Sentencing Guidelines are constitutional. It also claims that the best interpretation of Apprendi v. New Jersey would uphold the Guidelines because they do not result in a punishment above the crime of conviction's statutory maximum. The notion that statutory maxima are constitutionally important stems from separation of power principles. Congress, not the Commission, is responsible for defining crimes, and thereby for prescribing how much punishment is authorized by a jury's guilty verdict.

Wireless Telecommunications, Infrastructure Security, And The Nimby Problem, Steven J. Eagle Sep 2004

Wireless Telecommunications, Infrastructure Security, And The Nimby Problem, Steven J. Eagle

ExpressO

This article explores the clash between federal policies encouraging wireless communications services and the application of local land use regulations to the siting of telecommunications towers. It concludes that Congress’s effort to strike a balance in the Telecommunications Act of 1996 between local concerns on one hand and national commerce and homeland security on the other has proved vague in content and susceptible to procedural thickets that might make local parochialism impervious to challenge. The article suggests statutory changes, including time limitations and the creation of presumptions and safe harbor rules, that might better balance infrastructure development needs with local …

Spin Control And The High-Profile Client -- Should The Attorney-Client Privilege Extend To Communications With Public Relations Consultants?, Ann Murphy Sep 2004

Spin Control And The High-Profile Client -- Should The Attorney-Client Privilege Extend To Communications With Public Relations Consultants?, Ann Murphy

ExpressO

The use of public relations consultants in connection with high-profile cases is a relatively new development. Public relations firms are advertising that their advice is necessary when celebrities face criminal charges. It is beyond speculation that such advice may be helpful, but should such advice be protected from disclosure under the attorney-client privilege? Privileges are to be recognized “only within the narrowest limits required by principle.” Public relations consultants transmit information to the public. The communications are not meant to be confidential. These communications do not fall within the purposes or the history of the attorney-client privilege.

β-Amyloid Directly Inhibits Human α4β3-Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors Heterologously Expressed In Human Sh-Ep1 Cells, Jie Wu, Yen Ping Kuo, Andrew A. George, Lin Xu, Jun Hu, Ronald J. Lukas Sep 2004

β-Amyloid Directly Inhibits Human α4β3-Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors Heterologously Expressed In Human Sh-Ep1 Cells, Jie Wu, Yen Ping Kuo, Andrew A. George, Lin Xu, Jun Hu, Ronald J. Lukas

Translational Neuroscience

Amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation and aggregation are thought to contribute to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In AD, there is a selective decrease in the numbers of radioligand binding sites corresponding to the most abundant nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) subtype, which contains human α4 and β2 subunits (hα4β2-nAChR). However, the relationships between these phenomena are uncertain, and effects of Aβ on hα4β2-nAChR function have not been investigated in detail. We first confirmed expression of hα4 and hβ2 subunits as messenger RNA in transfected, human SH-EP1 cells by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and mRNA fluorescence in situ, hybridization analyses. Immunoprecipitation Western …
