English Theses & Dissertations

This is a collection of six short stories about family dynamics. The stories follow a rough chronology of family development, beginning with two stories of early family life. In "Wedding Gift" a recently divorced young woman severs a lingering emotional attachment to her ex-husband when she returns a wedding present. In "Strolling," the young female protagonist questions her own fitness as a mother when she witnesses a near-tragedy involving a stranger's child in a stroller. The third story, "Cousin Edward," features a woman at midlife who questions her own happiness as a wife and a mother when she's called on …

Modeling And Simulation Of Photonic Crystal Fibers Using Finite Difference Frequency Domain Method, Md. Khalid Ikram Oct 2004

Modeling And Simulation Of Photonic Crystal Fibers Using Finite Difference Frequency Domain Method, Md. Khalid Ikram

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) allow guiding light in low-index core. These fibers exhibit properties such as single-mode operation in broad wavelength region. The mode shape and group velocity dispersion can be controlled by designing the microstructures of the cladding. In order to study these properties, a fast, efficient, and highly accurate numerical modeling method is required.

A full-vectorial finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) method is implemented. The modal properties of conventional step index fiber and index-guiding PCF are analyzed using this modeling technique. Compared to plane wave expansion and biorthogonal basis methods, FDFD is found to be simple, reliable, and efficient. PCFs …

Hierarchical Hybrid Multicast An End System Multicast Algorithm Approach, Guillermo Loaisiga Oct 2004

Hierarchical Hybrid Multicast An End System Multicast Algorithm Approach, Guillermo Loaisiga

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Due to the rapid development in the computer and communication technologies, the Internet is experiencing an increasing demand of high-speed, real-time distributed applications, such as live streaming multimedia, videoconferencing, distributed simulations, and multiparty games. Multicast is an efficient transmission mechanism to support these applications. Historically, IP Multicast (IPM) has provided multicast support with well-known benefits, especially in bandwidth savings. However, it has experienced little deployment due to economic and architectural limitations.

Overlay multicast holds promise for the implementation of large scale Internet multicast services. An overlay network is a virtual topology constructed on top of the Internet infrastructure. This concept …

INTRODUCTION: "[Y]ou are a disgusting piece of dirt."' Judge Steven Shutter, a county judge in South Florida, used these words to describe a twenty- four-year-old woman whom he labeled a terrorist and who was condemned by the media. Aside from name-calling, Judge Shutter raised the woman's bail from $3,500 to $25,000 when he learned the nature of the offense, 'just in case" the woman might be able to afford the lower bond. Given the strength of Judge Shutter's animosity toward her, one might assume that Yasmin Kassima Sealey- Doe had provided assistance to the terrorists who attacked the World Trade …

We Welcome The New Immigrants, John Defrain, Rochelle L. Dalla, Douglas A. Abbott, Julie Johnson Oct 2004

We Welcome The New Immigrants, John Defrain, Rochelle L. Dalla, Douglas A. Abbott, Julie Johnson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

From the very beginning of this project we have focused on taking a balanced approach to identifying the strengths and challenges of new immigrants in the Great Plains. Discussions of change in our world invariably focus on problems, and only occasionally on the strengths. We set out to look at new immigrants from a different perspective, in our view, a more realistic perspective: seeing the inherent strengths they possess as newcomers to our region and the gifts they bring, and examining the cultural assets the newcomers and the longer-term residents all can rely upon in working together to meet the …

A View Of Sudanese Refugee Resettlement Through Nebraska’S Print Media, Mary Willis, Constance Fernald Oct 2004

A View Of Sudanese Refugee Resettlement Through Nebraska’S Print Media, Mary Willis, Constance Fernald

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The print media has the potential to educate the general public about newly arriving Great Plains populations, influence refugee resettlement programs, and motivate volunteers to assist in transitions. Thus, accuracy of news items is crucial to successful assimilation of new populations to host communities. In this paper, we provide results from a content analysis of eight Nebraska newspapers regarding Sudanese refugees. We focus on refugee population descriptors, cultural characteristics, resettlement issues, and refugee goals to determine what could be learned about refugees from Sudan if one used local print media. Consistent with theories of stereotyping, results suggest that limited, and …

Cabining Intellectual Property Through A Property Paradigm, Michael A. Carrier Oct 2004

Cabining Intellectual Property Through A Property Paradigm, Michael A. Carrier

Duke Law Journal

One of the most revolutionary legal changes in the past generation has been the “propertization” of intellectual property (IP). The duration and scope of rights expand without limit, and courts and companies treat IP as absolute property, bereft of any restraints. But astonishingly, scholars have not yet recognized that propertization also can lead to the narrowing of IP. In contrast to much of the literature, which criticizes the propertization of IP, this Article takes it as a given. For the transformation is irreversible, sinking its tentacles further into public and corporate consciousness (as well as the IP laws) with each …

Flexible Verification Of Mpeg-4 Stream In Peer-To-Peer Cdn, Tieyan Li, Yongdong Wu, Di Ma, Robert H. Deng Oct 2004

Flexible Verification Of Mpeg-4 Stream In Peer-To-Peer Cdn, Tieyan Li, Yongdong Wu, Di Ma, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The current packet based stream authentication schemes provide effective and efficient authentication over a group of packets transmitted on erasure channels. However, by fixing the packets in transmission, any packet manipulation will cause authentication failure. In p2p content delivery network where a proxy-in-the-middle is able to store, forward, transcode and transform the stream, previous schemes are simply unapplicable. To address the problem, we propose a flexible verification scheme that relies on special stream formats (i.e. Unequal Loss Protection ULP scheme [7]). We apply the so called Unequal Loss Verification ULV scheme into MPEG-4 framework. The encoding, packing, amortizing and verifying …

Design And Analysis Of A Cooperative Medium Access Scheme For Wireless Mesh Networks, Arup Acharya, Archan Misra, Sorav Bansal Oct 2004

Design And Analysis Of A Cooperative Medium Access Scheme For Wireless Mesh Networks, Arup Acharya, Archan Misra, Sorav Bansal

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents the detailed design and performance analysis of MACA-P, a RTS/CTS based MAC protocol, that enables simultaneous transmissions in wireless mesh networks. The IEEE 802.11 DCF MAC prohibits any parallel transmission in the neighborhood of either a sender or a receiver (of an ongoing transmission). MACA-P is a set of enhancements to the 802.11 MAC that allows parallel transmissions in situations when two neighboring nodes are either both receivers or transmitters, but a receiver and a transmitter are not neighbors. The performance of MACA-P in terms of system throughput is obtained through a simulation of the protocol using …

Clip-Based Similarity Measure For Hierarchical Video Retrieval, Yuxin Peng, Chong-Wah Ngo Oct 2004

Clip-Based Similarity Measure For Hierarchical Video Retrieval, Yuxin Peng, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper proposes a new approach and algorithm for the similarity measure of video clips. The similarity is mainly based on two bipartite graph matching algorithms: maximum matching (MM) and optimal matching (OM). MM is able to rapidly filter irrelevant video clips, while OM is capable of ranking the similarity of clips according to the visual and granularity factors. Based on MM and OM, a hierarchical video retrieval framework is constructed for the approximate matching of video clips. To allow the matching between a query and a long video, an online clip segmentation algorithm is also proposed to rapidly locate …

Things That Pass Away, James J. Lidington Oct 2004

Things That Pass Away, James J. Lidington

English Theses & Dissertations

"Things That Pass Away" is a memoir of family dynamics and my growth from childhood through my adult years. Through a series of essays about my father's failing mental state, my mom's death, my first marriage, and finding out about a longtime affair Dad had with a woman with whom he worked, I deal with the mechanics of my family and how they handled -- or not -- situations that defied being handled. They're stories that I tell as much out of a felt need to record them, to get them down before they dissolve into vapor, as to pay …

A Novel Log-Based Relevance Feedback Technique In Content-Based Image Retrieval, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu Oct 2004

A Novel Log-Based Relevance Feedback Technique In Content-Based Image Retrieval, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Relevance feedback has been proposed as an important technique to boost the retrieval performance in content-based image retrieval (CBIR). However, since there exists a semantic gap between low-level features and high-level semantic concepts in CBIR, typical relevance feedback techniques need to perform a lot of rounds of feedback for achieving satisfactory results. These procedures are time-consuming and may make the users bored in the retrieval tasks. For a long-term study purpose in CBIR, we notice that the users' feedback logs can be available and employed for helping the retrieval tasks in CBIR systems. In this paper, we propose a novel …

There are a number of issues facing those who wish to employ learning objects to facilitate learning. These issues are not, however, inherent in the component-based paradigm. The first section of this paper describes some of the most difficult issues to be resolved. In the second section, we present a model of the use of learning objects that is grounded in a object-based paradigm. In the third section, we describe the …

Legislative Ethics And Codes Of Conduct, Rick Stapenhurst, Riccardo Pelizzo Oct 2004

Legislative Ethics And Codes Of Conduct, Rick Stapenhurst, Riccardo Pelizzo

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The purpose of this paper is to discuss why and how ethics reforms have been enacted by many parliaments in the course of the past decade. Our argument is fairly straightforward. Politicians’ perceived irresponsiveness, various forms of misconduct and corruption scandals have eroded voters’ trust in politicians and political institutions. In order to induce a more ethical behavior among politicians as well as to rebuild public trust in political institutions, ethics regimes have been adopted by several legislatures. Such regimes have generally taken two main forms: ethics codes and conduct codes. Ethics codes tend to be fairly general documents: they …

Currents And Crosscurrents In The International Intellectual Property Regime, Peter K. Yu Oct 2004

Currents And Crosscurrents In The International Intellectual Property Regime, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

Since the establishment of the TRIPs Agreement, intellectual property protection has been expanding rapidly, and many less developed countries have become dissatisfied with the international intellectual property regime. From bilateral free trade agreements to the increasing use of technological protection measures, many commentators fear that the recent "one-way ratchet" will roll back the substantive and strategic gains made by less developed countries during the negotiation of the TRIPS Agreement. Interestingly, intellectual property rightsholders feel equally threatened by the recent developments, in particular the development of the Doha Declaration, the World Summit on the Information Society, the WIPO Development Agenda, and …

Landmine Detection And Discrimination Using High-Pressure Waterjets, Daryl G. Beetner, R. Joe Stanley, Sanjeev Agarwal, Deepak R. Somasundaram, Kopal Nema, Bhargav Mantha Oct 2004

Landmine Detection And Discrimination Using High-Pressure Waterjets, Daryl G. Beetner, R. Joe Stanley, Sanjeev Agarwal, Deepak R. Somasundaram, Kopal Nema, Bhargav Mantha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Methods of locating and identifying buried landmines using high-pressure waterjets were investigated. Methods were based on the sound produced when the waterjet strikes a buried object. Three classification techniques were studied, based on temporal, spectral, and a combination of temporal and spectral approaches using weighted density distribution functions, a maximum likelihood approach, and hidden Markov models, respectively. Methods were tested with laboratory data from low-metal content simulants and with field data from inert real landmines. Results show that the sound made when the waterjet hit a buried object could be classified with a 90% detection rate and an 18% false …
