Achromatic Angle-Insensitive Infrared Quarter-Wave Retarder Based On Total Internal Reflection At The Si–Sio2 Interface, R. M.A. Azzam, Cristina L. Spinu
Achromatic Angle-Insensitive Infrared Quarter-Wave Retarder Based On Total Internal Reflection At The Si–Sio2 Interface, R. M.A. Azzam, Cristina L. Spinu
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
An achromatic infrared (λ = 1.2–4 μm), Si-prism quarter-wave retarder (QWR) is described that uses total internal reflection at a buried Si–SiO2 interface at an angle of incidence φ near 33°, where ∂Δ/∂φ = 0. The retardance Δ deviates from 90° by <±2° within a field of view of ±10° (in air) over the entire bandwidth. Because the SiO2 layer at the base of the prism is optically thick, this QWR is unaffected by environmental contamination.

Civil-Military Cooperation In Peace Operations: The Case Of Kosovo, Thomas R. Mockaitis Dr.
Civil-Military Cooperation In Peace Operations: The Case Of Kosovo, Thomas R. Mockaitis Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The humanitarian intervention in Kosovo provides an excellent case study of civil-military cooperation (CIMIC) in peace operations. The intervention required 40,000 heavily armed combat troops from NATO and Partnership for Peace countries to provide security and coordinate relief efforts with the UN, the OSCE, and over 500 humanitarian organizations. CIMIC provided the mechanism for such cooperation and support. Like any concept employed in coalition warfare, CIMIC varied widely in the quality of its application. This study examines the effectiveness of CIMIC within each brigade area and throughout the province as a whole. It identifies best practices and common mistakes to …
Sex Differences In Video Game Play: A Communication-Based Explanation, Kristen Lucas, John L. Sherry
Sex Differences In Video Game Play: A Communication-Based Explanation, Kristen Lucas, John L. Sherry
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
In this study, we examined gender differences in video game use by focusing on interpersonal needs for inclusion, affection, and control, as well as socially constructed perceptions of gendered game play. Results of a large-scale survey (n = 534) of young adults’ reasons for video game use, preferred game genres, and amount of game play are reported. Female respondents report less frequent play, less motivation to play in social situations, and less orientation to game genres featuring competition and three-dimensional rotation. Implications for game design are discussed.
Isolation Versus Quarantine And Alternative Measures To Control Emerging Infectious Diseases, Fahad A. Al-Ateeg
Isolation Versus Quarantine And Alternative Measures To Control Emerging Infectious Diseases, Fahad A. Al-Ateeg
Saudi Medical Journal
In the past 25 years, the world has witnessed the emergence and re-emergence of many infectious diseases. In the early stages of their emergence, isolation and quarantine may be the only and last resort to effectively control infectious diseases when we are confronted with limited or no knowledge of a newly identified and previously unknown contagious disease, which causes a serious public health threat either locally or internationally. The article traces back the origins of isolation and quarantine; defines precisely the terms isolation and quarantine as they are currently used in the modern era; compare and contrast these terms; identifies …

Mel Gibson's The Passion Of The Christ: Market Segmentation, Mass Marketing And Promotion, And The Internet, Peter A. Maresco
Mel Gibson's The Passion Of The Christ: Market Segmentation, Mass Marketing And Promotion, And The Internet, Peter A. Maresco
WCBT Faculty Publications
The pre-release publicity surrounding the Mel Gibson film, The Passion of the Christ, warrants an in-depth look at the role that market segmentation and marketing promotion, including use of the Internet, have played in the overall success of the film. As background, films commonly classified as biblical epics are referenced in order to construct a framework that will demonstrate how the promotion of this genre of film, with the exception of the Internet, has essentially changed very little over time. This paper is not a review of the film nor is it intended to be a brief course in marketing. …

Does Sex Of Dyad Members Really Matter? A Review Of Leader-Member Exchange, Brent J. Goertzen, Susan Fritz
Does Sex Of Dyad Members Really Matter? A Review Of Leader-Member Exchange, Brent J. Goertzen, Susan Fritz
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
Leader-member exchange (LMX) generally refers to the leadership process centered on the interactions between leaders and direct reports. The basic premise of high quality leader-member exchange relationships holds that direct reports gain tremendous benefits through these partnerships. LMX is perhaps the most commonly researched theory of leadership. However, few studies have specifically examined the role of dyad members’ sex as a predictor of quality LMX. Several studies investigating the role of dyad members’ sex and quality LMX examined the effect of sex in an aggregated variable, demographic similarity, which often included other demographic characteristics such as age, education level and …

On Gallardo And Smith's Alienwoman (2004), Stella Williams
On Gallardo And Smith's Alienwoman (2004), Stella Williams
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Ximena Gallardo C. and C. Jason Smith's recent book, AlienWoman, is a truly fascinating analysis of the relationship/conflict between the female protagonist Lt. Ellen Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, and the monstrous feminine Alien throughout the Alien saga consisting of: Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), Alien3 (1992), and AlienResurrection (1997). Lt. Ellen Ripley introduced viewers to their first self-reliant and successful female hero. The authors claim an important site for discussion on the changing ideas about gender, sex, and the female body is created by the Alien saga.

Understanding Settlement In Damages (And Beyond), Chris Guthrie
Understanding Settlement In Damages (And Beyond), Chris Guthrie
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
For all of the ways in which the Sabia case is extraordinary, its outcome--settlement--is decidedly ordinary. In most civil litigation, as in the Sabias' litigation against Dr. Maryellen Humes and Norwalk Hospital, "[s]ettlement is where the action is." Roughly two-thirds of all cases settle (and most of the rest are resolved through motions). Why do most cases settle? Given the costs, delay, and unpleasantness of the litigation process, why do any cases go to trial? To address these questions--that is, to explain why most cases settle as well as why some cases "fail" to settle and result in trial--legal academics …

This article discusses issues about privacy standards and provides an overview of security issues related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act ("HIPAA"). Some of the privacy issues include who must comply, what information is protected, and permissible disclosure of protected information. The overview of security issues covers administrative, physical, and technical safeguards, as well as organizational requirements. Any practitioner who works with employers that sponsor a health plan for their employees should be aware of these issues, as this is a new area of potential risk for those clients.

Governing By Negotiation: The Internet Naming System, Tamar Frankel
Governing By Negotiation: The Internet Naming System, Tamar Frankel
Faculty Scholarship
This Article is about the governance of the Internet naming system. The subject is fascinating, not simply because the naming system is an important system affecting the Internet, although it is; and not because the Internet is important, although it is. The subject is fascinating because it offers a rare opportunity to examine and learn from the evolution of an incoherent governance structure. The naming system is special in that it is the product of a new technology; it reflects the changes and pressures brought by the new technology, and involves the interests of government and private entities, domestic and …

Integrating Remorse And Apology Into Criminal Procedure, Stephanos Bibas, Richard A. Bierschbach
Integrating Remorse And Apology Into Criminal Procedure, Stephanos Bibas, Richard A. Bierschbach
Articles
The article argues that the criminal justice system's current focus on punishment and procedural efficiency overlooks the transformative potential of remorse and apology in repairing moral and relational harm caused by crime. It advocates for a relational approach that integrates mechanisms like restorative justice and victim-offender mediation to foster healing, reconciliation, and reintegration of offenders into society.
