Chain Reactions: Archives And The Value Chain In Chemistry's Scientific Communications, Anna K. Gold Oct 2004

Chain Reactions: Archives And The Value Chain In Chemistry's Scientific Communications, Anna K. Gold

Robert E. Kennedy Library

We have heard a great deal about problems of expensive scientific journals; in this last session we are focusing on some solutions to those problems. In order to see our way out of the present cost crisis, we need to broaden our view beyond the value chain associated with scientific journals: journals are part of a much larger value chain of scientific communication. This communication occurs before, during, inside, outside, and after the journal article is published. This suggests that we ought to reframe the question posed in this workshop, and ask ourselves not about the “needs” of chemical and …

Quantifying The Effects Of Aging On The Mechanical Properties Of Medical Grade Polycarbonate And Uv Cured Adhesives, Christopher James Lewis Oct 2004

Quantifying The Effects Of Aging On The Mechanical Properties Of Medical Grade Polycarbonate And Uv Cured Adhesives, Christopher James Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

Advances in engineering polymer technology have created a generation of high strength-to-weight materials for medical applications, with virtually no adverse interactions with body fluids. Polycarbonate is a widely used engineering polymer, and is often used in connection with ultra-violet light (UV) cured adhesives. Because of the chemical complexity of polymers, little is known about their actual aging characteristics. By characterizing the effects of aging, storage environment, and sterilization on medical grade polycarbonate/adhesive system properties, more accurate failure predictions can be made. In this thesis, efforts to better understand the effects of accelerated aging on a medical grade polycarbonate and UV …

Integrative Governance In Northern Ireland, Melvin J. Dubnick, Elizabeth M. Meehan Oct 2004

Integrative Governance In Northern Ireland, Melvin J. Dubnick, Elizabeth M. Meehan

Faculty Publications

We view integrative governance as a varied response to un-centering and de-centering trends and offer a framework that highlights three ‘paths’ to integration: proactive, reactive and emergent. This frame is applied to Northern Ireland and we draw some preliminary conclusions about both the potential usefulness of the model and the insights it generates about Northern Ireland governance. The principal insight is that reactive integration tends to suppress the emergence of third sector alternatives while proactive integration has the opposite effect.
