New Product Launch Decisions Under Competition And Uncertainty: A Real Options And Game-Theoretic Approach To New Product Development, James O. Ostler Dec 2004

New Product Launch Decisions Under Competition And Uncertainty: A Real Options And Game-Theoretic Approach To New Product Development, James O. Ostler

Theses and Dissertations

New product development is central to many firms' future success. Not only as a means to continue to maintain their piece of the market, but product development can also be a strategic means for a company to diversify, and/or alter focus to adapt to changing market conditions.

Most of the research in new product development has been on how to do it cheaper and faster than the next guy. However, early commercialization does not guarantee a position of strength in the market. Failures of EMI in CT scanners and Xerox in personal computers illustrate that being first to market does …

An In Vitro Evaluation Of Chitosan As A Biomaterial Focusing On The Effects Of The Degree Of Deacetylation, Virginia Hamilton Dec 2004

An In Vitro Evaluation Of Chitosan As A Biomaterial Focusing On The Effects Of The Degree Of Deacetylation, Virginia Hamilton

Theses and Dissertations

The material characteristics play a role in the suitability of chitosan for biomedical applications. This is not surprising since the degree of deacetylation of chitosan influences antimicrobial activity, degradation rate, immune reaction and mechanical properties such as strength and elongation. This study examines chitosans of variable material characteristics for wound and bone healing applications. Chitosan films of 76, 78, 80, 87, 91, 92, and 95% degree of deacetylation were tested in vitro for cellular responses by fibroblast and bone cell lines. The in vitro responses were compared to the material characteristics of molecular weight, degree of deacetylation, swelling index, and …

Development Of A Distributed Model For The Biological Water Processor Of The Water Recovery System For Nasa Advanced Life Support Program, Sachin Vishwas Puranik Dec 2004

Development Of A Distributed Model For The Biological Water Processor Of The Water Recovery System For Nasa Advanced Life Support Program, Sachin Vishwas Puranik

Theses and Dissertations

The Water Recovery System (WRS) is one of the necessary subsystems in an Advanced Life Support program. It regenerates potable water by processing wastewater generated on a space shuttle or on a space station. The Biological Water Processor (BWP) is one of the complex subsections of WRS that involves processes described by continuous time as well as discrete event dynamics. Such systems can be modeled as hybrid dynamical systems in MATLAB/Stateflow. The following state variables of the BWP have been simulated in MATLAB: Pressure drop across Organic Carbon Oxidation Reactor (OCOR), Pressure drop across nitrification reactor, nitrifier flow rate, total …

Imposing Cyclic Strain On Osteogenic Stem Cells: The Effects Of Strain Levels And Repetition Of Cyclic Strain In An Implant Environment, Daniel Henlee Smith Dec 2004

Imposing Cyclic Strain On Osteogenic Stem Cells: The Effects Of Strain Levels And Repetition Of Cyclic Strain In An Implant Environment, Daniel Henlee Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Bone and bone cells have been shown to respond to mechanical forces placed upon them. Particularly, strain plays an important role in osteogenic differentiation of marrow cells around artificial implants in bone. These strains, depending on their magnitude, duration, and repetition, can alter the proliferation and matrix synthesis of osteoblasts. To test how strain parameters influence osteoblast behavior, a four-point bending apparatus was used to impose cyclic strain on osteogenic stem cells isolated from rats and seeded on titanium plates. Cells were stimulated at 1 Hz for 15 minutes daily and compared to an unstrained control. Stimulation occurred at two …

Gas Hydrates To Capture And Sequester Co2, Tao Ding Dec 2004

Gas Hydrates To Capture And Sequester Co2, Tao Ding

Theses and Dissertations

Reducing atmospheric CO2, a main source of greenhouse gas, has been accentuated recently. One focus is capture, separation, and sequestration of industrial CO2. As a hydrate former, CO2 forms hydrates at moderate temperatures and pressures. This phenomenon could be utilized to capture and separate CO2 from flue gases, and also has the potential to sequester CO2 in the deep sds. This research investigated the CO2-N2 separation efficiency of gas hydrates; it investigated the sequestration potential of CO2 hydrates in ocean sediments. The catalytic effect of surfactants in these processes was investigated. A fluorosurfactant FS-62 was mixed with SDS at 100ppm/1000ppm …

Cultural Awareness Levels Of Professionals And Students At Mississippi State University: International Education's Challenge, William Edward Stephen Cottrell Dec 2004

Cultural Awareness Levels Of Professionals And Students At Mississippi State University: International Education's Challenge, William Edward Stephen Cottrell

Theses and Dissertations

The literature indicates that America's demographic transformation is becoming a priority issue for higher education. Consequently, progressive educational leadership has a stake in international education development. Since enhanced cultural awareness is essential to this process, its scarcity in terms of measurable evidence has given rise to this study. Research questions included: (1) What is the level of cultural awareness among professional employees and students at Mississippi State University as measured by the Culture Shock Inventory Measurement Table? (2) Do demographic factors relate to cultural awareness levels of professional employees and students at Mississippi State University? (3) What role does international …

An Investigation Of Host Site Participants' Perceptions Of A Shared Distance Learning Experience, Debra Lynn Williams-Carter Dec 2004

An Investigation Of Host Site Participants' Perceptions Of A Shared Distance Learning Experience, Debra Lynn Williams-Carter

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate host site participants' perceptions of a shared distance learning experience. The participants for the study were 12 students enrolled in the course, Teaching Strategies in Elementary Education at Hunt University during the fall semester of 2000. The course was offered simultaneously to students at a distance site. Both groups of students received instruction from the same instructor during the course. According to the review of the literature numerous studies have been conducted to obtain data from the perspectives of distance site students. However, no literature was found that pertained specifically to the …

Beyond Ethical Leadership: Striving For Authentic Leadership In A New Corporate Context, Mark N. Langseth Dec 2004

Beyond Ethical Leadership: Striving For Authentic Leadership In A New Corporate Context, Mark N. Langseth

Theses and Graduate Projects

Recent corporate scandals in the U.S. - at Enron, WorldCom, Arthur Andersen, and elsewhere - have prompted renewed interest in business ethics. Consistent with the vast majority of organizational leadership literature, however, this new interest in ethics is overwhelmingly focused on the internal practices of corporations. In both the modern organizational leadership literature and recent literature regarding corporate ethics, very little attention has been given to examining leadership from the perspective of the ultimate societal (external) impact of either an organization's products/services or the processes by which they are produced. This essay presents a model of "authentic leadership" in which …

Basecalling For Traces Derived For Multiple Templates, Aaron Tenney Dec 2004

Basecalling For Traces Derived For Multiple Templates, Aaron Tenney

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Three methods for analyzing sequencing traces derived from sequencing reactions containing two DNA templates are presented. All rely on alignment to a segment of assembled genomic sequence containing the original template sequence. Spliced alignment algorithms are used so that traces derived from processed mRNA can be analyzed. The main application of these techniques is the elucidation of alternately spliced transcripts. Several experimental verification of one of the techniques is presented including testing on a set of 48 alternately spliced targets from the human genome and 47 negative controls.
