Decorator Or Narrator: A Contextualisation Of Slavic And Australian Pattern Making And Its Relationship To My Painting Practice, Iliana H. Jordanov Jan 2004

Decorator Or Narrator: A Contextualisation Of Slavic And Australian Pattern Making And Its Relationship To My Painting Practice, Iliana H. Jordanov

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In this thesis, I will examine pattern making in art practice from two cultural perceptions, Slavic and Australian. Existing differences between the two cultural backgrounds will be used to debate how pattern is understood by the viewer or practiced by an artist in a particular chosen environment. The central argument focuses on pattern as a decorator and/or a narrator. I will examine the outcomes and changes in narrative pattern according to cultural context and exchange. By introducing Slavic pattern into contemporary (Australian) art practice, I examine how traditional cultural values and functions change. In discussing the processes of changes that …

Brand Color Tolerances: A Comparison Of Memory Color Vs. Paired Comparison Color Matching, Allison K. Santoro Jan 2004

Brand Color Tolerances: A Comparison Of Memory Color Vs. Paired Comparison Color Matching, Allison K. Santoro

Theses

The proposed thesis topic is to compare two methods of judging brand colors, paired comparison and memory color. Today's current practice for press approval in the graphic arts industry involves an individual using a sensitive comparison of a proof to a press sheet. The resulting piece is later viewed by a user who will have no knowledge of the original (a proof). The exception, however, is the memory of the "logo" or brand color that the user may have. The argument can be made that the additional cost of a press approval is justified by the possibility of accruing extra …

The Role Of Advertising Agencies On The Demand For Personalized Communications, Kathryn C. Moore Jan 2004

The Role Of Advertising Agencies On The Demand For Personalized Communications, Kathryn C. Moore

Theses

A personalized campaign allows an agency to utilize its clients' records to reach its audience by sending targeted messages and promotions, which often results in improved business results. This pull is achieved by using detailed databases with a large quantity of information about existing and potential customers. This information, in the form of text, data and sometimes images, is then placed into a document in a way that is easy for customers to locate and act upon. Variable data technology should be embraced by advertising agencies as a definite way to improve response rates and generate more business. But what …

A Study Into The Utilization Of Value-Added Services In Commercial Printing Companies, Kalpana Chhita

Theses

Today's printing industry is in a state of transition. It has become an industry that no longer solely relies on print for sustainability. Thus, printers as well as print service providers are incorporating different strategies into their business models to provide the types of services that customers now require in order to achieve their own business goals (Cummings and Chhita, 2004). This research was conducted in an effort to better understand the impact of these emerging trends. The primary objectives were: 1) to clearly understand the changing business dynamics in the printing industry, 2) to determine whether there is a …

Goal Directed Visual Search Based On Color Cues: Co-Operative Effectes Of Top-Down & Bottom-Up Visual Attention, Vishal S. Vaingankar Jan 2004

Goal Directed Visual Search Based On Color Cues: Co-Operative Effectes Of Top-Down & Bottom-Up Visual Attention, Vishal S. Vaingankar

Theses

Focus of Attention plays an important role in perception of the visual environment. Certain objects stand out in the scene irrespective of observers' goals. This form of attention capture, in which stimulus feature saliency captures our attention, is of a bottom-up nature. Often prior knowledge about objects and scenes can influence our attention. This form of attention capture, which is influenced by higher level knowledge about the objects, is called top-down attention. Top-down attention acts as a feedback mechanism for the feed-forward bottom-up attention. Visual search is a result of a combined effort of the top-down (cognitive cue) system and …

Effects Of Sputter Deposition Parameters On Stress In Tantalum Films With Applications To Chemical Mechanical Planarization Of Copper, Jeffrey L. Perry Jan 2004

Effects Of Sputter Deposition Parameters On Stress In Tantalum Films With Applications To Chemical Mechanical Planarization Of Copper, Jeffrey L. Perry

Theses

Attempts to introduce a CMP process for copper damascene features at Rochester Institute of Technology were stymied by adhesion failures of the Ta/Cu film stack. This work was undertaken to investigate the effect of stress in the films on adhesion and to develop a viable CMP process for Cu damascene technology. In depth studies of stress as a function of sputter deposition conditions revealed that stress in Ta layers could vary from -1700 MPa compression to +800 MPa tensile for deposition pressures over a range of 2-20 mTorr for films having a nominal thickness of 0.25 μm. For a fixed …

Teaching And Learning From The Mediations In Barry Werth's Damages, Leonard L. Riskin Jan 2004

Teaching And Learning From The Mediations In Barry Werth's Damages, Leonard L. Riskin

Journal of Dispute Resolution

The two mediations in the book Damages, illuminate much about mediation in today's litigation environment - even though they took place in 1993 and each was, in its own way, quite unusual. for that reason - and because we have few good detailed descriptions of real mediations - I have used these two mediations to teach in a variety of settings. First, they served as one of several focuses in the course based on this book, called Damages: A Case Study, that we taught at the University of Missouri-Columbia, School of Law in the winter 2002 and 2003 semesters. In …

Experiences Of Collaborative Law: Preliminary Results From The Collaborative Lawyering Research Project, Julie Macfarlane Jan 2004

Experiences Of Collaborative Law: Preliminary Results From The Collaborative Lawyering Research Project, Julie Macfarlane

Journal of Dispute Resolution

For more than two decades, some of the most respected scholars in the field of dispute resolution have questioned the apparently intrinsic bias of litigation against cooperative, problem-solving outcomes for clients. The continuing discussion focuses on the increasingly adversarial and "uncivil" character of much civil litigation, especially commercial litigation;' the abuse of discovery practices to extend and escalate conflict and costs; the pressure to compete rather than to cooperate when facing the uncertainty of the other side's next move (the classic prisoner's dilemma described by Mnookin and Gilson); an observed tendency towards a reduction of counseling and "deliberative wisdom" provided …

Assessing Mediator Performance: The Usefulness Of Participant Questionnaires, Roselle L. Wissler, Robert W. Rack Jr. Jan 2004

Assessing Mediator Performance: The Usefulness Of Participant Questionnaires, Roselle L. Wissler, Robert W. Rack Jr.

Journal of Dispute Resolution

As part of their obligation to provide quality services, courts that offer mediation need to periodically assess the performance of mediators to whom they refer cases. One of several methods that have been proposed for monitoring mediator quality is participant assessments of mediator performance. The present article reports an empirical study that examined attorneys' assessments of the skillfulness of mediators in a federal appellate civil medations program. The attorneys rated some of the mediators as being more skillful than others, and these differences generally remained whether or not favorable outcomes were achieved in mediation. In addition, the attorneys rated individual …

Running Head: Trademark Law And Keyword Advertising, Elizabeth Warner

Theses

The growth of the Internet as a commercial medium has brought about new concerns in terms of the future of intellectual property law. The newest form of advertising, keyword advertising, has created much controversy within the legal system. In the latest case, Google, Inc. v. American Wallpaper and Blind Factory, Google has requested that courts make a decision as to what constitutes infringement in terms of the sale of keywords for advertising on the Internet. The case is still in pending process. Through an economic analysis of trademarks and advertising on the Internet, this paper seeks to demonstrate that the …
