The Sibling Study: How Does Having A Sibling With A Mental Disorder Affect The Lives Of College Students, Anna Czipri '04 Jan 2004

The Sibling Study: How Does Having A Sibling With A Mental Disorder Affect The Lives Of College Students, Anna Czipri '04

Honors Projects

Although there are many positive outcomes of growing up with a sibling having a psychological or behavioral disorder, typical siblings can potentially experience harmful effects of managing and coping with the special demands and stresses of having a sibling with these kinds of difficulties. The college years are often a time to restructure sibling relationships. It is a time when young adults experience what it is like to be away from home for the first time, develop new groups of friends, and start new behavior patterns, attitudes, goals, and relationships that call for a more mature individual. The current study …

User Authentication And Supervision In Networked Systems, Paul Steven Dowland Jan 2004

User Authentication And Supervision In Networked Systems, Paul Steven Dowland

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This thesis considers the problem of user authentication and supervision in networked systems. The issue of user authentication is one of on-going concern in modem IT systems with the increased use of computer systems to store and provide access to sensitive information resources. While the traditional username/password login combination can be used to protect access to resources (when used appropriately), users often compromise the security that these methods can provide. While alternative (and often more secure) systems are available, these alternatives usually require expensive hardware to be purchased and integrated into IT systems. Even if alternatives are available (and financially …

Management Of Marine Wildlife Disturbance, C. Kelly, G. A. Glegg, C. D. Speedie Jan 2004

Management Of Marine Wildlife Disturbance, C. Kelly, G. A. Glegg, C. D. Speedie

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

In recent years, concerns have been raised about the health and status of a range of marine species in UK waters, including the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus). Disturbance and harassment from increasing inshore leisure traffic and a fascinated public have been identified as potential threats to these large marine species. This concern is coupled with a legislative framework that is perceived to be less effective in protecting key species than it could be, and difficult to enforce. This study examined the extent of anthropogenic disturbance to a range of marine wildlife in inshore waters around …

Stroke In Devon: Knowledge Was Good, But Action Was Poor., C. Carroll, J. Hobart, C. Fox, L. Teare, J. Gibson

Peninsula Medical School

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Effective implementation of early treatment strategies for stroke requires prompt admission to hospital. There are several reasons for delayed admission. Good awareness should facilitate early admission. We identified local targets for education. METHODS: Four groups, each of 40 people, completed questionnaires to determine their knowledge of stroke symptoms and risk factors, and the action they took or would take in the event of a stroke. The groups were: patients with a diagnosis of stroke or TIA (within 48 hrs of admission); patients at risk of stroke; the general population; and nurses. RESULTS: Forty per cent of stroke …

Fabrication Or Induction Of Illness In A Child: A Critical Review Of Labels And Literature Using Electronic Libraries, Kenneth Burns Jan 2004

Fabrication Or Induction Of Illness In A Child: A Critical Review Of Labels And Literature Using Electronic Libraries, Kenneth Burns

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper argues that the variance between professionals on the use of terminology to describe and define this form of child maltreatment may lead to a loss of focus on children's welfare. The author argues that the label Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy has outlived its use and recommends the adoption of a new label 'Fabrication or Induction of Illness in a Child'. The article presents a critical analysis of the titles of 41 0 unique library entries collated from electronic libraries to discern the prevalence of labels to denote the fabrication or induction of illness in children. The article also …

Redesigning The Teacher Education Technology Course To Emphasize Integration, Charles R. Graham, Richard Culatta, Mitchell Pratt, Richard West

Faculty Publications

Teacher education programs in the United States are trying to equip tomorrow’s teachers with the technology skills needed to impact learning in the classroom. During the past decade there has been a realization that teaching technology skills alone is not adequate– pre-service teachers must also learn how to integrate the use of technology into their curriculum. This paper describes BYU’s instructional technology course and the design process that a team of instructors went through to redesign the course in order to put greater emphasis on technology integration. An iterative redesign approach was used. Several iterations of the course redesign will …

The Deferred Action Program Of The Bureau Of Citizenship And Immigration Services: A Possible Remedy For Impossible Immigration Cases Jan 2004

The Deferred Action Program Of The Bureau Of Citizenship And Immigration Services: A Possible Remedy For Impossible Immigration Cases

San Diego Law Review

This beneficent operations instruction permitted two alternative interpretations, each of which was taken up by the federal courts. In the case of Nicholas v. INS, the petitioner asked the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to overrule the district director’s decision to deny his nonpriority status application. The court determined that the operations instruction confers a “substantive benefit upon the alien, rather than setting up an administrative convenience,”and thus is essentially a legislative rule requiring a strict standard of application, and not one allowing the INS a significant amount of discretion. The Fifth Circuit held in Soon Bok Yoon v. INS …

Likelihood Of Confusion Jan 2004

Likelihood Of Confusion

San Diego Law Review

The primary objective of this Article is to illustrate the tendency of judges to inappropriately rely on personal intuition and subjective, internalized stereotypes when ruling on trademark disputes. Where jurists perceive consumers as ludicrously easily confused, trademark holders can exploit these views to secure broad trademark “rights,” often without offering a shred of evidentiary corroboration concerning such confusion. As a consequence, the proof required to support allegations that a trademark usage creates a likelihood of confusion is potentially lessened in all cases, making trademarks normatively stronger, broader, and ever easier to “protect” for mark holders. Whether consumers realistically benefit from …

Obstructing Justice: The Rise And Fall Of The Aedpa Jan 2004

Obstructing Justice: The Rise And Fall Of The Aedpa

San Diego Law Review

From 1994 through as late as August 2001, the United States intelligence community1

received information that terrorists had seriously contemplated using airplanes as instruments for carrying out international terrorist attacks.2

This method of attack was clearly “discussed in terrorist circles,” yet community analysts demonstrated little effort to strategically counter such terrorist groups. Moreover, in 1998, U.S. intelligence received specific information that “a group of unidentified Arabs planned to fly an explosive-laden plane from a foreign country into the World Trade Center.” In July 2001, senior government officials were warned of “a significant terrorist attack against U.S. and/or Israeli interests in …

Quality Assurance Of Cervical Smear Slide Inspection Using A Novel Eye-Tracking Technique, Lee Roy Coombes Jan 2004

Quality Assurance Of Cervical Smear Slide Inspection Using A Novel Eye-Tracking Technique, Lee Roy Coombes

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

A novel objective quality assurance system for smear slide screening is investigated in this thesis. A method of data validation was developed that compares data from an eye tracked image display, machine image colour texture analysis and expert judgements in a statistical manner to identify salient areas of cervical cytological images. These data are used to construct screener performance profiles, which have been compared to screener experience. The experimental methodology is described and how the screener performance profile is constructed. Results from a study of 10 screeners, checkers and pathologists are presented showing predicted trends of human performance. Relations to …

A Model For Predicting The Performance Of Ip Videoconferencing, Licha Mued Jan 2004

A Model For Predicting The Performance Of Ip Videoconferencing, Licha Mued

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

With the incorporation of free desktop videoconferencing (DVC) software on the majority of the world's PCs, over the recent years, there has, inevitably, been considerable interest in using DVC over the Internet. The growing popularity of DVC increases the need for multimedia quality assessment. However, the task of predicting the perceived multimedia quality over the Internet Protocol (IP) networks is complicated by the fact that the audio and video streams are susceptible to unique impairments due to the unpredictable nature of IP networks, different types of task scenarios, different levels of complexity, and other related factors. To date, a standard …

Early Detection Of Dementia Using The Human Electroencephalogram, Geoffrey T Henderson Jan 2004

Early Detection Of Dementia Using The Human Electroencephalogram, Geoffrey T Henderson

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Improved life expectancy has led to a significant increase in the number of people in the high-riskage groups that will develop Alzheimer's disease and other dementia. Efforts are being made to develop treatments that slow the progress of these diseases. However, unless a sufferer is diagnosed in the early stages the treatments cannot give the maximum benefit. Therefore, there isan urgent need for a practical, decision support tool that will enable the earliest possible detectionof dementia within the large at-risk population.Current techniques such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) that are used to diagnose andassess neurological disorders require specialist equipment and …

Mobile And Accessible Dublin: An Application Of The Prospective Methodology In Developing A Vision For The Future Integration Of Transportation And Land Use In Dublin, Elzbieta Krawczyk

Articles

Contemporary cities can be characterised by a high pace of change and the growing complexity of their systems. Technological, economic and social evolution brings transformation that needs to be dealt with and accommodated in order to sustain consistent harmonious growth. Many cities are not prepared to adapt to these changes. This results in a vast range of urban problems. The rapid growth of Dublin during the last decade has intensified infrastructural and transportation problems. A number of institutions have been addressing these difficulties through the application of various solutions. This paper presents an attempt to address the lack of efficient …

Soap Opera, Com Mercialisation An D The Proletarian Isation Of Cultural Production, Edward Brennan Jan 2004

Soap Opera, Com Mercialisation An D The Proletarian Isation Of Cultural Production, Edward Brennan

Articles

Abstract This article is based in a broader study of the production of Fair City, Ireland’s most popular television soap opera. The study argues that such shows are potentially important in civil society. They can promote discussion and debate on hidden or taboo social issues. They may thus inform public opinion. Until recently the potential role of soap opera in civil society has largely been overlooked. The research examined the social issues that Fair City could introduce to public discussion by examining its production process. It found the main limits on what the show could and could not say to …

An Agent-Based Approach To Adaptive Navigational Support Within 3d-Environments, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, Gregory O'Hare, Brian Duffy, Alan Martin Jan 2004

An Agent-Based Approach To Adaptive Navigational Support Within 3d-Environments, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, Gregory O'Hare, Brian Duffy, Alan Martin

Conference papers

his paper investigates mechanisms and approaches to assisting user navigation and exploration within 3-dimensional worlds. Specifically it advocates the deployment of an agentbased approach to dynamic system assistance and intervention. A performance equation is presented in a basic and an extended version, which is used to activate system interventions and to evaluate user performances online and offline. The measure is derived via a light-weight computationally inexpensive masking approach. We describe some navigation experiments and the results of navigational intervention via the damping of the sensitivity of the navigational keys. Interestingly the navigational assistance does not yield improvements in the subjects’ …

School Climate, Culture, And Educators’ Beliefs And Practices In Motivation: An Exploratory Study, Sarah Galloway Jan 2004

School Climate, Culture, And Educators’ Beliefs And Practices In Motivation: An Exploratory Study, Sarah Galloway

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study seeks to examine one aspect of school climate, school culture, through the lens of achievement goal theory in order to link the broad construct of climate and educational practices. Achievement goal theory is a motivational theory that provides a framework for organizing and construing cognitive and affective responses to achievement related situations. An underlying assumption of the current study is that goal structures can positively influence school climate and lead to positive outcomes for students. Goal structures were investigated through educator perceptions of goal structures and educators self-reports of their educational practices. Overall, the 124 educators who responded …

Identifying School-Aged Children At-Risk To Develop An Eating Disorder, Natalie Jean Muth Jan 2004

Identifying School-Aged Children At-Risk To Develop An Eating Disorder, Natalie Jean Muth

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Current research supports that school-based eating disorder prevention programs have yielded unsuccessful results. Hypotheses presented in chapter one suggest failure to implement effective prevention programs are related to problematic screening attempts and a lack of focus on targeting prevention at the primary level. Chapter two outlines a review of literature analyzing eating disorder identification, history, prevalence, assessment and existing prevention programs. Chapter three describes the present study, which uses an eating disorder assessment instrument to screen a consenting sample of forth through twelfth graders. Results, presented in chapter four, suggest (a) that a significant number of students could benefit for …

Sport Nutrition Education: A Study Of Nutritional Practices And Knowledge Among Mississippi Valley Conference High School Athletic Programs In The State Of Iowa, Sara Lynn Hallgren

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

High school athletes are becoming more involved in nutritional supplementation and including foods in their diet high in fat and sugar through increased consumption of "convenience foods" and fast-food. These poor eating behaviors and use of supplementation are reasons why it is becoming increasingly important to bring sport nutrition education to the high school level. It is imperative these athletes receive appropriate education needed to make educated choices about food selections to meet nutritional needs for their sport and development. The purpose of this study is to determine the status of sport nutrition education among Mississippi Valley Conference high school …

Abdominal Muscle Activation When Performing Abdominal Exercises On A Gym Ball And A Flat Surface, Wesley Brian Zwiefel

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the study is to determine if there is a difference in muscle activation when performing three common abdominal exercises, isolating the rectus abdominis and external obliques, on a contoured gym ball compared to a flat surface. Thirty female volunteers, aged 19-24, performed an abdominal crunch (AC), an abdominal crunch with a twist (ACWT), and a side-lying crunch (SC) on both a flat table and on a gym ball. A stabilization base was utilized to control instability when on the ball. Exercises were performed in random order to prevent the first exercise to avoid the first exercise from …

Herbal Dietary Supplement Education In Midwestern Medical Schools, Wendi Suzanne Sobaski Jan 2004

Herbal Dietary Supplement Education In Midwestern Medical Schools, Wendi Suzanne Sobaski

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In the past decade dietary supplement sales have nearly doubled. This dramatic increase in supplement use stems from the passing of Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA). The DSHEA tied the Food and Drug Administration's hands from regulating dietary supplements. Therefore these chemical entities which act like pharmaceuticals in many ways are being created, manufactured, and sold without standardized safety testing. Wide availability, cost effectiveness, and claims by supplement manufacturers to treat serious ailments make supplements, especially herbal products, an appealing alternative to traditional medical practice. Manufacturers' claims often times confuse consumers and leave the consumer searching …

Protecting Us From Pictures: Gender And Support For Legal Restrictions On Pornography, Elizabeth Lynne Chivers Jan 2004

Protecting Us From Pictures: Gender And Support For Legal Restrictions On Pornography, Elizabeth Lynne Chivers

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Research and debate concerning pornography has been controversial, primarily focusing on the perceived harmful effects. The current study addresses support for legal restrictions and the effect of gender on this support. Based on the internalization of gender roles, perspectives, and identities through socialization, gender is constructed differently for men and women. Because this socialization is constructed around an oppositional male-female dichotomy, men and women experience the world differently. While there have been previous research addressing gender differences, the gendered nature of attitudes merits further study. The current study is based on data collected for 451 undergraduate students at the University …

Dig Deep: From Down Under, So Shall I Emerge, Lori Ann Dale Jan 2004

Dig Deep: From Down Under, So Shall I Emerge, Lori Ann Dale

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

"Dig Deep: From Down Under So Shall I Emerge" is a celebration of who I am; culturally, spiritually, and historically. This body of ceramic sculptures, inclusive of five connected works, has allowed me to better understand myself, my surroundings, and my purpose in life. Through talking to other African American women my age, I have come to realize we are all dealing with similar feelings of displacement. Some stereotypes rooted in oppression have depicted Black Women as being loud angry and having negative attitudes. So being aware of such stereotypes, in the presence of other cultures many Black Women find …
