From Dramaturgy To Theatre As Technology: The Case Of Corporate Theatre, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Iain Mangham Jan 2004

From Dramaturgy To Theatre As Technology: The Case Of Corporate Theatre, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Iain Mangham

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article examines a piece of corporate theatre. Although theatre has entered organization studies through the dramatistic writing of Kenneth Burke and the dramaturgical writings of Erving Goffman, this article is concerned with an approach variously described as organizational, radical, situation or corporate theatre that treats theatre not primarily as a resource, an ontology or a metaphor but as a technology. This approach involves the deployment by an organization of dramatists, actors, directors, set designers, lighting specialists, and musicians to put on performances in front of audiences. Using frameworks derived from studies of theatre a particular piece of corporate theatre …

An Analysis Of Computer-Mediated Communication Technologies As Tools To Enhance Learning., Ana I. Casanova Jan 2004

An Analysis Of Computer-Mediated Communication Technologies As Tools To Enhance Learning., Ana I. Casanova

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The integration of computer-mediated communication (CMC) technologies into the higher educational settings have required faculty to change their roles from the direct instructional model to a model based on constructivists' ideas. CMC instructional tools (ITs) have provided a change by shifting a traditional teacher-centered setting into a teacher facilitator environment. Teacher's professional development has become an important task to effectively integrate technology into their courses. Questions concerning the implementation and value of CMC technologies and their impact in higher education are not yet clear. The purpose of this research study was to determine the extent to which CMC technologies promoted …

Iraq: One Year Later, Mary Ellen O'Connell Jan 2004

Iraq: One Year Later, Mary Ellen O'Connell

Journal Articles

Almost exactly one year ago, during her presidential speech at the 2003 Annual Meeting of the American Society of International Law, Anne-Marie Slaughter spoke of the use of force that began in Iraq shortly before that Annual Meeting. She concluded that the war was unlawful but nevertheless potentially legitimate. That conclusion provoked a great debate from the moment her speech ended. Our purpose today is to take up that debate.

Testing A Model Of Unwanted Pursuit And Stalking, Leila B. Dutton-Greene Jan 2004

Testing A Model Of Unwanted Pursuit And Stalking, Leila B. Dutton-Greene

Open Access Dissertations

Unwanted pursuit and stalking are common, especially among young adults attending college. Cupach and Spitzberg (2004) developed their relational goal pursuit theory to explain unwanted pursuit and stalking. They theorize that unwanted pursuit and stalking develop out of a disjunctive relationship in which one person wants a type of relationship that the other does not. They propose that the interrelated and co-occurring processes of rumination, emotional flooding, and rationalization serve to disinhibit a pursuer' s idea of what is appropriate behavior. Thus, the object perceives the pursuer's behavior as excessive, inappropriate, and perhaps threatening.

I tested a model of unwanted …

Micromechanical Modeling Of Constitutive And Damage Behavior Of Heterogeneous Asphalt Materials, Qingli Dai Jan 2004

Micromechanical Modeling Of Constitutive And Damage Behavior Of Heterogeneous Asphalt Materials, Qingli Dai

Open Access Dissertations

A computational and analytical study has been conducted to develop micromechanical models for heterogeneous particulate asphalt materials. Inelastic, softening and damage-coupled viscoelastic behaviors of the matrix material were considered in studying the micro-structural response of these asphalt composites. Asphalt concrete is composed of aggregates, mastic cement and air voids. The load carrying behavior of such a material is strongly related to the local load transfer between aggregate particles, and this is taken as the microstructural response. The first microstructural model incorporated a network of special frame elements with a stiffness matrix developed to predict the load transfer between cemented particles. …

Management Of Flounder Infectious Necrotizing Enteritis (Fine) In Cultured Juvenile Summer Flounder, Eric Joseph Gauger Jan 2004

Management Of Flounder Infectious Necrotizing Enteritis (Fine) In Cultured Juvenile Summer Flounder, Eric Joseph Gauger

Open Access Dissertations

Knowledge that can be applied towards the diagnosis and prevention of Flounder Infectious Necrotizing Enteritis in summer flounder ( Paralichthys dentatus), caused by the bacterial pathogen Vibrio harveyi, are presented in this research. Biochemical profiles are insufficient to differentiate V. harveyi from other closely related species. Biochemical profiles can, however, be used in conjunction with 16S ribosomal DNA sequencing to provide a reliable method for identifying V. harveyi. A monitoring program for V. harveyi and other potential bacterial pathogens in cultured juvenile summer flounder found that V. harveyi was the most abundant and commonly found bacterial species in juvenile summer …

(2) Are there special issues associated with end-of-life planning that participants believe are different from those faced by heterosexual women? and (3) How do participants describe a good death and what steps might make a good death more likely? The participants consisted of an ethnically diverse sample of 12 self-identified lesbian women between 60 and 80 years of age. Each participant responded to semi-structured interview questions. Each interview was …

Parents' Descriptions Of Ideal Home Nursing Care For Their Technology Dependent Child, Themselves, And Their Families, Michele A. Mendes Jan 2004

Parents' Descriptions Of Ideal Home Nursing Care For Their Technology Dependent Child, Themselves, And Their Families, Michele A. Mendes

Open Access Dissertations

Home care for technology dependent children is one of the fastest growing segments of the U.S. health care industry, but the nursing literature lacks clear directions to guide home care nurses in planning a family-centered practice. The purpose of this study is to address this gap in the literature by eliciting descriptions of ideal home nursing care for technology dependent children from the perspective of their parents, and to compile a comprehensive list of helpful and supportive nursing interventions. A qualitative, descriptive design was used to examine the following research questions: (1) How do parents of technology dependent children describe …

Revaluing The Literary Naturalist: John Burroughs's Emotive Environmental Aesthetics, Stephen Mark Mercier Jan 2004

Revaluing The Literary Naturalist: John Burroughs's Emotive Environmental Aesthetics, Stephen Mark Mercier

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation widens the circle of environmental aesthetics and ecocriticism by considering the role of the emotive in "appreciation." I demonstrate that emotion is a central feature in the literary naturalism of John Burroughs (1837-1921). Burroughs's model for environmental aesthetics combines narrative knowledge, sensory immersion, and emotional responses. Furthermore, I argue that Burroughs's "sentimental" emotions perform crucial roles in politics and therefore have serious implications for environmental consciousness. The rhetorical strategies inherent in Burroughs's paradigm for environmental aesthetics is essential to contemporary efficacious environmental discourse. This dissertation reclaims the importance of emotional affiliation with creatures, particularly birds, and their habitats. …

The Effects Of The Risk Arbitrage Process On The Trading In Securities Involved In Takeovers, Keith M. Moore Jan 2004

The Effects Of The Risk Arbitrage Process On The Trading In Securities Involved In Takeovers, Keith M. Moore

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation consists of an in-depth study of the risk arbitrage process and its effects on the trading of the securities involved in takeover attempts. The first chapter entitled, "Examination of the Effects of Arbitrage Activity on Terminated Takeover Transactions" is a detailed analysis of the performance of target companies' security prices after a merger, tender offer or bear hug transaction is cancelled. In this chapter we examine whether investors can obtain abnormal returns from investing in situations where the arbitrage community unwinds their positions after an acquisition announcement is terminated. In the second chapter, "Return Distribution Changes in Securities …

Evaluation Of Hot-Melt Extrusion Technology To Improve Dissolution Rates Of Poorly Water Soluble Drugs, Rina Chokshi

Open Access Dissertations

The bioavailability of orally administered drugs mainly depends on solubility and permeability. Since the advent of high throughput screening (HTS) in drug discovery process the resultant compounds are often high molecular weight and highly lipophilic, that show poor solubility. Scientists have tried to address solubility issues by various pharmaceutical interventions. Today amongst many methods available to improve solubility and dissolution rate, preparation of solid dispersions and solid solutions has gained enormous attention. Hot-melt extrusion is one of the most widely applied processing technologies in the plastic, rubber and food industry. Today this technology has found its place in the array …

E. coli EDL933 was first isolated in August of 1982 from patients in the United States suffering from an outbreak of bloody diarrhea, which was traced to contaminated hamburgers (8,9,10,11). E. coli O157:H7 infections are …

Cracks In The Foundation: The New Internet Legislation's Hidden Threat To Privacy And Commerce, Joshua Fairfield Jan 2004

Cracks In The Foundation: The New Internet Legislation's Hidden Threat To Privacy And Commerce, Joshua Fairfield

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Scholarship to date has focused on the legal significance of the novelty of the Internet. This scholarship does not describe or predict actual Internet legislation. Instead of asking whether the Internet is so new as to merit new law, legislators and academics should re-evaluate the role of government in orchestrating collective action and change the relative weight of enforcement, deterrence, and incentives in Internet regulations.

A perfect example of the need for this new approach is the recent CANSPAM Act of 2003, which was intended to protect personal privacy and legitimate businesses. However, the law threatens both of these interests, …

The Nd:YAG slab laser was reduced to a rectangular chip component of dimensions 10x12x2mm. The laser was constructed, tested and shown to successfully lase at 1064nm.The slab laser was operated in a pulsed …

Estructuras Paralelas En Pedro Páramo Y The Sound And The Fury, Herlinda Flores Jan 2004

Estructuras Paralelas En Pedro Páramo Y The Sound And The Fury, Herlinda Flores

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In spite of their linguistic and cultural differences, William Faulkner’s The Sound and The Fury and Juan Rulfo’s Pedro Páramo offer striking structural similarities when analyzed within the framework of Comparative Literature. Not only do both novels treat the same fundamental and universal themes, but they also, each in its own right, signify a rupture with a traditional literary form by altering considerably the modalities of the narrative syntagm. Particular economic and socio-historical circumstances led Faulkner and Rulfo to portray their own social reality through two similar narrative currents, Southern Gothic and the Simbolismo mágico, and a comparative study of …

The advantage of this model over the King and Ertekin’s model is the ability of running the model on personal computers, graphical abilities for input and output, and solving the matrices using an internal solver instead of using a commercial solver. The advantage of this model over other existing models is its ease of to use and being inexpensive …

The Effects Of Environmental Chemicals On Glioblastoma Cell Growth., Rebecca L. Merritt Jan 2004

The Effects Of Environmental Chemicals On Glioblastoma Cell Growth., Rebecca L. Merritt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a malignancy known for its rapid progression. During tumor invasion, the breakdown of brain tissue releases lipid-associated foreign contaminants. This study assesses the growth response of two human glioblastoma cell lines, T98G and U138-MG, to environmental chemicals stored within the brain. Proliferative or cytotoxic responses to treatment were determined using an MTS [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5- (3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium] metabolic activity assay and morphological analysis. Although cytotoxic effects were seen in both T98G and U138-MG cells, proliferative responses occurred only in the T98G cell line. DDT, DDE, and PCB 153 were cytotoxic in both lines, while PCB 81 caused cell death …
