Mx: Democracy, Religion, And The Rule Of Law-My Journey, Edwin B. Firmage Jan 2004

Mx: Democracy, Religion, And The Rule Of Law-My Journey, Edwin B. Firmage

Utah Law Review

This is my story of the defeat of the MX missile's proposed basing mode in the Great Basin of the West. Where to begin? I'm reflecting on cancer and MX at this moment. About journeys where we would not go but do. Beginnings are not easy, though the first verses of Genesis and John make them sound so. What was the beginning? A speech? An article? A movement or an organization? My beginning with MX was not when a 1980 press conference was finally held and a blue ribbon committee was announced at the Utah State Capitol.

The Children Of Art (Assisted Reproductive Technology): Should The Law Protect Them From Harm?, Jennifer L. Rosato Jan 2004

The Children Of Art (Assisted Reproductive Technology): Should The Law Protect Them From Harm?, Jennifer L. Rosato

Utah Law Review

Assisted reproductive technology ("ART") has been in existence for twenty-five years with very little oversight or regulation. During this time, many infertile couples, gay and lesbian couples, and single parents have benefited from these procedures, which include in vitro fertilization ("IVF") and intracytoplasmic sperm injection ("ICSI"). In the year 2001, 107,587 ART cycles were reported, which represents a sixty-six percent increase from 1996. This number is likely to increase even further as more older couples try to conceive and more clinics begin to offer ART services. Consequently, fertility is one of the fastest growing areas of medicine.

The Collaborative Integrity Of Open-Source Software, Greg R. Vetter Jan 2004

The Collaborative Integrity Of Open-Source Software, Greg R. Vetter

Utah Law Review

Open-source software is a new order full of transposition and paradox. Copyright licenses promote copying rather than prohibit it. Software teams work better scattered around the world than housed in one place. Free software has higher quality than sold software. The open-source phenomenon is part ideological triumph and part opportunistic pragmatism. There are many facets to this new phenomenon, many ways to better understand what originated it, sustains it, helps it grow, and what may threaten it.

Foucault's Approach To Power: Its Allure And Limits For Collaborative Lawyering, Ascanio Piomelli Jan 2004

Foucault's Approach To Power: Its Allure And Limits For Collaborative Lawyering, Ascanio Piomelli

Utah Law Review

This Article examines the considerable influence that French philosopher Michel Foucault's conceptualization of power has had on U.S. theorists of lawyering for social change. Led by Professors Gerald L6pez of New York University and Lucie White of Harvard, a substantial literature has emerged in the past two decades urging progressive lawyers to reshape their lawyering practices to collaborate more closely with clients and community groups. Proponents of this model of activist law practice have often invoked Foucault and acknowledged that his ideas about power underlie and inform their visions of lawyering. But until this Article, theorists of collaborative lawyering have …

Responses Of The Decapod Crustacean, Carcinus Maenas, Following Exposure To Environmental Contaminants. Development And Application Of Multiple Biomarkers., Giles Marcus Watson Jan 2004

Responses Of The Decapod Crustacean, Carcinus Maenas, Following Exposure To Environmental Contaminants. Development And Application Of Multiple Biomarkers., Giles Marcus Watson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Marine, coastal and estuarine ecosystems continue to be contaminated by anthropogenic chemicals. Improving our mechanistic understanding of the toxicity of environmental pollutants to aquatic organisms is therefore an important priority. This work is focussed on detecting and measuring the molecular, cellular and physiological responses of the shore crab Carcimis maenas following exposure to environmental chemicals, and uses biomarkers to do so. To better understand the response of C.maenas to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) a novel biomarker of exposure to this class of compounds was developed. Direct fluorimetric techniques revealed that the shore crab C.maenas eliminated metabolites of pyrene in the …

The Effects Of Homogeneous Grouping Practices On Talented And Gifted Students, Angela Kurt-Sconsa Jan 2004

The Effects Of Homogeneous Grouping Practices On Talented And Gifted Students, Angela Kurt-Sconsa

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this literature review was to examine research findings about the effects of homogeneous grouping practices on gifted students. As school budgets have been cut, many gifted programs across the country have been impacted. Also, as tracking has become a political faux pas, many gifted programs have been eliminated.

The following are recommendations for education policy makers: realize that one teacher cannot do it all in a classroom with a wide range of abilities; know that content, in addition to grouping, is a main factor in students' advancement; remain flexible with grouping and programming; and try to overcome …

Freedom Of Expression In The Republic Of Georgia: Framing The Attempted Shut-Down Of The Independent Tv Station, George Sulkhanishvili

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to examine the perception and the level of freedom in the media of the Republic of Georgia. The study examines the media’s perception of freedom by identifying the frame newspapers used while covering the event between the government and the independent media outlet. The main interest is to define the predominant frame. A content analysis of 115 news articles of the four Georgian daily newspapers find that responsibility and conflict frames were more frequently used than economic consequences frame and morality frames. The study concludes that the Georgian media have considerable freedom from external …

Propagation Of Thornless Blackberries Utilizing Adventitious Shoots From Root Cuttings, Ellen Thompson, John R. Clark, Curt C. Rom

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Studies were conducted in early 2003 to determine the effect of root source and length on yield of adventitious shoots from root cuttings and on subsequent plant yield for University of Arkansas-developed thornless blackberries. In the first study, roots from ‘Arapaho’ and ‘Apache’ plants grown in an aboveground bed containing commercial potting soil were compared to field-grown roots. Bed-grown roots averaged 6.9 shoots per 15 cm root cutting while field grown roots averaged 3.4. ‘Apache’ produced more shoots/root cutting compared to Arapaho, (5.9 vs. 4.4 shoots/root cutting, respectively). In a comparison of 15- vs. 30-cm-long root cuttings of ‘Apache’, ‘Arapaho’, …

Chest Compression-Only Cpr As An Alternative To Traditional Cpr In Adult Cardiac Arrest: A Review Of Literature, Karin L. Wille Jan 2004

Chest Compression-Only Cpr As An Alternative To Traditional Cpr In Adult Cardiac Arrest: A Review Of Literature, Karin L. Wille

Graduate Research Papers

Despite the fact that the meaning of the term CPR is widely understood by the general population and that most people understand CPR to be a key to survival in the cardiac arrest victim, CPR is not being performed on the vast majority of people experiencing cardiac arrest. Statistically, approximately 350,000 cardiac arrests occur each year in the United States (AHA, 2003; Weisfeldt and Becker, 2002). Retrospective studies of witnessed cardiac arrest events indicate that no bystander CPR was performed 3 in 55% to 84% of cases (Bossaert, Van Hoeyweghen, and The Cerebral Resuscitation Study Group, 1989; Cummins et al., …

Early Tissue Migration Of And Host Response To Brugia Pahangi In Gerbils, Kristina Houpe Porthouse Jan 2004

Early Tissue Migration Of And Host Response To Brugia Pahangi In Gerbils, Kristina Houpe Porthouse

LSU Master's Theses

The host-parasite interaction during early filarial nematode migration is poorly understood. The objective of this study was to develop a model of early cutaneous filarid migration using Brugia pahangi in the jird (gerbil) host and measure the histologic and cytokine responses during this period. Male gerbils were intradermally inoculated in the left hindlimb with 100 B. pahangi L3 then necropsied at 3 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, 7 days, and 28 days post-infection. Larvae were recovered and tissues collected for histology and cytokine measurement. At 3 hours, most larvae (96.3%) were recovered from tissues associated with the infection site. Migration …

Media Coverage Of The 2003 Parliamentary Election In The Republic Of Georgia, Baadur Koplatadze Jan 2004

Media Coverage Of The 2003 Parliamentary Election In The Republic Of Georgia, Baadur Koplatadze

LSU Master's Theses

The November 2, 2003, parliamentary election caused a significant political crisis in the Republic of Georgia. During the election campaign, the political parties questioned the desire of the government to carry out a fair election. They blamed President Edward Shevardnadze for fabricating the election. After the election, the opposition parties did not recognize the results and claimed that there were massive fabrications (the number of people who voted was much more than the number of people who were in voters’ list). The public supported this position, and several huge demonstrations demanded the resignation of President Shevardnadze. Two weeks after the …

Effects Of Vegetation Removal On Native Soil Quality In Eastern Arkansas, Lorena Moreno, Kristofor R. Brye Jan 2004

Effects Of Vegetation Removal On Native Soil Quality In Eastern Arkansas, Lorena Moreno, Kristofor R. Brye

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Aboveground vegetation removal practices, such as cutting and baling and burning, can both positively and negatively affect a prairie ecosystem. Burning can stimulate growth and species diversity, but removing vegetation and the nutrients it contains without equal replenishment of those nutrients could cause a steady decline in available soil nutrients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of vegetation removal techniques in a native tallgrass prairie in east-central Arkansas. Soil samples were collected from the top 10 cm in each soil mapping unit that existed in each of three prairie areas that differed by the amount of …
