Self-Consistency Of Vuks Equations For Liquid-Crystal Refractive Indices, Jun Li, Shin-Tson Wu
Self-Consistency Of Vuks Equations For Liquid-Crystal Refractive Indices, Jun Li, Shin-Tson Wu
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Vuks equations correlate the microscopic molecular polarizabilities to the macroscopic refractive indices of anisotropic crystalline materials. For anisotropic liquid crystals, the molecular polarizabilities are difficult to measure directly due to the short- and long-range interactions. We have converted Vuks equations into different forms. By measuring the refractive indices at different temperatures and wavelengths, the Vuks equations can be validated. Five liquid-crystal materials with refractive index ranging from similar to1.46 to similar to1.86 are used to validate the modified Vuks equations. The experimental results agree with the theory very well. Based on the Vuks equations, the molecular polarizabilities of 4-cyano-4-n-pentylbiphenyl are …
Using Noninvasive Wearable Computers To Recognize Human Emotions From Physiological Signals, Christine Laetitia Lisetti, Fatma Nasoz
Using Noninvasive Wearable Computers To Recognize Human Emotions From Physiological Signals, Christine Laetitia Lisetti, Fatma Nasoz
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
We discuss the strong relationship between affect and cognition and the importance of emotions in multimodal human computer interaction (HCl) and user modeling. We introduce the overall paradigm for our multimodal system that aims at recognizing its users' emotions and at responding to them accordingly depending upon the current context or application. We then describe the design of the emotion elicitation experiment we conducted by collecting, via wearable computers, physiological signals from the autonomic nervous system (galvanic skin response, heart rate, temperature) and mapping them to certain emotions (sadness, anger, fear, surprise, frustration, and amusement). We show the results of …
Polarization Switch Using Thick Holographic Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal Grating, Yan-Qing Lu, Fang Du, Shin-Tson Wu
Polarization Switch Using Thick Holographic Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal Grating, Yan-Qing Lu, Fang Du, Shin-Tson Wu
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Theoretical study of the optical diffraction properties of holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (HPDLC)-based thick volume grating was presented. It is found that the HPDLC grating can selectively diffract the s-polarized light only, p-polarized light only, or both s and p beams by selecting suitable grating parameters. When an electric field is applied, the s- and p-polarized lights exhibit different diffraction behaviors and, thus, the tunable dual-state or three-state polarization switching could be realized.
Bandwidth Dependence Of The Heterodyne Efficiency In Low Coherence Interferometry, C. Mujat, A. Dogariu
Bandwidth Dependence Of The Heterodyne Efficiency In Low Coherence Interferometry, C. Mujat, A. Dogariu
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
The effect of radiation bandwidth on the heterodyne detection process is discussed. We show that, although neglected in current formalisms, the spectral changes induced by the scattering process are decreasing the heterodyne detection efficiency. This effect depends on the bandwidth of the radiation used.
Some Suggestions For Keeping National Wildlife Refuges Healthy And Whole, Reed F. Noss
Some Suggestions For Keeping National Wildlife Refuges Healthy And Whole, Reed F. Noss
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
National wildlife refuges have a biological conservation mandate surpassing that of any other category of public land in the United States. The National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act of 1997 forged a statutory requirement to maintain the biological integrity, diversity, and environmental health of refuges, Yet, considerably more guidance from science is needed if this mandate is to be interpreted in a scientifically defensible and biologically conservative manner. After evaluation of the extent to which well-accepted goals and principles of conservation biology are reflected in the wildlife refuge system mandate and in the actual design and management of refuges, it …
Role Of Pump Duration On Temperature And Efficiency Of Up-Conversion In Fluoride Crystals Co-Doped With Ytterbium And Thulium, Alexandra Rapaport, Janet Milliez, Michael Bass, Arlete Cassanho, Hans Jenssen
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Pump pulse duration is shown to determine the maximum efficiency of the up conversion process in ytterbium, thulium co-doped fluoride crystals through its role in determining the emitter temperature reached. We show that up-conversion efficiencies should only be measured when using the same pumping conditions as would be used in a proposed application and that thermal management of the up converting material is critical to optimized performance.
Expression And Regulation Of A Silent Operon, Hyf, Coding For Hydrogenase 4 Isoenzyme In Escherichia Coli, William T. Self, Adnan Hasona, K. T. Shanmugan
Expression And Regulation Of A Silent Operon, Hyf, Coding For Hydrogenase 4 Isoenzyme In Escherichia Coli, William T. Self, Adnan Hasona, K. T. Shanmugan
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
On the basis of hyf-lacZ fusion studies, the hyf operon of Escherichia coli, noted for encoding the fourth hydrogenase isoenzyme (HYD4), is not expressed at a significant level in a wild-type strain. However, mutant FhlA proteins (constitutive activators of the hyc-encoded hydrogenase 3 isoenzyme) activated hyf-lacZ. HYfR, an FhlA homolog encoded by the hyfR gene present at the end of the hyf operon, also activated transcription of hyf-lacZ but did so only when hyfR was expressed from a heterologous promoter. The HYD4 isoenzyme did not substitute for HYD3 in H-2 production. Optimum expression of hyf-lacZ required the presence of cyclic …

Model Of Wide-Angle Optical Field Propagation Using Scalar Diffraction Theory, Vesselin Shaoulov, Ravi Vijaya Satya, Guy Schiavone, Eric Clarkson, Jannick Rolland
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
A generalized nonparaxial theoretical framework based on the scalar diffraction theory is developed to describe the propagation of an optical field through a linear optical system with quasi-monochromatic spatially incoherent illumination. Software implementation of this theoretical framework on single and multiple processor platforms was developed and simulated results of the imaging process through optical aberration-corrected optics are presented for both in-focus and out-of-focus imaging, validating the first-order nonparaxial model.

Omi/Htra2 Promotes Cell Death By Binding And Degrading The Anti-Apoptotic Protein Ped/Pea-15, Alessandra Trencia, Francesca Fiory, Maria Alessandra Maitan, Pasquale Vito, Alessia Paola Maria Barbagallo, Anna Prefetti, Claudia Miele, Paola Ungaro, Francesco Oriente, Lucia Cilenti, Antonis S. Zervos, Pietro Formisano, Francesco Beguinot
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
ped/pea-15 is a ubiquitously expressed 15-kDa protein featuring a broad anti-apoptotic function. In a yeast two-hybrid screen, the pro-apoptotic Omi/HtrA2 mitochondrial serine protease was identified as a specific interactor of the ped/pea-15 death effector domain. Omi/HtrA2 also bound recombinant ped/pea-15 in vitro and co-precipitated with ped/pea-15 in 293 and HeLa cell extracts. In these cells, the binding of Omi/HtrA2 to ped/pea-15 was induced by UVC exposure and followed the mitochondrial release of Omi/HtrA2 into the cytoplasm. Upon UVC exposure, cellular ped/pea-15 protein expression levels decreased. This effect was prevented by the ucf-101 specific inhibitor of the Omi/HtrA2 proteolytic activity, in …

Coupled-Wave Analysis Of Apodized Volume Gratings, J. M. Tsui, C. Thompson, V. Mehta, Jeffrey M. Roth, V. I. Smirnov, L. B. Glebov
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
This work presents the use of longitudinal refractive index modulation (apodization) in photosensitive glass for improved sidelobe suppression in volume holographic optical elements. We develop a numerical model for both uniform and apodized volume holograms based on rigorous coupled-wave analysis. We validate the model by comparison with a transmissive 1.55-mum uniform volume grating in photothermorefractive glass. We then apply our numerical model to calculate the spectral response of apodized gratings. The numerical results demonstrate that apodization of the refractive index modulation envelope improves spectral selectivity and reduces first and second-order side-lobe peaks by up to 33 and 65 dB, respectively. …
Hurricane Loss Estimation Models - Opportunities For Improving The State Of The Art, Charles C. Watson Jr., Mark E. Johnson
Hurricane Loss Estimation Models - Opportunities For Improving The State Of The Art, Charles C. Watson Jr., Mark E. Johnson
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
The results of hurricane loss models are used regularly for multibillion dollar decisions in the insurance and financial services industries. These models are proprietary, and this "black box" nature hinders analysis. The proprietary models produce a wide range of results, often producing loss costs that differ by a ratio of three to one or more. In a study for the state of North Carolina, 324 combinations of loss models were analyzed, based on a combination of nine wind models, four surface friction models, and nine damage models drawn from the published literature in insurance, engineering, and meteorology. These combinations were …

Arbitrary Angle Waveguiding Applications Of Two-Dimensional Curvilinear-Lattice Photonic Crystals, Javad Zarbakhsh, Frank Hagmann, Sergei F. Mingaleev, Kurt Busch, Kurt Hingerl
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
We introduce a fresh class of photonic band-gap materials, curvilinear-lattice photonic crystals, whose distinctive feature is that their individual scatterers are arranged in a curvilinear lattice. We show that adhering to some restrictions in the acceptable lattice transformations, one can achieve omnidirectional photonic band gaps for an entire subclass of such structures. We demonstrate, designing an efficient arbitrary-angle waveguide bend, that curvilinear-lattice photonic crystals can be employed for creation of original types of nanophotonic devices.
Optical Nonresonance And Two-Photon Resonance Breathers In Anisotropic Media, G. T. Adamashvili, D. J. Kaup
Optical Nonresonance And Two-Photon Resonance Breathers In Anisotropic Media, G. T. Adamashvili, D. J. Kaup
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Anisotropic optical crystals with two-photon resonance impurity atoms are shown to have three different mechanisms of the formation of breathers depending on the direction of the wave propagation and on the symmetry of the medium. Explicit analytic expressions for the parameters of nonresonance and resonance two-photon breathers of extraordinary waves are obtained. It is shown that, unlike one-photon breathers, for two-photon breathers in the media with quadratic susceptibilities and the crystal classes 3, 3m, 4, 4mm, 6, 6mm, and Kerr media two different structures of the breathers zones are realized.
Time- And Spectrally Resolved Ultrafast Gain Dynamics Of A Semiconductor Optical Amplifier Under Phase-Correlated Multiwavelength Pulse Amplification, Luis C. Archundia, Bojan Resan, Peter J. Delfyett Jr.
Time- And Spectrally Resolved Ultrafast Gain Dynamics Of A Semiconductor Optical Amplifier Under Phase-Correlated Multiwavelength Pulse Amplification, Luis C. Archundia, Bojan Resan, Peter J. Delfyett Jr.
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
The ultrafast gain dynamics of an AlGaAs semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) are measured under phase-correlated multiwavelength pulse amplification using time-resolved pump-probe techniques. Both the temporal and spectral gain dynamics are measured. Carrier heating due to two photon absorption, carrier cooling, four-wave mixing, and cross-phase modulation effects are observed. These effects are evident when amplifying dispersion compensated pulses, and it is shown how these effects decrease when amplifying nondispersion compensated (chirped) pulses. This helps to avoid nonlinear effects in the gain media (SOA), which, in turn, helps to support the operation of external cavity multiwavelength semiconductor mode-locked lasers where the intracavity …

Stoichiometry-Anisotropy Connections In Epitaxial L1(0) Fept(001) Films, Katayun Barmak, Jihwan Kim, Laura H. Lewis, Kevin R. Coffey, Michael F. Toney, Andrew J. Kellock, Jen-Ulrich Thiele
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
The order parameters and anisotropy constants of a series of epitaxial L1(0) FePt films with compositions in the range of 45-55 at. % Fe and nominal thicknesses of 50 nm have been characterized. The films were made by cosputtering the elements onto single crystal MgO(001) substrates. The substrates were coated with 1 nm Pt/1 nm Fe bilayer seeds prior to alloy deposition. Both the bilayer seed and the alloy film were deposited at 620 degreesC. Lattice and order parameters were obtained by x-ray diffraction. Film compositions and thicknesses were determined by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, and room-temperature magnetocrystalline anisotropies were determined …
Time-Resolved Mueller Matrix Imaging Polarimetry, Ihor Berezhnyy, Aristide Dogariu
Time-Resolved Mueller Matrix Imaging Polarimetry, Ihor Berezhnyy, Aristide Dogariu
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
We present a new method of time-resolved Mueller matrix imaging polarimetry for spatial and temporal characterization of the polarization effects in backscattering from turbid media. The technique allows measuring the time evolution of spatially varying polarization patterns of diffusely backscattered light with picosecond resolution. A series of time-resolved polarization patterns are obtained at various time delays, are analyzed in sequence, and used to separate the polarimetric contributions of different scattering paths. Specific features of the 2D Mueller matrix components corresponding to light backscattered from colloidal suspensions were determined and characterized. The temporally- and spatially-resolved measurements permit detailed analysis of the …
Nano Dispersion Amplified Waveguide Structures, J. D. Brown, E. G. Johnson, M. G. Moharam
Nano Dispersion Amplified Waveguide Structures, J. D. Brown, E. G. Johnson, M. G. Moharam
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
A highly dispersive waveguide structure is proposed to efficiently compress and expand ultra short pulses in a package forming a sufficiently small footprint. A sub-wavelength grating is fashioned into a ridge waveguide to take advantage of multiple dispersive effects and spread the mode over a significantly larger area than a standard single-mode waveguide. The structure is designed to take advantage of the amplified dispersion near cutoff. Modal analysis is performed on two variations of the structure using a finite element solver package. The predicted dispersion is sufficient to double the width of a 1 ps pulse within the width of …
Three-Wave Solitons And Continuous Waves In Media With Competing Quadratic And Cubic Nonlinearities, Min Chen, D. J. Kaup, Boris A. Malomed
Three-Wave Solitons And Continuous Waves In Media With Competing Quadratic And Cubic Nonlinearities, Min Chen, D. J. Kaup, Boris A. Malomed
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
We formulate a general model of three-wave optical interactions (in the spatial domain), which combines quadratic (chi((2))) and cubic (chi((3))) nonlinearities, the latter including four-wave mixing. The model can be realized in chi((2)) materials where an effective chi((3)) nonlinearity is engineered by means of the quasi-phase-matching technique. Both self-focusing and self-defocusing chi((3)) nonlinearities are considered. The birefringence of the two fundamental-frequency (FF) waves is taken into regard. Several types of solitons in this system are found, by means of the variational approximation and numerical methods. These are exact single-component solitons and generic three-wave (3W) ones, which are classified by relative …

Induction Of A Novel Class Of Diacylglycerol Acyltransferases And Triacylglycerol Accumulation In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis As It Goes Into A Dormancy-Like State In Culture, Jaiyanth Daniel, Chirajyoti Deb, Vinod S. Dubey, Tatiana D. Sirakova, Bassam Abomoelak, Hector R. Morbidoni, Pappachan E. Kolattukudy
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Mycobacterium tuberculosis enters the host by inhalation of an infectious aerosol and replicates in the alveolar macrophages until the host's immune defense causes bacteriostasis, which leads the pathogen to go into nonreplicative drug-resistant dormancy. The dormant pathogen can survive for decades till the host's immune system is weakened and active tuberculosis develops. Even though fatty acids are thought to be the major energy source required for the persistence phase, the source of fatty acids used is not known. We postulate that the pathogen uses triacylglycerol (TG) as a storage form of fatty acids. Little is known about the biosynthesis of …

Enhanced Translation Of A Chloroplast-Expressed Rbcs Gene Restores Small Subunit Levels And Photosynthesis In Nuclear Rbcs Antisense Plants, Amit Dhingra, Archie R. Portis Jr., Henry Daniell
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) is a key enzyme that converts atmospheric carbon to food and supports life on this planet. Its low catalytic activity and specificity for oxygen leads to photorespiration, severely limiting photosynthesis and crop productivity. Consequently, Rubisco is a primary target for genetic engineering. Separate localization of the genes in the nuclear and chloroplast genomes and a complex assembly process resulting in a very low catalytic activity of hybrid Rubisco enzymes have rendered several earlier attempts of Rubisco engineering unsuccessful. Here we demonstrate that the RbcS gene, when integrated at a transcriptionally active spacer region of the chloroplast genome, …
Differential Classroom Interactions By Ethnicity: A Quantitative Approach, Geoff D. Tennant Dr
Differential Classroom Interactions By Ethnicity: A Quantitative Approach, Geoff D. Tennant Dr
Institute for Educational Development, East Africa
Concerns regarding differentials in classroom experience and academic attainment by ethnicity have been expressed for some time. This study explores, from a quantitative viewpoint based on fieldwork in 10 London schools, one particular aspect of this, namely classroom interactions between teachers and pupils from different ethnic origins. It was found that African Caribbean children were interacting with teachers at a greater rate than other children, mostly for disciplinary and administrative purposes, and to a much lesser extent for teaching purposes. Asian children, conversely, were interacting less with the teacher overall, but relatively highly for teaching purposes. Whilst these patterns were …
Female Sexual Offenders-An Underexamined Population, Creaig Anthony Dunton
Female Sexual Offenders-An Underexamined Population, Creaig Anthony Dunton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sex crimes are considered to be among the most damaging and heinous forms of social deviance in existence. Besides the acts perpetrated by the offenders, the social stigma attached to being victimized is often just as injurious to the victim. Society sees males as the sole perpetrators of acts of sexual abuse, but this is not the case. The extant literature shows that women, while fewer in number, also perpetrate acts of sexual abuse and assault against other adults and children. This thesis is a preliminary typology that classifies female sexual offenders based upon the acts perpetrated, using cases presented …
Method For Determination Of Singlet Oxygen Quantum Yields For New Fluorene-Based Photosensitizers In Aqueous Media For The Advancement Of Photodynamic Therapy, Wade William Grabow
Method For Determination Of Singlet Oxygen Quantum Yields For New Fluorene-Based Photosensitizers In Aqueous Media For The Advancement Of Photodynamic Therapy, Wade William Grabow
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been investigated over the past three decades and is currently an approved therapeutic modality for skin cancer, the treatment of superficial bladder, early lung and advanced esophageal cancers, and age-related macular degeneration in a number of countries. In PDT, the absorption of light by a chromophore generates cytotoxic species such as reactive singlet oxygen, leading to irreversible destruction of the treated tissue. The measurement of the singlet oxygen quantum yield is an important determinant used to evaluate the efficiency of new photodynamic therapy agents developed in the laboratory, to screen potential photosensitizers in aqueous media. The singlet …
Chemical Structure - Nonlinear Optical Property Relationships For A Series Of Two-Photon Absorbing Fluorene Molecules, Joel Mccajah Hales
Chemical Structure - Nonlinear Optical Property Relationships For A Series Of Two-Photon Absorbing Fluorene Molecules, Joel Mccajah Hales
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation reports on the investigation of two-photon absorption (2PA) in a series of fluorenyl molecules. Several current and emerging technologies exploit this optical nonlinearity including two-photon fluorescence imaging, three-dimensional microfabrication, site-specific photodynamic cancer therapy and biological caging studies. The two key features of this nonlinearity which make it an ideal candidate for the above applications are its quadratic dependence on the incident irradiance and the improved penetration into absorbing media that it affords. As a consequence of the burgeoning field which exploits 2PA, it is a goal to find materials that exhibit strong two-photon absorbing capabilities. Organic materials are …
Facade Democracy: Democratic Transition In Kazakhstan And Uzbekistan, Robin Nicole Merritt
Facade Democracy: Democratic Transition In Kazakhstan And Uzbekistan, Robin Nicole Merritt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the reasons behind the stagnation in the transition to democracy in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. According to their constitutions, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are democracies. In actuality, however, there is little evidence to support that these are democratic systems. These states' post-Soviet constitutions outline them as democracies - yet they lack a free press; freedom of association is suppressed; religious freedom is limited; and free speech is constrained as well. While these two countries hold popular elections, much of their electoral processes are under the control of the executive branch of government - calling into question whether or not …

Beginning Teacher Satisfaction With Employment In Southwest Florida: R, Derrick Donnell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The United States Department of Education predicts that the nation will need more than one million new teachers by the year 2010 (U.S.DOE, 1996). At the same time, 43% of teachers leave the profession within their first five years of employment. Southwest Florida is experiencing a tremendous growth rate. This growth rate pattern has been predicted to continue through the year 2010. The school districts of Southwest Florida find themselves scrambling to build new schools in order to keep pace with the growth. These new schools must be staffed with qualified teachers. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1985, the Florida Legislature mandated the development of a computer assisted academic advisement program for the State University System. This study of the Student Academic Support System (SASS) explored the administrator and advisor viewpoints, rather than traditional student perception assessments, in order to add to the understanding of computer assisted advising as it now stands in the State of Florida. The goal of this research was to determine the best practices of computer assisted advising throughout the State University System. Individuals who use or have responsibility for the advising system were identified in each institution in the State University …
Discrete Nonlinear Wave Propagation In Kerr Nonlinear Media, Joachim Meier
Discrete Nonlinear Wave Propagation In Kerr Nonlinear Media, Joachim Meier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Discrete optical systems are a subgroup of periodic structures in which the evolution of a continuous electromagnetic field can be described by a discrete model. In this model, the total field is the sum of localized, discrete modes. Weakly coupled arrays of single mode channel waveguides have been known to fall into this class of systems since the late 1960's. Nonlinear discrete optics has received a considerable amount of interest in the last few years, triggered by the experimental realization of discrete solitons in a Kerr nonlinear AlGaAs waveguide array by H. Eisenberg and coworkers in 1998. In this work …

Merger Of Law And Mediation: Lessons From Equity Jurisprudence And Roscoe Pound, The , Jacqueline Nolan-Haley
Faculty Scholarship
This article examines Roscoe Pound's concerns with the decline of equity jurisprudence in the American legal system, suggesting that they resonate with those of modern ADR scholars who worry about the effects of blending settlement with adjudication and mediation with the law. It examines court-connected mediation with particular emphasis on the historic parallels between equity and mediation. Both equity and mediation offer a form of "individualized justice" unavailable in the official legal system, and each allow room for mercy in an otherwise rigid, rule-bound justice system. Yet, scholars question whether equity today is still equitable and whether institutionalized mediation offers …
