Finite Element Analysis Of Left-Handed Waveguides, Balasubramaniam, Vellakkinar Jan 2004

Finite Element Analysis Of Left-Handed Waveguides, Balasubramaniam, Vellakkinar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this work, waveguides with simultaneous negative dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability, otherwise known as left-handed waveguides, are investigated. An approach of formulating and solving an eigenvalue problem with finite element method resulting in the dispersion relation of the waveguides is adopted in the analysis. Detailed methodology of one-dimensional scalar and two-dimensional vector finite element formulation for the analysis of grounded slab and arbitrary shaped waveguides is presented. Based on the analysis, for waveguides with conventional media, excellent agreement of results is observed between the finite element approach and the traditional approach. The method is then applied to analyze left-handed …

Toward A Model Of Theatrical Curation, Lisa Scott-Murphy Jan 2004

Toward A Model Of Theatrical Curation, Lisa Scott-Murphy

Creative Connections Symposium @ BEAP2004 September 4, 2004

Our two main areas of investigation raise these questions: Can immersion theatre be used to expand currently available models of ‘experiential’ exhibition making in a museum context? Could such a theatrical curatorial approach be used to address contemporary debates about the relationship between the past and the present in Australian history?

Talking Arts Research With A British Accent, Lelia Green Jan 2004

Talking Arts Research With A British Accent, Lelia Green

Creative Connections Symposium @ BEAP2004 September 4, 2004

This paper reports upon contemporary arts research in Britain, taking as its main focus the research practices in seven Universities judged either ‘excellent’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) category Drama, Dance and Cinematics. Visits to academics representing research at Aberystwyth, Brighton, Bristol, Manchester, Nottingham Trent, Royal Holloway and Warwick Universities provided a range of perspectives and information that challenge the manner in which arts research is conceived and funded in Australia. This difference in research cultures partly reflects the workings of the United Kingdom’s RAE quality drivers, and the paper asks whether recent DEST policy …

Speech Enabled E-Learning Technology For Adult Literacy Tutoring, Jason Meade Jan 2004

Speech Enabled E-Learning Technology For Adult Literacy Tutoring, Jason Meade

Theses

This research presents the work involved in developing a speech-enabled e-Learning prototype for use in literacy tutoring. As the main objective was to develop an interface for literacy learning, initial research concentrated on establishing a framework for literacy e-Leaming through the use of speech technology. Requirements for best practice e-Learning and the relevance of learning theories to an e-Learning application were also investigated. The technologies to facilitate this, such as text to speech technologies and mark-up languages, were addressed during the implementation of speech-enabled prototypes. Both server-side and client-side prototypes were implemented to investigate speech technology. Testing found the server-side …

Community Demographics, Peter Byrne Jan 2004

Community Demographics, Peter Byrne

Level 3

Following the marked industrial decline of the south-west inner-city of Dublin, the area is characterised today by all the compound problems which accompany long-term unemployment. The area has suffered from dereliction, physical neglect, large-scale environmental decay, heavy pollution, poor infrastructure, substandard housing, and a lack of recreational facilities and open green spaces. The south-west inner-city is now characterised by complex social exclusion and by multi-dimensional deprivation.

Where Does Ap(E)L Fit In Higher Education, Anne Murphy

Level 3

On an EU policy level the paper acknowledges the impact on thinking about AP(E)L as a result of the agreement of common European principles for validation of non-formal and in-formal learning in 2004 at the Dublin Conference during Ireland’s presidency of the EU (note 1).This conference also addressed the possible areas of agreement across vocational education and training (VET) and higher education (HE) on contiguous issues such as a common European Qualification Framework, common arrangements for credit transfer and common arrangements for quality assurance. Additionally, the paper is written contemporaneously with the introduction of such mechanisms as the …

Level 3

Having worked as a lecturer for five years, I was given the opportunity to undertake the postgraduate diploma in third-level learning and teaching at the Dublin Institute of Technology. The elective I chose as part of this course was online learning. The requirement to compile a reflective journal during the module has provided the catalyst for me to write this paper. This Paper describes work in progress for proposed research within the Department of Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Studies in Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT). The purpose of this research is to investigate the feasibility of providing and the effectiveness …

Is Sue And Be Sued Language A Clear And Unambiguous Waiver Of Immunity., A. Craig Carter Jan 2004

Is Sue And Be Sued Language A Clear And Unambiguous Waiver Of Immunity., A. Craig Carter

St. Mary's Law Journal

Because “sue and be sued” language is ambiguous at best, courts should not find that this language is a waiver of immunity. Under Texas law, governmental entities—including the state, its agencies, and political subdivisions—are entitled to sovereign immunity from both suit and liability. For sovereign immunity to be applicable to governmental entities, sovereign immunity applies unless the legislature has clearly and unambiguously waived it. Although numerous Texas appellate courts have held that “sue and be sued” language is a waiver of sovereign immunity, the Texas Supreme Court has squarely addressed the issue only once, in Missouri Pacific Railroad Co. v. …

Evaluation Of Sustainable Yield Of The Barton Springs Segment Of The Edwards Aquifer, Hays And Travis Counties, Central Texas Bseacd Report Of Investigations 2007-1201, Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The combined effects of drought and substantial pumping can result in a decline in water levels and spring flow in an aquifer. This report evaluates potential impacts on groundwater availability in the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer (Barton Springs aquifer) during a recurrence of drought-of-record (1950's) conditions and various rates of pumping. A numerical groundwater model and hydrogeologic data were the primary tools used in this evaluation. The Barton Springs aquifer is an important groundwater resource for municipal, industrial, domestic, recreational, and ecological needs. Approximately 50,000 people depend on water from the Barton Springs aquifer as …

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act: A Bird's-Eye View, Niels Schaumann Jan 2004

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act: A Bird's-Eye View, Niels Schaumann

Faculty Scholarship

It is the goal of this article to provide a brief reference to the multitude of changes in the law wrought by SOX. The author's hope is that this will be of use to students, scholars, and practitioners seeking an overview of the extensive changes resulting from this legislation. The discussion is broader than it is deep; indeed, a work attempting to examine SOX in depth would soon become a treatise and not just an article. The remainder of this article, then, will seek to provide a big-picture view of SOX: Part II of this article will address SOX regulation …

Conceptualization And Simulation Of The Edwards Aquifer, San Antonio Region, Texas, R. J. Lindgren, A. R. Dutton, S. D. Hovorka

KIP Articles

A new numerical ground-water-flow model (Edwards aquifer model) that incorporates important components of the latest information and plausible conceptualization of the Edwards aquifer was developed. The model includes both the San Antonio and Barton Springs segments of the Edwards aquifer in the San Antonio region, Texas, and was calibrated for steady-state (1939–46) and transient (1947–2000) conditions, excluding Travis County. Transient simulations were conducted using monthly recharge and pumpage (withdrawal) data. The model incorporates conduits simulated as continuously connected (other than being separated in eastern Uvalde and southwestern Medina Counties), one-cell-wide (1,320 feet) zones with very large hydraulic-conductivity values (as much …
