Industry Trends In Fulfillment, Finishing And Distribution, Twyla Cummings, Kalpana Chhita

Books

Today's printing industry is in a state of transition. It has become an industry that no longer solely relies on print for sustainability. Thus, printers as well as print services providers are incorporating different strategies into their business models to provide the types of services that customers now require in order to achieve their own business goals. In an effort to better understand the impact of these emerging trends, a research study was undertaken through the Printing Industry Center (CIAS) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). The primary research objectives for this project were: To clearly understand the changing …

Is Corporate Insourcing Of Print On The Rise?, Patricia Sorce, Brett Daly

Books

What is the balance between the "make" and the "buy" decision for corporate document production services? In a Printing Industry Center (CIAS) report from 2003, 43% of marketing executives, often the document creators, reported that they were increasing the amount of printing in-house for collateral material. The research objective of this exploratory study is to gain insight into the document processing and printing sourcing decisions in firms. A total of 44 print buyers completer the survey. The profile of the respondents indicated that they represented a broad range of firms, from financial services to manufacturing. A majority purchased over $500,000 …

Virtual Solar System / Chong Yee Wah, Yee Wah Chong

Student Works (2000-2009)

3D modelling is a three-stage process: First, obtain data and get it into computer; second, use the computer to interact with it, just as manipulating real object, but without annoyances like gravity and material strength· and third. output or store the modified data. Or, the data might subsequently be made 'real' again by automatically fabricating an object using. Deriving a solar system is much challenging as it involves creation of nine different sizes of planets, obtaining the images that can be combined to form a realistic 30 meshes, importing the sound files that can pronounce the name of the planets …

Survey Of The Assistive Technology Use By Visually Disabled Students In Wisconsin, Erin Vande Hei Jan 2004

Survey Of The Assistive Technology Use By Visually Disabled Students In Wisconsin, Erin Vande Hei

Honors Capstones

The question driving my proposed research is this: AIe the visually impaired students of Wisconsin receiving some type of assistive technology training and/or assistance? The proposed method of finding the answer to this question is to send a survey to each of the teachers of the blind and visually impaired. The most prominent finding of the research was the implication that more extensive and continuing education on the use of assistive technology should be provided for both teachers and students. Hopefully the emergence of more studies will bring to light the concern for education involving assistive technology in the field …

Children And Television : A Literature Review Of The Influence Of Television On Children From 1970-2000, Lisa Suwalski Jan 2004

Children And Television : A Literature Review Of The Influence Of Television On Children From 1970-2000, Lisa Suwalski

Honors Capstones

This review focused on television's influences on children in the period from 1970 to 2000. This review is important because of the explanations it presents for the arguments made by numerous researchers about the effects of television on society, and how the influence changed society from 1970 to 2000. A valuable aspect of this review was that if television was considered a medium that changes, and was continually refined, why did only certain issues catch the attention of researchers? Often, in each separate decade, similar types of influences of television on children arose and were repeatedly studied by the researchers. …

Ohio Joins The New Judicial Federalism Movement: A Little To-Ing And A Little Fro-Ing , Marianna Brown Bettman Jan 2004

Ohio Joins The New Judicial Federalism Movement: A Little To-Ing And A Little Fro-Ing , Marianna Brown Bettman

Cleveland State Law Review

Bettman analyzes Ohio Supreme Court decisions construing the Speech, Press, Search and Seizure, Free Exercise, and Establishment Clause analogues of the Ohio Constitution. Here in Ohio, she concludes, New Judicial Federalism remains in its infancy. The Ohio Supreme Court is still struggling with the fundamentals of state constitutional interpretation. It remains heavily dependant on federal methodology when construing analogous provisions of the state constitution. Bettman gives us the unique perspective of a law professor who previously served as an Ohio appellate court judge. This perspective sensitizes her to the current political make-up of the Ohio Supreme Court. Today's court, she …

Virtuous Judges And Electoral Politics: A Contradiction?, Marie Failinger Jan 2004

Virtuous Judges And Electoral Politics: A Contradiction?, Marie Failinger

Faculty Scholarship

Judge Thomas J. Spargo serves as a fascinating poster-child in the debate on what’s wrong (or right) with judicial elections. Judge Spargo, campaigning for re-election as Justice of the Berne Town Court in upstate New York, was accused of “failing to observe the high standards of conduct” expected as a judge because he handed out doughnuts to voters. Judge Spargo’s case and others illustrate that popular debates about the merits of judicial elections versus judicial selection commissions have probably been mis-focused on two “second-order questions rather than concentrating on “first-order” concerns in judicial selection. This article discusses these questions and …

Learning From Practice: What Adr Needs From A Theory Of Justice, Kate Kruse

Faculty Scholarship

Adding to the impressive body of work that has made her a leading voice in the fields of both alternative dispute resolution and professional responsibility, Carrie Menkel-Meadow's Saltman Lecture connects the theoretical exploration currently occurring on two parallel tracks: (1) theories of justice that investigate the ideal of a deliberative democracy; and (2) theories of alternative dispute resolution arising from its reflective practice. As she notes, theorists on both tracks are grappling with similar questions about the processes or conditions that will best bring together parties with widely divergent viewpoints to consensus-building dialogue around contested issues.

While Menkel-Meadow focuses on …

Community Impacts Of Coastal Tourism In The Dominican Republic, Yolanda M. Leon Jan 2004

Community Impacts Of Coastal Tourism In The Dominican Republic, Yolanda M. Leon

Open Access Dissertations

The present work presents the results of survey research conducted in 23 coastal communities of the Dominican Republic to evaluate the impacts of tourism and also the evaluation of a particular co-management system of a tourism-related activity (whale watching in Samaná Bay). Major findings include that tourism is having a positive impact on rural livelihoods as measured by increased household income, and higher levels of job satisfaction (and in the case of female-headed households, also improved material well-being). We also evidenced strong local support for the tourism industry caused by wide agreement on perceived tourism benefits; however, residents are also …

A Tale Of Two Jurisdictions And An Orphan Case: Antitrust, Intellectual Property, And Refusals To Deal, Eleanor M. Fox

Fordham International Law Journal

This Essay examines both the U.S. law and the EU law through the window of a recent U.S. case: New York Mercantile Exchange v. Intercontinental Exchange (“NYMEX”). The NYMEX facts are similar in concept to the facts in IMS but present a stronger case for liability. The Essay argues that the opinion in NYMEX, along with a growing set of U.S. cases, interprets Trinko to impose rigid requirements on a Section 2 plaintiff, not all of which are inherent in Trinko. It argues that the formalistic post-Trinko analysis, which would require dismissal of cases that do not fit within one …

The “Who,“ “What,” “Where” And “How” Of The “Down Low”: A Personally‐Inspired Book Review Of Keith Boykin’S Beyond The Down Low: Sex, Lies And Denial In Black America, William H. Alexander

Trotter Review

In this review of Keith Boykin’s book on the Down Low, William H. Alexander draws generously from his own personal experience. According to Alexander, Boykin’s book is a wake up call and challenge to the Black community to stop wasting their time blaming and developing strategies that reject, exclude and oppress, but instead focus on their spirituality and humanity so that lives can be saved.

Homosexual And Racial Identity Conflicts And Depression Among African‐American Gay Males, William H. Alexander Jan 2004

Homosexual And Racial Identity Conflicts And Depression Among African‐American Gay Males, William H. Alexander

Trotter Review

What does it mean to be male, Black and homosexual in the United States? In this study of 191 such men, William H. Alexander examines whether racial identity conflict and homosexual identity conflict contribute to depression in Black gay men. Alexander reports that being Black, a Black male, and a homosexual puts one in a vulnerable position that requires that he cope with a variety of stereotypes from every society with which he interacts. This pressure contributes to depression in this population.

Sorting It All Out: Book Review Of Delroy Constantine‐Simms’S The Greatest Taboo: Homosexuality In Black Communities, Anne W. Gathuo

Trotter Review

With contributors from an impressive array of scholars and journalists, The Greatest Taboo: Homosexuality in Black Communities, edited by Delroy Constantine‐Simms, attempts to tackle a wide variety of issues pertaining to homosexuality in Black communities in various parts of the world. While the book cannot claim to have satisfactorily explained all the issues, a fair attempt has been made. Certainly the book succeeds in illustrating the complexity of Black homosexuality.

The Effect Of Cultural Conditions On The Variations Of Sod, Cat And Gsh-Px Activities And Lpo Levels In The Filamentous Fungus Fusarium Equiseti, Hülya Ayar Kayali, Leman Tarhan Jan 2004

The Effect Of Cultural Conditions On The Variations Of Sod, Cat And Gsh-Px Activities And Lpo Levels In The Filamentous Fungus Fusarium Equiseti, Hülya Ayar Kayali, Leman Tarhan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The changes in the activity of cellular detoxifying defence enzymes such as SOD, CAT and GSH-Px against superoxide anion radical and hydrogen peroxide, and in LPO levels in the filamentous fungus, Fusarium equiseti were measured under growth condition. Experiments were performed comparing changes in glycerol and saccharose (5-25 g/L) as carbon sources, and in glycine, peptone (5-35 g/L) as nitrogen sources in an AFM medium. While SOD activities correlate well with respect to the increase in the glycerol concentration (r = 0.437, p < 0.001), CAT activities showed negative correlation (r = -0.663, p < 0.001). The increase in SOD and CAT activities of F. equiseti correlated with increases in saccharose concentration. When glycerol and saccharose were used as carbon sources, the maximum SOD, CAT and GSH-Px enzymes activities and the minimum LPO level were determined in the medium containing 15 g/L of saccharose on the 12^{th} day at 66.61, 182.79, 1.045 IU/mg and 1.41 nmol MDA/ gr wet weight, respectively. The effects of peptone and glycine as nitrogen sources were also investigated: 53.4% and 48.03% decreases were observed in the SOD and CAT activities of F. equiseti in the presence of 10 g/L of peptone in the culture medium. The presence of 15 g/L of glycine caused 5.30% and 69.90% decreases in the SOD and CAT activities in comparison to the presence of 15 g/L of saccharose, respectively. On the other hand, LPO levels increased in proportion to the decrease in antioxidant enzyme activities in glycine and peptone supplemented media.

An Efficient Synthesis Of Substituted 4-Aryl-3-Cyano-2-Amino Thiophenes By A Stepwise Gewald Reaction, Ferhan Tümer, Duygu Eki̇nci̇, Kani̇ Zi̇lbeyaz, Ümi̇t Demi̇r Jan 2004

An Efficient Synthesis Of Substituted 4-Aryl-3-Cyano-2-Amino Thiophenes By A Stepwise Gewald Reaction, Ferhan Tümer, Duygu Eki̇nci̇, Kani̇ Zi̇lbeyaz, Ümi̇t Demi̇r

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The title compounds were efficiently synthesised starting from aryl methyl ketones in 3 steps. Knoevenagel condensation of aryl methyl ketones with malononitrile gave the corresponding crotonitriles (5a-f). Methyl groups of the crotonitriles (5a-f) were then efficiently brominated by refluxing and lightening the reaction media to give bromocrotonitriles (6a-f). The bromocrotonitriles (6a-f) were finally cyclised by treatment with NaSH to give the title compounds.

Transgovernmental Networks Vs. Democracy: The Case Of The European Information Privacy Network, Francesca Bignami Jan 2004

Transgovernmental Networks Vs. Democracy: The Case Of The European Information Privacy Network, Francesca Bignami

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Under the European Data Protection Directive, responsibility for implementation and enforcement is generally left to the member states. The exception is for transfers to third countries: a complex network of national regulators, the European Commission, and a transnational comitology committee are responsible for blocking or permitting transfers to countries without adequate privacy guarantees. This article reviews the operation of the network and then poses two questions, one causal and the other normative. First, what explains the pattern of delegation (and non-delegation) of powers to the network? Second, does the network allow for adequate participation rights and judicial review and for …

From Convergence To Comity In Corporate Law: Lessons From The Inauspicious Case Of Sox, Lawrence A. Cunningham Jan 2004

From Convergence To Comity In Corporate Law: Lessons From The Inauspicious Case Of Sox, Lawrence A. Cunningham

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act shook the corporate world beyond US borders more than Enron shook the corporate world within them. This Article goes beyond the prodigious commentary on the Act itself to understand the nature of its reception outside the US.

It first develops a hubs-and-spokes account of global corporate life in which corporate purpose, which varies around the world, forms the hub and radiates spokes constituting governance, finance, accounting, and auditing - all of which also differ around the world. Using this model, the Article suggests that non-US receptions to the Act exhibited unfounded fear that the exportation of US …

Juvenile And Adult Survival In The Sociable Weaver (Philetairus Socius), A Southern-Temperate Colonial Cooperative Breeder In Africa, Rita Covas, Charles R. Brown, Mark D. Anderson, Mary Bomberger Brown Jan 2004

Juvenile And Adult Survival In The Sociable Weaver (Philetairus Socius), A Southern-Temperate Colonial Cooperative Breeder In Africa, Rita Covas, Charles R. Brown, Mark D. Anderson, Mary Bomberger Brown

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

We used capture–recapture analyses to describe juvenile and adult survival from 1993 to 2001 in a population of Sociable Weavers (Philetairus socius), a colonial, cooperatively breeding passerine of southern Africa. We examined temporal variation in survival and the role that the breeding season’s length and environmental factors play in determining survival patterns in the population. Annual survival probability (mean ± SE) was 0.66 ± 0.02. In contrast to most passerines, juveniles and adults had similar survival probabilities; survival rates did not vary significantly between years. We found no relationship among temperature, rainfall, and survival. Relatively high survival rates …

Occurrence And Characterization Of Mercury Resistance In The Hyperthermophilic Archaeon Sulfolobus Solfataricus By Use Of Gene Disruption, James Schelert, Vidula Dixit, Viet Hoang, Jessica Simbahan, Melissa Drozda, Paul H. Blum Jan 2004

Occurrence And Characterization Of Mercury Resistance In The Hyperthermophilic Archaeon Sulfolobus Solfataricus By Use Of Gene Disruption, James Schelert, Vidula Dixit, Viet Hoang, Jessica Simbahan, Melissa Drozda, Paul H. Blum

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Mercury resistance mediated by mercuric reductase (MerA) is widespread among bacteria and operates under the control of MerR. MerR represents a unique class of transcription factors that exert both positive and negative regulation on gene expression. Archaea and bacteria are prokaryotes, yet little is known about the biological role of mercury in archaea or whether a resistance mechanism occurs in these organisms. The archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus was sensitive to mercuric chloride, and low-level adaptive resistance could be induced by metal preconditioning. Protein phylogenetic analysis of open reading frames SSO2689 and SSO2688 clarified their identity as orthologs of MerA and MerR. …
