Interaction Between Metal Fission Products And Triso Coating Materials: A Study Of Chemical Bonding And Interdiffusion: 3rd Quarter Report, 2004, Clemens Heske

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

The goal of this project, which started in May 2004, is to elucidate the chemical bonding and interface formation of metal fission products with the coating materials used in state-of-the-art TRISO fuel particles. Particular emphasis is placed on an analysis of intermediate chemical phases at the interface, the intermixing/diffusion behavior, and the electronic interface structure as a function of material choice (metal and coating materials), temperature, and external stress.

In detail, this project is devoted to studying the interface formation of Pd, Ag, and Cs with SiC and pyrolytic carbon. Using the TRISO coating materials and single crystal references as …

Dissolution, Reactor, And Environmental Behavior Of Zro2-Mgo Inert Fuel Matrix, Kenneth Czerwinski Jan 2004

Dissolution, Reactor, And Environmental Behavior Of Zro2-Mgo Inert Fuel Matrix, Kenneth Czerwinski

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

This project will examine inert fuels containing ZrO2 and MgO as the inert matrix, with the relative amount of MgO varied from 30% to 70% in ZrO2. Reactor physics calculations will be used to examine suitable quantities of burnable poisons from the candidate elements Gd, Er, or Hf with reactor grade Pu providing the fissile component, with up to 10 % of 239Pu. Ceramics will be synthesized and characterized based on the reactor physics results. The solubility the fuel ceramics, in reactor conditions, reprocessing conditions, and repository conditions, will be investigated in a manner to provide …

Influence Of Varying Intensities Of Natural Area On-Site Interpretation On Attitudes And Knowledge, Michael Hughes Jan 2004

Influence Of Varying Intensities Of Natural Area On-Site Interpretation On Attitudes And Knowledge, Michael Hughes

Theses

Using interpretation as a means of influencing attitudes and knowledge is a core component of natural area management practice. However, this aspect of on-site interpretation is rarely assessed when evaluating natural area management success. This thesis examined the immediate influence of different intensities of on-site interpretation on attitudes and knowledge of visitors to natural areas. Measuring the immediate (short term) influence of a site experience enables clearer links to be made between survey responses and interpretation used at a specific site, something long term surveys are less able to achieve. Two sites from Western Australia (the Tree Top Walk and …

Optical Wave Propagation Through Non-Kolmogorov Atmospheric Turbulence, Paul Anthony Liptack Jan 2004

Optical Wave Propagation Through Non-Kolmogorov Atmospheric Turbulence, Paul Anthony Liptack

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The effect of atmospheric turbulence on an optical wave can seriously degrade the reliability of an optical communication link. One atmospheric effect is scintillation, which is caused by index of refraction fluctuations. Several observations of atmospheric turbulence statistics suggest a modest change in the power law behavior of Kolmogorov' s power spectral density model. The corresponding index of refraction fluctuations are assumed to have spatial power spectra that obey power laws that deviate somewhat from the classical - 11/3 power law. The purpose of this study is to develop analytical models for scintillation and other wave propagation statistics based on …

Is The Implicit Association Test A Valid And Valuable Measure Of Implicit Consumer Social Cognition?, Frederic F. Brunel, Brian C. Tietje, Anthony G. Greenwald

Marketing

This article discusses the need for more satisfactory implicit measures in consumer psychology and assesses the theoretical foundations, validity, and value of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) as a measure of implicit consumer social cognition. Study 1 demonstrates the IAT’s sensitivity to explicit individual differences in brand attitudes, ownership, and usage frequency, and shows their correlations with IAT-based measures of implicit brand attitudes and brand relationship strength. In Study 2, the contrast between explicit and implicit measures of attitude toward the ad for sportswear advertisements portraying African American (Black) and European American (White) athlete–spokespersons revealed different patterns of responses to …

The Barry Bonds Baseball Case - An Empirical Approach - Is Fleeting Possession Five Tenths Of The Ball?, Peter Adomeit Jan 2004

The Barry Bonds Baseball Case - An Empirical Approach - Is Fleeting Possession Five Tenths Of The Ball?, Peter Adomeit

Faculty Scholarship

Mr. Barry Bonds hit his record seventy-third home run on October 7, 2001. Mr. Alex Popov was smart enough to be in the standing room only area at San Francisco's Pacific Bell Park behind the right field bleachers known as the Arcade, where Mr. Bonds had hit many of his home runs. Mr. Popov was lucky enough to be located almost precisely where the ball was hit, needing only to take one step back. He also had brought a softball glove to the park, as well as a small earbud radio on which he could listen to the play-by-play of …

Design And Implementation Of A Low Voltage, High Speed 10-Bit Cmos Current Mode Dac, Vijay Kumar Peddinti Jan 2004

Design And Implementation Of A Low Voltage, High Speed 10-Bit Cmos Current Mode Dac, Vijay Kumar Peddinti

Open Access Master's Theses

The topic of this thesis is to design and implement a low voltage, high speed, 10-bit Digital to Analog Converter in 0.5 μm CMOS technology. Design, architecture, methodology, and performance of the proposed DAC are presented.

CMOS Current Steering DACs are inherently fast and thus represent a good choice if high speed is important. To reduce the linear graded mismatch the positioning of current sources was carefully studied. Different architectures are outlined and segmented architecture has been implemented due to its suitableness for high speed applications. Two sets of DACs with different types of current sources have been fabricated and …

Sympathy And Approbation In Hume And Smith: A Solution To The Other Rational Species Problem, David M. Levy, Sandra J. Peart Jan 2004

Sympathy And Approbation In Hume And Smith: A Solution To The Other Rational Species Problem, David M. Levy, Sandra J. Peart

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

This paper examines a key implication of the different conceptions of sympathy and the approbation associated with sympathy in the writings of David Hume and Adam Smith. For Hume, sympathy is an empathy we feel for those like us and hence we are motivated to obtain the praise or approbation of those with whom we sympathize. In Hume’s construction there is a direct link from sympathy to motivation because sympathy is reflected self-love. By contrast, in Smith’s construction sympathy is an act of imagination which only habit makes motivational. The abstraction by our imagination means we earn the approbation (or …

On The "Bitter Quarrel" Between Economics And Its Enemies, Sandra J. Peart Jan 2004

On The "Bitter Quarrel" Between Economics And Its Enemies, Sandra J. Peart

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Economics has long had its enemies. The question is, why? What, precisely, is it about economics that its critics oppose? William Coleman seeks to tell the story of «anti-economics», «to take its measure» (p. 3), and then finally to defend economics from these attacks. His is a broad, sweeping study that uses a wide lens, panoramically over time, to survey the opposition. The crisis in economics, edited by Edward Fullbrook, provides us instead with a detailed snapshot of a recent sort of anti-economics - the Post-Autistic Economics (PAE) movement that originated among French economics students in 2000. Both serve to …
